Bhagavata Purana

अथाह सुरभिः कृष्णं अभिवन्द्य मनस्विनी । स्वसन्तानैरुपामन्त्र्य गोपरूपिणमीश्वरम्

Then Surabhi, thoughtful, approached Krishna, the Lord in the form of a cowherd, along with her offspring, and offered her respects.

सुरभिरुवाच - कृष्ण कृष्ण महायोगिन् विश्वात्मन् विश्वसम्भव । भवता लोकनाथेन सनाथा वयमच्युत

Surabhi said: Krishna, Krishna, great yogi, soul of the universe, origin of all, by you, the Lord of the worlds, we are protected, O infallible one.

त्वं नः परमकं दैवं त्वं न इन्द्रो जगत्पते । भवाय भव गोविप्र देवानां ये च साधवः

You are our supreme deity, not Indra, O Lord of the world; for the welfare of cows, brahmins, gods, and the virtuous, you exist.

इन्द्रं नस्त्वाभिषेक्ष्यामो ब्रह्मणा चोदिता वयम् । अवतीर्णोऽसि विश्वात्मम् भूमेर्भारापनुत्तये

We, prompted by Brahmā, shall anoint you, O Indra. You have descended, O Soul of the Universe, to remove the burden of the earth.

श्रीशुक उवाच - एवं कृष्णमुपामन्त्र्य सुरभिः पयसात्मनः । जलैराकाशगङ्‌गाया ऐरावतकरोद्‌धृतैः

Śuka said: Thus, after inviting Kṛṣṇa, Surabhi bathed him with her own milk, and with waters brought by Airāvata from the celestial Gaṅgā.

इन्द्रः सुरर्षिभिः साकं चोदितो देवमातृभिः । अभ्यसिञ्चत दाशार्हं गोविन्द इति चाभ्यधात्

Indra, together with the sages among the gods and prompted by the mothers of the gods, anointed the descendant of Daśārha, addressing him as Govinda.

( मिश्र ) तत्रागतास्तुम्बुरुनारदादयो गन्धर्वविद्याधरसिद्धचारणाः । जगुर्यशो लोकमलापहं हरेः सुराङ्‌गनाः संननृतुर्मुदान्विताः

There arrived Tumburu, Nārada, and others—Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, Siddhas, and Cāraṇas—who sang the fame of Hari, which destroys the impurities of the worlds, while the celestial women danced with joy.

तं तुष्टुवुर्देवनिकायकेतवो व्यवाकिरन् चाद्‍भुतपुष्पवृष्टिभिः । लोकाः परां निर्वृतिमाप्नुवंस्त्रयो गावस्तदा गामनयन् पयोद्रुताम्

The leaders of the divine hosts praised him, and showered wondrous rains of flowers; the three worlds attained supreme delight, and the cows then gave forth streams of milk.

( अनुष्टुप् ) नानारसौघाः सरितो वृक्षा आसन् मधुस्रवाः । अकृष्टपच्यौषधयो गिरयोऽबिभ्रदुन्मणीन्

Various groups of rivers and trees flowed with honey; grains and herbs grew without cultivation, and the mountains bore precious gems.

कृष्णेऽभिषिक्त एतानि सत्त्वानि कुरुनन्दन । निर्वैराण्यभवंस्तात क्रूराण्यपि निसर्गतः

O descendant of Kuru, when Kṛṣṇa was anointed, all beings—even those cruel by nature—became free from enmity, O dear one.

इति गोगोकुलपतिं गोविन्दमभिषिच्य सः । अनुज्ञातो ययौ शक्रो वृतो देवादिभिर्दिवम्

Thus, after anointing Govinda, the lord of the cows and cowherds, Indra, permitted by him and accompanied by the gods and others, returned to heaven.

दुर्गां विनायकं व्यासं विष्वक्सेनं गुरून् सुरान् । स्वे स्वे स्थाने त्वभिमुखान् पूजयेत् प्रोक्षणादिभिः

One should worship Durgā, Vināyaka, Vyāsa, Viṣvaksena, the teachers, and the gods, each facing their own direction, with offerings such as sprinkling and others.

चन्दनोशीरकर्पूर कुङ्कुमागुरुवासितैः । सलिलैः स्नापयेन्मन्त्रैः नित्यदा विभवे सति

With sandalwood, camphor, kuṅkuma, aguru, and fragrant waters, one should bathe (the deity) with mantras daily, if resources allow.

स्वर्णघर्मानुवाकेन महापुरुषविद्यया । पौरुषेणापि सूक्तेन सामभी राजनादिभिः

With the recitation of the Svarṇagharman hymn, the Mahāpuruṣa-vidyā, the Pauruṣa Sūkta, and Sāman hymns, O King, one should perform the rites.

वस्त्रोपवीताभरण पत्रस्रग्गन्धलेपनैः । अलङ्कुर्वीत सप्रेम मद्‍भक्तो मां यथोचितम्

With garments, sacred threads, ornaments, leaf-garlands, and fragrant ointments, my devotee should adorn me with love, as is proper.

पाद्यं आचमनीयं च गन्धं सुमनसोऽक्षतान् । धूपदीपोपहार्याणि दद्यान्मे श्रद्धयार्चकः

With water for washing the feet, for sipping, with fragrance, flowers, unbroken rice, incense, lamps, and offerings, the worshipper should present them to me with faith.

गुडपायससर्पींषि शष्कुल्यापूपमोदकान् । संयावदधिसूपांश्च नैवेद्यं सति कल्पयेत्

One should prepare offerings such as sweet rice with jaggery, clarified butter, fried cakes, rice cakes, and sweets, as well as curd, soup, and other foods, if available.

अभ्यङ्गोन्मर्दनादर्श दन्तधावाभिषेचनम् । अन्नाद्यगीतनृत्यादि पर्वणि स्युरुतान्वहम्

Oiling, massaging, mirrors, tooth-cleaning, bathing, food, drink, singing, dancing, and the like should be performed daily and on festival days.

विधिना विहिते कुण्डे मेखलागर्तवेदिभिः । अग्निमाधाय परितः समूहेत् पाणिनोदितम्

In the prescribed manner, in a consecrated fire-pit with girdle, fuel, and altar, one should kindle the fire and gather it all around, as directed by hand.

परिस्तीर्याथ पर्युक्षेद् अन्वाधाय यथाविधि । प्रोक्षण्याऽऽसाद्य द्रव्याणि प्रोक्ष्याग्नौ भावयेत माम्

After spreading (the kuśa grass), one should sprinkle (the area), place the offerings as prescribed, purify them with water, and, having approached the fire, offer them to me.

तप्तजाम्बूनदप्रख्यं शङ्खचक्रगदाम्बुजैः । लसच्चतुर्भुजं शान्तं पद्मकिञ्जल्कवाससम्

One should meditate on me as resplendent as molten gold, with conch, discus, mace, and lotus, shining with four arms, peaceful, and clad in garments the color of lotus filaments.

स्फुरत्किरीटकटक कटिसूत्रवराङ्गदम् । श्रीवत्सवक्षसं भ्राजत् कौस्तुभं वनमालिनम्

Radiant with crown, bracelets, waistband, and splendid armlets; adorned with the mark of Śrīvatsa upon the chest, shining with the Kaustubha gem and a garland of forest flowers.

ध्यायन्नभ्यर्च्य दारूणि हविषाभिघृतानि च । प्रास्याज्यभागावाघारौ दत्त्वा चाज्यप्लुतं हविः

Meditating and worshipping, he places the wooden offerings and those soaked in clarified butter; after offering the portions of ghee for the ancestors and the gods, he presents the oblation immersed in ghee.

अभ्यर्च्याथ नमस्कृत्य पार्षदेभ्यो बलिं हरेत् । मूलमन्त्रं जपेद् ब्रह्म स्मरन्नारायणात्मकम्

Having worshipped and bowed, he offers gifts to the attendants; reciting the root mantra, he contemplates Brahman, remembering the essence of Nārāyaṇa.

दत्त्वाऽऽचमनमुच्छेषं विष्वक्सेनाय कल्पयेत् । मुखवासं सुरभिमत् ताम्बूलाद्यमथाहयेत्

After giving water for sipping and the remnants, he prepares them for Viṣvaksena; then, with fragrant mouth-fresheners such as betel, he offers them accordingly.

उपगायन् गृणन् नृत्यन् कर्माणि अभिनयन् मम । मत्कथाः श्रावयन् श्रृण्वन् मुहूर्तं क्षणिको भवेत्

Singing, praising, dancing, and enacting deeds of mine; narrating and listening to my stories, for a moment he becomes absorbed.

स्तवैरुच्चावचैः स्तोत्रैः पौराणैः प्राकृतैरपि । स्तुत्वा प्रसीद भगवन् इति वन्देत दण्डवत्

With hymns, both high and low, and praises from the Purāṇas and even from common speech, having extolled, he prays, 'Be gracious, O Lord,' and prostrates himself.

शिरो मत्पादयोः कृत्वा बाहुभ्यां च परस्परम् । प्रपन्नं पाहि मामीश भीतं मृत्युग्रहार्णवात्

Placing his head at my feet and his arms crossed, he implores, 'Protect me, O Lord! I have surrendered, frightened by the ocean of death and its snares.'

इति शेषां मया दत्तां शिरस्याधाय सादरम् । उद्वासयेद् चेद् उद्वास्यं ज्योतिर्ज्योतिषि तत्पुनः

Thus, placing the remainder given by me upon his head with reverence, if he is to conclude the worship, he should respectfully return the offering to the light, and again to the supreme light.
