बुद्ध्या ब्रह्मापि हृदयं नोदतिष्ठत् तदा विराट् । रुद्रोऽभिमत्या हृदयं नोदतिष्ठत् तदा विराट्
Even Brahmā entered the heart with intellect, but the cosmic being did not rise. Rudra entered the heart with ego, but the cosmic being did not rise.
चित्तेन हृदयं चैत्यः क्षेत्रज्ञः प्राविशद्यदा । विराट्तदैव पुरुषः सलिलाद् उदतिष्ठत
When the inner witness, the knower of the field, entered the heart with consciousness, then the cosmic being arose from the waters.
यथा प्रसुप्तं पुरुषं प्राणेन्द्रियमनोधियः । प्रभवन्ति विना येन नोत्थापयितुमोजसा
Just as, in a sleeping person, the life-airs, senses, mind, and intellect exist but cannot awaken him without his vital energy,
तमस्मिन् प्रत्यगात्मानं धिया योगप्रवृत्तया । भक्त्या विरक्त्या ज्ञानेन विविच्यात्मनि चिन्तयेत्
So, with a mind engaged in yoga, one should discern and contemplate within oneself that innermost self, by means of devotion, detachment, and knowledge.
विगतमदस्य इंद्रस्य श्रीकृष्णसन्निधौ क्षमाप्रार्थनम् - श्रीशुक उवाच - ( अनुष्टुप् ) गोवर्धने धृते शैले आसाराद् रक्षिते व्रजे । गोलोकादाव्रजज् कृष्णं सुरभिः शक्र एव च
Śuka said: When the mountain was held up and the people of Vraja were protected from the downpour, Surabhi and Indra came to Kṛṣṇa in Goloka.
विविक्त उपसङ्गम्य व्रीडीतः कृतहेलनः । पस्पर्श पादयोरेनं किरीटेनार्कवर्चसा
Approaching him in private, ashamed for his offense, Indra touched Kṛṣṇa's feet with his crown shining like the sun.
दृष्टश्रुतानुभावोऽस्य कृष्णस्यामिततेजसः । नष्टत्रिलोकेशमद इदमाह कृताञ्जलिः
Having witnessed and heard of the power of Krishna, whose energy is boundless, and with the pride of the rulers of the three worlds destroyed, he spoke with joined palms.
इन्द्र उवाच - ( मिश्र ) विशुद्धसत्त्वं तव धाम शान्तं तपोमयं ध्वस्तरजस्तमस्कम् । मायामयोऽयं गुणसम्प्रवाहो न विद्यते ते ग्रहणानुबन्धः
Indra said: Your abode is of pure existence, peaceful, composed of austerity, and free from passion and darkness. This flow of qualities shaped by illusion does not bind you, nor is there any attachment for you.
कुतो नु तद्धेतव ईश तत्कृता लोभादयो येऽबुधलिन्गभावाः । तथापि दण्डं भगवान्बिभर्ति धर्मस्य गुप्त्यै खलनिग्रहाय
How then could there be causes such as greed and others, which arise from ignorance, O Lord? Yet, the Blessed One wields punishment for the protection of righteousness and the restraint of the wicked.
पिता गुरुस्त्वं जगतामधीशो दुरत्ययः काल उपात्तदण्डः । हिताय स्वेच्छातनुभिः समीहसे मानं विधुन्वन् जगदीशमानिनाम्
You are the father, the teacher, the ruler of all worlds, insurmountable time, who has taken up the rod of chastisement. For the welfare of all, you act through your own chosen forms, removing the pride of those who consider themselves lords of the world.
( इंद्रवंशा ) ये मद्विधाज्ञा जगदीशमानिनः त्वां वीक्ष्य कालेऽभयमाशु तन्मदम् । हित्वाऽऽर्यमार्गं प्रभजन्त्यपस्मया ईहा खलानामपि तेऽनुशासनम्
Those like me, who disregard your command and imagine themselves as lords of the world, upon seeing you at the proper time, quickly lose their arrogance and abandon the noble path, acting with disrespect; even for the wicked, your instruction is effective.
( मिश्र ) स त्वं ममैश्वर्यमदप्लुतस्य कृतागसस्तेऽविदुषः प्रभावम् । क्षन्तुं प्रभोऽथार्हसि मूढचेतसो मैवं पुनर्भून्मतिरीश मेऽसती
Therefore, O Lord, please forgive my offense, committed out of ignorance and pride in my own power. O Master, my mind was deluded; may such unworthy thoughts never arise in me again.
तवावतारोऽयमधोक्षजेह भुवो भराणां उरुभारजन्मनाम् । चमूपतीनामभवाय देव भवाय युष्मत् चरणानुवर्तिनाम्
This descent of yours, O Adhokṣaja, is for the removal of the heavy burden of the earth caused by powerful rulers, O God, for the destruction of armies and for the welfare of those who follow your feet.
( अनुष्टुप् ) नमस्तुभ्यं भगवते पुरुषाय महात्मने । वासुदेवाय कृष्णाय सात्वतां पतये नमः
Salutations to you, O Blessed One, the Supreme Person, the Great Soul; salutations to Vāsudeva, to Krishna, to the Lord of the Sātvatas.
स्वच्छन्दोपात्तदेहाय विशुद्धज्ञानमूर्तये । सर्वस्मै सर्वबीजाय सर्वभूतात्मने नमः
Salutations to the one who assumes a body at will, whose form is pure knowledge, to the all-pervading, the seed of all, the soul of all beings.
मयेदं भगवन् गोष्ठ नाशायासारवायुभिः । चेष्टितं विहते यज्ञे मानिना तीव्रमन्युना
O Lord, it was I who, driven by pride and intense anger, acted to destroy this cowherd settlement with storms and winds, after the sacrifice was interrupted by the arrogant.
त्वयेशानुगृहीतोऽस्मि ध्वस्तस्तम्भो वृथोद्यमः । ईश्वरं गुरुमात्मानं त्वामहं शरणं गतः
By your grace, I am freed from pride and my futile effort is destroyed; I have taken refuge in you, the Lord, the teacher, and the self.
श्रीशुक उवाच - एवं सङ्कीर्तितः कृष्णो मघोना भगवानमुम् । मेघगम्भीरया वाचा प्रहसन् इदमब्रवीत्
Śuka said: Thus, Krishna was praised by Maghavan, the Blessed One, who, smiling, spoke with a voice deep as thunderclouds.
श्रीभगवानुवाच - मया तेऽकारि मघवन् मखभङ्गोऽनुगृह्णता । मदनुस्मृतये नित्यं मत्तस्येन्द्रश्रिया भृशम्
The Blessed Lord said: O Maghavan, I broke your sacrifice to show you favor, so that you would always remember me, and not be intoxicated by Indra's glory.
मामैश्वर्यश्रीमदान्धो दण्डपाणिं न पश्यति । तं भ्रंशयामि सम्पद्भ्यो यस्य चेच्छाम्यनुग्रहम्
One blinded by pride in wealth and power does not see the wielder of the rod; I deprive such a person of their prosperity whenever I wish to show them mercy.
गम्यतां शक्र भद्रं वः क्रियतां मेऽनुशासनम् । स्थीयतां स्वाधिकारेषु युक्तैर्वः स्तम्भवर्जितैः
Go now, Śakra; may all be well with you. Let my instruction be followed. Remain in your own duties, free from pride and properly engaged.
अथाह सुरभिः कृष्णं अभिवन्द्य मनस्विनी । स्वसन्तानैरुपामन्त्र्य गोपरूपिणमीश्वरम्
Then Surabhi, thoughtful, approached Krishna, the Lord in the form of a cowherd, along with her offspring, and offered her respects.
सुरभिरुवाच - कृष्ण कृष्ण महायोगिन् विश्वात्मन् विश्वसम्भव । भवता लोकनाथेन सनाथा वयमच्युत
Surabhi said: Krishna, Krishna, great yogi, soul of the universe, origin of all, by you, the Lord of the worlds, we are protected, O infallible one.
त्वं नः परमकं दैवं त्वं न इन्द्रो जगत्पते । भवाय भव गोविप्र देवानां ये च साधवः
You are our supreme deity, not Indra, O Lord of the world; for the welfare of cows, brahmins, gods, and the virtuous, you exist.
इन्द्रं नस्त्वाभिषेक्ष्यामो ब्रह्मणा चोदिता वयम् । अवतीर्णोऽसि विश्वात्मम् भूमेर्भारापनुत्तये
We, prompted by Brahmā, shall anoint you, O Indra. You have descended, O Soul of the Universe, to remove the burden of the earth.
श्रीशुक उवाच - एवं कृष्णमुपामन्त्र्य सुरभिः पयसात्मनः । जलैराकाशगङ्गाया ऐरावतकरोद्धृतैः
Śuka said: Thus, after inviting Kṛṣṇa, Surabhi bathed him with her own milk, and with waters brought by Airāvata from the celestial Gaṅgā.
इन्द्रः सुरर्षिभिः साकं चोदितो देवमातृभिः । अभ्यसिञ्चत दाशार्हं गोविन्द इति चाभ्यधात्
Indra, together with the sages among the gods and prompted by the mothers of the gods, anointed the descendant of Daśārha, addressing him as Govinda.
( मिश्र ) तत्रागतास्तुम्बुरुनारदादयो गन्धर्वविद्याधरसिद्धचारणाः । जगुर्यशो लोकमलापहं हरेः सुराङ्गनाः संननृतुर्मुदान्विताः
There arrived Tumburu, Nārada, and others—Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, Siddhas, and Cāraṇas—who sang the fame of Hari, which destroys the impurities of the worlds, while the celestial women danced with joy.
तं तुष्टुवुर्देवनिकायकेतवो व्यवाकिरन् चाद्भुतपुष्पवृष्टिभिः । लोकाः परां निर्वृतिमाप्नुवंस्त्रयो गावस्तदा गामनयन् पयोद्रुताम्
The leaders of the divine hosts praised him, and showered wondrous rains of flowers; the three worlds attained supreme delight, and the cows then gave forth streams of milk.
( अनुष्टुप् ) नानारसौघाः सरितो वृक्षा आसन् मधुस्रवाः । अकृष्टपच्यौषधयो गिरयोऽबिभ्रदुन्मणीन्
Various groups of rivers and trees flowed with honey; grains and herbs grew without cultivation, and the mountains bore precious gems.
