Bhagavata Purana

आसुरी नाम पश्चाद् द्वाः तया याति पुरञ्जनः । ग्रामकं नाम विषयं दुर्मदेन समन्वितः

Through the western gate named Āsurī, Purañjana enters the territory called Grāmaka, accompanied by arrogance.

निर्‌ऋतिर्नाम पश्चाद् द्वाः तया याति पुरञ्जनः । वैशसं नाम विषयं लुब्धकेन समन्वितः

Through the western gate named Nirṛti, Purañjana enters the region called Vaiśasa, accompanied by greed.

अन्धावमीषां पौराणां निर्वाक् पेशस्कृतावुभौ । अक्षण्वतामधिपतिः ताभ्यां याति करोति च

The two city gates named Andha and Avamīṣā are silent and skillful; their lord, who possesses sight, passes through them and acts.

स यर्ह्यन्तःपुरगतो विषूचीनसमन्वितः । मोहं प्रसादं हर्षं वा याति जायात्मजोद्‍भवम्

When he enters the inner chambers, accompanied by Viṣūcī, he experiences delusion, pleasure, or joy arising from his wife and children.

एवं कर्मसु संसक्तः कामात्मा वञ्चितोऽबुधः । महिषी यद् यद् ईहेत तत्तद् एवान्ववर्तत

Thus, absorbed in actions, driven by desire, deceived and ignorant, he follows whatever his queen wishes.

क्वचित्पिबन्त्यां पिबति मदिरां मदविह्वलः । अश्नन्त्यां क्वचिदश्नाति जक्षत्यां सह जक्षिति

Sometimes, when she drinks, he drinks wine, intoxicated; when she eats, he eats, and when she enjoys, he enjoys with her.

क्वचिद्‍गायति गायन्त्यां रुदत्यां रुदति क्वचित् । क्वचिद् हसन्त्यां हसति जल्पन्त्यामनु जल्पति

Sometimes, when she sings, he sings; when she weeps, he weeps; sometimes, when she laughs, he laughs, and when she speaks, he speaks in turn.

क्वचिद् धावति धावन्त्यां तिष्ठन्त्यामनु तिष्ठति । अनु शेते शयानायां अन्वास्ते क्वचिदासतीम्

Sometimes, when she runs, he runs; when she stands, he stands; when she lies down, he lies down beside her, and sometimes he sits with her.

क्वचित् श्रृणोति श्रृण्वन्त्यां पश्यन्त्यामनु पश्यति । क्वचित् जिघ्रति जिघ्रन्त्यां स्पृशन्त्यां स्पृशति क्वचित्

Sometimes, when she listens, he listens; when she looks, he looks; sometimes, when she smells, he smells, and when she touches, he touches.

क्वचिच्च शोचतीं जायां अनु शोचति दीनवत् । अनु हृष्यति हृष्यन्त्यां मुदितामनु मोदते

Sometimes, when his wife grieves, he grieves with her, feeling sorrow; when she rejoices, he rejoices, sharing in her happiness.

विप्रलब्धो महिष्यैवं सर्वप्रकृतिवञ्चितः । नेच्छन् अनुकरोत्यज्ञः क्लैब्यात् क्रीडामृगो यथा

Thus deceived by his wife and all her qualities, even when unwilling, the ignorant man imitates her, like a plaything, out of weakness.

श्रीकृष्णस्य अलौकिकं प्रभावं दृष्ट्वा चकितान् गोपान प्रति नन्दस्य गर्गोक्तिकथनम् श्रीशुक उवाच - ( अनुष्टुप् ) एवंविधानि कर्माणि गोपाः कृष्णस्य वीक्ष्य ते । अतद्वीर्यविदः प्रोचुः समभ्येत्य सुविस्मिताः

Śuka said: Seeing such extraordinary deeds of Kṛṣṇa, the cowherds, amazed and unaware of his true power, approached and spoke to Nanda, recalling Garga's words.

बालकस्य यदेतानि कर्माणि अति अद्‍भुतानि वै । कथमर्हत्यसौ जन्म ग्राम्येष्वात्मजुगुप्सितम्

They said: These acts of the boy are truly astonishing; how could he be born among villagers, whose offspring are usually despised?

यः सप्तहायनो बालः करेणैकेन लीलया । कथं बिभ्रद् गिरिवरं पुष्करं गजराडिव

How could this child, only seven days old, effortlessly hold aloft the great mountain with a single hand, just as the king of elephants lifts a lotus?

तोकेनामीलिताक्षेण पूतनाया महौजसः । पीतः स्तनः सह प्राणैः कालेनेव वयस्तनोः

With his eyes only partly open in childish innocence, he drank the breast milk of the mighty Pūtanā, along with her very life, as time consumes the lives of all.

हिन्वतोऽधः शयानस्य मास्यस्य चरणावुदक् । अनोऽपतद् विपर्यस्तं रुदतः प्रपदाहतम्

While lying below, the infant's feet struck the cart, and the wheel fell down, overturned, as he cried and kicked it.

एकहायन आसीनो ह्रियमाणो विहायसा । दैत्येन यस्तृणावर्त महन् कण्ठग्रहातुरम्

Seated as a one-year-old, he was carried away through the sky by the demon Tṛṇāvarta, who grasped his neck, but he overcame that great affliction.

क्वचिद् हैयङ्‌गवस्तैन्ये मात्रा बद्ध उलूखले । गच्छन् अर्जुनयोर्मध्ये बाहुभ्यां तावपातयत्

Once, when his mother had tied him to a mortar for stealing butter, he walked between the two arjuna trees and caused them to fall with his arms.

वने सञ्चारयन् वत्सान् सरामो बालकैर्वृतः । हन्तुकामं बकं दोर्भ्यां मुखतोऽरिमपाटयत्

In the forest, tending calves, surrounded by other boys, he tore apart the mouth of the demon Baka with his hands, though Baka intended to kill him.

वत्सेषु वत्सरूपेण प्रविशन्तं जिघांसया । हत्वा न्यपातयत्तेन कपित्थानि च लीलया

When the demon, disguised as a calf, entered among the calves to kill him, he slew him and, with playful ease, knocked down the kapittha fruits.

हत्वा रासभदैतेयं तद्‍बन्धूंश्च बलान्वितः । चक्रे तालवनं क्षेमं परिपक्व फलान्वितम्

He killed the ass-demon and his powerful companions, and made the tāla grove safe, filled with ripe fruits.

प्रलम्बं घातयित्वोग्रं बलेन बलशालिना । अमोचयद् व्रजपशून् गोपांश्चारण्यवह्नितः

By his strength, he slew the fierce Pralamba demon, and freed the cows and cowherds from the forest fire.

आशीविषतमाहीन्द्रं दमित्वा विमदं ह्रदात् । प्रसह्योद्वास्य यमुनां चक्रेऽसौ निर्विषोदकाम्

He subdued the great serpent king, drained of his pride, and drove him from the lake; thus, he made the waters of the Yamunā free from poison.

दुस्त्यजश्चानुरागोऽस्मिन् सर्वेषां नो व्रजौकसाम् । नन्द ते तनयेऽस्मासु तस्याप्यौत्पत्तिकः कथम्

All the residents of Vraja have an affection for him that cannot be abandoned; Nanda, how could such innate love arise in us for your son?

क्व सप्तहायनो बालः क्व महाद्रिविधारणम् । ततो नो जायते शङ्‌का व्रजनाथ तवात्मजे

How can a seven-day-old child perform the feat of holding up a great mountain? Therefore, O leader of Vraja, we have doubts about your son.

श्रीनन्द उवाच - श्रूयतां मे वचो गोपा व्येतु शङ्‌का च वोऽर्भके । एनं कुमारमुद्दिश्य गर्गो मे यदुवाच ह

Śrī Nanda said: Listen to my words, O cowherds, and let your doubts about the boy be dispelled. Regarding this child, Garga, the Yadu sage, spoke to me.

वर्णास्त्रयः किलास्यासन् गृह्णतोऽनुयुगं तनूः । शुक्लो रक्तस्तथा पीत इदानीं कृष्णतां गतः

He has assumed three colors in successive ages: white, red, and yellow; now he has taken on a dark complexion.

प्रागयं वसुदेवस्य क्वचित् जातः तवात्मजः । वासुदेव इति श्रीमान् अभिज्ञाः सम्प्रचक्षते

Previously, this illustrious one was born as the son of Vasudeva; now, he is your son. The wise call him Vāsudeva.

बहूनि सन्ति नामानि रूपाणि च सुतस्य ते । गुण कर्मानुरूपाणि तान्यहं वेद नो जनाः

Your son has many names and forms, corresponding to his qualities and deeds. I know them, but people do not.
