ग्रीवा सार्द्धकला कार्य्या तद्विस्तारोपशोभिता। नेत्रं विना तु विस्तारौ ऊरू जानू च पिण्डिका
The neck should be made one and a half kalās, adorned with its breadth; except for the eyes, the thighs, knees, and pedestal should be made in width.
अङ्घ्निपृष्ठौ स्फिचौ कट्यां यथायोगं प्रकल्पयेत्। सप्तांशोनास्तथाङ्गुल्यो दीर्घं विष्कम्भनाहतम्
The backs of the ankles, the hips, and the waist should be arranged appropriately; the fingers should be seven parts, and the length reduced by the span.
नेत्रैकवर्जितायामा जङ्घोरू च तथा कटिः। मध्यपार्श्वं च तद्वृत्तं घनं पीनं कुचद्वयम्
Where there is absence of one eye, the thighs, knees, and waist are likewise described; the middle sides are rounded, dense, and the pair of breasts are full.
तालमात्रौ स्तनौ कार्य्यौ कटिः सार्द्धकलाधिका। लक्ष्म शेषं पुरावत्स्यात् दक्षिणे चाम्बुजं करे
The breasts should each be the size of a palm; the waist is slightly more than half a unit; the remaining marks are as before, and on the right hand there is a lotus.
वामे विल्वं स्वियौ पार्श्वे शुभे चामरहस्तके। दीर्घघोणस्तुगरुडश्चक्राङ्गाद्यानथो वदे
On the left, a bael fruit; on both sides, auspiciously, a yak-tail in hand; a long nose, heavy chin, and limbs marked with a wheel—these, I now declare.
भगवानुवाच शालग्रामादिमूर्त्तिश्च वक्षयेहं भुक्तिमुक्तिदाः। वासुदेवोऽसितो द्वारे शिलालग्नद्विचक्रकः
The Blessed Lord spoke: I shall describe the forms beginning with Shalagrama, which grant both enjoyment and liberation; Vasudeva is dark at the entrance, fixed in stone, with two wheels.
ज्ञेयः सङ्कर्षणो लग्नद्विचक्रो रक्त उत्तमः। सूक्ष्मचक्रो बहुच्छिद्रः प्रद्युम्नो नीलदीर्घकः
He should be known as Sankarshana, fixed with two wheels, excellent and red; Pradyumna is subtle-wheeled, with many holes, blue and long.
पीतोनिरुद्धः पद्माङ्को वर्त्तुलो द्वित्रिरेखवान्। कृष्णो नारायणो नाभ्युन्नतः शुषिरदीर्घवान्
Pita is Niruddha, marked with a lotus, round, and bearing two or three lines; Krishna Narayana is raised at the navel, with a cavity and elongated.
परमेष्ठी साब्जचक्रः पृष्ठच्छिद्रश्च विन्दुमान्। स्थूलचक्रोऽसितो विष्णुर्मध्ये रेखा गदाकृतिः
Parameshthi is marked with a lotus wheel, has a hole on the back, and bears a dot; Vishnu is dark with a thick wheel, and in the middle a line shaped like a mace.
नृसिंहः कपिलः स्थूलचक्रः स्यात् पञ्चविन्दुकः। वराहः शक्तिलिङ्गः स्यात् तच्चक्रौ विषमौ मृतौ
Narasimha is tawny, with a thick wheel and five dots; Varaha is marked with a spear symbol, and if the wheels are uneven, it is considered inauspicious.
इन्द्रनीलनिभः स्थूलस्त्रिरेखालाञ्छितः शुभः। कूर्मस्तथोन्नतः पृष्ठे वर्त्तलावर्त्तकोऽसितः
Resembling a sapphire, thick, adorned with three lines, auspicious; Kurma is likewise raised on the back, with a whirlpool mark, and dark.
हयग्रीवोङ्कुशाकाररेखो नीलः सविन्दुकः। वैकुण्ठः एकचक्रोऽब्जी मणिभः पुच्छरेखकः
Hayagriva has a mark like a goad, is blue, and bears dots; Vaikuntha has one wheel, is lotus-like, gem-like, and has a tail line.
मत्स्यो दीर्घस्त्रिविन्दुः स्यात् काचवर्णस्तु पूरितः। श्यामस्त्रिविक्रमो दक्षरेखस्तु वर्त्तुलः
Matsya is long, with three dots, and filled with a glass-like color; Shyama Trivikrama has a right-side line and is round.
वामनो वर्त्तुलश्चातिह्रस्वो नीलः सविन्दुकः। श्यामस्त्रिविक्रमो दक्षरेखो वामेन विन्दुकः
Vamana is round, very short, blue, and bears dots; Shyama Trivikrama has a right-side line, and on the left, a dot.
अनन्तो नागभोगाङ्गो नैकाभो नैकमूर्त्तिमान्। स्थूलो दामोदरो मध्यचक्रो द्वाः सूक्ष्मविन्दुकः
Ananta has the form of a serpent coil, many marks, and many forms; Damodara is thick, with a central wheel, and at the entrance a subtle dot.
सुदर्शनस्त्वेकचक्रो लक्ष्मीनारायणो द्वयात्। चित्रक्रश्चाच्युतो देवस्त्रिचक्रो वा त्रिविक्रमः
Sudarshana has one wheel; Lakshmi Narayana has two; Chitrakra is Achyuta, the god, with three wheels, or Trivikrama.
जनार्द्दनश्चतुस्चक्रो वासुदेवस्च पञ्चभिः। षट्रचक्रस्चौव प्रद्युम्नः सङ्कर्षणश्च सप्तभिः
Janardana has four wheels; Vasudeva has five; Pradyumna has six wheels, and Sankarshana has seven.
पुरुषोत्तमोष्टचक्रो नवव्यूहो नवाङ्कितः। दशावतारो दशभिर्द्दशैकेनानिरुद्धकः
Purushottama has eight wheels; Navavyuha is marked with nine; Dashavatara has ten, and Aniruddha has ten plus one.
द्वाधशात्मा द्वादशभिरत ऊद्र्ध्वमनन्तकः
The twelvefold form has twelve wheels; above, Ananta is so described.
भगवानुवाच शालग्रामादिचक्राङ्कपूजाः सिद्ध्यैवदामि ते। त्रिविधास्याद्धरेः पूजा काम्याकाम्योभयात्मिका
The Blessed Lord spoke: I grant you the success of worships marked by wheels, beginning with Shalagrama; the worship of Hari is threefold—desire-based, desireless, and mixed.
मीनादीनान्त पञ्चानां काम्याथो वोभयात्मिका वराहस्प नृसिंहस्य वामनस्य चमुक्तये
Of the five beginning with the Fish, the worship is either for desire or both; for the Boar, the Man-Lion, and the Dwarf, it is for liberation.
चक्रादीनां त्रयाणान्तु शालग्रामार्च्चनं श्रृणु। उत्तमा निष्फला पूजा कनिष्ठा सफलार्चना
Now hear about the worship of the three beginning with the Disc at the śālagrāma stone: the highest worship is fruitless, the lowest yields results.
मध्यमा मूर्त्तिपूजा स्याच्चक्राव्जे चतुरस्रके। प्रणवं हृदि विन्यस्य षडङ्गङ्करदेहयोः
The middle worship is image worship, performed on the disc, the lotus, and the square; placing the praṇava in the heart and the six limbs on the hands and body.
कृतमुद्रात्रयश्चक्राद् बहिः पूर्वे गुरुं यजेत्। आप्ये गणं वायवे च धातारं नैर्ऋते यजेत्
Having made the three gestures outside the disc, one should first worship the teacher; in the east, the group for Vāyu, and the creator in the southwest.
विधातारञ्च कर्त्तारं हर्त्तारं दक्षसौम्ययोः। विष्वकसेनं यजेदीशे आग्नेये क्षेत्रपालकम्
One should worship the arranger and the doer, the remover in the south and northwest; Viṣvaksena in the northeast, and the field-guardian in the southeast.
ऋगादिवेदान् प्रागादौ आधारानन्तकं भुवम्। पीठं पद्मं चार्क वन्द्रवह्व्याख्यं मण्डलत्रयम्
The Ṛg and other Vedas are placed in the east at the beginning, the earth up to Ananta as the base; the seat, the lotus, and the three circles called Arka, Vandra, and Vahvya.
आसनं द्वादशार्णेन तत्र स्थाप्य शिलां यजेत्। व्यस्तेन च समस्तेन स्वबीजेन यजेत् क्रमात्
On a twelve-spoked seat, one should place the stone there and worship; separately and together, one should worship with one's own seed-mantra, in order.
पूर्वादावथ वेदाद्यैर्गायत्रीभ्यां जितादिना। प्रणवेनार्च्चयेत् पञ्चान्मुद्रास्तिस्रः प्रदर्शयेत्
Then, beginning in the east, with the Vedas and the Gāyatrī, with Jitā and others, worship the five with praṇava, and show three gestures.
विष्वक्सेनस्य चक्रस्य क्षेत्रपालस्य दर्शयेत्। शालग्रामस्य प्रथमा पूजाथो निष्फलोच्यते
Show the gestures for Viṣvaksena, the disc, and the field-guardian; the first worship of the śālagrāma is said to be fruitless.
पूर्ववत् षोडशारञ्च सपद्मं मण्डलं लिखेत्। शङ्खचक्रगदाखड्गैर्गुर्वाद्यं पूर्वंवद्यजेत्
As before, draw a sixteen-spoked circle with a lotus; worship the teacher and others first with conch, disc, mace, and sword.
