Agni Purana

तर्ज्जन्यनामिका चैव तस्मादर्द्धाङ्गुलं विना। कनिष्ठाङ्गुष्ठकौ कार्यौ चतुरङ्गुलम्मितौ

The index and ring fingers, except for half a finger-width, should be made; the little finger and thumb should be four finger-widths each.

द्विपर्वोङगुष्ठकः कार्यः शेषांगुल्यस्त्रिपर्विकाः। सर्वासां पर्वणोर्द्धेन नखमानं विधीयते

The thumb should have two joints, and the remaining fingers three joints each; above all the joints, the measurement of the nails is prescribed.

वक्षसो यत् प्रमाणन्तु जठरं तत्‌प्रमाणतः। अङ्‌गुलैकं भवेन्नाभी वेधेन च प्रमाणतः

The measurement of the chest is also the measurement of the abdomen; the navel should be one finger-width in diameter, measured accordingly.

ततो मेढ्रान्तरं कार्यं तालमात्रं प्रमाणतः। नाभिमध्ये परीणाहो द्विचत्वारिंशदङ्गुलैः

Then, the space between the genitals should be made the size of a tala (hand-span); the circumference at the middle of the navel is forty-two finger-widths.

अन्तरं स्तनयोः कार्य्यं तालमात्रं प्रमाणतः। चिवुकौ यवमानौ तु मण्डलं द्विपदं भवेत्

The space between the breasts should be made the size of a tala (hand-span); the nipples are barley-sized, and the areola is two finger-widths.

चतुः षष्ट्यङ्गुलं कार्यं वेष्टनं वक्षसः स्फुटम्। चतुर्मुखञ्च तदधोवेष्टनं परिकीर्त्तितम्

The wrapping around the chest should be sixty-four finger-widths, clearly; and the wrapping below that, for the four-faced figure, is so described.

परिणाहस्तथा कट्या चतुः पञ्चाशदङ्गुलैः। विस्तारश्चोरुमूले तु प्रोच्यते द्वादशाङ्गुलः

The circumference of the waist is fifty-four finger-widths; the breadth at the root of the thighs is said to be twelve finger-widths.

तस्मादभ्यधिकं मध्ये ततो निम्नतरं क्रमात्। विस्तृताष्टाङ्गुलं जानुत्रिगुणा परिणाहतः

From there, the middle is greater, and then gradually lower; the knee's circumference is three times eight finger-widths.

जङ्घा मध्ये तु विस्तारः सप्ताङ्गुल उदाहृतः। त्रिगुणा परिधिश्चास्य जङ्घाग्रं पञ्चविस्तरात्

The breadth at the middle of the calf is stated as seven finger-widths; its circumference is three times that, and the calf's end is five finger-widths in breadth.

त्रिगुणा परिधिस्चास्य पादौ तालप्रमाणकौ। आयामादुत्थितौ पादौ चतुरङ्गुलमेव च

Its circumference is three times that, and the feet are measured by the tala (hand-span); the feet, raised from the length, are four finger-widths.

गुल्फात् पूर्वं तु कर्त्तव्यं प्रमाणाच्चतुरङ्गेलम्। त्रिकलं विस्तृतौ पादौ त्र्यङ्गुलो गुह्यकः स्मृतः

Before the ankle, it should be made four finger-widths by measurement; the feet have three divisions in width, and the heel is remembered as three finger-widths.

पञ्चाङ्गुलन्तु नाहोस्य दीर्घा तद्वत् प्रदेशिनी। अष्टमाष्टांशतो न्यूताः शेषाङ्गुल्यः क्रमेण तु

The big toe is five finger-widths long, and likewise the index toe; the remaining toes are each less by one-eighth, in order.

सपादाङ्गुलमुत्तसेधमङगुष्ठस्य प्रकीर्त्तितम्। यवोनमङ्गुलं कार्यमङ्गुष्ठस्य नखं तथा

The upper nail of the thumb is said to be one and a quarter finger-widths; the nail of the thumb should be made the size of a barley grain.

अर्द्धाङ्गुलं तथान्यासां क्रमान् न्यूनं तु कारयेत्। त्र्यङ्गुलौ वृषणौ कार्यौ मेढ्रं तु चतुरङ्गुम्

For the other parts, make each successively half a finger less; the testicles should be three fingers, and the penis four fingers.

परिणाहोत्र कोषाग्रं कर्त्तव्यञ्चतुरङ्गुलम्। षडङ्गुलपरीणाहौ वृषणौ परिकीर्त्तितौ

The tip of the scrotum should be made four fingers; the testicles are described as having a circumference of six fingers.

प्रतिमा भूषणाढ्या स्यादेतदुद्देशलक्षणम्। अनयैव दिशा कार्यं लोके दृष्ट्वा तु लक्षणम्

The image should be adorned with ornaments; this is the specification for its features. In this manner, one should make it, observing the characteristics seen in the world.

दक्षिणे तु करे चक्रमधस्तात् पद्ममेव च। वामे शङ्खं गदीदसितद्वासुदेवस्य लक्षणात्

On the right hand, place a discus, and below it a lotus; on the left, a conch and a mace, according to the marks of the dark-clad Vāsudeva.

श्रीपुष्टी चापि कर्त्तव्ये पद्मवीणाकरान्विते। ऊरुमात्रोच्छितायामे मालाविद्याधरौ तथा

Also, make Śrī and Puṣṭi, with hands holding a lotus and a vīṇā; with thighs raised in length, and likewise garland-bearers and those holding knowledge.

प्रभामण्डलसंस्थौ तौ प्रभा हस्त्यादिभूषणा। पद्माभं पादपीठन्तु प्रतिमास्वेवमाचरेत्

Those two should be placed within a circle of radiance, with brilliance and ornaments like elephants; the foot-rest should be lotus-like, and thus should be done for the images.

भगवानुवाच पिण्डिकालक्षणं वक्ष्ये दैर्घ्यैण प्रतिमासमा। उच्छायं प्रतिमार्द्धन्तु चतुः षष्टिपुटां च ताम्

The Blessed Lord said: I will describe the characteristics of the pedestal, equal in length to the image; its height should be half the image, and its width four or sixty units.

त्यक्त्वा पङ्‌क्तिद्वयं चाधस्तदूद्‌र्ध्वं यत्तु कोष्ठकम्। समन्तादुभयोः पार्श्वे अन्तस्थं परिमार्जयेत्

Leaving two rows below and above, one should carefully smooth the inner part on both sides all around.

ऊद्‌र्ध्वं पङ्‌क्तिद्वयं त्यक्त्वा अधस्ताद् यत्तु कोष्ठकम्। अन्तः सम्मार्जयेत् यत्नात् पार्श्वयोरुभयोः समम्

Leaving two rows above, and below what is the chamber, one should carefully smooth the inner part equally on both sides.

तयोर्मध्यगतौ तत्र चतुष्कौ मार्जयेत्ततः। चतुर्द्धा भाजयित्वा तु ऊद्‌र्ध्वपङ्‌क्तिद्वयं बुधः

In the middle of those two, one should smooth four parts there; after dividing the two upper rows into four, the wise should proceed.

मेखला भागमात्रा स्यात् खातं तस्यार्द्धमानतः। भागं भागं परित्यज्य पार्श्वयोरुभयोः समम्

The belt should be of one part, and its hollow half that measure; leaving part by part, make both sides equal.

दत्त्वा चैकं पदं बाह्ये प्रमाणं कारयेद् बुधः। त्रिभागेण च बागस्याग्रे स्यात्तोयविनिर्गमः

Giving one foot externally, the wise should make the measure; at the front of the part, there should be an outlet for water, in three divisions.

नानाप्रकारभेदेन भद्रेयं पिण्डिका शुभा। अष्टताला तु कर्त्तव्या देवी लक्ष्मीस्तथा स्त्रियः

This auspicious pedestal is made in various ways; for the goddess Lakṣmī and women, it should be made eight tālas.

भ्रुवौ यवाधिके कार्य्ये यवहीना तु नासिका। गोलकेनाधिकं वक्त्रमूद्‌र्ध्वं तिर्य्यग्विवर्जितम्

The eyebrows should be made slightly longer, and the nose slightly shorter; the face should be made more rounded above, avoiding transverse openings.

आयते नयने कार्य्यं त्रिभागोनैर्यवैस्त्रिभिः। तदर्द्धेन तु वैपुल्यं नेत्रयोः परिकल्पयेत्

The eyes should be made elongated, with three parts of barley; the width of the eyes should be calculated as half that.

कर्णपाशोऽधिकः कार्य्यः सृक्कणीसमसूत्रतः। नम्रं कलाविहीनन्तु कुर्य्यादंशद्वयं तथा

The ear-attachment should be made larger, equal to the jawline; the two lips should be made curved and without art.
