कुरुक्षेत्रे गयादौ च नदीनान्तु समीपतः। ब्रह्मा मध्ये तु नगरे पूर्वे शक्रस्य शोभनम्
At Kurukṣetra, Gayā, and similar places, and near rivers, Brahmā should be in the center of the city; in the east, the seat of Indra is auspicious.
अग्नावग्नेश्च मातॄणां भूतानाञ्च यमस्य च। दक्षिणे चण्डिकायाश्च पितृदैत्यादिकस्य च
In the southeast, the temple of Agni and Agneya; in the south, for the Mothers, Bhūtas, and Yama; in the southwest, for Caṇḍikā and for ancestors, demons, and others.
नैर्ऋते मन्दिरं कुर्यात् वरूणादेश्चवारुणे। वायोर्न्नागस्य वायव्ये सौम्ये यक्षगुहस्य च
In the west, the temple should be for Nairṛta and Varuṇa; in the northwest, for Vāyu and Nāga; in the north, for Soma and Yakṣa's cave.
चण्डीशस्य महेशस्य ऐशे विष्णोश्च सर्वशः। पूर्वदेवकुलं पीड्य प्रासादं स्वल्पकं त्वथ
In the northeast, for Caṇḍīśa and Maheśa, and for Viṣṇu in all respects; after establishing the eastern temple, a small shrine should be built.
समं वाप्यधिकं वापि न कर्त्तव्यं विजानता। उभयोर्द्विगुणां सीमांत्वक्त्वा चोच्छयसम्मिताम्
One who knows should not make it equal or greater; having left a boundary twice the size of both, corresponding to the height,
प्रासादं कारयेदन्यं नोभयं पीडयेद् बुधः। भूमौ तु शोधितायां तु कुर्याद्भूमिपरिग्रहम्
A wise person should construct another temple, but not oppress both; on purified ground, one should acquire the land.
प्राकारसीमापर्य्यन्तं ततो भूतबलिं हरेत्। माषं हरिद्राचूर्णन्तु सलाजं दधिसक्तुभिः
Up to the boundary of the enclosure wall, one should offer oblations to the spirits: grains, turmeric powder, with fried grains, curd, and parched flour.
अष्टाक्षरेण सक्तूँश्च पातयित्वाष्टदिक्षु च। राक्षसाश्च पिशाचाश्च यस्मिंस्तिष्ठन्ति भूतले
Having scattered parched flour with the eight-syllable mantra in the eight directions, for the Rākṣasas and Piśācas who dwell on the earth,
सर्व्वे ते व्यपगच्छन्तु स्थानं कुर्य्यामहं हरेः। हलेन वाहयित्वा गां गोभिश्चैवावदारयेत्
May all of them depart; I shall establish the place of Hari. Having ploughed the ground with a plough, one should also break it with cows.
परमाण्वष्टकेनैव रथरेणुः प्रकीर्तितः। रथरेण्वष्टकेनैव त्रसरेणुः प्रकीर्त्यते
Eight atoms make what is called a chariot-dust; eight chariot-dusts are said to make a trasareṇu.
तैरष्टभिस्तु बालाग्रं लिख्या तैरष्टभिर्मता। ताभिर्यूकाष्टभिः ख्याता ताश्चाष्टौ यवमध्यमः
Eight of these make a hair-tip, and eight of those are considered a louse; eight of those are known, and eight of those make a middle-sized barley grain.
यवाष्टकैरङ्गुलं स्याच्चतुर्विंशाङ्गुलः करः। चतुरङ्गुलसंयुक्तः स हस्तः पद्महस्तकः
Eight barley grains make an aṅgula (finger-breadth); twenty-four aṅgulas make a kara (hand); a hand joined with four aṅgulas is called a lotus-hand.
भगवानुवाच पूर्व्वमासीत् महद्भूतं सर्व्वभूतभयङ्करम्। तद्देवैर्न्निहितं भूमौ स वास्तुपुरुषः स्मृतः
The Blessed Lord said: Formerly there was a great being, terrifying to all creatures; the gods confined it within the earth, and it is known as the Vāstupuruṣa.
चतुः षष्टिपदे क्षेत्रे ईशं कोणार्द्धसंस्थितम्। घृताक्षतैस्तर्प्पयेत्तं पर्ज्जन्यं पदगं ततः
In a plot divided into sixty-four squares, the Lord is established at the half of each corner; one should offer oblations of ghee and rice grains there, and then to Parjanya at the next square.
उत्पलाद्भिर्जयन्तञ्च द्विपदस्थं पताकया। महेन्द्रञ्चैककोष्ठस्थं सर्व्वरक्तैः पदे रविम्
To Jayanta, situated on the lotus and at the two-footed square, with a banner; to Mahendra, in a single compartment; to the Sun, in every square, with red offerings.
वितानेनार्द्धपदगं सत्यं पदे भृशं घृतैः। व्योम शाकुनमांसेन कोणार्द्धपदसंस्थितम्
To Vitāna, at the half-square, to Satya at the square, with abundant ghee; to Vyoma, established at the half-square of the corner, with bird flesh.
स्रुचा चार्द्धपदे वह्नि पूषणं लाजयैकतः। स्वर्णेन वितथं द्विष्ठं मंथनेन गृहक्षतम्
To Vahni, at the half-square, with a ladle; to Pūṣan, with parched grain in a single square; to Vitatha, with gold in the second square; to Gṛhakṣata, with churning sticks.
मांसौदनेन धर्म्मेशमेकैकस्मिन् स्थितं द्वयम्। गन्धर्वं द्विपदं गन्धैर्भृशं शाकुनजिह्वया
To Dharmmeśa, with meat and rice in each of the two squares; to Gandharva, at the two-footed square, with fragrant substances and especially with bird tongues.
एकस्थमर्धसंस्थञ्च मृगं नीलपटैस्तथा। पितॄन् कृशरयार्द्धस्थं दन्तकाष्ठैः पदस्थितम्
To Mṛga, established singly and at the half-square, with blue cloths; to the Ancestors, at the half-square with thin rice, and at the square with tooth-wood sticks.
दौवारिकं द्विसंस्थञ्च सुग्रीवं यावकेन तु। पुष्पदन्तं कुशस्तम्बैः पद्मैर्व्वरुणमेकतः
To the Gatekeeper, in the two squares, and to Sugrīva, with barley; to Puṣpadanta, with blades of kuśa grass; to Varuṇa, in a single square, with lotuses.
असुरं सुरया द्विष्ठं पदे शेषं घृताम्भसा। यवैः पापं पदार्द्धस्थं रोगमध्ये च मण्डकैः
To the Asura, in the second square, with surā liquor; to Śeṣa, at the square, with ghee and water; to Pāpa, at the half-square, with barley; to Disease, in the middle, with cakes.
नागपुष्पैः पदे नागं मुख्यं भक्ष्यैर्हि संस्थितम्। मुद्गोदनेन भल्लाटं पदे सोमं पदे तथा
To Nāga, at the square, with nāga flowers; to Bhakṣya, the chief, with food; to Bhallāṭa, with mung-bean rice; to Soma, at the square, likewise.
मधुना पायसेनाथ शालूकेन ऋषिं द्वये। पदे दितिं लोपिकाभिरर्द्धे दितिमथापरम्
To the Sage, with honey, milk-rice, and lotus-stalk, in two squares; to Diti, with sesame cakes at one half, and to Diti again at the other half.
पूरिकाभिस्ततञ्चापमीशाधः पयसा पदे। ततोधश्चापवत्सन्तु दध्ना चैकपदे स्थितम्
To Āpa, with fried cakes, below Īśa, with milk at the square; and below that, to Āpa again, with curd in a single square.
लड्ङुकैश्च मरीचिन्तु पूर्वकोष्ठचतष्टये । सवित्रे रक्तपुष्पाणि ब्रह्माधः कोणकोष्ठके
To Marīci, with fried cakes, in the four eastern compartments; to Savitṛ, with red flowers; below Brahmā, in the corner compartment.
तदधः कोष्ठके दद्यात् सावित्र्यै च कुशोदकम्। विवस्वतेऽरुणं दद्याच्चन्दनञ्चतुरङ्घ्निषु
Below that, in the compartment, one should offer water with kuśa grass to Sāvitrī; to Vivasvat, Aruṇa, with sandalwood at the four-footed squares.
रक्षोधः कोणकोष्ठे तु इन्द्रायान्नं निशान्वितम्। इन्द्रजयाय तस्याधो घृतान्नं कोणकोष्ठके
Below the Rakṣas, in the corner compartment, one should offer cooked food to Indra at night; below that, to Indrajaya, in the corner compartment, with rice cooked in ghee.
चतुष्पदेषु दातव्यमिन्द्राय गुडपायसम्। वाय्वधः कोणदेशे तु रुद्राय पक्कमांसकम्
In the four-footed squares, one should give sweet rice to Indra; below Vāyu, in the corner, to Rudra, cooked meat.
तदधः कोणकोष्ठे तु यक्षायार्द्धं फलन्तथा। महीधराय मांसान्नं माषञ्च चतुरङ्घ्रिषु
Below that, in the corner compartment, to Yakṣa, half a fruit likewise; to Mahīdhara, meat and black gram at the four-footed squares.
मध्ये चतुष्पदे स्थाप्या ब्रह्मणे तिलतण्डुलाः। चरकीं माषसर्प्पिर्भ्यां स्कन्दं कृशरयासृजा
In the middle of the four-footed squares, sesame and rice for Brahmā; to Skanda, in the same place, with black gram, clarified butter, and thin rice gruel.
