Agni Purana

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्जाग्रत्‌स्थानविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्विराडात्मविवर्जितं ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the waking state; I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the cosmic self.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्जाग्रत्स्थानविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्विश्वभावविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the waking state; I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the nature of the universe.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिराकाराक्षरवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्वाक्‌पाण्यङ्‌घ्रिविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from form and syllables; I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from speech, hands, and feet.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः पायूपस्थविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः श्रोत्रत्वक्‌चक्षुरुज्भ्क्तितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the anus and genitals; I am Brahman, the supreme light, transcending hearing, touch, sight, and taste.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतीरसरूपविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः सर्वगन्धविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from all forms; I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from all scents.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्जिह्वाघ्राणविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः स्पर्शशब्दविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from tongue and nose; I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from touch and sound.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्म्मनोबुद्धिविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिश्रित्ताहङ्कारवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from mind and intellect; I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from memory and ego.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः प्राणापानविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्व्यानोदानविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from prāṇa and apāna. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from vyāna and udāna.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः समानपरिवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्जरामरणवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from samāna. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from old age and death.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः शोकमोहविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः क्षुत्पिपासाविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from sorrow and delusion. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from hunger and thirst.

अहं ब्रहम परं ज्योतिः शब्दोद्भूतादिवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्हिरण्यगर्भवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from what arises from sound and the like. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from Hiraṇyagarbha.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः स्वप्नावस्थाविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिस्तेजसादिविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the state of dream. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from brilliance and the like.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिरपकारादिवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः सभाज्ञानविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from harm and the like. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from all knowledge and ignorance.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिरध्याहृतविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः सत्त्वादिगुणवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from what is superimposed. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the qualities of sattva and the rest.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः सदसद्भाववर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः सर्वावयववर्जितं ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from existence and non-existence. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from all parts.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्भेदाभेदविवर्जितं । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः सुषुप्तिस्थानवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from difference and non-difference. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the state of deep sleep.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः प्राज्ञभावविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्मकारादिविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the state of prājña. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the syllable 'ma' and the like.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्मानमेयविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिर्मितिमातृविवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from measure and what is measured. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from limitation and the measurer.

अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः साक्षइत्वादिविवर्जितम् । अहं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः कार्य्यकारणवर्जितम् ।। ३७८.

I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from the state of being a witness and the like. I am Brahman, the supreme light, free from cause and effect.

देहेन्द्रियमनोबुद्दिप्राणाहङ्कारवर्जितं । जाग्रत् सप्नसुषुप्त्यादिमुक्तं ब्रह्म तुरीयकं ।। ३७८.

Free from body, senses, mind, intellect, vital breath, and ego; liberated from waking, dream, deep sleep, and the rest—Brahman is the fourth state.

नित्याशुद्दबुद्धमुक्तं सत्यमानन्दमद्वयम् । ब्रह्माहमस्म्यहं ब्रह्म सविज्ञानं विमुक्त ओं ३७८.

Eternal, pure, awakened, liberated, true, blissful, nondual—such is Brahman. I am that Brahman, I am Brahman, endowed with knowledge, liberated. Om.

अग्निरुवाच यज्ञैश्च देवानाप्नोति वैराजं तपसा पदं । ब्रह्मणः कर्मसन्नयासाद्वैराग्यात् प्रकृतौ लयं ।। ३७९.

Agni said: By sacrifices, one attains the gods; by austerity, the state of Virāja; by the combination of actions, the state of Brahman; by detachment, dissolution into nature.

ज्ञानात् प्नाप्नोति कैवल्यं पञ्चैता गतयः स्मृता । प्रीतितापविषादादेर्विनिवृत्तिर्विरक्तता ।। ३७९.

By knowledge, one attains liberation—these five paths are remembered. Renunciation is the turning away from pleasure, pain, sorrow, and the rest.

सन्न्यासः कर्मणान्त्यागः कृतानामकृतैः सह । अव्यक्तादौ विशेषान्ते विकारोऽस्मिन्निविर्त्तते ।। ३७९.

Renunciation is the abandonment of actions, both performed and unperformed. From the unmanifest at the beginning to the particular at the end, transformation ceases in this.

चेतनाचेतनान्यत्वज्ञानेन ज्ञानमुच्यते । परमात्मा च सर्वेषामाधारः परमेश्वरः ।। ३७९.

Knowledge is the understanding of the difference between the sentient and the insentient. The supreme self is the support of all, the supreme Lord.

विष्णुनाम्ना च देवेषु वेदान्तेषु च गीयते । यज्ञेश्वरो यज्ञपुमान् प्रवृत्तेरिज्यते ह्यसौ ।। ३७९.

By the name of Viṣṇu among the gods and in the Upaniṣads he is sung; as the Lord of sacrifice, the Person of sacrifice, he is indeed worshipped through action.

निवृत्तैर्ज्ञानयोगेन ज्ञानमूर्त्तिः स चेक्ष्यते । ह्रस्वदीर्घप्लुताद्यन्तु वचस्तत्पुरुषोत्तमः ।। ३७९.

By those who have withdrawn, through the yoga of knowledge, he is seen as the embodiment of knowledge; that Supreme Person is described by words—short, long, and protracted.

तत्‌प्राप्तिहेतुर्ज्ञानञ्च कर्म चोक्तं महामुने । आगमोक्तं विवेकाच्च द्विधा ज्ञानं तथोच्यते ।। ३७९.

Knowledge and action are declared, O great sage, as causes for attaining that; knowledge is said to be twofold, according to scripture and discernment.

शब्दब्रह्मागममयं परं ब्रह्म सत्परम् । द्वे ब्रह्मणी वेदितव्ये ब्रह्मशब्दपरञ्च यत् ।। ३७९.

The supreme Brahman, the highest truth, consists of the tradition of the word and the Veda; two Brahmans are to be known—the one indicated by the word 'Brahman' and that which is beyond words.
