एतैर्म्मनुभिः स्वाहान्तैः पूज्य तिलहोमादिनार्थभाक् । काद्यैर्वा वीजसंयुक्तैराद्यैश्च नमोऽन्तकैः ।। ३४८.
With these mantras ending in 'svāhā', one should honor the offerings of sesame and other oblations; or with those beginning with 'kā', joined with seed syllables, and those beginning with 'namas'.
मन्त्राः पृथक् पृथग्वा स्युर्द्विरेफद्विर्मुखाक्षिणः । कात्यायनं स्कन्द आह यत्तद्व्याकरणं वदे ।। ३४८.
The mantras are each distinct, some with double 'r' or double 'v', some with initial or final 'k'; what Kātyāyana and Skanda have spoken, that grammatical explanation I shall declare.
स्कन्द उवाच वक्ष्ये व्याकरणं सारं सिद्धशब्दस्वरूपकम् । कात्यायनविबोधाय बालानां बोधनाय च ।। ३४९.
Skanda said: I shall explain the essence of grammar, the nature of perfected words, for the understanding of Kātyāyana and for the instruction of the young.
स्कन्द उवाच वक्ष्ये सन्धिसिद्धरूपं स्वरसन्धिमथादितः । दण्डाग्रं सागता दधीदं नदीहते मधूदकं ।। ३५०.
Skanda said: I shall explain the nature of sandhi, beginning with the union of vowels; 'daṇḍāgra', 'sāgata', 'dadhīdaṃ', 'nadīhate', 'madhūdakaṃ'.
पितॄषभः लॄकारश्च तवेदं सकलोदकं । अर्द्धर्च्चोऽयं तवल्कारः सैषा सैन्द्री तवौदनम् ।। ३५०.
'Pitṛṣabha', the letter 'lṛ', and this, all water is yours; this is half a verse, 'tavalkāra', this is 'saindrī', your food.
शट्टौघोऽभवदित्येवं व्यसुधीर्वस्वलङ्कृतं । पित्रर्थोपवनं दात्री नायको लावको नयः ।। ३५०.
'Śaṭṭaugha' has arisen thus, 'vyasudhīr', 'vasvalaṅkṛtaṃ'; for the sake of the ancestors, 'upavanaṃ', 'dātrī', 'nāyaka', 'lāvaka', 'nayaḥ'.
तइह तयिहेत्यादि तेऽत्र योत्र जलेऽकजं । प्रकृतिर्नो अहो एहि अ अवेहि इ इन्द्रकं ।। ३५०.
'Taiha', 'tayihe', and so on; 'te' here, 'yotra', 'jale', 'akajaṃ'; 'prakṛtir', 'no', 'aho', 'ehi', 'a', 'avehi', 'i', 'indrakaṃ'.
उ उत्तिष्ठ कवी एतौ वायू एतौ वने इमे । अमी एते यज्ञभूते एहि देव इमन्नय ।। ३५०.
'U', arise, poets; 'etau', winds; 'etau', in the forest, these; these are sacrificial beings; come, god, bring this here.
वक्ष्ये सन्धि व्यञ्जानानां वाग्यतोऽजेकमातृकः । षडेते तदिमे वादिवाङ्नीतिः षण्मुखादिकम् ।। ३५०.
I shall explain the sandhi of consonants, the origin of speech from the single mother; these six, and those, the rules of speech, beginning from Ṣaṇmukha.
वाङ्मनसं वाग्भावादिर्वाक् श्लक्ष्णं तच्छरीरकं । तल्लुनाति तच्चरेच्च क्रुङ्ङास्ते सुगण्णिह ।। ३५०.
Speech and mind, the origin of speech, speech is gentle, its embodiment; it cuts, it moves, 'kruṅṅāste', 'sugaṇṇiha'.
भवांश्चरन् भवांश्छात्रो भवांष्टीका भवांष्ठकः । भवांस्तीर्थं भवांस्थेयात् भवांल्लेखा भवाञ्जयः ।। ३५०.
'Bhavāṃścaran', 'bhavāṃśchātro', 'bhavāṃṣṭīkā', 'bhavāṃṣṭhakaḥ'; 'bhavāṃstīrthaṃ', 'bhavāṃstheyāt', 'bhavāṃllekhā', 'bhavāñjayaḥ'.
भवाञ्छेते भवाञ्च्शेते भवाञ्शेते भवाण्डीनः । त्वम्भर्त्ता त्वङ्करोष्यादिः सन्धिर्ज्ञयो विसर्गजः ।। ३५०.
'Bhavāñchete', 'bhavāñcśete', 'bhavāñśete', 'bhavāṇḍīnaḥ'; you are the protector, you are the doer, and so on; sandhi is known, arising from visarga.
कश्छिन्द्यात् कश्चरेत् कष्टः कष्ठः कस्थश्च कश्चलेत् । क खनेत् क करोति स्म क " पठेत् " फलेत वा ।। ३५०.
One may cut, one may act, 'kaṣṭaḥ', 'kaṣṭhaḥ', 'kasthaśca', one may move; one may dig, one may do, one may recite, or bear fruit.
कश्श्वशुरः कः श्वशुरः कस्सावरः कः सावरः । कः फलेत कः शयिता कोऽत्र योधः क उत्तमः ।। ३५०.
'Kaśśvaśuraḥ', 'kaḥ śvaśuraḥ', 'kassāvaraḥ', 'kaḥ sāvaraḥ'; who bears fruit, who lies down, who is the warrior here, who is the best.
देवा एते भो इह सोदरा यान्ति भगो व्रज । सुपूः सुदूरात्रिरत्र वायुर्याति पुनर्न हि ।। ३५०.
These are the gods, O friend, here brothers go, fortune goes, proceed; 'supūḥ', 'sudūrātrir', here, the wind goes, but not again.
पुनरेति स यातीह एष याति क ईश्वरः । ज्योतीरूपं तवच्छत्रं म्लेच्छधीश्छिद्रमच्छिदत् ।। ३५०.
He returns again, he goes here, this one goes, who is the lord; your umbrella is of the form of light, the foreign ruler pierced the hole.
स्कन्द उवाच विभक्तिसिद्धरूपञ्च कात्यायन वदामि ते । द्वे विभक्ती सुप्तिङश्च सुपः सप्त विभक्तयः ।। ३५१.
Skanda said: I shall tell you, Kātyāyana, the nature of grammatical cases; there are two types of cases, 'suptiṅ', and 'sup', seven cases.
सु औजसिति प्रथमा अमौट्शसो द्वितीया । टाभ्यां बिसिति तृतीया ङभ्यांभ्यसश्चतुर्थ्यपि ।। ३५१.
'Su', 'aujas', 'iti' are the first case; 'amauṭśaso' is the second; 'ṭābhyāṃ', 'bisiti' is the third; 'ṅabhyāṃ', 'bhyasa' is also the fourth.
ङसिभ्यांभ्यसः पञ्चमी स्यात्ङसोसामिति षष्ठ्यपि । ङिओस्तुबिति सप्तमी स्यात् स्युः प्रातिपदिकात्पराः ।। ३५१.
The ablative is formed with the suffixes ṅasi and bhyas; the genitive also with ṅas and ām; the locative with ṅi and su. These occur after a nominal base.
द्विविधं प्रातिपदिकं ह्यजन्तञ्च हलन्तकं । प्रत्येकं त्रिविधं तत् स्यात् पुमांस्त्री च नपुंसकं ।। ३५१.
A nominal base is of two kinds: ending in a vowel or in a consonant. Each of these is threefold: masculine, feminine, and neuter.
दर्श्यन्ते नायकास्तेषामनुक्तानाञ्च वीर्य्यतः । वृक्षः सर्व्वोऽथ पूर्व्वश्च प्रथमश्च द्वितीयकः ।। ३५१.
The principal examples of these, including those whose forms are not stated, are shown by their strength: vṛkṣaḥ (tree), sarva (all), pūrva (former), prathama (first), and dvitīyaka (second).
तृतीयः खण्डपा वह्निः सखापतिरहर्पतिः । पटुर्नीर्ग्रामणीन्द्रश्च खलबूर्म्मित्रभूः स्वभूः ।। ३५१.
The third is khaṇḍapā, vahni (fire), sakhā (friend), patir (lord), aharpati (lord of the day), paṭu (clever), nīr (water), grāmaṇī (village chief), indra, khalabūr, mitrabhū, and svabhū.
सुश्रीः सुधीः पिता भ्राता ना कर्त्ता क्रोष्टुनप्तृकौ । सुरा रा गौस्तथा द्यौर्ग्लौः स्वरान्ताः पुंसि नायकाः ।। ३५१.
Suśrī (of good fortune), sudhī (wise), pitā (father), bhrātā (brother), na (not), kartā (doer), kroṣṭu (jackal), naptṛ (grandson), surā (god), rā, gau (cow), dyau (sky), glauḥ, svarānta (ending in svara) are masculine examples.
सुवाक् त्वक् पृषत् सम्राट् जन्मभाक् च अवेदपि । आपो मरुद्भवन् दीव्यन् भवांश्च मघवान् पिवन् ।। ३५१.
Suvāk (eloquent), tvak (skin), pṛṣat (spotted), samrāṭ (emperor), janmabhāk (born), aved (ignorant), āpaḥ (waters), marut (wind), bhavan (becoming), dīvyān (divine), bhavān (lord), maghavān (generous), pivan (drinker).
भगवानघवानर्व्वान्वह्निमत् सर्व्ववित्सुपृत् । सुसोमा कुण्डी राजा च श्वा युवा मघवा तथा ।। ३५१.
Bhagavān (blessed), aghavān (sinful), arvān (near), vahnimat (possessed of fire), sarvavit (all-knowing), supṛt (well-nourished), susomā (having good soma), kuṇḍī (pot), rājā (king), śvā (dog), yuvā (youth), and maghavā (generous).
पूषा सुकर्म्मा यज्वा च सुवर्म्मा च सुधर्म्मणा । अर्य्यमा वृत्रहा पन्थाः सुककुदादिपञ्च च ।। ३५१.
Pūṣā (nourisher), sukarmā (of good deeds), yajvā (sacrificer), suvarmā (well-armed), sudharmāṇā (of good law), aryamā, vṛtrahā (slayer of Vṛtra), panthāḥ (path), and the five beginning with sukakuda.
प्रशान् सुतांश्च पञ्चाद्याः सुगीः सुराः सुपूरपि । चन्द्रमाः सुवचाः श्रेयान् विद्वांश्चोशनसा सह ।। ३५१.
Praśān (pacifier), sutā (son), and the first five, sugī (well-sung), surā (goddess), supūra (well-filled), candramāḥ (moon), suvacāḥ (well-spoken), śreyān (better), vidvān (wise), together with Uśanas.
पेचिवान् गौरवानड्वान् गोधुङ्मित्रद्रुहौ श्वलिट् । स्त्रियां जाया जरा बाला एड़का सहो वृद्धया ।। ३५१.
Pecivān (having wings), gauravān (dignified), aḍvān (traveler), godhuṅ (milker of cows), mitradruha (betrayer of friends), śvaliṭ (dog-like); in the feminine: jāyā (wife), jarā (old age), bālā (girl), er̤akā (goat), saho (powerful), vṛddhayā (old woman).
क्षात्रिया बहुराजा च बहुदा माऽथ बालिका । माया कौमुदगन्धा च सर्व्वा पूर्व्वा सहान्यया ।। ३५१.
Kṣātriyā (female warrior), bahurājā (having many kings), bahudā (giving much), mā (mother), bālikā (girl), māyā (illusion), kaumudagandhā (fragrant as moonlight), all these are feminine along with others.
द्वितीया च तृतीया च बुद्धिः स्त्रो श्रोर्न्नदी सुधीः । भवन्ती चैव दीव्यन्ती भाती भान्ती च यान्त्यपि ।। ३५१.
The second and third are buddhi (intellect), stro, śroṇī (hip), nadī (river), sudhī (wise woman), bhavantī (becoming), dīvyantī (shining), bhātī (bright), bhāntī (radiant), and yānti (going).
