Nārada said: The adept should accomplish the mantra in the abode of the deity and the like; having worshipped Hari and Īśvara on a pure ground or in a house, in a maṇḍala.
On a field made square, one should draw the maṇḍala and other figures; in the compartments for mercury and gold, one should draw auspicious marks on all sides.
With thirty-six compartments, the lotus seat should be drawn in rows outside; from two, there are passageways, and from two, doors in the directions.
Having rotated the line, one should mark the lotus field in front; having rotated half the lotus, one should mark the twelfth part outside.
Dividing, one should rotate the rest, making four fields circular; first is the central field, second is for the filaments.
The third is for the joints of the petals, the fourth for the tips of the petals; then, stretching the lines to the corners, to the middle of the directions at the end.
Placing at the tip of the filaments, one should measure the joints of the petals; then, having dropped the lines there, one should draw eight leaves.
The measure from the end of the petal joint should be placed in the middle; with that, one should rotate the tip of the petal, and then its extremity thereafter.
The space in between, and at its side, proceeding outward; in the filaments, one should draw two by two in the middle of the petals, and then again.
This general form of the lotus is said to have twelve petals; with half the measure of the central part, one should rotate it in order, beginning from the east.
At its side, by means of rotation, there are six coils; thus, there are twelve fish, and with them, a double-petaled lotus.
For the accomplishment of the five-leaved form, there are other double lines; in the four directions, the limbs are drawn accordingly.
At three corners, place the elements for the feet; at the other two, place pairs. The limbs are to be marked in the four directions.
Then, erase two rows in the directions for the sake of the street; in each of the four directions, make four doorways.
Beside the doorways, the wise should make eight adornments; and on each side of these, the same number of secondary adornments are prescribed.
Near the secondary adornments, the corners are to be marked; then, in the four directions, consider two and two with the central compartments.
On the outside, mark four on each side; for the sake of adornment, erase three and three on each side of the petal.
In the same way, in reverse order, make the secondary adornments; for the inner and outer parts of the corner, consider three and three, divided in two ways.
Thus, there will be sixteen compartments, and the circle is to be completed; in the section of twelve, the lotus has thirty-six petals, and the street is to be marked.
One row, as before, is for the outer and inner adornment of the doorways; the circle should be measured as twelve finger-breadths, or one hand in diameter.
If two hands, then the measure is one hand; increase by the doorway as you proceed. The altar should be square, with a wheel and a lotus design.
Half the lotus is said to be made with nine; the navel is considered with three. Make eight doorways, and the rim with four finger-breadths.
Dividing the field into three, then mark within two; for the accomplishment of the inner sound, draw the lines by striking them.
Draw shapes like blue lotus petals, or like the citron fruit; or else, draw elongated lotus leaves as desired.
After revolving the outer rim, which is placed between the lower joints, revolve the root of the petal, which is set in the middle of the joint.
Standing in the middle of the petal, revolve the central stick evenly; thus, the other petals, equal and citron-shaped, are properly accomplished.
Dividing the field into seven, make it evenly with fourteen divisions; when divided in two, there are one hundred, and indeed ninety-six more.
With those four, draw the auspicious mark in the center of the compartments; distribute them around for the streets, and likewise mark them in the directions.
Again, for the streets, smooth the lotuses all around; in the middle compartments, erase two in each direction for the neck.
Outside, erase four, then three and three; at the side of the neck, outside, one adornment is prescribed.
