उपस्थो भूर्जलन्तेजो वायुराकाशमेव च। पुरुषं व्यापकं न्यस्य अङ्गुष्ठादौ दश न्यसेत्
The organ of generation, earth, water, fire, air, and space as well; having installed the all-pervading Person, one should place the ten (principles) beginning with the thumb.
शेषान् हस्ततले न्यस्य शिरस्यथ ललाटके। मुखहृन्नाभिगुह्योरुजान्वङ्घ्रौ करणोदूतौ
The rest should be placed on the palms, on the head, and on the forehead; on the mouth, heart, navel, groin, thighs, shanks, feet, and the two messengers of the senses.
पादे जान्वोरुपस्थे च हृदये मूद्र्ध्नि च क्रमात्। परश्च पुरुषात्मादौ षड्विंशे पूर्ववत्परम्
On the feet, knees, thighs, heart, and head, in order; and the Supreme, beginning with the Self of the Person, and the twenty-sixth, as before, the highest.
सञ्चिन्त्य मण्डलैके तु प्रकृतिं पूजयेद्बुधः। पूर्वयाम्याप्यसौम्येषु हृदयादीनि पूजयेत्
Having meditated on the single circle, the wise should worship Prakriti; in the east, south, west, and north, one should worship the heart and other (parts).
अस्त्रमग्न्यादिकोणेषु वैनतेयादि पूर्ववत्। दिक्पालांश्च विधिस्त्वन्यः त्रिव्यूहेग्निश्च मध्यतः
The missile (astra) in the southeast and other corners, Garuda and others as before; the guardians of the directions in another manner, and the triple array of fire in the center.
पूर्वादिदिग्बलावासोराज्यादिभिरलङ्कृतः। कर्णिकायां नाभसश्च मानसः कर्णिकास्थितः
Adorned with clarified butter and so on, in the abodes of the lords of the directions beginning with the east; in the pericarp and in the sky, the mental (deity) is established in the pericarp.
विश्वरूपं सर्वस्थित्यै यजेद्राज्यजयाय च। सर्वव्यूहैः समायुक्तमङ्गैरपि च पञ्चभिः
One should worship the Universal Form for the maintenance of all, and for the victory of the clarified butter sacrifice; united with all arrays and also with the five limbs.
गरुडद्यैस्तथेन्द्राद्यैः सर्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात्। विष्वक्सेनं यजेन्नाम्ना वै बीजं व्योमसंस्थितम्
With Garuda and others, and likewise with Indra and others, one attains all desires; one should worship Vishvaksena by name, the seed established in the sky.
नारद उवाच मुद्राणां लक्षणं वक्ष्ये सान्निध्यादिप्रकारकम्। अञ्चलिः प्रथमा मुद्रा वन्दनी हृदयानुगा
Narada said: I shall describe the characteristics of the mudras, their modes such as presence and so on; the first mudra is Anjali, to be offered with the heart.
ऊद्धर्वाङ्गुष्ठो वाममुष्टिर्द्दक्षिणाङ्गुष्ठबन्धनम्। सव्यस्य तस्य चाङ्गुष्ठो यस्य चोद्धर्वे प्रकीर्त्तितः
With the thumbs raised, the left fist and the binding of the right thumb; the thumb of the left hand is said to be raised in this way.
तिस्नः साधरणा व्यूहे अथासाधारणा इमाः। कनिष्ठादिविमोकेन अष्टौ मुद्रा यथाक्रमम्
Three are common in the array, and these are the uncommon ones; by releasing from the little finger onward, there are eight mudras in sequence.
अष्टानां पूर्व्वबीजानां क्रमशस्त्ववधारयेत्। अङ्गुष्ठेन कनिष्ठान्तं नामयित्वाङ्गुलित्रयम्
One should carefully observe the order of the eight primary seeds; bending three fingers from the thumb to the little finger.
ऊद्ध्र्वं कृत्वा सम्मुखञ्च थीजाय नवमाय वै। वामहस्तमथोत्तानं कृत्वार्द्धं नामयेच्छनैः
Having raised (the fingers) upward and facing forward for the ninth; then, turning the left hand upward, one should gently bend it halfway.
वराहस्य स्मृता मुद्रा अङ्गानाञ्च क्रमादिमाः। एकैकां मोचयेद् बद्ध्वा वाममुष्टौ तथाङ्गुलीम्
The mudra of Varaha is remembered, and these are the initial sequences of the limbs; having bound each one, one should release the finger in the left fist.
आकुञ्चयेत् पूर्वमुद्रां दक्षिणेत्येवमेव च। ऊद्र्ध्वाङ्गुष्ठो वाममुष्टिर्मुद्रासिद्धिस्ततो भवेत्
First, one should contract the previous mudrā with the right hand in this manner; with the thumb raised and the left fist, thus the accomplishment of the mudrā is attained.
नारद उवाच अभिषेकं प्रवक्ष्यामि यथाचार्य्यस्तु पुत्रकः। सिद्धिबाक् साधको येन रोगी रोगाद्विमुच्यते
Nārada said: I shall explain the rite of consecration, just as the teacher instructs, O son; by which the adept gains success and the sick are freed from illness.
राज्यं राजा सुतं स्त्रीञ्च प्राप्नुयान्मलनाशनम्। मूर्त्तिकुम्भान् सुरत्नाढ्यः मध्यपूर्वादितो न्यसेत्
By this, a king attains a kingdom, a son, and women, and the destruction of impurity; one should place earthen pots filled with jewels in the middle, east, and other directions.
सहस्त्रावर्त्तितान् कुर्य्यादथवा शतवर्त्तितान्। मण्डपे मण्डले विष्णुं प्राच्यैशान्याञ्च पीठके
One should perform a thousand or a hundred circumambulations; in the pavilion or on the maṇḍala, one should place Viṣṇu on a seat facing east and northeast.
निवेश्य शकलीकृत्य पुत्रकं शाधकादिकम्। अभिषेकं समभ्यर्च्च्य कुर्य्याद्गीतादिपूर्वकम्
Having placed and arranged the son, the adept, and others, one should properly perform the consecration, preceded by singing and other rites.
दद्याच्च योगपीठादींस्त्वनुग्राह्यास्त्वया नराः। गुरुस्च समायान् ब्रूयाद्गुप्तः शिष्योथ सर्वभाक्
One should give the yogapīṭha and other offerings; the people to be favored by you; and the guru, having assembled, should secretly instruct the disciple, who partakes of all.
नारद उवाच साधकः साधयेन्मन्त्रं देवतायतनादिके। शुद्धभूमौ गृहे प्रार्च्च्य मण्डले हरिमीश्वरम्
Nārada said: The adept should accomplish the mantra in the abode of the deity and the like; having worshipped Hari and Īśvara on a pure ground or in a house, in a maṇḍala.
चतुरस्त्रीकृते क्षेत्रे मण्डलादीनि वै लिखेत्। रसवाणाक्षिकोष्ठेषु सर्व्वतोबद्रमालिखेत्
On a field made square, one should draw the maṇḍala and other figures; in the compartments for mercury and gold, one should draw auspicious marks on all sides.
षट्त्रिंशत्कोष्ठकैः पद्मं पीठं पङ्क्त्या बहिर्भवेत्। द्वाभ्यान्तु वीथिका तस्माद् द्वाभ्यां द्वाराणि दिक्षु च
With thirty-six compartments, the lotus seat should be drawn in rows outside; from two, there are passageways, and from two, doors in the directions.
वर्त्तु लं भ्रामयित्वा तु पद्मक्षेत्रं पुरोदितम्। पद्मार्द्धे भ्रामयित्वा तु भागं द्वादशमं बहिः
Having rotated the line, one should mark the lotus field in front; having rotated half the lotus, one should mark the twelfth part outside.
विभज्य भ्रामयेच्छेषं चतुः क्षेत्रन्तु वर्त्तुलम्। प्रथमं कर्णिकाक्षेत्रं केशराणां द्वितीयकम्
Dividing, one should rotate the rest, making four fields circular; first is the central field, second is for the filaments.
तृतीयं दलसन्धीनां दलाग्राणां चतुर्थकम्। प्रसार्य कोणसूत्राणि कोणदिङ्मध्यमन्ततः
The third is for the joints of the petals, the fourth for the tips of the petals; then, stretching the lines to the corners, to the middle of the directions at the end.
निधाय केशराग्रे तु दलसन्धींस्तुलाञ्छयेत्। पातयित्वाथ सूत्राणि तत्र पत्राष्टकं लिखेन
Placing at the tip of the filaments, one should measure the joints of the petals; then, having dropped the lines there, one should draw eight leaves.
दलस्न्ध्यन्तशलन्तु मानं मध्ये निधाय तु। दलाग्रं भ्रामयेत्तेन तदग्रं तदनन्तरम्
The measure from the end of the petal joint should be placed in the middle; with that, one should rotate the tip of the petal, and then its extremity thereafter.
तदन्तरालं तत्पार्श्वे कृत्वा बाह्यक्रमेण च। केशरे तु लिखेद्द्वौ द्वौ दलमध्ये ततः पुनः
The space in between, and at its side, proceeding outward; in the filaments, one should draw two by two in the middle of the petals, and then again.
पद्मलक्षमैतत् सामान्यं द्विषट्कदलमुच्यते। कर्णिकार्द्धेन मानेन प्राकसंस्थं भ्रामयेत् क्रमात्
This general form of the lotus is said to have twelve petals; with half the measure of the central part, one should rotate it in order, beginning from the east.
