गवान्तु लवणन्देयं ब्राह्मणानाञ्च दक्षिणा । नैमित्तिके माकरादौ यजेद्विष्णुं सह श्रिया ।। २९२.
Cows should be given salt and gifts to Brahmins as offerings; in special rituals such as Mākarā, one should worship Viṣṇu together with Śrī.
स्थणअडिलेव्जे मध्यगते कदिक्षु केशरगान् सुरान् । सुभद्राजो रविः पूज्यो बहुरूपो बलिर्वहिः ।। २९२.
In the middle of the stable, at the cardinal points, the gods associated with saffron should be honored; the auspicious king, the Sun, should be worshipped, who is manifold and mighty outside.
खं विश्वरूपा सिद्धिस्च ऋद्धिः शान्तिश्च रोहिणी । दिग्धेनवो हि पूर्वाद्याः कृशरैश्चन्द्र ईश्वरः ।। २९२.
The sky, the all-formed, accomplishment, prosperity, peace, and Rohiṇī; the eastern and other quarters are cows, and the moon, the lord, is lean.
दिक्पालाः पद्मपत्रेषु कुम्भेष्वग्नौ च होमयेत् । क्षीरवृक्षस्य समिधः सर्षपाक्षततण्डुलान् ।। २९२.
The guardians of the directions should be offered oblations on lotus leaves, in pots, and in the fire; with kindling from the milk-tree, mustard seeds, uncooked rice, and grains.
शतं शतं सुवर्णञ्च कांस्यादिकं द्विजे ददेत् । गावः पूज्या विमोक्तव्याः शान्त्यै क्षीरादिसंयुताः ।। २९२.
One should give a hundred, a hundred pieces of gold and bronze and the like to Brahmins; cows should be honored and released for peace, along with milk and similar offerings.
शालिहोत्रः सुश्रुताय हयायुर्वेदमुक्तवान् । पालकाप्योऽङ्गराजाय गजायुर्वेदमब्रवीत् ।। २९२.
Śālihotra taught the science of horse medicine to Suśruta; Pālakāpya taught the science of elephant medicine to the king of Aṅga.
अग्निरुवाच नागादयोऽथ भावादिदशस्थानानि कर्म्म च । सूतकं दष्टचेष्टेति सप्तलक्षणमुच्यते ।। २९४.
Agni said: The nāgas and others, the omens, the ten stations, the rites, impurity, and the symptoms of bites—these are said to be the seven characteristics.
शेषवासुकितक्षाख्याः कर्कटोऽब्जो महाम्बुजः । शङ्खपालश्च कुलिक इत्याष्टौ नागवर्य्यकाः ।। २९४.
Śeṣa, Vāsuki, Takṣaka, Karkaṭa, Abja, Mahāmbuja, Śaṅkhapāla, and Kulika—these are the eight chief nāgas.
दशाष्टपञ्चत्रिगुणशतमूर्द्धान्वितौ क्रमात् । विप्रौ नृपो विशौ शूद्रौ द्वौ द्वौ नागेषु कीर्त्तितौ ।। २९४.
Ten, eight, five, three, and one hundred, each with a head in succession: the Brahmin, the king, the commoner, the Shudra—two each are mentioned among the serpents.
तदन्वयाः पञ्चशतं तेभ्यो जाता असंख्यकाः । फणिमण्डलिराजीलवातपित्तकफात्मकाः ।। २९४.
Their descendants number five hundred, born from them, countless in total; they are of the nature of the serpent-circle, striped, and governed by wind, bile, and phlegm.
व्यन्तरा दोषमिश्रास्ते सर्पा दर्व्वीकराः समृताः । रथाङ्गलाङ्गलच्छत्रस्वस्तिकाङ्कुशधारिणः ।। २९४.
Intermediate serpents, mixed with faults, are called Darvikara; they bear the marks of chariot wheels, arms, umbrellas, swastikas, and goads.
गोनसा मन्दगा दीर्घा मण्डलैर्विविधैस्चिताः । राजिलाश्चित्रिताः स्निग्धास्तिर्य्यगूद्र्ध्वञ्च वाजिभिः ।। २९४.
With cow-like noses, slow-moving, long-bodied, adorned with various circles; striped, glossy, moving horizontally and vertically with horses.
व्यन्तरा मिश्रचिह्नाश्च भूवर्षाग्नेयवायवः । चतुर्विधास्ते षड्विंशभेदाः षोड़श गोनसाः ।। २९४.
Intermediate serpents with mixed signs, belonging to earth, rain, fire, and wind; these are fourfold, with twenty-six divisions, and sixteen with cow-like noses.
त्रयोदश च राजीला व्यन्तरा एकविशतिः । येऽनुक्तकाले जायन्ते सर्पास्ते व्यन्तराः स्मृताः ।। २९४.
Thirteen are striped, and among the intermediates, twenty-one; those born at unmentioned times are considered intermediate serpents.
आषाढादित्रिमासैः स्याद् गर्भो माषटतुष्टये । अण्डकानां शते द्वे च तत्वारिंशत् प्रसूयते ।। २९४.
With three months from Ashadha onward, the embryo develops in six pulses; from two hundred eggs, forty are produced.
सर्पा ग्रसन्ति सूतौघान् विना स्त्रीपुन्नपुंसकान् । उन्मीलतेऽक्षि सप्ताहात् कृष्णो मासाद्भवेद्वहिः ।। २९४.
Serpents devour the offspring, except for female, male, and neuter; the eye opens in seven days, and after a month, the snake emerges.
द्वादशाहात् सुबोधः स्यात् दन्ताः स्युः सूर्य्यदर्शनात् । द्वात्रिंशद्दिनविंशत्या चतुस्रस्तेषु दंष्ट्रिकाः ।। २९४.
After twelve days, it becomes fully aware; teeth appear at the sight of the sun; in thirty-two or nineteen days, four among them become fanged.
कराली मकरी कालरात्री च यमदूतिका । एतास्तीः सविषा दंष्ट्रा वामदक्षिणपार्श्वगाः ।। २९४.
Karali, Makari, Kalaratri, and Yamadutika—these fierce ones, with poisonous fangs, are found on the left and right sides.
षण्मासान्मुच्यते कृत्तिं जीवेत्षष्टिसमाद्वयं । नागाः सूर्य्यादिवारेशाः सप्त उक्ता दिवा निशि ।। २९४.
After six months, it sheds its skin and lives for sixty-two years; the serpents of the sun and other days are said to be seven, by day and night.
स्वेषां षट् प्रतिवारेषु कुलिकः सर्व्वसन्धिषु । शङ्खेन वा महाव्जेन सह तस्योदयोऽथवा ।। २९४.
Six of their own, on each day of the week, the Kulika at all joints; with a conch or a great serpent, its rise occurs, or otherwise.
द्वयोर्व्वा नाड़िकामन्त्रमन्त्रकं कुलिकोदयः । दुष्टः स कालः सर्व्वत्र सर्पदंशे विशेषतः ।। २९४.
Or in two, the mantra of the coconut or the mantra, the rise of Kulika; that time is inauspicious everywhere, especially in snake bites.
कृत्तिका भरणी स्वाती मूलं पूर्व्वत्रयाश्विनी । विशाखार्द्रा मघाश्लेषा श्रवणरोहिणो ।। २९४.
Krittika, Bharani, Swati, Mula, the first three, Ashwini; Vishakha, Ardra, Magha, Shlesha, Shravan, Rohini.
हस्ता मन्दकुजौ वारौ पञ्चमी चाष्टमी तिथिः । षष्ठी रिक्ता शिवा निन्द्या पञ्चमी च चतुर्द्दशी ।। २९४.
Hasta, Manda, Kuja, Vara, the fifth and eighth lunar days; the sixth, empty, auspicious, blameworthy, fifth and fourteenth.
सन्ध्याचतुष्टयं दुष्टं दग्धयोगाश्च राशयः । एकद्विबहवो दंशा दष्टविद्धञ्च खण्डितम् ।। २९४.
The four twilights are inauspicious, as are the burnt yogas and signs; single, double, or multiple bites, bitten and wounded, and fractured.
अदंशमवगुप्तं स्याद्दंशमेवं चतुर्विधम् । त्रयो द्व्येकक्षता दंशा वेदना रुधिरोल्वणा ।। २९४.
Unbitten and protected, bitten in four ways; three, two, or one wounded bites, with pain and profuse bleeding.
नक्तन्त्वेकाङ्घ्रिकूर्म्माबा दंशाश्च यमचोदिताः । दीहीपिपीलिकास्पर्शी कण्ठशोथरुजान्वितः ।। २९४.
At night, one-legged, turtle-bodied bites, and those prompted by Yama; touched by ants, with swelling and pain in the throat.
सतोदो ग्रन्थितो दंशः सविषो न्यस्तनिर्व्विषः । देवालये शून्यगृहे वल्मीकोद्यानकोटरे ।। २९४.
A bite that is moist or encrusted, poisonous or non-poisonous, found in a temple, an empty house, an anthill, or the hollow of a garden tree.
रथ्यासन्धौ श्मशाने च नद्याञ्च सिन्धुसङ्गमे । द्वीपे चतुष्पथे सौधे गृहेऽब्जे पर्व्वताग्रतः ।। २९४.
At a crossroads, on a highway, in a cremation ground, at the confluence of rivers, on an island, at a four-way junction, in a mansion, in a house, in a lotus, or on a mountain peak.
विलद्वारे जीर्णकूपे जीर्णवेश्मनि कुड्यके । शिग्रुश्लेष्मातकाक्षेषु जम्बू डुम्बरणेषु च ।। २९४.
At a swinging door, in a ruined well, in a dilapidated dwelling, on a wall, among moringa, śleṣmātaka, and āmalaka trees, and also among jambu and fig trees.
वटे च जीर्णप्राकारे खास्यहृत्कक्षजत्रुणि । तालौ शङ्खे गले मूद्र्ध्नि चिवुके नाभिपादयोः ।। २९४.
At a banyan tree, on a broken rampart, in the mouth, heart, armpit, collarbone, on the palm, conch, throat, head, cheek, navel, or feet.
