रक्तपित्तहरः पानादश्वकर्णैस्तथैव च । सप्तमे सप्तमे देयमश्वानां लवणं दिने ।। २८९.
Drinking aśvakarṇa likewise removes bleeding and bile disorders; every seventh day, horses should be given salt.
तथा भुक्तवतान्देया अतिपाने तु वारुणी । दीवनीयैः समधुरैर्मृद्वीकाशर्करायुतैः ।। २८९.
For those who have eaten, give vāruṇī in cases of excessive drinking; with mild, sweet ingredients like raisins and sugar.
सपिप्पलीकैः शरदि प्रतिपानं सपद्मकैः । विड़ङ्गापिप्पलीधान्यशताह्वालोध्रसैनधवैः ।। २८९.
With long pepper in autumn, administer with lotus seeds; with viḍaṅga, long pepper, coriander, śatāhvā, lodhra, and saindhava salt.
सचित्रकैस्तुरङ्गाणं प्रतिपानं हिमागमे । लोध्रपिरियङ्गुकामुस्तापिप्पलीविश्वभेषजै ।। २८९.
With citraka, give to horses at the onset of winter; with lodhra, priyāṅgu, kāmustā, long pepper, and universal medicines.
सक्षौद्रैः प्रतिपानं स्याद्वसन्ते कफनाशनम् । प्रियङ्गुपिप्पलीलोध्रयष्ट्याक्षैः समहौषधैः ।। २८९.
With honey, administer in spring to dispel phlegm; with priyāṅgu, long pepper, lodhra, and licorice, along with other herbs.
निदाघे सगुड़ा देया मदिरा प्रतिपानके । लोध्रकाष्ठं सलवणं पिप्पल्यो विश्वभेषजम् ।। २८९.
In summer, give wine with jaggery; lodhra wood, salt, and long pepper are universal medicines.
प्रावृड्भिन्नपुरीषाश्च पिवेयुर्वाजिनो घृतम् । पिवेयुर्वाजिनस्तैलं कफवाय्वधिकास्तु ये ।। २८९.
In the rainy season, horses with loosened bowels should drink ghee; those with excess phlegm and wind should drink oil.
प्रावृड्भिन्नपुरीषाश्च पिवेयुर्वाजिनो घृतम् । पिवेयुर्वाजिनस्तैलं कफवाय्वधिकास्तु ये ।। २८९.
In the rainy season, horses with loosened bowels should drink ghee; those with excess phlegm and wind should drink oil.
स्रेहव्यापद्भ्वो येषां कार्य्यं तेषां विरूक्षणम् । त्र्यहं यवागू रूक्षा स्याद् भोजनं तक्रसंयुतम् ।। २८९.
For those whose treatment requires unctuous substances, their regimen should be dry; for three days, their food should be coarse barley porridge mixed with buttermilk.
शरन्निदाघ्योः सर्पिस्तैलं शीतवसन्तयोः । वर्षासु शिशिरे चैव वस्तौ यमकमिष्यते ।। २८९.
Ghee and oil are prescribed in autumn and summer; in winter and spring, and during the rainy season, a double portion is recommended.
गुर्वभिष्यन्दिभक्तानि व्यायामं स्नानमातपम् । वायुवर्जञ्च वाहस्य स्नेहपीतस्य वर्जितम् ।। २८९.
Heavy, unctuous foods, exercise, bathing, and sun exposure, as well as wind, should be avoided for those who have consumed unctuous substances.
स्नानं पानं शकृत्क्रूष्ठमश्वानां सलिलागमे । अत्यर्थं दुर्द्दिने काले पानमेकं प्रशस्यते ।। २८९.
Bathing, drinking, and defecation for horses should be done when water is available; on excessively difficult days, only drinking is advised.
युक्तशीतातपे काले द्विःपानं स्नपनं सकृत् । ग्रीष्मे त्रिस्नानपानं स्याच्चिरं तस्यावगाहनम् ।। २८९.
When the weather is suitably cool and sunny, twice drinking and once bathing is proper; in summer, three times bathing and drinking is recommended, with prolonged immersion.
निस्तुषाणां प्रदातव्या यवानां चतुराढकी । चणकव्रीहिमौद्गानि कलायं वापि दापयेत् ।। २८९.
For those without husks, four āḍhakas of barley should be given; chickpeas, rice, mung beans, or black gram may also be provided.
अहोरात्रेण चार्द्धस्य यवसस्य तुला दश । अष्टौ शुष्कस्य दातव्याश्चतस्रोऽथ वुषस्य वा ।। २८९.
In a day and night, ten tulās of barley should be given for half; eight of dried barley, or four of husked barley, are to be provided.
दूर्वा पित्तं यवः कासं वुषश्च श्लेष्मसञ्चयम् । नाशयत्यर्जुनः श्वासं तथा मानो बलक्षयम् ।। २८९.
Dūrvā grass removes bile, barley cures cough, husked barley eliminates phlegm; arjuna dispels breathlessness, and likewise māna removes weakness.
वातिकाः पैत्तिकाश्चैव श्लेष्मजाः सान्निपातिकाः । न रोगाः पीडयिष्यन्ति दूर्वाहारन्तुरङ्गमम् ।। २८९.
Diseases caused by wind, bile, phlegm, and those of mixed origin will not afflict a horse that consumes dūrvā grass.
द्वौ रज्जुबन्धौ दुष्टानां पक्षयोरुभयोरपि । पश्चाद्धनुस्च कर्त्तर्व्यो दूरकीलव्यपाश्रयः ।। २८९.
For both wings of diseased horses, two ropes should be tied; afterwards, a bow should be made, serving as a support for distant stakes.
वासेयुस्त्वास्तृते स्थाने कृतधूपनभूमयः । यत्नोपन्यस्तयवसाः सप्रदीपाः सुरक्षिता ।। २८९.
They should be housed in a place prepared by grooms, with incense and proper bedding; barley should be carefully arranged, with lamps, and kept secure.
कृकवाक्कजकपयो धार्य्याश्चाश्वगृहे मृगाः ।। २८९.
Roosters, monkeys, and cows should be kept in the horse stable, along with deer.
शालिहोत्र उवाच अश्वशान्तिं प्रवक्ष्यामि वाजिरोगविमर्द्दनीं । नित्यां नैमित्तिकीं काम्यां त्रिविधां श्रृणु सुश्रुत ।। २९०.
Śālihotra said: I will explain the pacification of horses, which removes ailments; it is of three kinds—constant, occasional, and desired. Listen, O Suśruta.
शुभे दिने श्रीधरञ्च श्रियमुच्चैःश्रवाश्च तं । हयराजं समभ्यर्च्य सावित्रैर्जुहुयाद्घृतं ।। २९०.
On an auspicious day, after worshipping Śrīdhara and Uccaiḥśravas, the king of horses, one should offer ghee with Sāvitra hymns.
द्विजेभ्यो दक्षिणान्दद्यादश्ववृद्धिस्तथा भवेत् । अश्वयुक् शुक्लपक्षस्य पञ्चदश्याञ्च शान्तिकं ।। २९०.
One should give gifts to Brahmins, and thus the horse will prosper; on the fifteenth day of the bright fortnight, a pacification rite should be performed for the horse.
बहिः कुर्य्याद्विशेषेण नासत्यौ वरुणं यजेत् । समुल्लिख्य ततो देवीं शाखाभिः परिवारयेत् ।। २९०.
One should perform the ritual outside, especially worshipping Nāsatya and Varuṇa; after marking, the goddess should be surrounded with branches.
घटान्सर्व्वरसैः पूर्णान् दिक्षु दद्यात्सवस्त्रकान् । यवाज्यं जुहुयात् प्रार्च्य यजेदश्वांश्च साश्विनान् ।। २९०.
One should place pots filled with all kinds of liquids in the directions, covered with cloth; after offering barley and ghee, worship the horses and the Aśvins.
विप्रेभ्यो दक्षिणान्दद्यान्नैमित्तिकमतः श्रृणु । मकरादौ हयानाञ्च पद्मैर्विष्णुं श्रियं यजेत् ।। २९०.
One should give gifts to Brahmins; now listen to the occasional rite: at the beginning of Capricorn, worship Viṣṇu and Śrī with lotuses for the horses.
ब्रह्माणं शङ्करं सोममादित्यञ्च तथाश्विनौ । रेवन्तमुच्चैःश्रवसन्दिक्पालांश्च दलेष्वपि ।। २९०.
Brahmā, Śaṅkara, Soma, Āditya, the Aśvins, Revanta, Uccaiḥśravas, and the guardians of the directions are to be invoked in the divisions as well.
प्रत्येकं पूर्णंकुम्भैश्च वेद्यान्तत्सौम्यतः स्थले । तिलाक्षताज्यसिद्धार्थान् देवतानां शतं शतं ।। २९०.
For each, at the end of the altar, with full pots, and in a gentle manner on the ground, a hundred offerings each of sesame, rice, clarified butter, and mustard seeds are to be made to the deities.
उपोषितेन कर्त्तव्यं कर्म्म चाश्वरुजापहं ।। २९०.
This rite, which removes horse ailments, should be performed by one who has fasted.
शालिहोत्र उवाच गजशान्तिं प्रवक्ष्यामि गजरोगविमर्द्दनीम् । विष्णुं श्रियञ्च पञ्चम्यां नागमैरावतं यजेत् ।। २९१.
Śālihotra said: I will explain the pacification for elephants, which destroys elephant diseases; on the fifth day, one should worship Viṣṇu, Śrī, and the Nāga Airāvata.
