सृक्कण्याञ्च ललाटे च कर्णमूले निगालके । बाहुमूले गले श्रेष्ठा आवर्त्तास्त्वशुभाः परे ।। २८९.
Whorls at the hips, forehead, base of the ears, base of the arms, and neck are best; other whorls are inauspicious.
शुकेन्द्रगोपचन्द्राभा ये च वायससन्निभाः । सुवर्णवर्णाः स्निग्धाश्च प्रशस्यास्तु सदैव हि ।। २८९.
Those resembling the color of the moon, indragopa insect, and chandra, and those like a crow; golden-colored and glossy are always praised.
दीर्घग्रीवाक्षिकूटाश्च ह्रस्वकर्णाश्च शोभनाः । राज्ञान्तुरङ्गमा यत्र विजयं वर्जयेत्ततः ।। २८९.
Where horses have long necks and prominent eye sockets, and beautiful but short ears, the king should avoid sending his cavalry there, for victory will not be attained.
पालितस्तु हयो दन्तो शुभदो दुःखदोऽन्यथा । क्षियः पुत्रास्तु गन्धर्व्वा वाजिनो रत्नमुत्तमम् ।। २८९.
A well-trained and obedient horse brings good fortune, but otherwise brings suffering; sons are like Gandharvas, horses are the highest treasure.
अश्वमेधे तु तुरगः पवित्रत्वात्तु हूयते । वृषो निम्बवृहत्यौ च गुडूची च समाक्षिका ।। २८९.
In the Aśvamedha sacrifice, the horse is offered for its purity, along with a bull, nimba, vṛhatī, guḍūcī, and honey.
सिंहा गन्धकरी पिण्डी स्वेदश्च शिरसस्तथा । हिङ्गु पुष्करमूलञ्च नागरं साम्लवेतसं ।। २८९.
Lion, gandhakarī, piṇḍī, sweat from the head, asafoetida, puṣkaramūla, and dried ginger with sour vetasa are also included.
पिप्पलीसैन्धवयुतं शूलघ्नं चोष्णवारिणा । नागरातिविषा मुस्ता सानन्ता विल्वमालिका ।। २८९.
Pippalī and rock salt, a remedy for colic, with warm water; dried ginger, ativiṣā, mustā, sānantā, bael, and mālikā are to be used.
क्काथमेषां पिवेद्वाजी सर्व्वातीसारनाशनम् । प्रियङ्गुसारिवाभ्याञ्च युक्तमाजं श्रृतं पयः ।। २८९.
How should these be taken by the horse? They destroy all types of diarrhea. With priyangu and sārivā, mix goat's milk and cook it together.
पर्य्याप्तशर्करं पीत्वा श्रमाद्वाजी विमुच्यते । द्रोणिकायान्तु दातव्या तैलवस्तिस्तुरङ्गमे ।। २८९.
After drinking enough sugar, the horse is relieved from fatigue. Oil and fat should be given to the horse in a trough.
कोष्ठजा च शिरा वेध्या तेन तस्य सुखं भवेत् । दाड़िमं त्रिफला व्योषं गुड़ञ्च समभाविकम् ।। २८९.
A vein in the abdomen should be punctured, which brings relief. Pomegranate, triphalā, vyosha, and gur should be given in equal measure.
पिण्डमेतत् प्रदातव्यमश्वानां काशनाशनम् । प्रियङ्गुलोध्रमधुभिः पिवेद्वृषरसं हयः ।। २८९.
This bolus should be given to horses to cure cough. The horse should drink bull's juice mixed with priyangu, lodhra, and honey.
क्षीरं वा पञ्चकोलाद्यं काशनाद्धि प्रमुच्यते । प्रस्कन्धेषु च सर्व्वेषु श्रेय आदौ विशोधनम् ।। २८९.
Or milk prepared with pañcakola relieves cough. In all cases, purification should be done first for the best result.
अभ्यङ्गोद्वर्त्तनैः स्नेहं नस्यवर्त्तिक्रमः स्मृतः । ज्वरितानां तुरङ्गाणां पयसैव क्रियाक्रमः ।। २८९.
Oiling and massage with unguents, and nasal treatments are prescribed. For feverish horses, the procedure is to use only milk.
लोध्रकन्धरयोर्मूलं मातुलाङ्गाग्निनागराः । कुष्ठहिङ्गुवचारास्नालेपोयं शोथनाशनः ।। २८९.
The roots of lodhra and kandhara, mātulāṅga, dried ginger, kuṣṭha, asafoetida, vacā, and arsnā—this paste removes swelling.
मञ्जिष्ठा मधुकं द्राक्षावृहत्यौ रक्तचन्दनम् । त्रपुषीवीजमूलानि श्रृङ्गाटककशेरुकम् ।। २८९.
Mañjiṣṭhā, licorice, grapes, vṛhatī, red sandalwood, seeds and roots of trapuṣī, śṛṅgāṭaka, and kaśeruka are to be used.
अजापयः श्रृतमिदं सुशीतं शर्करान्वितं । पीत्वा नीरशनो वाजी रक्तमेहात् प्रमुच्यते ।। २८९.
Goat's milk, cooked and well-cooled, mixed with sugar—after drinking this, the horse is freed from blood in the urine.
मन्याहनुनिगालस्थशिराशोथो गलग्रहः । अभ्यङ्गः कटुतैलेन तत्र तेष्वेव शस्यते ।। २८९.
Swelling of the veins in the neck, jaw, and throat, and throat constriction—massage with pungent oil is recommended there.
गलग्रहगदी शोथः प्रायशो गलदेशके । प्रत्यक्पुष्पी तथा वह्निः सैन्धवं सौरसो रसः ।। २८९.
Throat constriction and swelling commonly occur in the throat region; pratyakpuṣpī, fire, rock salt, and sour juice are remedies.
कृष्णाहिङ्गुयुतैरेभिः कृत्वा नस्यं न सीदति । निशे ज्योतिष्मती पाठा कृष्णा कुष्ठं वचा मधु ।। २८९.
With these, mixed with black asafoetida, prepare a nasal remedy—then there will be no failure. At night, use jyotiṣmatī, pāṭhā, kṛṣṇā, kuṣṭha, vacā, and honey.
जिह्वास्तम्भे च लोपोऽयं गुड़मूत्रयुतो हितः । तिलैर्यष्ट्या रजन्या च निम्बपत्रैश्च योजिता ।। २८९.
For stiffness of the tongue, this mixture with gur and urine is beneficial; with sesame, licorice, turmeric, and neem leaves combined.
क्षौद्रेण शोधनी पिण्डी सर्पिषा व्रणरोपणी । अभिघातेन खञ्जन्ति ये ह्यश्वास्तीव्रवेदनाः ।। २८९.
A cleansing bolus is made with honey, and ghee is used to heal wounds; for horses that are lame from injury and suffer intense pain.
परिषेकक्रिया तेषां तैलेनाशु रुजापहा । दोषकोपाभिघाताभ्यां पक्कभिन्ने ब्रणक्रमः ।। २८९.
For them, pouring warm oil quickly relieves pain; when there is swelling from aggravated humors or trauma, and the wound is mature and open, this is the procedure.
अश्वत्थोडुम्बरप्लक्षमधूकवटकल्कनैः ।। २८९.
With pastes of aśvattha, udumbara, plakṣa, madhūka, and vaṭa trees.
प्रभूतसलिलः क्काथः सुखोष्णो व्रणशोधनः । शताह्वा नागरं रास्ना मञ्जिष्ठाकुष्ठसैन्धवैः ।। २८९.
A decoction with plenty of water, pleasantly warm, cleanses wounds; with śatāhvā, nāgara, rāsnā, mañjiṣṭhā, kuṣṭha, and saindhava salt.
देवदारुवचायुग्मरजनीरक्तवन्दनैः । तैलसिद्धं कषायेण गुडूच्याः पयसा सह ।। २८९.
With devadāru, vacā, yugma, turmeric, and red sandalwood; oil cooked with these and a decoction, together with guḍūcī milk.
म्रक्षणे वस्तिनश्ये च योज्यं सर्वत्र लिङ्गिने । रक्तस्रावो जलौकाभिर्न्नेत्रान्ते नेत्ररोगिणः ।। २८९.
For massaging, enemas, and all uses for stallions, this is applied everywhere; for bleeding, leeches are used at the corner of the eye in horses with eye disease.
खादिरोडुम्बराश्वत्थकषायेण च साधनम् । थात्रीदुरालभातिक्ताप्रियङ्गुकुङ्कुमैः ।। २८९.
A decoction of khadira, udumbara, and aśvattha is effective; also with thātrī, durālabhā, tiktā, priyāṅgu, and saffron.
गुडूच्या च कृतः कल्को हितो युक्तावलम्बिने । उत्पाते च शिले श्राव्ये शुष्कशेफे तथैव च ।। २८९.
A paste made from guḍūcī is beneficial for those with sagging limbs; also in cases of swelling, discharge, and dry scrotum.
क्षिप्रकारिणि दोषे च सद्यो विदलमिष्यते । गोशकृन्मञ्जिकाकुष्ठरजनीतिलसर्षपैः ।। २८९.
When the disorder acts quickly, immediate incision is recommended; with cow dung, manjikā, kuṣṭha, turmeric, sesame, and mustard.
गवां मूत्रेण पिष्टैश्च मर्द्दनं कण्डुनाशनम् । शीतो मधुयुतः क्काथो नाशिकायां सशर्करः ।। २८९.
Rubbing with a paste of these mixed with cow urine relieves itching; a cool decoction with honey and sugar is used for the nostrils.
