चक्रं गदां क्रमाच्छङ्खं मुषलं खड्गशार्ङ्गकम्। पाशाङ्कुशौ च श्रीवत्सं कौस्तुभं वनमालया
The discus, the mace, in order the conch, the pestle, the sword, the bow Śārṅga; the noose, the goad, Śrīvatsa, Kaustubha, and the garland of the forest.
श्रीं श्रीर्महालक्ष्मीतातार्क्ष्यो गुरुरिन्द्रादयोऽर्च्चनम्। सरस्वत्यासनं मूर्त्तिरौं ह्रीं देवी सरस्वती
Śrīṃ, Śrī, Mahālakṣmī, Tātārkṣya, the teacher, Indra and others are to be worshipped; the seat of Sarasvatī, the form, auṃ, hrīṃ, the goddess Sarasvatī.
हृदाद्यालक्ष्मीर्म्मेधा च कलातुष्टिश्च पुष्टिका। गौरी प्रभामती दुर्गा गणो गुरुश्च क्षेत्रपः
With Hṛdā and so on, Alakṣmī, Medhā, Kalā, Tuṣṭi, Puṣṭikā; Gaurī, Prabhāmatī, Durgā, the Gaṇa, the teacher, and the guardian of the field.
तथा गं गणपतये च ह्रीं गौर्यै च श्रीं श्रियै। ह्रीं त्वरितायै ह्रीं सौ त्रिपुरा चतुर्थ्यन्तनमोन्तकाः
Likewise, gaṃ for Gaṇapati, hrīṃ for Gaurī, śrīṃ for Śrī; hrīṃ for Tvaritā, hrīṃ, sau for Tripurā, ending with the fourth case and om.
प्रणवाद्याञ्च नामाद्यमक्षरं बिन्दुसंयुतम्। ओं युतं वा सर्वमन्त्रपूजनाज्जपतः स्मृताः
The syllable at the beginning of the name, joined with a dot, or with Om, is considered as recited when worshipping with all mantras.
होमात्तिलघृताद्यैञ्च धर्म्मकामार्थमोक्षदाः। पूजामन्त्रान् पठेद्यस्तु भुक्तभोगो दिवं व्रजेत्
Whoever recites the worship mantras during offerings with sesame, ghee, and the like, attains righteousness, desire, wealth, and liberation; having enjoyed pleasures, he goes to heaven.
नारद उवाच वक्ष्ये स्नानं क्रियाद्यर्थं नृसिंहेन तु मृत्तिकाम्। गृहीत्वा तां द्विधा कृत्वा मनः स्त्रानमथैकया
Nārada said: I will explain the bathing rite for ritual acts; one should take earth with the Nṛsiṃha mantra, divide it in two, and with one part, cleanse the mind.
निमज्जयाचम्य विन्यस्य सिंहेन कृतारक्षकः। विधिस्नां ततः कुर्य्यात् प्राणायामपुरः सरम्
After immersing and sipping water, placing it down, and being protected by the Siṃha mantra, one should then perform the prescribed bath, preceded by breath control.
हृदि ध्यायन् हरिज्ञानं मन्त्रेणाष्टाक्षरेण हि। त्रिधा पाणितले मृत्सनां दिग्बन्धं सिंहजप्ततः
Meditating in the heart on the knowledge of Hari with the eight-syllable mantra, one should, with earth in the hand, recite the Siṃha mantra three times for protection in all directions.
वासुदेवप्रजप्तेन तीर्थंसङ्कल्प्य चालभेत्। गात्रं वेदादिना मन्त्रैः सम्मार्ज्याराध्य मूर्त्तिना
With the Vāsudeva mantra, one should consecrate the water, then cleanse the body with Vedic and other mantras, worshipping the form.
कृत्वाघमर्षणं वस्त्रं परिधाय समाचरेत्। विन्यस्य मन्त्रैर्द्विर्म्मार्ज्य पाणिस्थं जलमेव च
Having performed the Aghamarṣaṇa rite and put on clean garments, one should proceed; placing water in the hand, purify it twice with mantras.
नारायणेन संयम्य वायुमाघ्राय चोत्सृजेत्। जलं ध्यायन् हरिं पश्चद्दत्त्वार्घ्यं द्वादशाक्षरम्
Controlling the breath with the Nārāyaṇa mantra, inhaling and then releasing, meditating on Hari in the water, one should then offer arghya with the twelve-syllable mantra.
जप्त्वान्याञ्छतशस्तस्य योगपीठादितः क्रमात्। मन्त्रान् दिक्पालपर्यन्तानृषीन् पितृगणानपि
Reciting hundreds of other mantras in order, beginning from the seat of yoga, for the guardians of the directions, the sages, and the groups of ancestors.
मनुष्यान् सर्वभूतानि स्थावरान्तान्यथावसेत्। न्यस्य चाङ्गानि संहृत्य मन्त्रान्यागगृहं व्रजेत्
For all humans, all beings up to immovable ones, one should assign and then withdraw the limbs, and with mantras, enter the place of worship.
एवमन्यासु पूजासु मूलाद्यैः स्नानमाचरेत्
In other acts of worship as well, one should perform bathing with the root and other mantras.
नारद उवाच चक्ष्ये पूजाविधिं विप्रा यत कृत्वा सर्वमाप्नुयात्। प्रक्षालिताङ्घ्निराचम्य वाग्यतः कृतसक्षकः
Nārada said: I will explain the method of worship, by which, O brāhmaṇas, one attains everything; having washed the feet, sipped water, restrained speech, and made protection.
प्राङ्मुखः स्वस्तिकं बद्ध्वा पद्माद्यपरमेव च। यं वीजं नाभिमध्यस्थं धूम्रं चण्डानिलात्मकम्
Facing east, making a svastika and a lotus or other diagram, one should visualize the seed in the center of the navel, smoky, of fierce wind nature.
विशेषयेदशेषन्तु ध्यायेत् कायात्तु कल्मषम्। क्षौं हृत्पङ्कजमध्यस्थं वीजं ते जोनिधिं स्मरन्
One should distinguish all this, meditate to remove impurity from the body, and, remembering the seed 'kṣauṃ' in the heart-lotus, think of it as the source of the womb.
अधोद्धर्वतिर्यग्गाभिस्तु ज्वालाभिः कल्प्रषं दहेत्। शशाङ्काकृतिवद्ध्यायेदम्बरस्थं सुधाम्बुभिः
With flames rising below, above, and across, one should burn the impurity; then, meditating as the moon, one should visualize it in the sky with streams of nectar.
हत्पद्माव्यापिभिर्द्देहं स्वकमाप्लावयेत्सुधीः । सुसुम्नायोनिमार्गेण सर्वनाडीविसर्प्पिभिः
With the rays spreading from the lotus of the heart, the wise should flood their own body, through the path of the suṣumṇā, flowing through all the channels.
शोधयित्वा न्यसेत्तत्त्वं करसुद्धिरथास्त्रकम्। व्यापकं हस्तयोरदौ दक्षिणाङ्गुष्ठतोङ्गकम्
Having purified, one should assign the principle, then purify the hands and perform the āstra gesture; pervading, first on the hands, beginning from the right thumb.
मूलं देहे द्वादशाङ्गं न्यसेन्मन्त्रैर्द्विषट्ककैः। हृदयं च शिरश्चैव शिखा वर्म्मास्त्रलोचने
One should assign the root and the twelve limbs in the body with mantras in pairs of six; the heart, the head, the crest, armor, weapons, and the eyes.
उदरं च तथा पृष्ठं बाहुरुजानुपादकं। मुद्रां दत्त्वा स्मरेद् विष्णुं जप्त्वाष्टशतमर्च्चयेत्
Touching the abdomen, the back, the arms, the knees, and the feet in order, one should form the gesture (mudrā), remember Viṣṇu, recite the eight-syllable mantra, and then perform worship.
वामे तु वर्द्धनीं न्यस्य पूजाद्रव्यं तु दक्षिणे। प्रक्षाल्यास्त्रेण चार्घ्येण गन्धपुष्पान्विते न्यसेत्
Placing the Vardhanī (growth-bestowing) on the left, and the worship materials on the right, after purifying them with the weapon-mantra and arghya (offering water) mixed with fragrance and flowers, one should set them down.
चैतन्यं सर्व्वगं ज्योतिरष्टजप्तेन वारिणा। फडन्तेन तु संसिच्य हस्ते ध्यात्वा हरिं परे
With water empowered by the eightfold recitation, as well as the syllable 'phaṭ', one should sprinkle (the items), meditate on the supreme Hari in the hand, as the all-pervading consciousness and light.
धर्मं ज्ञानं च वैराग्यमैश्वर्य्यं वह्निदिङमुखाः। अधर्मादीनि गात्राणि पूर्वादौ योगपीठके
Righteousness, knowledge, detachment, and lordliness are assigned to the directions of fire and so on; unrighteousness and the rest are assigned to the limbs, beginning from the east, on the yogic seat.
कूर्मं पीठे ह्यनन्तञ्च यमं सूर्य्यादिमण्डलम्। विमलाद्याः केशरस्थानुग्रहा कर्णिकास्थिता
On the seat, one should visualize the tortoise and Ananta, Yama, the solar and other circles; the pure ones and others, the beneficent deities at the filaments, and the gracing deities established at the pericarp.
पूर्वं स्वहृदये ध्यात्वा आवाह्यार्च्चैच्च मण्डले। अर्घ्यं पाद्यं तथा चामं मधुपर्क्कं पुनश्च तत्
First meditating in one's own heart, then invoking and worshipping (the deity) in the maṇḍala, one should offer arghya, water for the feet, water for sipping, and madhuparka, and then again the same.
स्नानं वस्त्रोपवीतञ्च भूषणं गन्धपुष्पकम्। धूपदीपनैवेद्यानि पुण्डरीकाक्षविद्यया
Bathing, cloth, sacred thread, ornaments, fragrance, and flowers, incense, lamp, and food offerings—these should be given with the mantra of Puṇḍarīkākṣa (Lotus-eyed Lord).
यजेदङ्गानि पूर्वादौ द्वारि पूर्वे परेण्डजम्। दक्षे चक्रं गदां सौम्ये कोणे शङ्खं धनुर्न्यसेत्
One should worship the limbs, beginning from the east; at the eastern door, the lord of birds; in the south, the discus; in the gentle (southwest) corner, the mace; in the auspicious (northwest) corner, the conch and the bow should be placed.
