चन्द्रावलोकतस्तारापीड़ोऽस्माच्चन्द्रपर्वतः । चन्द्रगिरेर्भानुरथः श्रुतायुस्तस्य चात्मजः २७३.
From Candrāvaloka came Tārāpīra, and from him Candraparvata; from Candragiri was born Bhānuratha, whose son was Śrutāyu.
अग्निरुवाच सोमवंशं प्रवक्ष्यामि पठितं पापनाशनम् । विष्णुनाभ्यब्जजो ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मपुत्रोऽत्रिरत्रितः ॥ २७४.
Agni said: I will now declare the Soma dynasty, which, when recited, destroys sin. Brahmā, born from Viṣṇu's navel, had a son Atri, and from Atri came Soma.
सोमश्चक्रे राजसूयं त्रैलोक्यं दक्षइणआन्ददौ । समाप्तेऽवभृथे सोमं तद्रूपालोकनेच्छवः ॥ २७४.
Soma performed the Rājasūya sacrifice and gave the three worlds to the priests; when the concluding bath was done, those who wished to see Soma in that form—
कामवाणाभितप्ताङ्ग्यो नरदेव्यः सिषेविरे । लक्ष्मीर्न्नारायणं त्यक्त्वा सिनीवाली च कर्द्दमम् ॥ २७४.
The queens of men, their bodies inflamed with desire, served him; Lakṣmī left Nārāyaṇa, and Sinīvālī left Kardama.
द्युतिं विभावसुन्त्यक्त्वा पुष्टिर्धातारमव्ययम् । प्रभा प्रभाकरन्त्यक्त्वा हविष्मन्तं कुहूः स्वयम् ॥ २७४.
Puṣṭi left the unchanging Dhātā, giving up her radiance; Prabhā left Prabhākara, and Kuhū herself left Haviṣmant.
कीर्त्तिर्जयन्तम्भर्त्तारं वसुर्म्मारीचकश्यपम् । धृतिस्त्यक्त्वा पतिं नन्दीं सोममेवाभजत्तदा ॥ २७४.
Kīrti left her husband Jayanta, Vasu left Mārīca Kaśyapa, and Dhṛti, abandoning her husband Nandī, at that time devoted herself to Soma.
स्वकीया इव सोमोऽपि कामयामास तास्तदा । एवं कृतापचारस्य तासां भर्त्तृगणस्तदा ॥ २७४.
Soma, as if they were his own, also desired those women then; thus, when they had committed this offense, their group of husbands—
न शशाकापचाराय शापैः शस्त्रादिभिः पुनः । सप्तलोकैकनाथत्वमवाप्तस्तपसा ह्युत ॥ २७४.
Could not punish the offense with curses or weapons; for by his austerity, Soma had attained lordship over the seven worlds.
विवभ्राम मतिस्तस्य विनयादनया हता । बृहस्पतेः स वै भार्य्यां तारां नाम यशस्विनीम् ॥ २७४.
His mind, bewildered and ruined by lack of restraint, led him to abduct Tārā, the illustrious wife of Bṛhaspati.
जहार तरसा सोमो ह्यवमन्याङ्गिरःसुतम् । ततस्तद्युद्धमभवत् प्रख्यातं ताकामयम् ॥ २७४.
Soma forcefully took Tārā, disregarding the son of Aṅgiras; then there was a great war, renowned as the Tārā conflict.
देवानां दानवानाञ्च लोकक्षयकरं महत् । ब्राह्मा निवार्य्योशनसन्तारामङ्गिरसे ददौ ॥ २७४.
It was a great war between gods and demons, threatening the worlds with destruction; Brahmā intervened, and Uśanas returned Tārā to Aṅgiras's son.
तामन्तःप्रसवां दृष्ट्वा गर्भं त्यजाब्रवीद्गुरुः । गर्भस्त्यक्तः प्रदीप्तोऽथ प्राहाहं सोमसम्भवः ॥ २७४.
Seeing that she was pregnant, the teacher commanded her to abandon the child; the abandoned fetus, blazing forth, declared, 'I am born of Soma.'
एवं सोमाद् बुधः पुत्त्रः पुत्त्रस्तस्य पुरूरवाः । स्वर्गन्त्यक्त्वोर्वशी सा तं वरयामास चाप्सराः ॥ २७४.
Thus, Budha was the son of Soma, and his son was Purūravas; Urvaśī, having left heaven, chose him, the king, as her husband.
तथा सहाचरद्राजा दशवर्षाणि पञ्च च । पञ्च षट् सप्त चाष्टौ च दश चाष्टौ महामुने ॥ २७४.
So the king lived with her as his companion for ten years and five, then five, six, seven, eight, ten, and eight, O great sage.
एकोऽग्निरभवत् पूर्व्वं तेन त्रेता प्रवर्त्तिता । पुरूरवा योगशीलो गान्धर्व्वलोकमीयिवान् ॥ २७४.
In the beginning there was one Agni, by whom the threefold ritual was established; Pururavas, devoted to yoga, attained the world of the Gandharvas.
आयुर्दृढायुरश्वायुर्धनायुर्धृतिमान् वसुः । दिविजातः शतायुश्च सुषुवे चोर्व्वशी नृपान् ॥ २७४.
Āyu, Dṛḍhāyu, Aśvāyu, Dhanāyu, Dhṛtimān, Vasu, Divijāta, and Śatāyu—these kings were born to Urvaśī, each possessing long life and strength.
आयुषो नहुषः पुत्रो वृद्धशर्म्मा रजिस्तथा । दर्भो विपाप्मा पञ्चागन्यं रजेः पुत्रशतं ह्यभूत् ॥ २७४.
Āyu's son was Nahuṣa; Vṛddhaśarman and Raji likewise; Darbha, Vipāpmā, and Pañcāganya—Raji had a hundred sons.
राजेया इति विख्याता विष्णुदत्तवरो रजिः । देवासुरे रणे दैत्यानबधीत् सुरयाचितः ॥ २७४.
Known as the royal sons, Raji, favored by Viṣṇu, at the gods' request slew the Daityas in the battle between gods and demons.
गतायेन्द्राय पुत्रत्वं दत्वा राज्यं दिवङ्गतः । रजेः पुत्रैर्हृतं राज्यं शक्रस्याथ सुदुर्म्मनाः ॥ २७४.
Having granted his kingdom to Indra as a son, Raji departed to heaven; then Raji's sons, with evil intent, took Indra's kingdom.
ग्रहशान्त्यादिविधिना गुरुरिन्द्राय तद्ददौ । मोहयित्वा रजिसुतानासंस्ते निजधर्म्मगाः ॥ २७४.
By rites for appeasing planetary afflictions, the preceptor gave it back to Indra, having deluded Raji's sons, who then abandoned their own duties.
नहुषस्य सुताः सप्त यतिर्य्ययातिरुत्तमः । उद्भवः पञ्चकश्चैव शर्य्यातिमेघपालकौ ॥ २७४.
Nahuṣa had seven sons: Yati, Yayāti the excellent, Udbhava, and Pañcaka, as well as Śaryāti and Meghapālaka.
यतिः कुमारभावेऽपि विष्णुं ध्यात्वा हरिं गतः । देवयानी सुक्रकन्या ययातेः पत्न्यऽभूत्तदा ॥ २७४.
Yati, even in his youth, meditated on Viṣṇu and attained Hari; Devayānī, daughter of Śukra, then became Yayāti's wife.
वृषपर्व्वजा सर्म्मिष्ठा ययातेः पञ्च तत्सुताः । यदुञ्च तुर्व्वसुञ्चैव देवयानी व्यजायत ॥ २७४.
Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, bore five sons to Yayāti; Devayānī gave birth to Yadu and Turvasu.
द्रुह्यञ्चानूञ्च पूरुञ्च शर्म्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्व्वणी । यदुः पूरुश्चाभवतान्तेषां वंशविवर्द्धनौ ॥ २७४.
Druhyu, Anu, and Pūru were born to Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan; among them, Yadu and Pūru became the enhancers of their lineages.
अग्निरुवाच यदोरासन्पञ्च पुत्रा ज्येष्ठस्तेषु सहस्रजित् । नीलाञ्जिको रधुः क्रोष्टुः शतजिच्च सहस्रजित् ।। २७५.
Agni said: Yadu had five sons, the eldest among them was Sahasrajit; Nīlāñjika, Radhu, Kroṣṭu, and Śatajita were the sons of Sahasrajit.
शतजिद्धैहयो रेणुहयो हय इति त्रयः । धर्म्मनेत्रो हैहयस्य धर्म्मनेत्रस्य संहनः ।। २७५.
Śatajit's sons were Haihaya, Reṇuhaya, and Haya; Dharmanetra was Haihaya's son, and Saṃhana was Dharmanetra's.
महिमा संहनस्यासीन्महिम्नो भद्रसेनकः । भद्रसेनाद् दुर्गमोऽभूद्दुर्गभात्कनकोऽभवत् ।। २७५.
Saṃhana's son was Mahimā; Mahimā's son was Bhadrasenaka; from Bhadrasena came Durgama, and from Durgama, Kanaka was born.
कनकात् कृतवीर्य्यस्तु कृताग्निः करवीरकः । कृतौजाश्च चचतुर्थोऽभूत् कृतवीर्य्यात्तु सोऽर्जुनः ।। २७५.
From Kanaka came Kṛtavīrya, then Kṛtāgni, Karavīraka, and Kṛtaujā as the fourth; from Kṛtavīrya was born Arjuna.
दत्तोऽर्ज्जुनाय तपते सप्तद्वीपमहीशताम् । ददौ बाहुसहस्रञ्च अजेयत्वं रणेऽरिणा ।। २७५.
Datta granted to Arjuna the sovereignty of the earth with seven continents, as well as a thousand arms and invincibility in battle against enemies.
अधर्म्मै वर्त्त मानस्य विष्णुहस्तान्मृतिर्ध्रु बा । दश यज्ञसहस्राणि सोऽर्ज्जुनः कृतवान्तृपः ।। २७५.
Because of unrighteous conduct, his death was certain at the hands of Viṣṇu; Arjuna the king performed ten thousand sacrifices.
