Agni Purana

भर्त्तारं रक्ष नागेन्द्र समयः परिपाल्यतां । ऐरावताधिरूढ़स्तु वज्रहस्तः शतक्रतुः ।। २६९.

Protect your master, O lord of serpents, and keep the agreement; Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, mounted on Airavana.

पृष्ठतोऽनुगतस्त्वेष रक्षतु त्वां स देवराट् । अवाप्नुहि जयं युद्धे सुस्थश्चैव सदा व्रज ।। २६९.

Following behind, may this king of the gods protect you; attain victory in battle and always proceed in good health.

अवाप्नुहि बलञ्चैव ऐरावतसमं युधि । श्रीस्ते सोमाद्‌बलं विष्णोस्तेजः सूर्य्याज्जवोऽनिलात् ।। २६९.

Gain strength in battle equal to Airavana; may you have prosperity from Soma, strength from Vishnu, brilliance from the Sun, and swiftness from the Wind.

स्थैर्य्यं गिरेर्जयं रुद्राद् यशो देवात् पुरन्दरात् । युद्धे रक्षन्तु नागास्त्वां दिशश्च सह दैवतैः ।। २६९.

May you have steadiness from the mountain, victory from Rudra, fame from the god Purandara; in battle, may the elephants and the directions with their deities protect you.

अश्विनौ सह गन्धर्वैः पान्तु त्वां सर्वतो दिशः । मनवो वसवो रुद्रा वायुः सोमो महर्षयः ।। २६९.

May the Ashvins together with the Gandharvas protect you on all sides; the Manus, Vasus, Rudras, Vayu, Soma, and great sages.

नागकिन्नरगन्धर्वयक्षभूतगणा ग्रहाः । प्रमथास्तु सहादित्यैर्भूतेशो मातृभिः सह ।। २६९.

The hosts of Nagas, Kinnaras, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Bhutas, and planets; the Pramathas with the Adityas, and Bhutesha with the Mothers.

शक्रः सेनापतिः स्कन्दो वरुणश्चाश्रितस्त्वयि । प्रदहन्तु रिपून् सर्वान् राजा विजयमृच्छतु ।। २६९.

Shakra, Skanda the commander, and Varuna are your protectors; may they burn all your enemies, and may the king obtain victory.

यानि प्रयुक्तान्यरिभिर्भूषणानि समन्ततः । पतन्तु तव शत्रणां हतानि तव तेजसा ।। २६९.

Whatever ornaments have been employed by enemies all around, let them fall, struck down by your radiance, upon your foes.

कालनेमिबधे यद्वत् युद्धे त्रिपुरघातने । हिरण्यकशिपोर्युद्धे बधे सर्वासुरेषु च ।। २६९.

Just as in the slaying of Kalanemi, in the destruction of Tripura in battle, in the fight with Hiranyakashipu, and in the slaying of all the asuras.

शोभितासि तथैवाद्य शोभस्व समयं स्मर । नीलस्वेतामिमान्दृष्ट्वा नश्यन्त्वाशु नृपारयः ।। २६९.

So now you are adorned; shine forth, remember the agreement; seeing these blue and white ones, let the hostile kings quickly perish.

व्याधिभिर्विविधैर्घोरैः शस्त्रैश्च युधि निर्ज्जिताः । पूतना रेवती लेखा कालरात्रीति पठ्यते ।। २६९.

Defeated in battle by various terrible diseases and weapons: Putana, Revati, Lekha, and the one called Kalaratri.

दहन्त्वाशु रिपून् सर्वान् पताके त्वामुपाश्रिताः । सर्वमेधे महायज्ञे देवदेवेन शूलिना ।। २६९.

May all your enemies be quickly consumed, for you are sheltered by the banner; in the great sacrifice, by the god of gods, the trident-bearer.

शर्वेण जगतश्चैव सारेण त्वं विनिर्म्मितः । नन्दकस्यापरां मूर्त्तिं स्मर शत्रुनिवर्हण ।। २६९.

You were fashioned by Sharva, the essence of the world; remember the other form of Nandaka, O destroyer of enemies.

नीलोत्पलदलश्याम कृष्ण दुःस्वप्ननाशन । असिर्विशसनः खड्गस्तीक्ष्णधारो दुरासदः ।। २६९.

Dark as the petal of a blue lotus, Krishna, destroyer of evil dreams; sword-bearer, sharp-bladed, formidable.

औगर्भो विजयश्चैव धर्म्मपालस्तथैव च । इत्यष्टौ तव नामानि पुरोक्तानि स्वयम्भुवा ।। २६९.

Augarbha, Vijaya, Dharmapala—thus these eight names of yours were previously declared by the self-born.

नक्षत्रं कृत्तिका तुभ्यं गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः । हिरण्यञ्च शरीरन्ते दैवतन्ते जनार्दनः ।। २६९.

The constellation Krittika belongs to you; your teacher is the divine Maheshvara. Gold is your body, and your deity is Janardana.

राजानं रक्ष निस्त्रिंशं सबलं सपुरन्तथा । पिता पितामहो देवः स त्वं पालय सर्वदा ।। २६९.

Protect the king, the sword, his army, and his city as well. The father and grandfather are divine; you must always guard them.

शर्मप्रदस्त्वं समरे वर्मन् सैन्ये यशोऽद्य मे । रक्ष मां रक्षणीयोऽहन्तवानघ नमोऽस्तुते ।। २६९.

You grant protection in battle; today, let me have fame among the warriors. Guard me, for I am to be protected; O faultless one, I bow to you.

दुन्दुभे त्वं सप्त्नानां घोषाद्‌धृदयकम्पनः । भव भूमिपसैन्यानां यथा विजयवर्द्धनः ।। २६९.

You are the drum whose sound shakes the hearts of enemies. Become, for the armies of kings, the increaser of victory.

यथा जीमूतघोषेण हृष्यन्ति वरवारणाः । तथास्तु तव शब्देन हर्षोऽस्माकं मुदावह ।। २६९.

Just as noble elephants rejoice at the sound of thunderclouds, so let your voice bring us joy and delight.

यथा जीमूतशब्देन स्त्रीणं त्रासोऽभिजायते । तथा तु तव शब्देन त्रस्यन्त्वस्मद्‌द्विषो रणे ।। २६९.

Just as the sound of thunder causes fear among women, so let your voice cause our enemies to tremble in battle.

मन्त्रैः सदार्च्चनीयास्ते योजनीया जयादिषु । घृतकम्बलविष्णादेस्त्वभिषेकञ्च वत्सरे ।। २६९.

You should always be worshipped with mantras and employed in victories and other rites. The annual consecration involves ghee, a blanket, and Vishnu.

पुष्कर उवाच सर्वानुग्राहका मन्त्राश्चतुर्वर्गप्रसाधकाः ।२७१.००१ ऋगथर्व तथा साम यजुः संख्या तु लक्षकं ॥२७१.००१ भेदः साङ्ख्यायनश्चैक आश्वलायनो द्वितीयकः ।२७१.००२ शतानि दश मन्त्राणां ब्राह्मणा द्विसहस्रकं ॥२७१.००२ ऋग्वेदो हि प्रमाणेन स्मृतो द्वैपायनादिभिः ।२७१.००३ एकोनिद्विसहस्रन्तु मन्त्राणां यजुषस्तथा ॥२७१.००३ शतानि दश विप्राणां षडशीतिश्च शाखिकाः ।२७१.००४ काण्वमाध्यन्दिनी संज्ञा कठी माध्यकठी तथा ॥२७१.००४ मैत्रायणी च संज्ञा च तैत्तिरीयाभिधानिका ।२७१.००५ वैशम्पायनिकेत्याद्याः शाखा यजुषि संस्थिताः ॥२७१.००५ साम्नः कौथुमसंज्ञैका द्वितीयाथर्वणायनी ।२७१.००६ गानान्यपि च चत्वारि वेद आरण्यकन्तथा ॥२७१.००६ उक्था ऊहचतुर्थञ्च मन्त्रा नवसहस्रकाः ।२७१.००७ सचतुःशतकाश्चैव ब्रह्मसङ्घटकाः स्मृताः ॥२७१.००७ पञ्चविंशतिरेवात्र साममानं प्रकीर्तितं ।२७१.००८ सुमन्तुर्जाजलिश्चैव श्लोकायनिरथर्वके ॥२७१.००८ शौनकः पिप्पलादश्च मुञ्जकेशादयोऽपरे ।२७१.००९ मन्त्राणामयुतं षष्टिशतञ्चोपनिषच्छतं ॥२७१.००९ व्यासरूपी स भगवान् शाखाभेदाद्यकारयत् ।२७१.०१० शाखाभेदादयो विष्णुरितिहासः पुराणकं ॥२७१.०१० प्राप्य व्यासात्पुराणादि सूतो वै लोमहर्षणः ।२७१.०११ सुमतिश्चाग्निवर्चाश्च मित्रयुःशिंशपायनः ॥२७१.०११ कृतव्रतोथ सावर्णिः षट्शिष्यास्तस्य चाभवन् ।२७१.०१२ शांशपायनादयश्चक्रुः(१) पुराणानान्तु संहिताः ॥२७१.०१२ ब्राह्मादीनि पुराणानि हरिविद्या दशाष्ट च ।२७१.०१३ महापुराणे ह्याग्नेये विद्यारूपो हरिः स्थितः ॥२७१.०१३ सप्रपञ्चो निष्प्रपञ्चो मूर्तामूर्तस्वरूपधृक् ।२७१.०१४ तं ज्ञात्वाभ्यर्च्य संस्तूय भुक्तिमुक्तिमवाप्नुयात् ॥२७१.०१४ विष्णुर्जिष्णुर्भविष्णुश्च अग्निसूर्यादिरूपवान् ।२७१.०१५ अग्निरूपेण देवादेर्मुखं विष्णुः परा गतिः ॥२७१.०१५ वेदेषु सपुराणेषु यज्ञमूर्तिश्च गीयते ।२७१.०१६ आग्नेयाख्यं पुराणन्तु रूपं विष्णोर्महत्तरं ॥२७१.०१६ आग्नेयाख्यपुराणस्य कर्ता श्रोता जनार्दनः ।२७१.०१७ तस्मात्पुराणमाग्नेयं सर्ववेदमयं महत् ॥२७१.०१७ सर्वविद्यामयं पुण्यं सर्वज्ञानमयं वरम्(२) ।२७१.०१८ सर्वात्म हरिरूपं हि पठतां शृण्वतां नृणां ॥२७१.०१८ विद्यार्थिनाञ्च विद्यादमर्थिनां श्रीधनप्रदम्(३) ।२७१.०१९ राज्यार्थिनां राज्यदञ्च धर्मदं धर्मकामिनाम् ॥२७१.०१९ स्वर्गार्थिनां स्वर्गदञ्च पुत्रदं पुत्रकामिनां ।२७१.०२० गवादिकामिनाङ्गोदं ग्रामदं ग्रामकामिनां ॥२७१.०२० टिप्पणी १ शिंशपायनादयश्चक्रुरिति ख .. २ परमिति ञ .. ३ श्रीबलप्रदमिति ञ कामार्थिनां कामदञ्च सर्वसौभाग्यसम्प्रदम् ।२७१.०२१ गुणकीर्तिप्रदन्नॄणां जयदञ्जयकामिनाम् ॥२७१.०२१ सर्वेप्सूनां सर्वदन्तु मुक्तिदं मुक्तिकामिनां ।२७१.०२२ पापघ्नं पापकर्तॄणामाग्नेयं हि पुराणकम् ॥२७१.०२२ इत्याग्नेये महापुराणे वेदशाखादिकीर्तिनं नाम एकसप्तत्यधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः पुष्कर उवाच सर्वानुग्राहका मन्त्राश्चतुर्वर्गप्रसाधकाः । ऋगथर्व तथा साम यजुः संख्या तु लक्षकं ।। २७१.

भेदः साङ्‌ख्यायनश्चैक आश्वलायनो द्वितीयकः । शतानि दश मन्त्राणां ब्राह्मणा द्विसहस्रकं ।। २७१.

There is one Sankhyayana branch and a second Ashvalayana branch; ten hundred mantras and two thousand Brahmanas.

ऋग्वेदो हि प्रमाणेन स्मृतो द्वैपायनादिभिः । एकोनद्विसहस्रन्तु मन्त्राणआं यजुषस्तथा ।। २७१.

The Rigveda is established by authority, remembered by Dvaipayana and others. The Yajur mantras are just under two thousand.

शतानि दश विप्राणां षड़शीतिश्च शारिबकाः । काणअवमाध्यन्दिनी संज्ञा कठी माध्यकठीतथा ।। २७१.

Ten hundred belong to the Brahmins, and eighty-six are the branches. Kanva, Madhyandini, Kathi, and Madhyakathi are their names.

मैत्रायणी च संज्ञा च तैत्तिरीयाभिधानिका । वैशम्पायनिकेत्याद्याः शाखा यजुषि संस्थिताः ।। २७१.

Maitrayani and Samjna, and Taittiriya are so named. Vaishampayana and others are branches established in the Yajur.

साम्नः कौथुमसंज्ञैका द्वितीयाथर्वणायनी । गानान्यपि च तत्वारि वेद आरण्यकन्तथा ।। २७१.

Of the Sama, Kauthuma is one branch, and Atharvanayani is the second. There are also four songs and the Aranyakas of the Veda.

उक्‌था ऊहचतुर्थश्च मन्त्रा नवसहस्रकाः । सचतुःशतकाश्चैव ब्ह्मसङ्घटकाः स्मृताः ।। २७१.

Uktha, Uha, and the fourth are mantras numbering nine thousand. Four hundred are the Brahma collections, as remembered.
