द्विजौषधीनां चन्द्रश्च अपान्तु वरुणो नृपः। राज्ञां वैश्रवणो राजा सूर्याणां विष्णुरीश्वरः
Among twice-borns and herbs, the moon is lord; among waters, Varuṇa is king; among kings, Vaiśravaṇa is ruler; among suns, Viṣṇu is sovereign.
वसूनां पावको राजा मरुतां वासवः प्रभुः। प्रजापतीनां दक्षोथ प्रह्लादो दानवाधिपः
Among Vasus, Pāvaka is king; among Maruts, Vāsava is master; among Prajāpatis, Dakṣa; and Prahlāda is lord of the Dānavas.
पितॄणां च यमो राजा भूतादीनां हरः प्रभुः। हिमवांश्चैव शैलानां नदीनां सागरः प्रभुः
Among ancestors, Yama is king; among beings, Hara is master; Himavat is lord of mountains, and the ocean is ruler of rivers.
गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथो नागानामथ वासुकिः। सर्पाणां तक्षको राजा गरुडः पक्षिणामथ
Among Gandharvas, Citraratha; among Nāgas, Vāsuki; among serpents, Takṣaka is king; and Garuḍa among birds.
ऐरावतो गजेन्द्राणां गोवृषोथ गवामपि। मृगाणामथ शार्दूलः प्लक्षो वनस्पतीश्वरः
Airāvata is chief of elephants; Govṛṣa among bulls and cows; among beasts, the tiger; and Plakṣa is lord of trees.
उच्चैः श्रवास्तथाश्वानां सुधन्वा पूर्वपालकः। दक्षिणस्यां शङ्खपदः केतुमान् पालको जले
Uccaiḥśravās is foremost among horses; Sudhanvā is the ancient guardian; in the south, Śaṅkhapada; Ketumān is protector in waters.
अग्निरुवाच प्रथमो महतः सर्गो विज्ञेयो ब्रह्माणस्तु सः। तन्मात्राणां द्वितीयस्तु भूतसर्गो हि स स्मृतः
Agni said: The first creation of the great is known as that of Brahmā; the second, of the subtle elements, is called the creation of beings.
वैकारिकस्तृतीयस्तु सर्ग ऐन्द्रियकः स्मृतः। इत्येष प्राकृतः सर्गः सम्भूतो बुद्धिपूर्वकः
The third is the creation by mind, called the Aindriyaka creation; thus, this is the natural creation, arising from intellect.
मुख्यः सर्गस्चतुर्थस्तु मुख्या वै स्थावराः स्मृताः। तिर्यक्स्त्रोतास्तु यः प्रोक्तस्तैर्य्यग्योन्यस्ततः स्मृतः
The fourth creation is principal, and the immovable are known as principal; the creation called Tiryakstrotas is mutual among them.
तथोद्र्ध्वस्त्रोतसां षष्ठो देवसर्गस्तु स स्मृतः। ततोर्वाकस्त्रोतसां सर्गः सप्तमः स तु मानुषः
The sixth creation is of the upward-flowing, which is the creation of the gods; then, the creation of the downward-flowing is the seventh, which is human.
अष्टमोनुग्रहः सर्गः सात्त्विकस्तामसश्च यः। पञ्चैते वैकृताः सर्गाः प्राकृतास्च त्रयः स्मृताः
The eighth creation is of favor, which is Sāttvika and Tāmasa; these five are called modified creations, and three are known as natural.
प्राकृतो वैकृतश्चैव कौमारो नवमस्तथा। ब्रह्मतो नव सर्गास्तु जगतो मूलहेतवः
The natural, the modified, and the Kaumāra are the ninth; from Brahmā, nine creations arise, which are the fundamental causes of the world.
ख्यात्याद्या दक्षकन्यास्तु भृग्वाद्या उपयेमिरे। नित्यो नैमित्तिकः सर्गस्त्रिधा प्रकथितो जनैः
Khyāti and others, daughters of Dakṣa, were married by Bhṛgu and others; the eternal and occasional creations are described in threefold manner by people.
प्राकृता दैनन्दिनी स्यादन्तरप्रलयादन्। जायते यत्रानुदिनं नित्यसर्गो हि सम्मतः
The natural is daily, arising after intermediate dissolution; where it occurs each day, it is accepted as the eternal creation.
देवौ धाताविधातारौ भृगोः ख्यातिरसूयत। श्रियञ्च पत्नी विष्णोर्या स्तुता शक्रेण वृद्धये
The two gods Dhātā and Vidhātā were born from Khyāti, wife of Bhṛgu; and Śrī, the wife of Viṣṇu, praised by Indra for prosperity.
धातुर्विधातुर्द्वौ पुत्रौ क्रमात् प्राणो मृकण्डुकः। मार्कण्डेयो मृकण्डोश्च जज्ञे वेदशिरास्ततः
Dhātā and Vidhātā each had two sons in order: Prāṇa and Mṛkaṇḍuka; Mārkaṇḍeya was born from Mṛkaṇḍu, and then Vedaśirā.
पौर्णमासश्च सम्भूत्यां मरीचेरभवत् सुतः। स्मृत्यामङ्गिरसः पुत्राः सिनीवाली कुहूस्तथा
Paurṇamāsa was born as the son of Marīci; from Smṛti, the sons of Aṅgiras were Sinīvālī and Kuhū.
राकाश्चानुमतिश्चात्रेरनसूयाप्यजीजनत्। सोमं दुर्वाससं पुत्रं दत्तात्रेयञ्च योगिनम्
Rākā and Anumati were born from Atri; Anasūyā gave birth to Soma, Durvāsas, and Dattātreya the yogin.
प्रीत्यां पुलस्त्यभार्यायां दत्तोलिस्तत्सुतोभवत्। क्षमायां पुलहाज्जाताः सहिष्णुः कर्मपादिकाः
From Pulastya's wife, out of affection, Dattoli was born as his son; from Pulaha and Kṣamā were born Sahiṣṇu and Karmapādikā.
सन्नत्याञ्च क्रतोरासन् बालिखिल्या महौजसः। अङ्गुष्ठपर्वमात्रास्ते ये हि षष्टिसहस्त्रिणः
From Sannati and Kratu were born the mighty Bālikhilyas, sixty thousand in number, each the size of a thumb-joint.
उर्ज्जायाञ्च वशिष्ठाश्च राजा गात्रोर्ध्वबाहुकः । सवनश्चालघुः सुक्रः सुतपाः सप्त चर्षयः
From Urjjā and Vasiṣṭha came King Gātrordhvabāhuka, as well as Savana, Ālaghu, Śukra, Sutapā, and seven seers.
पावकः पवमानोभूच्छुचिः स्वाहाग्निजोभवत्। अग्निस्वात्ता वर्हिषदोऽनग्नयः साग्नयो ह्यजात्
Pāvaka, Pavamāna, and Śuci were born; Svāhā gave birth to Agnija; Agnisvāttas, Varhiṣads, Anagnis, and Sāgnis were also born.
पितृभ्यश्च स्वधायाञ्च मेना वैधारिणी सुते । हिंसाभार्या त्वधर्मस्य तयोर्जज्ञे तथानृतम्
From the Pitṛs and Svadhā, and from Menā, the daughter of Vaidhāra, were born; from Hiṃsā, the wife of Adharma, were born both Tathā and Anṛta.
कन्या च निकृतिस्ताभ्यां भयन्नरकमेव च। माया च वेदना चैव मिथुनन्त्विदमेतयोः
From those two were born a daughter Nikṛti, as well as Bhaya and Naraka; from them also came Māyā and Vedanā, forming a pair.
तयोर्जज्ञेथ वै मायां मृत्युं भूतापहारिणम्। वेदना च सुतं चापि दुः खं जज्ञेथ रौरवात्
From them, Māyā gave birth to Mṛtyu, the taker of beings; Vedanā gave birth to a son named Duḥkha, born from Raurava.
मृत्योर्व्याधिजराशोकतृष्णाक्रोधाश्च जज्ञिरे। ब्रह्मणश्च रुदन् जातो रोदनाद्रुद्रनामकः
From Mṛtyu were born Disease, Old Age, Grief, Thirst, and Anger; from Brahmā's weeping was born Rudra, named from his crying.
भवं शर्वमथेशानं तथा पशुपतिं द्विज। भीममुग्रं महादेवमुवाच स पितामहः
Bhava, Śarva, Īśāna, Paśupati, Bhīma, Ugra, and Mahādeva—these the Grandfather addressed.
दक्षकोपाच्च तद्भार्या देहन्तत्याज सा सती। हिमवद्दुहिता भूत्वा पत्नी शम्भोरभूत् पुनः
Because of Dakṣa's anger, his wife Satī gave up her body; she was reborn as the daughter of Himavat and again became Śambhu's wife.
ऋषिभ्यो नारदाद्युक्ताः पूजाः स्नानादिपूर्विकाः। स्वायम्भुवाद्यास्ताः कृत्वा विष्णवादेर्भुक्तिमुक्तिदाः
From the sages, beginning with Nārada, came the rites of worship, preceded by bathing and so forth; these, performed from the time of Svāyambhuva and others, grant enjoyment and liberation from Viṣṇu and the rest.
नारद उवाच सामान्यपूजां विष्णवादेर्वक्ष्ये मन्त्रांश्च सर्वदान्। समस्तपरिवाराय अच्युताय नमो यजेत
Nārada said: I will now describe the general worship of Viṣṇu and others, along with all the mantras; one should worship Acyuta, along with his entire retinue, with the salutation 'namas'.
