Agni Purana

भक्ष्यताम्बूलपुष्पाद्यं मन्त्रितन्तु प्रयच्छति । यस्य धर्मज्ञ वशगः सोस्य शीघ्रं भविष्यति ।। २६०.

If one gives food, betel, flowers, and the like, after enchanting them with a mantra, O knower of dharma, the recipient quickly comes under his control.

शन्नो मित्र इतीत्येतत् सदा सर्व्वत्र शान्तिदं । गणानां त्वा गणपतिं कृत्वा होमञ्चतुष्पथे ।। २६०.

The recitation of 'Śanno Mitra' always and everywhere brings peace; having invoked you as the Lord of the hosts, offer oblations at the crossroads.

वशीकुर्य्याज्जगत्सर्वं सर्वधान्यैरसंशयम् । हिरण्यवर्णाः शुचयो मन्त्रोयमभिषेचने ।। २६०.

One may bring the whole world under control, without doubt, by offering all kinds of grains; these golden-hued, pure mantras are for consecration.

शन्नो देवीरभिष्टये तथा शान्तिकारः परः । एकचक्रेति मन्त्रेण हुतेनाज्येन भागशः ।। २६०.

'Śanno devīr abhiṣṭaye' likewise brings supreme peace; with the mantra 'Ekacakra', offering clarified butter in portions.

ग्रहेभ्यः शान्तिमाप्नोति प्रसादं न च संशयः । गावो भग इति द्वाभ्यां हुत्वाज्यं गा अवाप्नुयात् ।। २६०.

He attains peace from the planets and their favor, without doubt; by offering clarified butter with the two mantras 'Gāvo bhaga', he obtains cows.

प्रवादांषः सोपदिति गृहयज्ञे विधीयते । देवेभ्यो वनस्पत इति द्रुमयज्ञे विधीयते ।। २६०.

The Pravādāṃṣaḥ Sopa mantra is prescribed in the domestic sacrifice; 'Devebhyo vanaspate' is prescribed in the tree-sacrifice.

पुष्कर उवाच यजुर्व्विधानङ्कथितं वक्ष्ये साम्नां विधानकं । संहितां वैष्णवीञ्जप्त्वा हुत्वा स्यात् सर्व्वकामभाक् ।। २६१.

Puṣkara said: The procedure for the Yajurveda has been described; now I will explain the procedure for the Sāman hymns. By reciting the Vaiṣṇava Saṃhitā and offering oblations, one attains all desires.

संहिताञ्छान्दसीं साधु जप्त्वा प्रीणाति शङ्करं । स्कान्दीं पैत्र्यां संहिताञ्च जप्त्वा स्यात्तु प्रसादवान् ।। २६१.

By properly reciting the Chāndas Saṃhitā, one pleases Śaṅkara; by reciting the Skanda and Pitṛ Saṃhitās, one attains favor.

यत इन्द्र भजामहे हिंसादोषविनाशनं । अवकीर्णी मुच्यते च अग्निस्तिग्मेति वै जपन् ।। २६१.

By reciting 'Yata Indra Bhajāmahe', which destroys the fault of violence, and 'Avakīrṇī mucyate ca Agnistigmeti', one is freed from scattering (of the sacrifice).

सर्व्वंपापहरं ज्ञेयं परितोयञ्च तासु च । अविक्रेयञ्च विक्रीय जपेद्‌घृतवतीति च ।। २६१.

Among these, all are to be known as destroyers of all sin and bringers of satisfaction; one should not sell them, but if sold, one should recite 'Ghṛtavatīti'.

अयानो देव सवितर्ज्ञेयन्दुःस्वप्ननाशनं । अबोध्यग्निरितिमन्त्रेण घृतं राम यथाविधि ।। २६१.

'Ayāno Deva Savitar' is to be known as the destroyer of bad dreams; with the mantra 'Abodhyagnir', offer ghee, O Rāma, as prescribed.

अभ्युक्ष्य घृतशेषेण मेखलाबन्ध इष्यते । स्त्रीणां यासान्तु गर्भाणि पतन्ति भृगुसत्तम ।। २६१.

After sprinkling with the remaining ghee, the tying of the girdle is prescribed; O best of Bhṛgus, for women whose pregnancies are falling.

मणिं जातस्य बालस्य वध्नीयात्तदनन्तरं । सोमं राजानमेतेन व्याधिभिर्विप्रमुच्यते ।। २६१.

A jewel should be tied on the newborn child immediately after birth; by this, the king Soma is freed from diseases.

सर्पसाम प्रयुञ्चानो नाप्नुयात् सर्पजम्भयं । माद्य त्वा वाद्यतेत्येतद्‌धुत्वा विप्रः सहस्रशः ।। २६१.

By employing the Sarpasāman, one does not suffer snake-bite; by offering with the mantra 'Mādya tvā vādyate', the priest gains thousands.

सतावरिमणिम्बद्‌ध्वा नाप्नुयाच्छस्त्रतो भयं । दीर्घतससोर्क्क इति हुत्वान्नं प्राप्नुयाद्वहु ।। २६१.

By tying the Satāvarī jewel, one does not fear weapons; by offering with 'Dīrghatasasorka', one obtains abundant food.

स्वमध्यायन्तीति जपन्न म्रियेत् पिपासया । त्वमिमा ओषधी ह्येतज्‌जप्त्वा ब्याधिंन वाप्नुयात् ।। २६१.

By reciting 'Svamadhyāyanti', one does not die of thirst; by reciting 'Tvamimā oṣadhī', one does not contract disease.

पथि देवव्रतञ्जप्त्वा भयेब्यो विप्रमुच्यते । यदिन्द्रो मुनये त्वेति हुतं सौभाग्यवर्द्धनं ।। २६१.

By reciting 'Pathi Devavrata', one is freed from fears; by offering with 'Yadindro Munaye', good fortune increases.

भगो न चित्र हत्येवं नेत्रयो रञ्जनं हितं । सौभाग्यवर्द्धनं राम नात्र कार्य्या विचारणा ।। २६१.

'Bhago na citra hatyevaṃ' is beneficial for the coloring of the eyes; O Rāma, 'Saubhāgyavardhana' increases good fortune—there is no need for further consideration.

जपेदिन्द्रेति वर्गञ्च तथा सौभाग्यवर्द्धनं । परि प्रिया हि वः कारिः काभ्यां संश्रावयेत् स्त्रियं ।। २६१.

By reciting 'Indreti' and the group of mantras, good fortune increases; 'Pari priyā hi vaḥ kāriḥ'—with these two, one should have a woman listen.

सा तङ्कामयते राम नात्र कार्य्या विचारणा । रथन्तरं वामदेव्यं ब्रह्मवर्च्चसवर्द्धनं ।। २६१.

She desires him, O Rama; there is no doubt about this. The Rathantara and Vamadeva chants increase the brilliance of Brahman.

प्राशयेद्वालकं नित्यं वचाचूर्णं घृतप्लुतं । इन्द्रमिद्‌गाथिनं जप्त्वा भवेच्छ्रुतिधरस्त्वसौ ।। २६१.

One should daily give a boy speech-powder mixed with ghee; after reciting the Indramid Gathin chant, he will become one who retains what he hears.

हुत्वा रथन्तरञ्जप्त्वा पुत्रमाप्नोत्यसंशयं । मयि श्रीरिति मन्त्रोयं जप्तव्यः श्रीविवर्द्धनः ।। २६१.

Having offered the Rathantara and recited it, one surely obtains a son; the mantra 'Mayi Shri' should be recited, for it increases prosperity.

वैरूप्यस्याष्टकं नित्यं प्रयुञ्जानः श्रियं लभेत् । सप्ताष्टकं प्रयुञ्चानः सर्व्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात् ।। २६१.

By regularly performing the eightfold rite for deformity, one attains prosperity; by performing the seven or eightfold rite, one attains all desires.

गव्येषुणेति यो नित्यं सायं प्रातरतन्त्रितः । उपस्थानं गवां कुर्य्यात्तस्य स्युस्ताः सदा गृहे ।। २६१.

Whoever, with discipline, daily at evening and morning, recites 'Gavyeṣuṇeti' and attends to the cows, will always have them in his house.

घृताक्तन्तु यवद्रोणं वात आवातु भेषजं । अनेन हुत्वा विधिवत् सर्व्वां मायां व्यपोहति ।। २६१.

As long as there is a drona of clarified butter, let the wind bring the medicine; by offering this properly, one dispels all illusion.

प्रदेवो दासेन तिलान् हुत्वा कार्म्मणकृन्तनं । अभि त्वा पूर्व्वपीतये वषट़कारसमन्वितं ।। २६१.

Pradeva, having a servant offer sesame seeds, cuts off the effect of actions, with the formula 'Abhi tvā pūrvapītaye' accompanied by the vaṣaṭ sound.

वासकेध्मसहस्रन्तु हुतं युद्‌धे जयप्रदं । हस्त्यश्वपुरुषान् कुर्य्याद् बुधः पिष्टमयान् शुभान् ।। २६१.

A thousand bundles of fuel offered in battle brings victory; the wise should make auspicious figures of elephants, horses, and men out of flour.

परकीयानथोद्देश्य प्रधानपुरुषांस्तथा । सुस्विन्नान् पिष्टकवरान् क्षुरेणोत्‌कृत्य भागशः ।। २६१.

Then, for others and for the chief persons, having made well-cooked flour figures, cut them into portions with a razor.

अभि त्वा शूर णोनुमो मन्त्रेणानेन मन्त्रवित् । कृत्वा सर्षपतैलाक्तान् क्रोधेन जुहुयात्ततः ।। २६१.

O hero, the knower of mantras should recite this mantra over you; having anointed them with mustard oil, he should then offer them with intent.
