Agni Purana

कन्यानाम गृहीत्वा तु कन्यालाभकरः परः । भयेषु तु जपेन्नित्यं भयेभ्यो विप्रमुच्यते ।। २६०.

By taking the names of maidens, one obtains maidens; in times of fear, reciting constantly, one is freed from dangers.

धुस्तूरपुष्पं सघृतं हुत्वा स्यात् सर्वकामभाक् । हुत्वा तु गुग्गुलं राम स्वप्ने पश्यति शङ्करं ।। २६०.

By offering dhattūra flowers with ghee, one attains all desires; by offering guggulu, O Rāma, one sees Śaṅkara in a dream.

युञ्चते मनोऽनुवाकं जप्त्वा दीर्घायुराप्नुयात् । विष्णोरराटमित्येतत् सर्वबाधाविनाशनं ।। २६०.

By reciting the 'yuñcate mano' Anuvāka, one attains long life; the 'viṣṇorarāṭam' mantra destroys all afflictions.

रक्षोघ्नञ्च यशस्यञ्च तथैव विजयप्रदं । अयन्नो अग्निरित्येतत् संग्रामे विजयप्रदं ।। २६०.

It is both protective and brings fame, and also grants victory; the mantra 'ayanno agnir' bestows victory in battle.

इदमापः प्रवहत स्नाने पापापनोदनं । विश्वकर्मन्नु हविषा सूचीं लौहीन्दशाङ्गुलाम् ।। २६०.

O waters, carry away sins during bathing; O Viśvakarman, with the offering, a ten-finger-long iron needle is used.

कन्याया निखनेद् द्वारि साऽन्यस्मै न प्रदीयते । देव सवितरेतेन हुतेनैतेन चान्नवान् ।। २६०.

The needle is buried at the door of the maiden, and she is not given to another; by offering with this, O god Savitṛ, one obtains food.

अग्नौ स्वाहेति जुहुयाद्‌बलकामो द्विजोत्तम । तिलैर्यवैश्च धर्मज्ञ तथापामार्गतण्डुलैः ।। २६०.

O best of twice-born, one desiring strength should offer into the fire with 'svāhā,' using sesame, barley, and likewise apāmārga rice, O knower of dharma.

सहस्रमन्त्रितां कृत्वातथा गोरोचनां द्विज । तिलकञ्च तथा कृत्वा जनस्यप्रियकामियात् ।। २६०.

Having prepared a thousand-times-empowered pigment and also cow's gallstone, O twice-born, and having made a mark with it, one may go forth seeking the favor of people.

रुद्राणाञ्च तथा जप्यं सर्व्वाघविनिसूदनं । सर्व्वकर्मकरो होमस्तथा सर्व्वत्र शान्तिदः ।। २६०.

Recitation of the Rudra mantras, which destroy all sins, and the performance of homa accomplish all actions and bring peace everywhere.

अजाविकानामश्वानां कुञ्जराणां तथा गवां । मनुष्याणान्नरेन्द्राणां बालानां योषितामपि ।। २६०.

For goats, horses, elephants, cows, humans, kings, children, and even women—

ग्रामाणां नगराणाञ्च देशानामपि भार्गव । उपद्रुतानां धर्मज्ञ व्याधितानां तथैव च ।। २६०.

For villages, cities, and also regions, O Bhārgava, for those afflicted or diseased, O knower of dharma, likewise—

मरके समनुप्राप्ते रिपुजे च तथा भये । रुद्रहोमः परा शान्तिः पायसेन घृतेन च ।। २६०.

When death approaches, or in the face of enemies or fear, the Rudra homa performed with milk-rice or ghee brings supreme peace.

कुष्माण्डघृतहोमेन सर्व्वान् पापान् व्यपोहति । शक्तुयावकभैक्षाशी नक्तं मनुजसत्तम ।। २६०.

By offering ghee with gourds in the fire, all sins are removed; the best of men should eat barley gruel or food obtained by begging at night.

बहिःस्नानरतो मासान्मुच्यते ब्रह्यहत्यया । मधुवातेति मन्त्रेण होमादितोऽखिलं लभेत् ।। २६०.

Engaged in bathing outside for a month, one is freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin; by the mantra 'madhuvāta', all is obtained through homa.

दधिक्राव्णेति हुत्वा तु पुत्रान् प्राप्नोत्यसंशयं । तथा घृतवतीत्येतदायुष्यं स्यात् घृतेन तु ।। २६०.

By offering oblations with the mantra 'dadhikrāvaṇ', one certainly obtains sons; likewise, with the mantra 'ghṛtavatī', longevity is gained through ghee.

स्वस्ति न इन्द्र इत्येतत्सर्व्वबाधाविनाशनं । इह गावः प्रजायध्वमिति पुष्टिविवर्धनम् ।। २६०.

The mantra 'svasti na indra' destroys all afflictions; 'may cows multiply here' increases prosperity.

घृताहुतिसहस्रेण तथाऽलक्ष्मीविनाशनं । स्रुवेण देवस्य त्वेति हुत्वापामार्गतण्डुलं ।। २६०.

By a thousand oblations of ghee, misfortune is destroyed; by offering apāmārga rice with the ladle, saying 'of the god',

मुच्यते विकृताच्छीघ्रमभिचारान्न संशयः । रुद्र पातु पलाशस्य समिद्भिः कनकं लभेत् ।। २६०.

One is quickly freed from deformity and from sorcery, without doubt; by offering Rudra's mantra with palāśa wood, one obtains gold.

शिवो भवेत्यग्न्युत्पाते व्रीहिभिर्जुहुयान्नरः । याः सेना इति चैतच्च तस्करेभ्यो भयापहम् ।। २६०.

At the appearance of fire, one should offer rice with the mantra 'śivo bhava'; and with the mantra 'yāḥ senāḥ', fear from thieves is dispelled.

यो अस्मभ्यमरातीयाद्‌धुत्वा कृष्णतिलान्नरः । सहस्रशोऽभिचारच्च मुच्यते विकृताद्‌ द्विज ।। २६०.

Whoever is hostile to us—by offering black sesame in the fire, one is freed a thousand times from sorcery and deformity, O twice-born.

अन्नेनान्नपतेत्येवं हुत्वा चान्नमवाप्नुयात् । हंसः शुचिः सदित्येतज्जप्तन्तोयेऽघनाशनं ।। २६०.

By offering food with the mantra 'annena annam', one obtains food; by reciting 'haṃsaḥ śuciḥ sadā', it destroys sin in water.

चत्वारि शृङ्गेत्येतत्तु सर्व्वपापहरं जले । देवा यज्ञेति जप्त्वा तु ब्रह्मलोके महीयते ।। २६०.

The mantra 'catvāri śṛṅgāḥ' removes all sins in water; by reciting 'devā yajña', one is honored in the world of Brahma.

वसन्तेति च हुत्वाज्यं आदित्याद्वरमाप्नुयात् । सुपर्णोसीति चेत्यस्य कर्मव्याहृतिवद्भवेत् ।। २६०.

By offering ghee with the mantra 'vasanteti', one attains a boon from the sun; and 'suparṇosi' acts as a karmic vyāhṛti.

नमः स्वाहेति त्रिर्ज्जप्त्वा बन्धनान्मोक्षमाप्नुयात् । अन्तर्ज्जले त्रिरावर्त्य द्रुपदा सर्व्वपापमुक् ।। २६०.

By reciting 'namaḥ svāhā' three times, one attains release from bondage; by turning three times in water, O Drupada, one is freed from all sin.

इह गावः प्रजायध्वं मन्त्रोयं बुद्धिवर्द्धनः । हुतन्तु सर्पिषा दध्ना पयसा पायसेन वा ।। २६०.

The mantra 'may cows multiply here' increases intelligence; the oblation should be made with clarified butter, curds, milk, or milk-rice.

शतं य इति चैतेन हुत्वा पर्णफलानि च । आरोग्यं श्रियमाप्नोति जीवतञ्च चिरन्तथा ।। २६०.

By offering with the mantra 'śataṃ ya' and with leaves and fruits, one attains health, prosperity, and a long life.

ओषधीः प्रतिमोदध्वं वपने लवनेऽर्थकृत् । तस्मा इति च मन्त्रेण बन्धनस्थो विमुच्यते । युवा सुवासा इत्येव वासांस्याप्नोति चोत्तमम् ।। २६०.

With the mantra 'oṣadhīḥ pratimodadhvaṃ' during shaving or salting, one gains wealth; with 'tasmā', one bound is released; with 'yuvā suvāsā', one obtains excellent garments.

मुञ्चन्तु मा शपथ्यानि सर्व्वान्तकविनाशनम् । मा मा हिंसीस्तिलाज्येन हुतं रिपुविनाशनं ।। २६०.

Let all curses that bring destruction be released from me; may I not be harmed—by offering sesame and ghee, the destruction of enemies is achieved.

नमोऽस्तु सर्व्वसर्पेभ्यो घृतेन पायसेन तु । कृणुध्वं पाज इत्येतदभिचारविनाशनं ।। २६०.

Homage to all serpents—by offering ghee and milk-rice, perform the 'pāja' rite; this destroys malevolent magic.
