अंशुश्च द्वादशादित्या आसन् वैवस्वतेन्तरे। अरिष्टनेमिपत्नीनामपत्यानीह षोडश
Aṃśu was also among the twelve Ādityas in the era of Vaivasvata; among the wives of Ariṣṭanemi, there were sixteen offspring here.
बहुपुत्रस्थ विदुषश्चतस्त्रो विद्युतः सुताः । प्रत्यङ्गिरसजाः श्रेष्ठाः कृशाश्वस्य सुरायुदाः
Of the wise Bahuputra, there were four daughters of Vidyut; the best among the sons of Pratyangiras was Kṛśāśva, who bore the divine weapons.
उदयास्तमने सूर्ये तद्वदेते युगे युगे। हिरण्यकशिपुर्द्दित्यां हिरण्याक्षश्च कश्यपात्
Just as the sun rises and sets, so too, in every age, Hiraṇyakaśipu was born from Diti and Hiraṇyākṣa from Kaśyapa.
सिंहिका चाभवत् कन्या विप्रचित्तेः परिग्रहः। राहुप्रभृतयस्तस्यां सैंहिकेया इति श्रुताः
And Siṃhikā was born as a daughter, taken as wife by Vipracitti; from her, those beginning with Rāhu, known as the Saiṃhikeyas, were born.
हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्रास्चत्वारः प्रथितौजसः। अनुह्रादश्च ह्लादश्च प्रह्रादश्चातिवैष्णवः
Hiraṇyakaśipu had four sons, renowned for their might: Anuhrāda, Hlāda, Prahlāda—most devoted to Viṣṇu—
संह्रादश्च चतुर्थोभूत् ह्रादपुत्रो ह्रदस्तथा। ह्रदस्य पुत्र आयुष्मान् शिबिर्वास्कल एव च
and Saṃhrāda was the fourth; Hlāda’s son was Hrada, and Hrada’s sons were Āyuṣmān, Śibi, and Āskala.
विरोजनस्तु प्राह्रादिर्बलिर्जज्ञे विरोचनात्। बलेः पुत्रशतं त्वासीद्बाणश्रेष्ठं महामुने
Virocana was the son of Prahlāda, and from Virocana was born Bali; Bali had a hundred sons, the foremost being Bāṇa, O great sage.
पुरा कल्पे हि वाणेन प्रसाद्योमापतिं वरः । पार्श्वतो विहरिष्यामीत्येवं प्राप्तश्च ईश्वरात्
In a former age, Bāṇa pleased the Lord of Uma with his devotion and received a boon: 'I will dwell ever at your side,' thus he obtained from the Lord.
हिरण्याक्षसुताः पञ्च सम्बरः शकुनिस्त्विति । द्विमूर्द्धा शह्कुरार्यस्च शतमासन् दनोः सुताः
Hiraṇyākṣa had five sons, among whom were Sambarasura and Śakuni; Dvimūrdhā, Śaṅkura, and Ārya were also his sons, and Danu had a hundred sons.
स्वर्भानोस्तु प्रभा कन्या पुलोम्नस्तु शची स्मृता। उपदानवी हयशिरा शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी
Swarbhānu’s daughter was Prabhā, and Puloman’s daughter is known as Śacī; Upadānavī, Hayaśirā, Śarmiṣṭhā, and Vārṣaparvaṇī are also named.
पुलोमा कालका चैव वैश्वानरसुते उभे। कश्यपस्प तु भार्ये द्वे तयोः पुत्रास्च कोटयः
Pulomā and Kālakā, both daughters of Vaiśvānara, became wives of Kaśyapa; from them were born millions of sons.
प्रह्रादस्य चतुष्कोट्यो निवातकवचाः कुले। ताम्रायाः षट् सुताः स्युश्च काकी श्वेनी च भास्यपि
Prahlāda’s lineage numbered forty million Nivātakavacas; Tāmrā had six daughters: Kākī, Śvenī, and Bhāsyā as well.
गृध्रिका श्रुचि सुग्रीवा ताभ्यः काकादयोऽभवन्। अश्वाश्चोष्ट्राश्च ताम्राया अरुणो गरुडस्तथा
Gṛdhrikā, Śruci, and Sugrīvā—these were also Tāmrā’s daughters; from them came crows and others, and from Tāmrā also horses, camels, Aruṇa, and Garuḍa.
विनतायाः सहस्त्रन्तु सर्पाश्च सुरसाभवाः। काद्रवेयाः सहस्त्रन्तु शेषवासुकितक्षकाः
Vinatā bore a thousand sons, and from Surasā came the serpents; from Kadrū too, a thousand sons—Śeṣa, Vāsuki, and Takṣaka among them.
दंष्ट्रिणः क्रोधवशजा धरोत्याः पक्षिणो जले। सुरभ्यां गोमहिष्यादि हरोत्पन्नास्तृणादयः
From Krodhavaśā were born the fanged creatures; from Surabhi came cows, buffaloes, and other hoofed animals; from Ira, the grasses and plants.
खसायां यक्षरक्षांसि मुनेरप्सरसोभवत्। अरिष्टायान्तु गन्धर्वाः कश्यपाद्धि स्थिरञ्चरम्
From Khasā were born the Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, and from the sage’s union with Apsaras; from Ariṣṭā came the Gandharvas, both steady and moving, from Kaśyapa.
एषां पुत्रादयोऽसङ्ख्या देवैर्वै दानवा जिताः । दितिर्विनष्टपुत्रा वै तोषयामास कश्यपम्
Their descendants are countless; the gods conquered the Dānavas. Diti, having lost her sons, sought to please Kaśyapa.
पुत्रमिन्द्रप्रहर्त्तारमिच्छती प्राप कश्यपात्। पादाप्रक्षालनात् सुप्ता तस्या गर्भं जघान ह
Desiring a son who would strike down Indra, she obtained one from Kaśyapa; but as she slept after washing her feet, Indra destroyed her embryo.
छिद्रमन्विष्य चेन्द्रस्तु ते देवा मरुतोऽभवन्। शक्रस्यैकोनपञ्चाशत्सहाया दीप्ततेजसः
Indra, finding an opportunity, split the embryo; from it arose the Maruts, fifty-one companions of Śakra, blazing with energy.
एतत् सर्वं हरिर्ब्रह्मा अभिषिच्य पृथुं नृपम्। ददौ क्रमेण राज्यानि अन्येषामधिपो हरिः
All this, Hari and Brahmā, having consecrated King Pṛthu, granted the kingdoms in order; Hari became lord over the others.
द्विजौषधीनां चन्द्रश्च अपान्तु वरुणो नृपः। राज्ञां वैश्रवणो राजा सूर्याणां विष्णुरीश्वरः
Among twice-borns and herbs, the moon is lord; among waters, Varuṇa is king; among kings, Vaiśravaṇa is ruler; among suns, Viṣṇu is sovereign.
वसूनां पावको राजा मरुतां वासवः प्रभुः। प्रजापतीनां दक्षोथ प्रह्लादो दानवाधिपः
Among Vasus, Pāvaka is king; among Maruts, Vāsava is master; among Prajāpatis, Dakṣa; and Prahlāda is lord of the Dānavas.
पितॄणां च यमो राजा भूतादीनां हरः प्रभुः। हिमवांश्चैव शैलानां नदीनां सागरः प्रभुः
Among ancestors, Yama is king; among beings, Hara is master; Himavat is lord of mountains, and the ocean is ruler of rivers.
गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथो नागानामथ वासुकिः। सर्पाणां तक्षको राजा गरुडः पक्षिणामथ
Among Gandharvas, Citraratha; among Nāgas, Vāsuki; among serpents, Takṣaka is king; and Garuḍa among birds.
ऐरावतो गजेन्द्राणां गोवृषोथ गवामपि। मृगाणामथ शार्दूलः प्लक्षो वनस्पतीश्वरः
Airāvata is chief of elephants; Govṛṣa among bulls and cows; among beasts, the tiger; and Plakṣa is lord of trees.
उच्चैः श्रवास्तथाश्वानां सुधन्वा पूर्वपालकः। दक्षिणस्यां शङ्खपदः केतुमान् पालको जले
Uccaiḥśravās is foremost among horses; Sudhanvā is the ancient guardian; in the south, Śaṅkhapada; Ketumān is protector in waters.
अग्निरुवाच प्रथमो महतः सर्गो विज्ञेयो ब्रह्माणस्तु सः। तन्मात्राणां द्वितीयस्तु भूतसर्गो हि स स्मृतः
Agni said: The first creation of the great is known as that of Brahmā; the second, of the subtle elements, is called the creation of beings.
वैकारिकस्तृतीयस्तु सर्ग ऐन्द्रियकः स्मृतः। इत्येष प्राकृतः सर्गः सम्भूतो बुद्धिपूर्वकः
The third is the creation by mind, called the Aindriyaka creation; thus, this is the natural creation, arising from intellect.
मुख्यः सर्गस्चतुर्थस्तु मुख्या वै स्थावराः स्मृताः। तिर्यक्स्त्रोतास्तु यः प्रोक्तस्तैर्य्यग्योन्यस्ततः स्मृतः
The fourth creation is principal, and the immovable are known as principal; the creation called Tiryakstrotas is mutual among them.
तथोद्र्ध्वस्त्रोतसां षष्ठो देवसर्गस्तु स स्मृतः। ततोर्वाकस्त्रोतसां सर्गः सप्तमः स तु मानुषः
The sixth creation is of the upward-flowing, which is the creation of the gods; then, the creation of the downward-flowing is the seventh, which is human.
