Agni Purana

ऋग्भिः षोड़शभिः कुर्य्यादिन्द्रस्येति दिने दिने । हिहण्यस्तूपमित्येतज्जपन् शत्रून् प्रबाधते ।। २५९.

By reciting the sixteen Ṛgvedic verses for Indra each day, and repeating 'hihaṇyastūpam', one overcomes enemies.

क्षेमी भवति चाध्वानो ये ते पन्था जपन् नरः । रौद्रीभिः षड्‌भिरीशानं स्तूयाद् यो वै दिने दिने ।। २५९.

A man who recites the six fierce hymns to Īśāna daily becomes secure on his journeys along those paths.

चरुं वा कल्पयेद्रौद्रं तस्यशान्तिः पराभवेत् । उदित्युदन्तमादित्यमुपतिष्ठन् दिने दिने ।। २५९.

Or, by preparing a fierce oblation, he attains supreme peace, worshipping the rising and setting sun each day.

क्षिपेज्जलाञ्जलीन् सप्त मनोदुःखविनाशनं । द्विषन्तमित्यथार्द्धर्च्चं यद्विप्रान्तं जपन् स्मरेत् ।। २५९.

He should offer seven handfuls of water, which destroys mental sorrow, and, reciting 'dviṣantam' and half a verse, remember what the sages have taught.

आगस्कृत् सप्तरात्रेण विद्वेषमधिगच्छति । आरोग्यकामी रोगी वा प्रस्कन्नस्योत्तमं जपेत् ।। २५९.

One who has committed a transgression attains reconciliation within seven nights; whether seeking health or afflicted, he should recite the supreme mantra for the fallen.

उत्तमस्तस्य चार्द्धर्च्चो जपेद्वै विविधासने । उदयत्यायुरक्ष्यय्यं तेजो मध्यन्दिने जपेत् ।। २५९.

He should recite the best half-verse in various postures; at sunrise, he gains undiminishing life and energy by reciting at midday.

अस्तं प्रतिगते सूर्य्ये द्विषन्तं प्रतिबाधते । न वयश्चेति सूक्तानि जपन् शत्रून्नियच्छति ।। २५९.

When the sun sets, reciting 'dviṣantam' repels adversaries; reciting the hymns 'na vayaś' restrains enemies.

. एकाद्श सुपर्णस्य सर्व्वकामान्विनिर्द्दिशेत् । आद्यात्मिकी कइत्येता जपन्मोक्षमवाप्नुयात् ।। २५९.

By reciting the eleven suparṇa hymns, all desires are fulfilled; reciting these as pertaining to the self, one attains liberation.

आ नो भद्रा इत्यनेन दीर्घमायुरबाप्नुयात् । त्वं सीमेति च सूक्तेन नवं पश्येन्निशाकरं ।। २५९.

By reciting 'ā no bhadrā', one attains long life; by the hymn 'tvaṃ sīma', one beholds the new moon.

उपतिष्ठेत् समित्पाणिर्व्वासांस्याप्नोत्यसंशयं । आयुरीप्सन्निममिति कौत्स सूक्तं सदा जपे ।। २५९.

Approaching with fuel in hand, one certainly obtains garments; desiring long life, one should always recite the Kautsa hymn, 'imam'.

आपनः शोशुचदिति स्तुत्वा मध्ये दिवाकरं । यथा मुञ्चति चेषीकां तथा पापं प्रमुञ्चति ।। २५९.

By praising the sun at midday with 'āpanaḥ śośucad', just as it sheds its rays, so too does one cast off sin.

जातवेदस इत्येतज्जपेत् स्वस्त्ययनं पथि । भयैर्व्विमुच्यते सर्व्वः स्वस्तिमानाप्नुयात् गृहान् ।। २५९.

Reciting 'jātavedasa' on the path brings auspiciousness; one is freed from all fears and attains well-being at home.

व्युष्टायाञ्च तथा रात्र्यामेतद्‌दुःस्वप्ननाशनं । प्रमन्दिनेति सूयन्त्या जपेद्‌गर्भविमोचनं ।। २५९.

At dawn and at night, this destroys evil dreams; reciting 'pramandineti sūyantyā' grants release from the womb.

जपन्निन्द्रमिति स्नातो वै श्वदेवन्तु सप्तकं । मुञ्चत्याज्यं तथा जुह्वत् सकलं किल्विषं नरः ।। २५९.

Reciting 'indram' while bathing, and the seven 'śvadeva' hymns, and offering clarified butter, a man is freed from all sin.

इमामिति जपन् शश्वत् कामानाप्नोत्यभीप्सितान् । मानस्तोक इति द्वाभ्यां त्रिरात्रोपोषितः शुचिः ।। २५९.

By reciting 'imām', one always attains desired wishes; with 'mānastoka', after fasting for three nights in purity, and with both hymns,

औडुम्बरीश्च जुहुयात्समिधश्चाज्यसंस्कृताः । छित्त्वा सर्व्वान्मृत्युपाशान् जीवेद्रोगविवर्जितः ।। २५९.

He should offer udumbara wood and fuel consecrated with ghee; cutting all bonds of death, he lives free from disease.

ऊद्‌र्ध्ववाहुरनेनैव स्तुत्वा शम्भुं तथैव च । मानस्तोकेति च ऋचा शिखाबन्धे कृते नरः ।। २५९.

By praising Śambhu with 'ūrdhvavāhur' in the same way, and reciting 'mānastoka' at the time of tying the topknot, a man—

अधृष्यः सर्वभूतानां जायते संशयं विना । चित्रमित्युपतिष्ठेत त्रिसन्ध्यं भास्करं तथा ।। २५९.

He becomes invincible among all beings, free from doubt; let him worship the Sun at the three junctions of the day, considering it wondrous.

समित्‌पाणिर्नरो नित्यमीप्सितं धनमाप्नुयात् । अथ स्वप्नेति च जपन् प्रातर्मध्यन्दिने दिने ।। २५९.

A man holding sacrificial sticks always attains the desired wealth; and, reciting 'Atha Svapna' in the morning and at midday each day—

दुःस्वप्नञ्चार्द्दते कृत्स्नं भोजनञ्चाप्नुयाच्छुभम् । उभे पुमानिति तथा रक्षोघ्नः परिकीर्त्तितः ।। २५९.

He overcomes all evil dreams and obtains auspicious food; reciting 'Ubhay Pumaan', he is also called a destroyer of demons.

उभे वासा इति ऋचो जपन् कामानवाप्नुयात् । न सागान्निति च जपन् मुच्यते चाततायिनः ।। २५९.

Reciting the verse 'Ubhay Vasa', he attains his desires; reciting 'Na Saagann', he is freed from the harm of enemies.

कया शुभेति च जपन् जातिश्रैष्ठमवाप्नुयात् । इमन्नृसोममित्येतत् सर्व्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात् ।। २५९.

Reciting 'Kaya Shubhe', he attains excellence of birth; reciting 'Imam Nṛsomam', he attains all desires.

पितरित्युपतिष्ठेत नित्यमर्थमुपस्थितं । अग्ने नयेति सूक्तेन घृतहोमश्च मार्गगः ।। २५९.

Let him always worship the ancestors for the sake of present needs; with the hymn 'Agne Naya', and by offering ghee into the fire, he follows the right path.

वीरान्नयमवाप्नोति सुश्लोकं यो जपेत् सदा। सङ्कतो नेति सूक्तेन विषान् सर्व्वान् व्यपोहति ।। २५९.

He who always recites 'Viran Nayam' attains renowned offspring; with the hymn 'Sankato Neti', he dispels all poisons.

यो जात इति सूक्तेन सर्व्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात् । गणानामिति सूक्तेन स्निग्धमाप्नोत्यनुत्तमं ।। २५९.

By reciting the hymn 'Yo Jata', he attains all desires; by the hymn 'Gananam', he obtains supreme and lasting affection.

यो मे राजन्नितीमांन्तु दुःस्वप्नशमनीमृचं । अध्वनि प्रस्थितो यस्तु पश्येच्छत्रुं समुत्थितं ।। २५९.

He who recites the verse 'Yo Me Rajan' for the removal of evil dreams, when setting out on a journey or facing a rising enemy—

अप्रसस्तं प्रशस्तं वा कुविदङ्ग इमं जपेत् । द्वाविंशकं जपन् सूक्तमाध्यात्मिकमनुत्तमं ।। २५९.

Whether the situation is favorable or not, let him recite this; reciting the twenty-second hymn, the supreme spiritual hymn—

पर्वसु प्रयतो नित्यमिष्टान् कामान् समश्नुते । कृणुष्वेति जपन् सूक्तं जुह्वदाज्यं समाहितः ।। २५९.

One who is always pure at the sacred junctions attains desired objects; reciting the hymn 'Kṛṇuṣva', let him offer clarified butter with concentration.

अरातीनां हरेत् प्राणान् रक्षांस्यपि विनाशयेत् । उपतिष्ठेत् स्वयं वह्निं परित्यचा दिने दिने ।। २५९.

He takes away the life of adversaries and destroys demons; let him worship the fire himself, relinquishing it day by day.
