अङ्गहीनश्च कर्त्तव्यो दाप्यश्चोत्तमसाहसं । शक्तो ह्यमोक्षयन् स्वामी दंष्ट्रिणः श्रृङ्गिणस्तथा ।। २५८.
He should be made mutilated, and must pay the highest fine; if the owner is able but does not restrain a biting or horned animal—
प्रथमं साहसं दद्याद्विक्रूष्टे द्विगुणं तथा । अचौरञ्चौरेऽभिवदन् दाप्यः पञ्चशतं दमं ।। २५८.
For a first violent offense, the fine is imposed; if repeated, it is doubled; one who falsely accuses an innocent person of theft must pay a fine of five hundred.
राज्ञोऽनिष्टप्रवक्तारं तस्यैवाक्रोशकं तथा । मृताङ्गलग्नविक्रेतुर्गुरोस्ताड़यितुस्तथा ।। २५८.
The one who proclaims the king's misfortune, and likewise the one who curses him; the seller of objects taken from the dead, and the one who delivers a guru across (a river).
तन्मन्त्रस्य च भेत्तारं छित्त्वा जिह्वां प्रवासयेत् । राजयानासनारोढुर्दण्डो मध्यमसाहसः ।। २५८.
The one who breaks the mantra—cutting his tongue, he should be exiled; for one who mounts the king's seat without authority, the penalty is the middle grade of punishment.
. द्विनेत्रभेदिनो राजद्विष्टादेशकृतस्तथा । विप्रत्वेन च शूद्रस्य जीवतोऽष्टशतो दमः ।। २५८.
For one who injures both eyes, or acts on the king's hated command, or for a Śūdra who claims the status of a Brahmin while alive, the fine is eight hundred.
यो मन्येताजितोऽस्मीति न्याये नाभिपराजितः । तमायान्तं पुनर्ज्जित्वा दण्डयेद् द्विगुणं दमं ।। २५८.
Whoever thinks, 'I am not defeated,' though not vanquished by justice; if he returns and is again defeated, he should be fined double the penalty.
राज्ञाऽन्यायेन यो दण्डा गृहीतो वरुणायतं । निवेद्य दद्याद्विप्रेभ्यः स्वयं त्रिशद्गुणीकृतं ।। २५८.
If someone is fined by the king unjustly, he should report it and give it to the Brahmins, himself tripling the amount.
धर्म्मश्चार्थश्च कीत्तिश्च लोकपङ्क्तिरुपग्रहः । प्रजाभ्यो बहुमानञ्च स्वर्गस्थानञ्च शाश्वत्म् ।। २५८.
Dharma, wealth, fame, the support of the world, respect from the people, and an eternal place in heaven.
अग्निरुवाच ऋग्यजुःसामाथर्वविधानं पुष्करोदितम् । भुक्तिभुक्तिकरं जप्याद्धोमाद्रामाय तद्वदे ।। २५९.
Agni said: The procedures of Ṛg, Yajur, Sāma, and Atharva, as taught by Puṣkara, bring enjoyment and liberation when recited, and likewise through offerings to Rāma.
पुष्कर उवाच । प्रतिवेदन्तु कर्म्माणि कार्य्याणि प्रवदामि ते । प्रथमं ऋग्विधानं वै श्रृणु त्वं भुक्तिमुक्तिदम् ।। २५९.
Puṣkara said: I will tell you the prescribed actions for each Veda; first, listen to the Ṛg procedure, which grants both enjoyment and liberation.
अन्तर्ज्जले तथा होमे जपतो मनसेप्सितम् । कामं करोति गायत्री प्राणायामाद्विशेपतः ।। २५९.
Within water, during offerings, or while reciting, the Gāyatrī fulfills one's desired wishes through controlled breath.
गायत्र्या दशसाहस्रो जपो नक्ताशिनो द्विज । बहुस्नातस्य तत्रैव सर्वकल्पमनाशनः ।। २५९.
A Brahmin who recites the Gāyatrī ten thousand times, fasting at night and bathing often, achieves all prescribed results without food.
दशायुतानि जप्त्वाऽथ हविष्याशी स मुक्तिभाक् । प्रणवो हि परं ब्रह्म तज्जपः सर्वपापहा ।। २५९.
After reciting ten thousand times, eating only sacrificial food, he attains liberation; for the syllable 'praṇava' is the supreme Brahman, its recitation destroys all sins.
ओंकारशतकजप्तन्तु नाभिमात्रोदके स्थितः जलं पिवेत् स सर्वेस्तु पापैर्वै विप्रमुच्यते ।। २५९.
Reciting the syllable 'Om' a hundred times while standing in water up to the navel, then drinking the water, one is freed from all sins.
मात्रात्रयं त्रयो वेदास्त्रयो देवास्त्रयोऽग्नयः । महाव्याहृतयः सप्त लोका होमोऽखिलाघहा ।। २५९.
Three measures, three Vedas, three gods, three fires, the seven great utterances, and the seven worlds—offering destroys all sins.
गायत्री परमा जाप्या महाव्याहृतयस्तथा । अन्तर्ज्जले तथा रामप्रोक्तश्चैवाघमर्षणः ।। २५९.
The Gāyatrī is supreme for recitation, as are the great utterances; within water, as taught by Rāma, is also the aghamarṣaṇa hymn.
अग्निमीले पुरोहितं सूक्तोऽयं वह्निदैवतः । शिरसा धारयन् वह्निं यो जपेत्परिवत्सरम् ।। २५९.
The hymn 'Agnim īle purohitaṃ' is dedicated to the fire deity; whoever recites it for a year, bearing fire on his head, attains its result.
होमं त्रिषवणं भैक्ष्यमनग्निज्चवलनञ्चरेत् । अतः परमृचः सप्त वाय्वाद्या याः प्रकीर्त्तिताः ।। २५९.
He should perform the threefold offering, beg for alms, and avoid fireless food; thereafter, the seven Ṛg verses beginning with wind are to be recited as prescribed.
ता जपन् प्रयतो नित्यमिष्टान् कामान् समश्नुते । मेधाकामो जपेन्नित्यं सदसन्यमितित्यृचम् ।। २५९.
Reciting these with devotion daily, one attains desired enjoyments; one seeking intelligence should always recite the 'sadasan yam iti' verse.
अन्वयो यन्निमाः प्रोक्ताः नवर्चो मृत्युनाशनाः । शुनःशेफमृषिं बद्धः सन्निरुद्धोऽथ वा२ जपेत् ।। २५९.
The sequence and meanings taught are nine verses that destroy death; one should recite them, whether bound or restrained, to the sage Śunaḥśepa.
मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो गदी वाप्यगदो भवेत् । य इच्छेच्छाश्वतं कामं मित्रं प्राज्ञं पुरन्दरं ।। २५९.
One is freed from all sins, whether afflicted or not, who desires the eternal, the beloved, the wise friend, Purandara.
ऋग्भिः षोड़शभिः कुर्य्यादिन्द्रस्येति दिने दिने । हिहण्यस्तूपमित्येतज्जपन् शत्रून् प्रबाधते ।। २५९.
By reciting the sixteen Ṛgvedic verses for Indra each day, and repeating 'hihaṇyastūpam', one overcomes enemies.
क्षेमी भवति चाध्वानो ये ते पन्था जपन् नरः । रौद्रीभिः षड्भिरीशानं स्तूयाद् यो वै दिने दिने ।। २५९.
A man who recites the six fierce hymns to Īśāna daily becomes secure on his journeys along those paths.
चरुं वा कल्पयेद्रौद्रं तस्यशान्तिः पराभवेत् । उदित्युदन्तमादित्यमुपतिष्ठन् दिने दिने ।। २५९.
Or, by preparing a fierce oblation, he attains supreme peace, worshipping the rising and setting sun each day.
क्षिपेज्जलाञ्जलीन् सप्त मनोदुःखविनाशनं । द्विषन्तमित्यथार्द्धर्च्चं यद्विप्रान्तं जपन् स्मरेत् ।। २५९.
He should offer seven handfuls of water, which destroys mental sorrow, and, reciting 'dviṣantam' and half a verse, remember what the sages have taught.
आगस्कृत् सप्तरात्रेण विद्वेषमधिगच्छति । आरोग्यकामी रोगी वा प्रस्कन्नस्योत्तमं जपेत् ।। २५९.
One who has committed a transgression attains reconciliation within seven nights; whether seeking health or afflicted, he should recite the supreme mantra for the fallen.
उत्तमस्तस्य चार्द्धर्च्चो जपेद्वै विविधासने । उदयत्यायुरक्ष्यय्यं तेजो मध्यन्दिने जपेत् ।। २५९.
He should recite the best half-verse in various postures; at sunrise, he gains undiminishing life and energy by reciting at midday.
अस्तं प्रतिगते सूर्य्ये द्विषन्तं प्रतिबाधते । न वयश्चेति सूक्तानि जपन् शत्रून्नियच्छति ।। २५९.
When the sun sets, reciting 'dviṣantam' repels adversaries; reciting the hymns 'na vayaś' restrains enemies.
. एकाद्श सुपर्णस्य सर्व्वकामान्विनिर्द्दिशेत् । आद्यात्मिकी कइत्येता जपन्मोक्षमवाप्नुयात् ।। २५९.
By reciting the eleven suparṇa hymns, all desires are fulfilled; reciting these as pertaining to the self, one attains liberation.
आ नो भद्रा इत्यनेन दीर्घमायुरबाप्नुयात् । त्वं सीमेति च सूक्तेन नवं पश्येन्निशाकरं ।। २५९.
By reciting 'ā no bhadrā', one attains long life; by the hymn 'tvaṃ sīma', one beholds the new moon.
