अश्वत्थामास्त्रनिर्द्दग्धं जीवयामास वै हरिः। उत्तरायास्ततो गर्भं स परीक्षिदभून्नृपः
Hari revived the prince in Uttarā’s womb, scorched by Aśvatthāman’s weapon; thus, Parīkṣit became king.
कृतवर्म्मा कृपो द्रौणिस्त्रयो मुक्तास्ततो रणात् । पाण्डवाः सात्यकिः कृष्णः सप्त मुक्ता न चापरे
Kṛtavarman, Kṛpa, and the son of Droṇa—these three escaped from the battle; the Pāṇḍavas, Sātyaki, and Kṛṣṇa—seven in all—survived, and no others.
स्त्रियश्चार्त्ताः समाश्वास्य भीमाद्यैः स युधिष्ठिरः । संस्कृत्य प्रहतान् वीरान् दत्तोदकधनादिकः
Yudhiṣṭhira, together with Bhīma and the others, comforted the grieving women, performed the rites for the fallen heroes, and offered water and wealth as due.
भीष्माच्छान्तनवाच्छ्रुत्वा धर्म्मान् सर्वांश्च शान्तिदान् । राजधर्म्मान्मोक्षधर्न्मान्दानधर्म्मान् नृपोऽभवत्
Hearing all the teachings of righteousness and peace from Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, the king learned the duties of kings, liberation, and charity.
अश्वमेधे ददौ दानं ब्राह्मणेभ्योरिमर्द्दनः। श्रुत्वार्जुनान्मौषलेयं यादवानाञ्च सङ्क्षयम्
The subduer of enemies performed the Aśvamedha sacrifice, giving gifts to the brāhmaṇas; hearing from Arjuna of the destruction of the Yādavas by the club.
अग्निरुवाच युधिष्ठिरे तु राज्यस्थे आश्रमादाश्रमान्तरम्। धृतराष्ट्रो वनमगाद् गान्धारी च पृथा द्विच
Agnī said: When Yudhiṣṭhira was established in the kingdom, Dhṛtarāṣṭra went to the forest, as did Gāndhārī and Pṛthā, each from their own hermitage.
विदुरस्त्वग्निना दग्धो वनजेन दिवङ्गतः। एवं विष्णुर्भुवो भारमहरद्दानवादिकम्
Vidura, burned by the fire of the forest, departed to heaven; thus Viṣṇu removed the burden of the earth, including the demons.
धर्म्मायाधर्म्मनाशाय निमित्तीकृत्य पाण्डवान्। स विप्रशापव्याजेन मुषलेनाहरत् कुलम्
For the sake of righteousness and the destruction of unrighteousness, making the Pāṇḍavas his instrument, he, under the pretext of a brāhmaṇa’s curse, destroyed the clan with a club.
यादवानां भारकरं वज्रं राज्येभ्यषेचयत्। देवादेशात् प्रभासे स देहं त्यक्त्वा स्वयं हरिः
He appointed Vajra, the burden-bearer of the Yādavas, to the kingdoms; by the command of the gods, Hari himself abandoned his body at Prabhāsa.
इन्द्रलोके ब्रह्मलोके पूज्यते स्वर्गवासिभिः। बलभद्रोनन्तमूर्त्तिः पातालस्वर्गमीयिवान्
In the realms of Indra and Brahmā, he is worshipped by the dwellers of heaven; Balabhadra, of infinite form, went to the netherworld and heaven.
अविनाशी हरिर्देवो ध्यानिभिद्धर्येय एव सः। विना तं द्वारकास्थानं प्लावयामास सागरः
Hari, the imperishable god, is the same as the one perceived by meditators; without him, the ocean flooded the city of Dvārakā.
संस्कृत्य यादवान् पार्थो दत्तोदकधनादिकः। स्त्रियोष्टावक्रशापेन भार्य्या विष्णोश्च याः स्थिताः
Having performed the rites for the Yādavas, Pārtha offered water and wealth; by the curse of the crooked woman, the wives of Viṣṇu remained.
पुनस्तच्छापतो नीता गोपालैर्लगुडायुधैः। अर्जुनं हि तिरस्कृत्य पार्थः शोकञ्चकार ह
Again, because of that curse, they were seized by cowherds armed with clubs; having failed to protect them, Arjuna was overcome with grief.
व्यासेनाश्वासितो मेने बलं मे कृष्णासन्निधौ। हस्तिनापुरमागत्य पार्थः सर्वं न्यवेदयत्
Consoled by Vyāsa, he thought, ‘My strength was due to Kṛṣṇa’s presence’; coming to Hastināpura, Pārtha reported everything.
युधिष्ठिराय स भ्रात्रे पालकाय नृणान्तदा। तद्धनुस्तानि चास्त्राणिस रथस्ते च वाजिनः
He gave to his brother Yudhiṣṭhira, the protector of men, his bow, those weapons, his chariot, and his horses.
विना कृष्णेन तन्नष्टं दानञ्चाश्रोत्रिये यथा। तच्छ्रुत्वा धर्म्मराजस्तु राज्ये स्थाप्य परीक्षितम्
Without Kṛṣṇa, all that was lost, and the gifts were given to worthy brāhmaṇas; hearing this, King Dharma established Parīkṣit on the throne.
प्रस्थानं प्रस्थितो धीमान् द्रौपद्या भ्रातृभिः सह। संसारनित्यतां ज्ञात्वा जपन्नष्टशतं हरेः
The wise one set out, accompanied by Draupadi and his brothers; knowing the impermanence of worldly existence, he recited the lost hundred names of Hari.
महापथे तु पतिता द्रौपदी सहदेवकः। नकुलः फाल्गुनो भीमो राजा शोकपरायणः
On the great path, Draupadi, Sahadeva, Nakula, Phalguna, and Bhima fell; the king was absorbed in sorrow.
इन्द्रानीतरयारूढः सानुजः स्वर्गमाप्तवान्। दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनादींश्च वासुदेवं च हर्षितः
Carried by Indra's chariot, he, with his brothers, attained heaven; seeing Duryodhana and others, and also Vasudeva, he was delighted.
अग्निरुवाच वक्ष्ये बुद्धावतारञ्च पठतः श्रृण्वतोर्थदम्। पुरा देवासुरे युद्धे देत्यैर्द्देवाः पपाजिताः
Agni said: I will speak of the descent of wisdom, which is fruitful for those who recite and listen; formerly, in the battle between gods and demons, the gods were defeated by the demons.
रक्ष रक्षेति शरणं वदन्तो जग्मुरीश्वरम्। मायामोहस्वरूपोसौ शुद्धोदनसुतोऽभवत्
Crying 'Protect, protect!' and seeking refuge, they approached the Lord; he, in the form of illusion and delusion, became the son of Shuddhodana.
मोहयामास दैत्यांस्तांस्त्याजिता वेदधर्मकम्। ते च बौद्धा बभूवुर्हि तेभ्योन्ये वेदवर्जिताः
He bewildered those demons, causing them to abandon Vedic religion; they became Buddhists, and others among them forsook the Vedas.
आर्हतः सोऽभवत् पश्चादार्हतानकरोत् परान्। एवं पाषण्डिनो जाता वेदधर्म्मादिवर्जिताः
Afterwards, he became Arhata, and made others Arhatas; thus, heretics arose, devoid of the original Vedic religion.
नारकार्हं कर्म चक्रुर्ग्रहीष्यन्त्यधमादपि। सर्वे कलियुगान्ते तु भविष्यन्ति च सङ्कराः
They performed actions leading to hell, and will accept even the lowest; at the end of Kali Yuga, all will become mixed.
दस्यवः शीलहीनाश्च वेदो वाजसनेयकः। दश पञ्च च शाखा वै प्रमाणेन भविष्यति
Thieves lacking virtue, and the Vajasaneya Veda, will remain; ten and five branches will exist as the measure.
धर्म्मकञ्चुकसंवीता अधर्मरुचयस्तथा। मानुपान् भक्षयिष्यन्ति म्लेच्छाः पार्थिवरूपिणः
Clad in the cloak of dharma, yet delighting in adharma, they will eat meat and drink, those foreigners in the form of kings.
कल्की विष्णुयशः पुत्रो याज्ञवल्क्यपुरोहितः। उत्सादयिष्यति म्लेच्छान् गृहीतास्त्रः कृतायुधः
Kalki, son of Vishnuyasha, with Yajnavalkya as priest, will destroy the foreigners, having taken up weapons and arms.
स्थापयिष्यति मर्यादां चातुर्वर्ण्ये यथोचिताम्। आश्रमेषु च सर्वेषु प्रजाः सद्धर्म्मवर्त्मनि
He will establish proper boundaries for the four classes, and for all the orders, the people on the path of true dharma.
कल्किरूपं परित्यज्य हरिः स्वर्गं गमिष्यति। ततः कृतयुगन्नाम पुरावत् सम्भविष्यति
Abandoning the form of Kalki, Hari will go to heaven; then the age called Krita, as before, will arise.
वर्णाश्रमाश्च धर्मेषु स्वेषु स्थास्यन्ति सत्तम। एवं सर्वेषु कल्पेषु सर्वमन्वन्तरेषु च
The classes and orders will remain established in their own dharmas, O noble one; thus, in all cycles and all Manvantaras.
