सधौम्यो द्रौपदीषष्ठस्ततः प्रायाद्विराटकम्। कङ्को द्विजो ह्यविज्ञातो राजा भीमोथ सूपकृत्
With Dhaumya and Draupadi as the sixth, they went to the court of Virata; Kanka, the Brahmin, remained unknown, Bhima became the cook for the king.
बृहन्नलार्जुनो भार्या सैरिन्ध्री यमजौ तथा। अन्यनाम्ना भीमसेनः कीचकञ्चाबधीन्निशि
Arjuna was called Brihannala, his wife was Sairindhri; Yama's son was also there, and Bhimasena, under another name, killed Kichaka at night.
द्रौपदीं हर्त्तुकामं तमर्जुनश्चाजयत् कुरून्। कुर्वतो गोग्रहादींश्च तैर्ज्ञाताः पाण्डवा अथ
Arjuna defeated those who wished to abduct Draupadi and the Kurus; those who seized cows and other things, the Pandavas were then recognized by them.
सुभद्रा कृष्णभगिनी अर्जुनात्समजीजनत्। अभिमन्युन्ददौ तस्मै विराटश्चोत्तरां सुताम्
Subhadra, Krishna's sister, bore a son to Arjuna; to him, Abhimanyu, Virata gave his daughter Uttara.
सप्ताक्षौहिणीश आसीद्धर्म्मराजो रणाय सः। कृष्णो दूतोब्रवीद् गत्वा दुर्योधनममर्षणम्
The king of Dharma had seven divisions for battle; Krishna went as envoy and spoke to Duryodhana, who was unyielding.
एकादशक्षौहिणीशं नृपं दुर्योधनं तदा। युधिष्ठिरायार्द्धराज्यं देहि ग्रामांश्च पञ्च वा
At that time, king Duryodhana had eleven divisions; Krishna asked him to give Yudhishthira half the kingdom, or at least five villages.
युध्यस्व वा वचः श्रुत्वा कृष्णमाह सुयोधनः। भूसूच्यग्रं न दास्यामि योत्स्ये सङ्ग्रहणोद्यतः
Hearing these words, Suyodhana replied to Krishna: 'I will not give even a needlepoint of land; I am ready for battle.'
विश्वरूपन्दर्शयित्वा अधृष्यं विदुरार्च्चितः । प्रागाद्युधिष्ठिरं प्राह योधयैनं सुयोधनम्
Having shown his universal form, honored by Vidura, Krishna went to Yudhishthira and said: 'Fight Suyodhana.'
कुरुपाण्डवसङ्ग्रामवर्णनम् । अग्निरुवाच यौधिष्ठिरी दौर्योधनी कुरुक्षेत्रं ययौ चमूः। भीष्मद्रोणादिकान् हृष्ट्वा नायुध्यत गुरुनिति
Description of the battle between the Kurus and Pandavas. Agni said: The army of Yudhishthira and Duryodhana went to Kurukshetra; Bhishma, Drona and others rejoiced, but did not fight, saying they were teachers.
पार्थं ह्युवाच भगवान्नशोच्या भीष्ममुख्यकाः। शरीराणि विनाशीनि न शरीरी विनश्यति
The blessed Lord said to Partha: 'Those led by Bhishma are not to be grieved for; bodies are perishable, but the soul does not perish.'
अयमात्मा परं ब्रह्म अहं ब्रह्मास्मि विद्धि तम् । सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो योगी राजधर्म्मं प्रपालय
This self is the supreme Brahman; know that 'I am Brahman.' The yogi remains equal in success and failure; uphold the royal duty.
कृष्णोक्तोथार्जुनोऽयुध्यद्रथस्थो वाद्यशब्दवान्। भीष्मः सेनापतिरभूदादौ दौर्योधने बले
As Krishna spoke, Arjuna fought from his chariot, sounding his conch; Bhishma became the commander of the army at the start of Duryodhana's force.
पाण्डवानां शिखण्डी च तयोर्युद्धं बभूव ह। धार्त्तराष्ट्राः पाण्डवांश्च जघ्नुर्युद्धे सभीष्मकाः
Among the Pandavas, Shikhandi also fought; there was battle between the two sides. The sons of Dhritarashtra and the Pandavas, along with Bhishma, struck each other in battle.
धार्त्तराष्ट्रान् शिखण्ड्याद्याः पाण्डवा जघ्नुराहेवे। देवासुरसमं युद्धं कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः
The Pandavas, led by Shikhandi, struck down the sons of Dhritarashtra; the battle between the Kuru and Pandava armies was like that of gods and demons.
बभूव स्वः स्थदेवानां पश्यतां प्रीतिबर्द्धनम्। भीष्मोस्त्रैः पाण्डवं सैन्यं दशाहोभिर्न्यपातयत्
It became a spectacle for the gods in heaven, increasing their joy; Bhishma, with his weapons, brought down the Pandava army in ten days.
दशमे ह्यर्जुनौ बाणैर्भिष्मं वीरं ववर्ष ह। शिखण्डी द्रुपदोत्तोऽस्त्रैर्ववर्ष जलदो यथा
On the tenth day, Arjuna showered arrows upon the heroic Bhishma; Shikhandi, born of Drupada, rained weapons like a cloud.
हस्त्यश्वरथपादातमन्योन्यास्त्रनिपातितम् । भीष्मः स्वच्छन्दमृत्युश्च युद्धमार्गं प्रदर्श्य च
Bhishma, who had chosen his own time of death, showed the path of battle, as elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers fell by each other's weapons.
वसूक्तो वसुलोकाय शरशय्यागतः स्थितः। उत्तरायणमीक्षंश्च ध्यायन् विष्णुंस्तुवन् स्थितः
Praised by the Vasus, Bhishma lay upon a bed of arrows for the world of the Vasus, watching for the northern solstice, meditating and praising Vishnu.
दुर्योधने तु शोकार्त्ते द्रोणः सेनापतिस्त्वभूत्। पाण्डवे हर्षिते सैन्ये धृष्टद्युम्नश्चमूपतिः
When Duryodhana was afflicted with grief, Drona became the commander of the army; as the Pandava army rejoiced, Dhrishtadyumna became its leader.
तयोर्युद्धं बभूवोग्रं यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम्। विराटद्रुपदाद्याश्च निमग्ना द्रोणसागरे
A fierce battle arose between them, increasing the realm of Yama; Virata, Drupada, and others were submerged in the ocean of Drona.
दौर्योधनी महासेना हस्त्यश्वरथपत्तिनी। धृष्टद्युम्नाधिपतिता द्रोणः काल इवाबभौ
The great army of Duryodhana, with elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry, was commanded by Dhrishtadyumna; Drona appeared like Time itself.
हतोश्वत्थामा चेत्युक्ते द्रोणः शस्त्राणि चात्यजत्। धृष्टद्युम्नशराक्रान्तः पतितः स महीतले
When it was said that Ashvatthama was slain, Drona laid down his weapons; struck by the arrows of Dhrishtadyumna, he fell to the earth.
पञ्चमेहनि दुर्द्धर्षः सर्वक्षत्रं प्रमथ्य च। दुर्योधने तु शोकार्ते कर्णः सेनापतिस्त्वभूत्
On the fifth day, the unconquerable Karna, having crushed all the Kshatriyas, became the commander of the army when Duryodhana was stricken with grief.
अर्जुनः पाण्डवानाञ्च तयोर्युद्धं बभूव ह। शस्त्रशस्त्रि महारौद्रं देवासुररणोपमम्
Arjuna and the Pandavas fought against him; the battle of weapons was exceedingly fierce, like the war between gods and demons.
कर्णार्जुनाख्ये सङ्प्रामे कर्णोरीनवधीच्छरैः। द्वितीयेहनि कर्णस्तु अर्जुनेन निपातितः
In the conflict between Karna and Arjuna, Karna wounded Arjuna with arrows; on the second day, Karna was struck down by Arjuna.
शल्यो दिनार्द्धं युयुधे ह्यबधीत्तं युधिष्ठिरः। युयुधे भीमसेनेन हतसैन्यः सयोधनः
Shalya fought for half a day, but was slain by Yudhishthira in battle; with his army destroyed, he fought Bhimasena and was killed along with Duryodhana.
बहून् हत्वा नरादींश्च भीमसेनमथाब्रबीत्। गदया प्रहरन्तं तु भीमस्तन्तु न्यपातयत्
After slaying many men and others, Bhimasena spoke; as he struck with his mace, Bhima brought him down.
गदयान्यानुजांस्तस्य तस्मिन्नष्टादशेहनि। रात्रौ सषुप्तञ्च बलं पाण्डवानां न्यपातयत्
With his mace, he struck the remaining brothers on the eighteenth day; at night, he brought down the sleeping army of the Pandavas.
अक्षौहिणीप्रमाणन्तु अश्वत्थामा महाबलः। द्रौपदेयान् सापञ्चालान् धृष्टद्युन्नञ्च सोऽवधीत्
Aśvatthāman, mighty in strength, slew the sons of Draupadī, the Pāñcālas, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, equal to an army division in number.
पुत्रहीनां द्रौपदीं तां रुदन्तीमर्जुनस्ततः। शिरोमणिं तु जग्राह ऐषिकास्त्रेण तस्य च
Then Arjuna took the radiant jewel from Aśvatthāman with the missile of reeds, as Draupadī, bereft of her sons, wept.
