हरिमभ्यर्च्य संस्तुत्य स्यादमङ्गल्यनाशनं । द्वितीयन्तु ततो दृष्ट्वा विरुद्धं प्रविशेद् गृहं ।। २३०.
Having worshipped and praised Hari, the destruction of inauspiciousness is obtained; if a second such (inauspicious sign) is seen, one should enter the house by a different way.
श्वेताः सुमनसः श्रेष्ठाः पूर्णकुम्भो महोत्तमः । मांसं मत्स्या दूरशब्दा वृद्ध एकः पशुस्त्वजः ।। २३०.
White flowers are best, a full water-pot is most excellent; meat, fish, distant sounds, an old man alone, and an animal without skin—
गावस्तुरङ्गमा नागा देवाश्च ज्वलितोऽनलः । दूर्वार्द्रगोमयं वेश्या स्वर्णरूप्यञ्च रत्नकं ।। २३०.
Cows, horses, elephants, gods, blazing fire, fresh grass, wet cow dung, a courtesan, gold, silver, and gems—
वचासिद्धार्थकौषध्यो मुद्र आयुधखड्गकं । छत्रं पीठं राजलिङ्गं शवं रुदितवर्जितं ।। २३०.
Words, medicines that fulfill their purpose, a seal, weapons and swords, an umbrella, a seat, royal insignia, a corpse not accompanied by weeping—
फलं घृतं दधि पयो अक्षतादर्शमाक्षिकं । शङ्ख इक्षुः शुभं वाक्पं भक्तवादित्रगीतकं ।। २३०.
Fruit, ghee, curds, milk, unbroken rice, a mirror, honey, a conch, sugarcane, auspicious speech, food, musical instruments, and singing—
गम्भीरमेघस्तनितं तडित्तुष्टिश्च मानसी । एकतं सर्वलिङ्गानि मनसस्तुष्टिरेकतः ।। २३०.
The deep rumbling of clouds, the satisfaction of the mind at lightning—these are all auspicious signs; but the satisfaction of the mind is the best of all.
पुष्कर उवाच तिष्ठतो गमने प्रश्ने पुरुषस्य शुभाशुभं । निवेदयन्ति शकुना देशस्य नगरस्य च ।। २३१.
Puṣkara said: While a person is standing, setting out, or being questioned, omens reveal the auspicious or inauspicious, for the land and the city as well.
सर्वः पापफलो दीप्तो निर्द्दिष्टो दैवचिन्तकैः । शान्तः शुभफलश्चैव दैवज्ञैः समुदाहृतः ।। २३१.
All omens that are blazing are declared by those who ponder fate to yield evil results; those that are calm are said by astrologers to bring good results.
षट्प्रकारा विनिर्दिष्टाः शकुनानाञ्च दीप्तयः । वेलादिग्देशकरणरुतजातिविभेदतः ।। २३१.
Six kinds of brilliance are described for omens, distinguished by time, place, action, sound, and type.
पूर्वा पूर्वा च विज्ञेया सा तेषां बलवत्तरा । दिवाचरो रात्रिचरस्तथा रात्रौ दिवाचरः ।। २३१.
Each preceding one is to be known as stronger; a day-wandering omen at night, or a night-wandering one by day, is especially powerful.
क्रूरेषु दीप्ता विज्ञेया ऋक्षलग्नग्रहादिषु । धूमिता सा तु विज्ञेया याङ्गमिष्यति भास्करः ।। २३१.
In cruel signs, the bright omen is to be known at the rising of the constellation, planet, or similar; the smoky omen is to be recognized when the sun is about to move.
यस्यां स्थितः सा ज्वलिता मुक्ता चाङ्गारिणी मता । एतास्तिस्रः स्मृता दीप्ताः पञ्च शान्तास्तथापराः ।। २३१.
When it is present, the omen is blazing; when released, it is considered fiery. These three are remembered as bright, and five others are likewise peaceful.
दीप्तायान्दिशि दिग्दीप्तं शकुनं परिकीर्त्तितं । ग्रामेऽरण्या वने ग्राम्यास्तथा निन्दितपादपः ।। २३१.
When the omen is bright in a direction, it is called a directional omen; in a village, forest, or wilderness, it is domestic, and so too when it is on a condemned tree.
देशे चैवाशुभे ज्ञेयो देशदीप्तो द्विजोत्तमः । क्रियादीप्तो विनिर्द्दिष्टः स्वजात्यनुचितक्रियः ।। २३१.
In an inauspicious place, the place-bright omen is to be known, O best of twice-born; the ritual-bright omen is declared when an act is improper for one's own kind.
रुतदीप्तश्च कथितो भिन्नभैरवनिस्वनः । जातिदीप्तस्तथा ज्ञेयः केवलं मांसभोजनः ।। २३१.
The sound-bright omen is described as a discordant, terrifying cry; the species-bright omen is to be known as solely meat-eating.
दीप्ताच्छान्तो विनिर्दिष्टः सर्वैर्भेदैः प्रयत्नतः । मिश्रैर्मिश्रो विनिर्दिष्टस्तस्य वाच्यं फलाफलं ।। २३१.
From the bright omen, the peaceful is determined with all distinctions carefully; the mixed is declared from mixed omens, and its result, good or bad, must be spoken.
गोश्वोष्ट्रगर्द्दभश्वानः सारिका गृहगोधिका । चटका भासकूर्माद्याः कथिता ग्रामवासिनः ।। २३१.
Cows, horses, camels, donkeys, dogs, starlings, house lizards, sparrows, cranes, turtles, and others are said to be dwellers of villages.
मार्जारकुक्कुटौ ग्राम्यौ तौ चैव वनगोचरौ । तयोर्भवति विज्ञानं नित्यंक वै रूपभेदतः ।। २३१.
Cats and chickens are domestic, yet also roam the wild; their recognition always depends on differences in form.
गोकर्णशिखिचक्राह्वखरहारीतवायसाः । कुलाहकुक्कुभश्येनफेरुखञ्जनवानराः ।। २३१.
Cattle-eared, peacocks, chakras, donkeys, parrots, crows, kulaha birds, kukubha, hawks, pheruka, anjana, and monkeys.
शतघ्नचटकश्यामचासश्येनकपिञ्जलाः । तित्तिरिः शतपत्रञ्च कपोतश्च तथा त्रयः ।। २३१.
Shataghnas, sparrows, blackbirds, crows, hawks, francolins, partridges, butterflies, and three kinds of pigeons.
खञ्जरीटकदात्यूहशुकराजीवकुक्कुटाः । भारद्वाजश्च सारङ्ग इति ज्ञेया दिवाचराः ।। २३१.
Khanjarita, dātyūha, wild boar, jīva-kukkuṭa, bhāradvāja, and sāraṅga are to be known as day-roaming creatures.
वागुर्युलूकशरभक्रौञ्चाः शशककच्छपाः । लोमासिकाः पिङ्गलिकाः कथिता रात्रिगोचराः ।। २३१.
Vāguryu, owls, sharabha, cranes, hares, turtles, hairy ones, and reddish ones are described as night-roaming.
हंसाश्च मृगमार्जारनकुलर्क्षभुजङ्गमाः । वृक्कारिसिंहव्याघ्रोष्ट्रग्रामशूकरमानुषाः ।। २३१.
Swans, deer, cats, mongooses, bears, snakes, wolves, lions, tigers, camels, village boars, and humans.
श्वाविद्वृषभगोमायुवृककोकिलसारसाः । तुरङ्गकौपीननरा गोधा ह्युभयचारिणः ।। २३१.
Hunting dogs, bulls, jackals, wolves, cuckoos, cranes, horses, kaupīna-men, lizards are both day and night roamers.
बलप्रस्थानयोः सर्वे पुरस्तात्सङ्घचारिणः । जथावहा विनिर्दिष्टाः पश्चान्निधनकारिणः ।। २३१.
All those who move in groups at the front during marches are designated as leaders; those who carry burdens are declared to bring death from behind.
गृहाद्गम्य यदा चासो व्याहरेत् पुरतः स्थितः । नृपावमानं वदति वामः कलहभोजने ।। २३१.
When a crow comes from the house and cries out while standing in front, it speaks of the king's insult, or of strife at a meal, if it is on the left.
याने तद्दर्शनं शस्तं सव्यमङ्गस्य वाप्यथ । चौरैर्मोषमथाख्याति मयूरो भिन्ननिस्वनः ।। २३१.
In a vehicle, its sight is auspicious, whether on the left or right side; the peacock reveals theft by robbers when its cry is discordant.
प्रयातस्याग्रतो राम मृगः प्राणहरो भवेत् । ऋक्षाखुजम्बुकव्याघ्रसिंहमार्जारगर्दभाः ।। २३१.
When one departs, O Rāma, if a deer appears ahead, it brings death; so too bears, boars, jackals, tigers, lions, cats, and donkeys.
प्रतिलोमास्तथा राम खरश्च विकृतस्वनः वामः कपिञ्जलः श्रेष्ठस्तथा दक्षिणसंस्थितः ।। २३१.
Similarly, O Rāma, the pratiloma (reverse) bird, the khara with harsh voice, the left-sided kapiñjala, and the best one situated on the right are described.
पृष्ठतो निन्दितफलस्तित्तिरिस्तु न शस्यते । एणा वराहाः पृषता वामा भूत्वा तु दक्षिणाः ।। २३१.
The tittiri bird, whose fruit is condemned, is not praised when seen from behind; but the ena, varāha, and pṛṣata, when coming from the left and then the right, are considered auspicious.
