शरीरस्फुरणे धन्ये तथा सुस्वप्नदर्शने ।। २२८.
When there is auspicious twitching of the body, or when one sees a favorable dream.
निमित्ते शकुने धन्ये जाते शत्रुपुरं व्रजेत् । पदातिनागबहुलां सेनां प्रावृषि योजयेत् ।। २२८.
When an auspicious omen or bird appears, one should enter the enemy's city; in the rainy season, one should deploy an army abundant in infantry and elephants.
सेना पदातिबहुला शत्रून् जयति सर्वदा । अङ्गदक्षिणभागे तु शस्तं प्रस्फुरणं भवेत् ।। २२८.
An army rich in infantry always conquers enemies; twitching on the right side of the limb is auspicious.
न शस्तन्तु तथा वामे पृष्ठस्य हृदयस्य च । लाञ्छनं पिटकञ्चैव विज्ञेयं स्फुरणं तथा ।। २२८.
But it is not auspicious on the left side, nor on the back or the heart; a mark or swelling, as well as twitching, should be recognized.
पुष्कर उवाच स्वप्नं शुभाशुभं वक्ष्ये दुःस्वप्नहरणन्तथा । नाभिं विनान्यत्र गात्रे तृणवृक्षसमुद्भवः ।। २२९.
Puṣkara said: I will explain dreams, auspicious and inauspicious, as well as the removal of bad dreams; except for the navel, wherever grass or trees arise on the body.
चूर्णनं मूद्र्ध्नि कांस्यानां मुण्डनं नग्नता तथा । मलिनाम्बरधारित्वमभ्यङ्गः पङ्कदिग्धता ।। २२९.
Grinding on the head, shaving of copper vessels, being shaven, nakedness, wearing dirty garments, oiling, and being smeared with mud.
उच्चात् प्रपतनञ्चैव विवाहो गीतमेव च । तन्त्रीवाद्यविनोदश्च दालारोहणमेव च ।। २२९.
Falling from a height, marriage, singing, playing stringed instruments for amusement, and climbing a branch.
अर्जनं पद्मलोहानां सर्पाणामथ मारणं । रक्तपुष्पद्रुमाणाञ्च चण्डालस्य तथैव च ।। २२९.
Acquiring lotuses or copper, killing serpents, blood-red flowering trees, and likewise, contact with a caṇḍāla.
मातुः प्रवेशो जठरे चितारोहणमेव च । शक्रध्वजाभिपतनं पतनं शशिसूर्य्ययोः ।। २२९.
Entering the mother's womb, ascending the funeral pyre, falling upon Indra's banner, and falling upon the moon or sun.
दिव्यान्तरीक्षभौमानामुत्पातानाञ्च दर्शनं । देवद्विजातिभूपानां गुरूणाङ्कोप एव च ।। २२९.
Seeing portents among the divine, aerial, or earthly beings, and the anger of gods, twice-borns, kings, or teachers.
तन्त्रीवाद्यविहीनानां वाद्यानामपि वादनं ।। २२९.
Playing instruments without stringed accompaniment, or playing instruments that lack music.
स्त्रोतोवहाधोगमनं स्नानं गोमयवारिणा । पङ्कोदकेन च तथा मशीतोयेन वाप्यथ ।। २२९.
Descending into a stream, bathing with cow dung water, or with muddy water, or with ink-water.
हानिश्चैव स्वगात्राणां विरेको वमनक्रिया ।। २२९.
Loss of one's own limbs, purging, or the act of vomiting.
दक्षिणाशाप्रगमनं व्याधिनाभिभवस्तथा । फलानामुपहानिश्च धातूनां भेदनं तथा ।। २२९.
Going toward the southern direction, being overcome by disease, loss of fruits, and breaking of metals.
गृहाणाञ्चैव पतनं गृहसम्मार्जनन्तथा । क्रोडा पिशाचक्रव्यादवानरान्त्यनरैरपि ।। २२९.
Falling from houses, sweeping the house, and likewise, being carried by boars, ghosts, flesh-eaters, monkeys, or outcastes—
स्रेहपानावगाहौ च रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनं । इत्यधन्यानि स्वप्नानि तेषामकथनं शुभं ।। २२९.
Drinking oil, bathing, wearing garlands stained with blood, and anointing oneself—these are inauspicious dreams; telling them to others brings good.
भूयश्च स्वपनं तद्वत् कार्य्यं स्नानं द्विजार्च्चनं । तिलैर्होमो हरिब्रह्मशिवार्कगणपूजनं ।। २२९.
After such dreams, one should bathe, worship the twice-born, offer oblations with sesame seeds, and worship Hari, Brahmā, Śiva, the Sun, and Gaṇa.
तथा स्तुतिप्रपठनं पुंसूक्तादिजपस्तथा । स्वप्नास्तु प्रथमे यामे५ संवत्सरविपाकिनः ।। २२९.
Likewise, reciting hymns and chanting Purusha Sūkta and similar texts; dreams seen in the first watch of the night bear fruit after a year.
षड्भिर्मासैर्द्वितीये तु त्रिभिर्मासैस्त्रियामिकाः । चतुर्थे त्वर्द्धमासेन दशाहादरुणोदये ।। २२९.
Those seen in the second watch come to fruition in six months; in the third, in three months; in the fourth, in half a month, or by ten days at sunrise.
एकस्यामथ चेद्रात्रौ शुभं वा यदि वाऽशुभं । पश्चाद् दृष्टस्तु यस्तत्र तस्य पाकं विनिर्दिशेत् ।। २२९.
If, in a single night, both auspicious and inauspicious dreams are seen, the result is determined by the one seen last.
तस्मात्तु शोभने स्वप्ने पश्चात्स्वापो न शस्यते । शैलप्रासादनागाश्ववृषभारोहणं हितं ।। २२९.
Therefore, after seeing an auspicious dream, sleeping again is not recommended; ascending mountains, palaces, elephants, horses, or bulls is favorable.
द्रुमाणां स्वेतपुष्पाणां गगने च तथा द्विज । द्रुमतृणोद्भवो नाभौ तथा च बहुबाहुता ।। २२९.
Seeing white-flowered trees, or trees in the sky, or trees and grass growing from the navel, or having many arms—
तथा च बहुशीर्षत्वं पलितोद्बव एव च । सुशुक्लमाल्यधारित्वं सुशुक्लाम्बरधारिता ।। २२९.
Or having many heads, or the sudden appearance of gray hair, or wearing pure white garlands and garments—
चन्द्रार्कताराग्रहणं परिमार्जनमेव च । शक्रध्वजालिङ्गनञ्च ध्वजोच्छ्रायक्रिया तथा ।। २२९.
Seizing the moon, sun, or stars, sweeping, embracing Indra’s banner, or raising a banner—
भूम्यम्बुधाराग्रहणं६ शत्रूणाञ्चैव विक्रिया । जयो विवादे द्युते च सङ्ग्रामे च तथा द्विज ।। २२९.
Taking hold of the earth or a stream of water, the defeat of enemies, victory in disputes, gambling, or battle—
भक्षणञ्चार्ट्रमांसानाम्पायसस्य च भक्षणं । दर्शनं रुधिरस्यापि स्नानं वा रुधिरेण च ।। २२९.
Eating goat’s flesh or rice pudding, seeing blood, or bathing in blood—
सुगरुधिरमद्यानां पानं क्षीरस्य वाप्यथ । अस्त्रैर्विचेष्टनं भूमौ निर्मलं गगनं तथा ।। २२९.
Drinking pure blood or wine, or milk; moving about on the ground with weapons, or seeing a clear sky—
मुखेन दोहनं शस्तं महिषीणां तथा गवां । सिंहीनां हस्तिनीनाञ्च बडवानां तथैव च ।। २२९.
Milking buffaloes, cows, lionesses, she-elephants, or mares with one’s mouth is auspicious.
प्रसादो देवविप्रेभ्यो गुरुभ्यश्च तथा द्विज । अम्भसा चाभिषेखस्तु गवां श्रृङ्गच्युतेन च ।। २२९.
Receiving favor from gods, Brāhmaṇas, and teachers, O twice-born, or being anointed with water or with what flows from the horns of cows—
चन्द्राद् भ्रष्टेन वा राम ज्ञेयं राकज्यप्रदं हि तत् । राज्याभिषेकश्च तथा छेदनं शिरसोऽप्यथ ।। २२९.
If one falls from the moon, O Rāma, it is known to grant sovereignty; likewise, royal consecration or even the cutting of the head—
