विष्णुनाभ्यब्जजो ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मापुत्रोऽत्रिरत्रितः। सोमः सोमाद् बुधस्तस्मादैल आसीत् पुरूरवाः
From Viṣṇu was born Brahmā; Brahmā's son was Atri, and from Atri came Soma. From Soma came Budha, from Budha Aila, and from Aila, Purūravas.
तस्मादायुस्ततो राजा नहुषोऽतो ययातिकः। ततः पुरुस्तस्य वंशे भरतोऽथ नृपः कुरुः
From him came Ayu; then King Nahuṣa, then Yayāti. From Purū, in his lineage, came Bharata, and then King Kuru.
तद्वंशे शान्तनुस्तस्माद्भीष्मो गङ्गासुतोऽनुजौ। चित्राङ्गदौ विचित्रश्च सत्यवत्याञ्च शान्तनोः
In that lineage, Śāntanu was born; from him, Bhīṣma, son of Gaṅgā, and his younger brothers, Citrāṅgada and Vicitra, and Satyavatī's son Śāntanu.
स्वर्गं गते शान्तनौ च भीष्मो भार्य्याविवर्ज्जितः। अपालयत् भ्रातृराज्यं बालश्चि त्राङ्गदो हतः
When Śāntanu went to heaven, Bhīṣma, without a wife, protected his brothers' kingdom; Citrāṅgada, still a child, was slain.
चित्राङ्गदेन द्वे कन्ये काशिराजस्य चाम्बिका। अम्बालिका च भीष्मेण आनीते विजितारिणा
Citrāṅgada brought two maidens, Ambikā and Ambālikā, daughters of the king of Kāśi; Bhīṣma, the conqueror, brought them.
भार्ये विचित्रवीर्यस्य यक्ष्मणा स दिवङ्गतः। सत्यवत्या ह्यनुमतादम्बिकायां नृपोभवत्
The wives of Vicitravīrya, after he died of consumption, with Satyavatī's consent, produced a king in Ambikā.
धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बालिकायां पाण्डुश्च व्यासतः सुतः। गान्धार्य्यां धृतराष्ट्राच्च दुर्योंधनमुखं शतम्
Dhṛtarāṣṭra was born to Ambālikā, and Pāṇḍu, son of Vyāsa. From Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Gāndhārī came a hundred sons headed by Duryodhana.
शतश्रृङ्गाश्रमपदे भार्यायोगाद् यतो मृतिः। ऋषिशापात्ततो धर्म्मात् कुन्त्यां पाण्डोर्युधिष्ठिरः
At the hermitage of Śataśṛṅga, due to lack of a wife, death occurred; from a sage's curse, Dharma begot Yudhiṣṭhira on Kuntī for Pāṇḍu.
वाताद्भीमोऽर्जुनः शक्रान्माद्र्यामश्विकुमारतः। नकुलः सहदेवश्च पाण्डुर्म्माद्रीयुतो मृतः
Bhīma was born from the wind, Arjuna from Indra; from Mādrī, the twin sons Nakula and Sahadeva were born to the horse-god. Pāṇḍu, united with Mādrī, died.
कर्णः कुन्त्यां हि कन्यायां जातो दुर्योधनाश्रितः। कुरुपाण्डवयोर्वैरन्दैवयोगाद् बभूव ह
Karna was born to Kuntī while she was a maiden; he sided with Duryodhana. The enmity between the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas arose by fate.
दुर्योधनौ जतुगृहे पाण्डवानदहत् कुधीः। दग्धागाराद्विनिष्क्रान्ता मातृषष्ठास्तु पाण्डवाः
Duryodhana, wicked-minded, burned the Pāṇḍavas in the lac house; escaping the burning house, the six Pāṇḍavas with their mother survived.
ततस्तु एकचक्रायां ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने। मुनिवेषाः स्थिताः सर्वे निहत्य वकराक्षसम्
Then, in Ekacakrā, at a brāhmin's dwelling, all stayed in the guise of ascetics, having slain the demon Vaka.
ययुः पाञ्चालविषयं द्रौपद्यास्ते स्वयम्वरे। सम्प्राप्ता बाहुवेधेन द्रौपदी पञ्चपाण्डवैः
They went to the land of the Panchalas for Draupadi's self-choice ceremony; Draupadi was won by the five Pandavas through the test of archery.
अर्द्धराज्यं ततः प्राप्ता ज्ञाता दुर्योधनादिभिः। गाण्डीवञ्च धनुर्दिव्यं पावकाद्रथमुत्तमम्
Then they obtained half the kingdom, known by Duryodhana and others; Arjuna received the divine bow Gandiva and the excellent chariot from the fire-god.
सारथिञ्चार्जुनः सङ्खये कृष्णमक्षय्यशायकान्। ब्रह्मास्त्रार्दिस्तथा द्रोणात्सर्वे शस्त्रविशारदाः
Arjuna made Krishna his charioteer in battle, with inexhaustible arrows; he received the Brahma weapon from Drona, and all were skilled in arms.
कृष्णेन सोऽर्जुनो वह्निं खाण्डवे समतर्पयत्। इन्द्रवृष्टिं वारयंश्च शरवर्षेण पाण्डवः
With Krishna, Arjuna satisfied the fire in the Khandava forest; the Pandava warded off Indra's rain with a shower of arrows.
जिता दिशः पाण्डवैश्च राज्यञ्चक्रे युधिष्ठिरः। बहुस्वर्णं राजसूयं च सेहै तं सुयोधनः
The Pandavas conquered the directions, and Yudhishthira established his rule; they performed the great Rajasuya sacrifice with much gold, and Suyodhana envied him.
भ्रात्रा दुः शासनेनोक्तः कर्णेन प्राप्तभूतिना। द्युतकार्ये शकुनिना द्यूतेन स युधिष्ठिरम्
Urged by his brother and by Karna, who had gained prosperity, Yudhishthira was challenged to a game of dice by Shakuni.
अजयत्तस्य राज्यञ्च सभास्थो माययाहसत्। अष्टाशीतिसहस्त्राणि भोजयन् पूर्ववद् द्विजान्
He lost his kingdom in the assembly, and was mocked by deceit; he continued to feed eighty-eight thousand Brahmins as before.
वने द्वादशवर्षाणि प्रतिज्ञातानि सोऽनयत्। अष्टाशीतिसहस्त्राणि भोजयन् पूर्ववद् द्विजान्
He spent twelve years in the forest as vowed; he continued to feed eighty-eight thousand Brahmins as before.
सधौम्यो द्रौपदीषष्ठस्ततः प्रायाद्विराटकम्। कङ्को द्विजो ह्यविज्ञातो राजा भीमोथ सूपकृत्
With Dhaumya and Draupadi as the sixth, they went to the court of Virata; Kanka, the Brahmin, remained unknown, Bhima became the cook for the king.
बृहन्नलार्जुनो भार्या सैरिन्ध्री यमजौ तथा। अन्यनाम्ना भीमसेनः कीचकञ्चाबधीन्निशि
Arjuna was called Brihannala, his wife was Sairindhri; Yama's son was also there, and Bhimasena, under another name, killed Kichaka at night.
द्रौपदीं हर्त्तुकामं तमर्जुनश्चाजयत् कुरून्। कुर्वतो गोग्रहादींश्च तैर्ज्ञाताः पाण्डवा अथ
Arjuna defeated those who wished to abduct Draupadi and the Kurus; those who seized cows and other things, the Pandavas were then recognized by them.
सुभद्रा कृष्णभगिनी अर्जुनात्समजीजनत्। अभिमन्युन्ददौ तस्मै विराटश्चोत्तरां सुताम्
Subhadra, Krishna's sister, bore a son to Arjuna; to him, Abhimanyu, Virata gave his daughter Uttara.
सप्ताक्षौहिणीश आसीद्धर्म्मराजो रणाय सः। कृष्णो दूतोब्रवीद् गत्वा दुर्योधनममर्षणम्
The king of Dharma had seven divisions for battle; Krishna went as envoy and spoke to Duryodhana, who was unyielding.
एकादशक्षौहिणीशं नृपं दुर्योधनं तदा। युधिष्ठिरायार्द्धराज्यं देहि ग्रामांश्च पञ्च वा
At that time, king Duryodhana had eleven divisions; Krishna asked him to give Yudhishthira half the kingdom, or at least five villages.
युध्यस्व वा वचः श्रुत्वा कृष्णमाह सुयोधनः। भूसूच्यग्रं न दास्यामि योत्स्ये सङ्ग्रहणोद्यतः
Hearing these words, Suyodhana replied to Krishna: 'I will not give even a needlepoint of land; I am ready for battle.'
विश्वरूपन्दर्शयित्वा अधृष्यं विदुरार्च्चितः । प्रागाद्युधिष्ठिरं प्राह योधयैनं सुयोधनम्
Having shown his universal form, honored by Vidura, Krishna went to Yudhishthira and said: 'Fight Suyodhana.'
कुरुपाण्डवसङ्ग्रामवर्णनम् । अग्निरुवाच यौधिष्ठिरी दौर्योधनी कुरुक्षेत्रं ययौ चमूः। भीष्मद्रोणादिकान् हृष्ट्वा नायुध्यत गुरुनिति
Description of the battle between the Kurus and Pandavas. Agni said: The army of Yudhishthira and Duryodhana went to Kurukshetra; Bhishma, Drona and others rejoiced, but did not fight, saying they were teachers.
पार्थं ह्युवाच भगवान्नशोच्या भीष्ममुख्यकाः। शरीराणि विनाशीनि न शरीरी विनश्यति
The blessed Lord said to Partha: 'Those led by Bhishma are not to be grieved for; bodies are perishable, but the soul does not perish.'
