शम्बरेणाम्बुधौ क्षिप्तोमत्स्योजग्राह धीवरः। तं मत्स्यं शम्बरायादान्मायावत्यैच शम्बरः
Thrown into the ocean by Śambara, a fisherman caught him as a fish; that fish was taken to Śambara, and Māyāvatī was with Śambara.
मायावती मत्स्यमध्ये दृष्ट्वा स्वं पतिमादरात्। पपोष सा तं चोवाच रतिस्तेऽहं पतिर्मम
Seeing her own husband inside the fish, Māyāvatī, with affection, nourished him and said, 'I am your Rati, you are my husband.'
कामस्त्वं शम्भुनानङ्गः कृतोहं शम्बरेण च। हृता न तस्य पत्नी त्वं मायाज्ञः शम्बरं जहि
'You are Kāma, made bodiless by Śiva, and I was taken by Śambara; I am not his wife. You, knower of magic, slay Śambara.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा शम्बरं हत्वा प्रद्युम्नः सह भार्यया। मा यावत्या ययौ कृष्णं कृष्णो हृष्टोऽथ रुक्मिणी
Hearing this, Pradyumna killed Śambara and, together with his wife Māyāvatī, went to Kṛṣṇa; Kṛṣṇa and Rukmiṇī rejoiced.
प्रद्युम्नादनिरुद्वोभूदुषापतिरुदारधीः। बाणो बलिसुतस्तस्य सुतोषा शोणितं पुरम्
From Pradyumna was born Aniruddha, lord of Uṣā, noble-minded; Bāṇa, son of Bali, had a daughter Uṣā in the city of Śoṇita.
तपसा शिवपुत्रोऽभूद् मायूरध्वजपातितः। युद्धं प्राप्स्यसि बाण त्वं बाणं तुष्टः शिवोभ्यधात्
Through austerity, he became the son of Śiva, bearing the peacock banner; Śiva, pleased, said to Bāṇa, 'You will obtain battle.'
शिवेन क्रीडतीं गौरीं दृष्ट्वोषा सस्पृहा पतौ। तामाह गौरी भर्त्ता ते निशि सुप्तेति दर्शनात्
Seeing Gaurī playing with Śiva, Uṣā longed for a husband; Gaurī said to her, 'Your husband will appear to you at night in a dream.'
वैशाखमासद्वादश्यां पुंसो भर्त्ता भविष्यति। गौर्य्युक्त हर्षिता चोषा गृहे सुप्ता ददर्श तम्
On the twelfth day of the month of Vaiśākha, a man will become your husband; delighted by Gaurī’s words, Uṣā saw him in her house while asleep.
आत्मना सङ्गतं ज्ञात्वा तत्सख्या चित्रलेखया। लिखिताद्वै चित्रपटादनिस्द्धं समानयत्
Knowing her union with him, her friend Citralekhā, by painting his image on a canvas, brought Aniruddha without obstruction.
कृष्णणौत्रं द्वारकातो दुहिता बाणमन्त्रिणः। कुम्भाण्डस्यानिरुद्धोगाद्रराम ह्युषया सह
Aniruddha, Kṛṣṇa’s grandson, went from Dvārakā, with Uṣā, daughter of Bāṇa’s minister Kumbhāṇḍa.
बाणध्वजस्य सम्पातै रक्षिभिः स निवेदितः। अनिरुद्धस्य बाणेन युद्धमासीत्सुदारुणम्
When Bāṇa’s guards discovered their union, they reported it; a fierce battle arose between Bāṇa and Aniruddha.
श्रुत्वा तु नारदात् कृष्णः प्रद्युम्नबलभद्रवान्। गरुडस्थोथ जित्वाग्नीञ्ज्वरं माहेश्वरन्तथा
Hearing from Nārada, Kṛṣṇa, along with Pradyumna and Balabhadra, mounted Garuḍa, defeated the fire and the fever of Maheśvara.
हरिशङ्करयोर्युद्धं बभूवाथ शराशरि। नन्दिविनायकस्कन्दमुखास्ताक्षर्यादिभिर्जिताः
A battle took place between Hari and Śaṅkara, with volleys of arrows; Nandi, Vināyaka, Skanda, and others were defeated by Kṛṣṇa’s allies.
जृम्भिते शङ्करे नष्टे जृम्भणास्त्रेण विष्णुना। छिन्नं सहस्त्रं बाहूनां रुद्रेणाभयमर्थितम्
When Śaṅkara was overcome by the Jṛmbhaṇa weapon of Viṣṇu, a thousand arms were cut off; Rudra, seeking safety, was granted it.
विष्णुना जीवितो बाणो द्विबाहुः प्राब्रवीच्छिवम्। त्वया यदभयं दत्तं बाणस्यास्य मया च तत्
By Viṣṇu's grace, Bāṇa was spared; the two-armed one spoke to Śiva: 'The fearlessness granted to this Bāṇa by you and by me remains.'
आवयोर्नास्ति भेदो वै भेदी नरकमाप्नुयात्। शिवाद्यैः पूजितो विष्णुः सोनिरुद्ध उषादियुक्
There is no division between us; whoever creates division attains hell. Viṣṇu, worshipped by Śiva and others, is accompanied by Aniruddha and Uṣā.
द्वारकान्तु गतो रेमे उग्रसेनादियादवैः। अनिरुद्धात्मजो वज्रो मार्कण्डेयात्तु सर्ववित्
He went to Dvārakā and delighted with Ugrasena and the Yādavas. Aniruddha's son, Vajra, was all-knowing, descended from Mārkaṇḍeya.
बलभद्रः प्रलम्बघ्नो यमुनाकर्षणोऽभवत्। द्विविदस्य कपेर्भेत्ता कौरवोन्मादनाशनः
Balabhadra, destroyer of Pralamba, drew the Yamunā; he shattered the monkey Dvivida and ended the madness of the Kauravas.
हरी रेमेनेकमूर्त्ती रुक्मिण्यादिभिरीश्वरः। पुत्रानुत्पादयामास त्वसंख्यातान् स यादवान्
Hari, the lord, enjoyed himself in a single form with Rukmiṇī and others; he fathered countless sons among the Yādavas.
अग्निरुवाच भारतं सम्प्रवक्षयामि कृष्णमाहात्म्यलक्षणम्। भूभारमहरद्विष्णुनिमित्तीकृत्य पाण्डवान्
Agni said: I will recount the Bhārata, describing the greatness of Kṛṣṇa; Viṣṇu, taking the Pāṇḍavas as his cause, removed the burden of the earth.
विष्णुनाभ्यब्जजो ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मापुत्रोऽत्रिरत्रितः। सोमः सोमाद् बुधस्तस्मादैल आसीत् पुरूरवाः
From Viṣṇu was born Brahmā; Brahmā's son was Atri, and from Atri came Soma. From Soma came Budha, from Budha Aila, and from Aila, Purūravas.
तस्मादायुस्ततो राजा नहुषोऽतो ययातिकः। ततः पुरुस्तस्य वंशे भरतोऽथ नृपः कुरुः
From him came Ayu; then King Nahuṣa, then Yayāti. From Purū, in his lineage, came Bharata, and then King Kuru.
तद्वंशे शान्तनुस्तस्माद्भीष्मो गङ्गासुतोऽनुजौ। चित्राङ्गदौ विचित्रश्च सत्यवत्याञ्च शान्तनोः
In that lineage, Śāntanu was born; from him, Bhīṣma, son of Gaṅgā, and his younger brothers, Citrāṅgada and Vicitra, and Satyavatī's son Śāntanu.
स्वर्गं गते शान्तनौ च भीष्मो भार्य्याविवर्ज्जितः। अपालयत् भ्रातृराज्यं बालश्चि त्राङ्गदो हतः
When Śāntanu went to heaven, Bhīṣma, without a wife, protected his brothers' kingdom; Citrāṅgada, still a child, was slain.
चित्राङ्गदेन द्वे कन्ये काशिराजस्य चाम्बिका। अम्बालिका च भीष्मेण आनीते विजितारिणा
Citrāṅgada brought two maidens, Ambikā and Ambālikā, daughters of the king of Kāśi; Bhīṣma, the conqueror, brought them.
भार्ये विचित्रवीर्यस्य यक्ष्मणा स दिवङ्गतः। सत्यवत्या ह्यनुमतादम्बिकायां नृपोभवत्
The wives of Vicitravīrya, after he died of consumption, with Satyavatī's consent, produced a king in Ambikā.
धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बालिकायां पाण्डुश्च व्यासतः सुतः। गान्धार्य्यां धृतराष्ट्राच्च दुर्योंधनमुखं शतम्
Dhṛtarāṣṭra was born to Ambālikā, and Pāṇḍu, son of Vyāsa. From Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Gāndhārī came a hundred sons headed by Duryodhana.
शतश्रृङ्गाश्रमपदे भार्यायोगाद् यतो मृतिः। ऋषिशापात्ततो धर्म्मात् कुन्त्यां पाण्डोर्युधिष्ठिरः
At the hermitage of Śataśṛṅga, due to lack of a wife, death occurred; from a sage's curse, Dharma begot Yudhiṣṭhira on Kuntī for Pāṇḍu.
वाताद्भीमोऽर्जुनः शक्रान्माद्र्यामश्विकुमारतः। नकुलः सहदेवश्च पाण्डुर्म्माद्रीयुतो मृतः
Bhīma was born from the wind, Arjuna from Indra; from Mādrī, the twin sons Nakula and Sahadeva were born to the horse-god. Pāṇḍu, united with Mādrī, died.
कर्णः कुन्त्यां हि कन्यायां जातो दुर्योधनाश्रितः। कुरुपाण्डवयोर्वैरन्दैवयोगाद् बभूव ह
Karna was born to Kuntī while she was a maiden; he sided with Duryodhana. The enmity between the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas arose by fate.
