पद्मषण्डाद्वराहाच्च गोष्ठादपि चतुष्पथात्। मृत्तिका द्वादश ग्राह्य वैकुण्ठेष्टौ पिनाकिनि
From a lotus cluster, from a boar, from a cowshed, and from a crossroads, twelve portions of clay are to be taken; eight for Vaikuṇṭha, and for Pinākin.
न्यग्रोधोदुम्बराश्वत्थचूतजम्वुत्वगुद्भवं। कषायपञ्चकं ग्राह्यमार्त्तवञ्च फलाष्टकं
The five astringent substances are to be taken from the bark of banyan, udumbara, aśvattha, mango, and jambu trees; and eight kinds of fruits from the season.
तीर्थाम्भांसि सुगन्धीनि तथा सर्वौषधीजलं। शस्तं पुष्पफलं वक्ष्ये रत्नगोश्रृङ्गवारि च
Fragrant waters from sacred places, as well as water from all medicinal plants, are suitable. I will mention the proper flowers and fruits, and also water from gems and cow horns.
स्नानायापाहरेत् पञ्च पञ्चगव्यामृतं तथा। पिष्टनिर्मितवस्त्रादिद्रव्यं निर्म्मज्जनाय च
For bathing, five items are to be brought, as well as the nectar of five products from the cow. Substances made from flour and cloth are also to be used for purification.
सहस्रशुषिरं कुम्भं मण्डलाय च रोचना । शतमोषधिमूलानां विजया लक्ष्मणा बला
A pot with a thousand holes, rocanā for the maṇḍala, and roots of a hundred medicinal herbs—vijayā, lakṣmaṇā, and balā.
गुडूच्यतिबला पाठा सहदेवा शतावरी। ऋद्धि सुवर्चसा वृद्धिः स्नाने प्रोक्ता पृथक् पृथक
Guḍūcī, atibalā, pāṭhā, sahadevā, and śatāvarī; ṛddhi and suvarcasā bring increase. Each is prescribed separately for bathing.
रक्षायै तिलदर्भौघो भस्मस्नानन्तु केवलं। यवगोधूमविल्वानां चुर्णानि च विचक्षणः
For protection, a heap of sesame and darbha grass, and only a bath with ashes; powders of barley, wheat, and bael, the wise should use.
विलेपनं सकर्प्पूरं स्नानार्थं कुम्भगण्डकान् । खट्वाञ्च तुलिकायुग्मं सोपधानं सव स्त्रकां
For anointing, camphor is used, and for bathing, the sides of the pot; a bed, a pair of pillows, with a cushion and a cloth.
कुर्य्याद्वित्तानुसारेण शयने लक्ष्यकल्पने । घृतक्षौद्रयुतं पात्रं कुर्य्यात् स्वर्णशलाकिकां
According to wealth, one should arrange the bed for the ritual; a vessel mixed with ghee and honey, and a golden stick should be prepared.
वर्द्धनीं शिवकुम्भञ्च लोकपालघटानपि। एकं निद्राकृते कुम्भं शान्त्यर्थं कुण्डसङ्ख्यया
A nourishing Śiva pot, and pots for the guardians of the world; one pot for sleep, and for peace, according to the number of kuṇḍas.
द्वारपालादिधर्म्मादि प्रशान्तादिघटानपि। वास्तुलक्ष्मीगणेशानां कलशानपरानपि
Pots for the doorkeepers and for dharma, and also for peace; pots for Vāstu, Lakṣmī, and Gaṇeśa, and other pots as well.
धान्यपुञ्जकृताधारान् सवस्त्रान् स्रग्विभूषितान्। सहिरण्यान् समालब्धान् गन्धपानीयपूरितान्
Containers made from heaps of grain, adorned with cloth and garlands, filled with gold, and sprinkled, filled with fragrant water.
पूर्णपात्रफलाधारान् पल्लवाद्यान् सलक्षणान्। वस्त्रैराच्छादयेत् कुम्भानाहरेद्गौरसर्षपान्
Containers filled with fruits, vessels with leaves and other auspicious marks; cover the pots with cloths, and bring white mustard seeds.
विकिरार्थन्तथा लाजान् ज्ञानखड्गञ्च पूर्ववत्। सापिधानां चरुस्थालीं दर्व्वी च ताम्रनिर्म्मितां
For scattering, bring roasted rice, and the sword of knowledge as before; a vessel for oblation with a lid, and a ladle made of copper.
घृतक्षौद्रान्वितं पात्रं पादाभ्यङ्गकृते तथा। विष्टरांस्त्रिशतादर्भदलैर्बाहुप्रमाणकान्
A vessel mixed with ghee and honey for anointing the feet; mats made from three hundred darbha blades, measured by the arm.
चतुरश्चतुरस्तद्वत् पालाशान् परिधीनपि। तिलपात्रं हविः पात्रमर्धपात्रं पवित्रकं
Four-sided and square mats, likewise made from palāśa leaves; a vessel for sesame, a vessel for oblation, a half-vessel, and a purifier.
पलविंशाष्टमानानि घटो धूपप्रदानकं । श्रुक्श्रुवौ पिटकं पीठं व्यजनं शुष्कमिन्धनं
Twenty-eight items: a pot for offering incense, ladles, a basket, a seat, a fan, and dry fuel.
पुष्पं पत्रं गुग्गुलञ्च घृतैर्द्दीपांश्च धूपकं। अक्षतानि त्रिसूत्रीञ्च गव्यमाज्यं यवांस्तिलान्
Flowers, leaves, guggul resin, lamps fueled with ghee, incense, unbroken rice, triple-threaded cords, cow's ghee, barley, and sesame seeds.
कुशाः शानत्यै त्रिमधुरं समिधो दशपर्विकाः। बाहुमात्रं श्रुवं हस्तम् अर्कादिग्रहशान्त्ये
Kusha grass for purification, the three sweet substances, ten sticks of fuel, a ladle the length of an arm, and a hand for the ritual of appeasing the Sun and other planets.
समिधोऽर्कपलाशोत्थाः खादिरामार्गपिप्पलाः । उदुम्बरशमीदूर्वाकुशोत्थाः शतमष्ट च
The fuel sticks should be from arka, palasha, khadira, amra, pippala, udumbara, shami, durva, and kusha—one hundred and eight in total.
तदभावे यवतिला गृहोपकरणं तथा। स्थालीदर्वीपिधानादि देवादिभ्योंऽशुकद्वयं
If those are unavailable, barley and sesame may be used, as well as household utensils; two cloths for the deities and others, including a pot, ladle, and cover.
मुद्रामुकृटवासांसि हारकुण्डलकङ्कणान्। कुर्य्यादाचार्यपूजार्थं वित्तशाठ्यं विवर्जयेत्
For the worship of the teacher, one should prepare rings, crowns, garments, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, avoiding any deceit regarding wealth.
तत्पादपादहीना च मूत्तिभृदस्त्रजापिनां । पूजा स्याज्जापिभिस्तुल्या विप्रदैवज्ञशिल्पिनां
If any of these are lacking, the worship performed by those who recite or by priests, astrologers, and artisans is considered equivalent.
वज्रार्कशान्तौ नीलातिनाल्मुक्ताफलानि च । पुष्पपद्मादिशगञ्च वैदूर्य्यं रत्नमष्टमं
For the appeasement of Vajra and the Sun, blue sapphires, blue gems, pearls, flowers, lotuses, conch shells, and the eighth gem, vaidurya, are prescribed.
उषीरमाधवक्रान्तारक्तचन्दनकागुरुं। श्रीखण्डं सारिकङ्कुष्ठं शङ्खिनी ह्योषधीगणः
Vetiver, madhavi creeper, kranta, red sandalwood, agaru, fine sandal, sarika, kankusta, shankhini, and other medicinal herbs.
हेमताम्रमयं रक्तं राजतञ्च सकांस्यकं। शीसकञ्चेति लोहानि हरितालं मनः शिला
Gold, copper, red metal, silver, bell metal, lead—these are the metals, along with orpiment and realgar.
गैरिकं हेममाक्षीकं पारदो वह्निगैरिकं। गन्धकाभ्रकमित्यष्टौ धातवो ब्रीहयस्तथा
Red ochre, gold, makshika, mercury, fire-colored ochre, sulphur, and mica—these are the eight minerals, as well as varieties of rice.
गोधूमान् सतिलान्माषान्मुद्गानप्याहरेद्यवान्। नीवारान् श्यामकानेवं व्रीहयोऽप्यष्ट कीर्त्तिताः
One should also bring wheat, sesame, black gram, green gram, barley, nivara rice, shyamaka, and thus the eight kinds of rice are enumerated.
ईश्वर उवाच स्नात्वा नित्यद्वयं कृत्वा प्रणवार्थकरो गुरुः । सहायैर्मूर्त्तिपैर्विप्रैः सह गच्छेन्मशालयं
Ishvara said: Having bathed and performed the two daily rites, the teacher, intent on the meaning of the sacred syllable, should proceed to the fire-hall with companions, images, and brahmins.
शान्त्यादितोरणांस्तत्र पूर्ववत् पूजयेत् क्रमात्। प्रदक्षिणक्रमादेषां शाखायां द्वारपालकान्
There, as before, he should worship the gateways beginning with Shanti, in order, and circumambulate them, as well as the doorkeepers at each branch.
