Agni Purana

आकुञ्चितकचं वास्तुमुत्तानमसुराकृति । स्मरेत् पूजासु कुड्यादिनिवेशे उत्तराननं

One should remember the Vāstu-purusha, with hair drawn up, lying down in the form of a demon, during the worship and the laying out of walls and other structures, with his face to the north.

जानुनी कूर्परौ शक्‌थि दिशि वातहुताशयोः। पैत्र्यां पादपुटे रौद्र्यां शिरोऽस्य हृदयेऽञ्जलिः

His knees and elbows are in the directions of Vāyu and Agni; in the ancestral direction, his soles, in the fierce direction, his head, and in the heart, his hands joined in reverence.

अस्य देहे समारूढा देवताः पूजिताः शुभाः। अष्ठौ कोणाधिपास्तत्र कोणार्द्धेष्वष्टसु स्थिताः

Upon his body are established auspicious deities who have been worshipped; there, the eight lords of the corners are stationed in the eight half-corners.

षट्‌पदास्तु मरीच्याद्या दिक्षु पूर्वादिषु क्रमात्। मध्ये चतुष्पदो ब्रह्मा शेषास्तु पदिकाः स्मुताः

The six-footed ones, beginning with Marīci, are in the directions from east onward in order; in the center is the four-footed Brahmā, and the rest are called the one-footed.

समस्तनाडीसंयोगे महामर्म्मानुजं फलं। त्रिशूलं स्वस्तिकं वज्रं महास्वस्तिकसम्पुटौ

Where all the channels meet is the great vital spot, yielding its own result; the trident, the svastika, the thunderbolt, and the great svastika with its enclosure are there.

त्रिकटुं मणिबन्धं च सुविशुद्धं पदं तता। इति द्वादश मर्म्माणि वास्तोर्भित्त्यादिषु त्यजेत्

The three-peaked, the wrist-joint, and the perfectly pure spot—thus, these twelve vital points should be avoided in the walls and other parts of the site.

साज्यमक्षतमीशाय पर्जन्यायाम्बुजोदकं। ददीताथ जयन्ताय पताकां कुङ्कुमोज्ज्वलां

One should offer clarified butter mixed with unbroken rice to Īśa, water from a lotus to Parjanya, and then a bright saffron flag to Jayanta.

रत्नवारि महेन्द्राय रवौ धूम्रं वितानकं। सत्याय घृतगोधूममाज्यभक्तं भृशाय च

One should offer gem-water to Mahendra, a grey canopy to the Sun, clarified butter, wheat, and rice-cakes to Satya, and likewise to Bhṛśa.

विमांसमन्तरिक्षाय शक्तुन्तेभ्यस्तु पूर्वतः। मधुक्षीराकज्यसम्बूर्णां प्रदद्याद्वह्नये श्रुचं

One should offer uncooked meat to Antarikṣa, a weapon to Śakti, and, in the east, a ladle filled with honey, milk, curds, and clarified butter to Agni.

लाजान् पूर्णे सुवर्णाम्बु वितथाय निवेदयेत्। दद्याद् गृहक्षते क्षौद्रं यमराजे पलौदनं

One should present roasted rice and pure water in gold to Vitatha; to the guardian of the house, honey; to Yamarāja, rice cooked with pulses.

गन्धं गन्धर्वनाथाय जिह्वां भृङ्गाय पक्षिणः। मृगाय पद्मपर्णानि याम्यामित्यष्टदेवता

One should offer fragrance to the lord of Gandharvas, the tongue of a bird to Bhringa, lotus leaves to the deer, and thus to the eight deities in the southern direction.

पित्रे तिलोदकं क्षीरं वृक्षजं दन्तधावनं। दौवारिकाय देवाय प्रदद्याद् धेनुमुद्रया

To the ancestors, one should offer sesame-water, milk, and a twig for cleaning the teeth from a tree; to the divine doorkeeper, a cow marked with a seal.

सुग्रीवाय दिशेत् पूपान् पुष्पदन्ताय दर्ब्भकं। रक्तं प्रचेतसे पद्ममसुराय सुरासवं

To Sugrīva, one should offer cakes; to Puṣpadanta, darbha grass; to Pracetas, a red lotus; to Asura, spirituous liquor.

घृतं गुडौदनं शेषे रोगाय घृतमण्डकान्। लाजान् वा पश्चिमाशायां देवाष्टकमितीरितं

To Śeṣa, clarified butter and rice cooked with jaggery; to Rogā, cakes of clarified butter; or roasted rice in the western direction, as declared for the eight deities.

मारुताय ध्वजं पीतं नागाय नागकेशरं। मुख्ये भक्ष्याणि भल्लाटे मुद्गसूपं सुसंस्कृतं

To Māruta, a yellow banner; to Nāga, nāgakeśara flowers; to Bhallāṭa, the chief, well-prepared pulse soup and other foods.

सोमाय पायसं साज्यं शालूकमूषये दिशेत्। लोपीमदितये दित्यै पुरीमित्युत्तराष्टकं

To Soma, offer milk-rice with ghee; to Śālūka and Mūṣa, likewise. To Lopī, Maditi, and Diti, offer a city in the northern octant.

मोदकान् ब्रह्मणः प्राच्यां षट्पदाय मरीचये। सवित्रे रक्तपुष्पाणि वह्न्यधः कोणकोष्ठके

To Brahman in the east, offer sweet cakes; to Marīci, a six-petaled flower; to Savitṛ, red flowers below the fire, in the corner chamber.

तदधः कोष्ठके दद्यात् सावित्र्यै च कुशोदकं । दक्षिणे चन्दनं रक्तं षट्पदाय विवस्वते

Below that, in the chamber, offer sacred grass water to Sāvitrī; on the southern side, red sandalwood to Vivasvat, who is in the six-petaled seat.

हरिद्रौदनमिन्द्राय रक्षोधः कोणकोष्ठके। इन्द्रजयाय मिश्रान्नमिन्द्राधस्तान्निवेदयेत्

To Indra, in the chamber below the Rakṣas corner, offer rice cooked with turmeric; to Indrajaya, mixed food below Indra, present as offering.

वारुण्यां षट्पदासीने मित्रे सगुडमोदनं। रुद्राय घृतसिद्धान्नं वायुकोणाधरे पदे

In the seat of Varuṇī, in the six-petaled position, to Mitra, offer sweetened rice; to Rudra, clarified butter-cooked food at the lower place of the wind corner.

तदधो रुद्रदासाय मांसं मार्गमथोत्तरे। ददीत माषनैवेद्यं षट्पदस्थे धराधरे

Below that, in the place of Rudra's servant, offer meat; in the northern path, offer black gram as an offering to the earth-holder in the six-petaled seat.

आपाय शिवकोणाधः तद्वत्साय च तत्स्थले । क्रमाद्दद्याद्दधि क्षीरं पूजयित्वा विधानतः

To Āpa, below the Śiva corner, and likewise to Sāya at that place, offer curd and milk in order, having worshipped according to the rite.

चतुष्पदे निविष्टाय ब्रह्मणे मध्यदेशतः। पञ्चगव्याक्षतोपेतञ्चरुं साज्यं निवेदयेत्

To Brahman, established in the four-footed seat at the center, offer a sacrificial porridge with five products of the cow and ghee.

ईशादिवायुपर्य्यन्तकोणेष्वथ यथाक्रमं। वास्तुवाह्ये चरक्याद्याश्चतस्रः पूजयेद् यथा

In the corners from Īśāna to the end of the wind direction, in order, worship the four guardians of the dwelling, beginning with Caraka, as prescribed.

चरक्यै सघृतं मांसं विदार्य्यै दधिपङ्कजे। पूतनायै पलं पित्तं रुधिरं च निवेदयेत्

To Carakī, offer meat with ghee; to Vidāryā, curd in a lotus bowl; to Pūtanā, a portion of bile and blood as offering.

अस्थीनि पापराक्षस्यै रक्तपित्तपलानि च। ततोमाषौदनं प्राच्यां स्कन्दाय विनिवेदयेत्

To Pāparākṣasī, offer bones and portions of blood and bile; then, in the east, offer black gram rice to Skanda.

अर्य्यम्णे दक्षिणाशायां पूपान् कृसरया युतान्। जम्भकाय च वारुण्यामामिषं रुधिरान्वितं

To Aryaman in the southern quarter, offer cakes mixed with pulse; to Jambhaka in the Varuṇa direction, offer meat with blood.

उदीच्यां पिलिपिञ्जाय रक्तान्नं कुसुमानि च। यजेद्वा सकलं वास्तुं कुशदध्यक्षतैर्जलैः

In the north, to Pilipiñja, offer red rice and flowers; or one may worship the entire dwelling with sacred grass, curd, and water.

गृहे च नगरादौ च एकाशीतिपदैर्यजेत्। त्रिपदा रज्जवः कार्य्याः षट्पदाश्च विकोणके

In the house or in a city, worship with eighty-one seats; three-footed lines should be made, and six-petaled seats in the corners.
