कुर्य्यात् करद्वयायामां वेदीमष्टाङ्गुलोच्छ्रितां। श्रीपर्णाद्यासने तत्र विन्यस्यानन्तमानसं
One should make an altar two hand-spans long and eight fingers high; there, on a seat of Śrīparṇa leaves and the like, one should place the infinite mind.
शिष्यं निवेश्य पूर्वास्यं सकलीकृत्य पूजयेत्। काञ्चिकौदनमृद्भस्मदूर्वागोमयगोलकैः
Having seated the disciple facing east, having made him complete, one should worship with a girdle, rice, clay, ashes, dūrvā grass, and cow-dung balls.
सिद्धार्थदधितोयैश्च कुर्य्यान्निर्म्मञ्छनं ततः। क्षारोदानुक्रमेणाथ हृदा विद्येशशम्बरै
Then, with prepared rice, curd, and consecrated water, one should perform the anointing; then, in order, with milk and rice, and with the mantras for the lords of knowledge.
कलसैः स्नापयेच्छिष्यं स्वधाधारणयान्वितं। परिधाप्य सिने वस्त्रे निवेश्य शिवदक्षिणे
With pots, one should bathe the disciple, accompanied by the establishment of the svadhā; having clothed him in clean garments, seat him to the right of Shiva.
पूर्व्वोदितासने शिष्यं पुनः पूर्ववदर्च्चयेत्। उष्णीषं योगपट्टञ्च मुकुटं कर्त्तरीं घटीं
On the previously mentioned seat, one should again worship the disciple as before, with a turban, yoga-belt, crown, knife, and water-pot.
अक्षमालां पुस्तकादि शिविकाद्यधिकारकं। दीक्षाव्याख्याप्रतिष्ठाद्यं ज्ञात्वाऽद्यप्रभृति त्वया
With a rosary, book, and the like, and with a palanquin and other insignia of office, knowing the duties of initiation, explanation, and installation, from today onward by you.
सुपरीक्ष्य विधातव्यमाज्ञां संश्रावयेदिति। अभिवाद्य ततः शिष्यं प्रणिपत्य महेश्वरं
Having thoroughly examined, one should perform the rite; let him proclaim the command: 'Having saluted the disciple, then bowing to the great Lord—'
विघ्नज्वालापनोदार्थं कुर्य्याद्विज्ञापनां यथा। अभिषेकार्थमादिष्टस्त्वयाऽहं गुरुमुर्त्तिना
For the removal of obstacles and flames, one should make the request as follows: 'I have been instructed by you, O Guru in form, for the purpose of consecration.'
संहितापारगः सोऽयमभिषिक्तो मया शिव। तृप्तये मन्त्रचक्रस्य पञ्चपञ्चाहुतीर्यजेत्
'He, who has mastered the scriptures, is now consecrated by me, O Shiva; for the satisfaction of the mantra-circle, let him offer five sets of five oblations.'
दद्यात् पूर्णां ततः शिष्यं स्थापयेन्निजदक्षिणे। शिष्यदक्षिणपाणिस्था अह्गुलष्ठाद्यङ्गुलीः क्रमात्
Then one should give the full (offering), and place the disciple at one's own right; in the disciple's right hand, place the fingers from the little finger onward, in order.
लात्र्छयेदुपबद्धाय दग्धदर्भाग्रशम्बरैः। कुसुमानि करे दत्वा प्रणामं कारयेदमुं
One should touch the bound one with the burnt tips of darbha grass; having placed flowers in his hand, one should make him perform obeisance.
कुम्भेऽनले शिवे स्वस्मिंस्ततस्तत्कृत्यमाविशेत्। अनुग्राह्यास्त्वया शिष्याः शास्त्रेण सुपरीक्षिताः
In the pot, in the fire, in Shiva, in oneself—then one should enter upon the respective acts; the disciples should be accepted by you, thoroughly examined by scripture.
भूपबन्मानवादीनामभिषेकादबीप्सितं। आं श्रां श्रौं पशुं हूं फडिति अस्त्रराजाभिषेकतः
For kings, Brahmins, men, and others, the consecration is as desired; 'āṃ śrāṃ śrauṃ paśuṃ hūṃ phaṭ'—with the king of weapons, from the consecration.
ईश्वर उवाच अभिषिक्तः शिवं विष्णुं पूजयेद्भास्करादिकान्। शङ्खभेर्य्यादिनिर्घाषैः स्नापयेत् पञ्चगव्यके
Īśvara said: The consecrated one should worship Shiva, Viṣṇu, the Sun, and others; with the sounds of conch, kettle-drum, and the like, he should bathe them with the five products of the cow.
यो देवान्देबलोकं स याति स्वकुलमुद्धरन्। वर्षकोटिसहस्रेषु यत् पापं समुपार्ज्जितं
He who worships the gods and the world of the gods goes to his own family, uplifting it; whatever sin has been accumulated in a hundred thousand million years—
घृताभ्यङ्गेन देवानां भस्मीभवति पावके। आढकेन घृताद्यैश्व देवान् स्नाप्य सुरो भवेत्
By anointing the gods with ghee, it is burned up in the fire; by bathing the gods with a measure of ghee and the like, one becomes a god.
चन्दनेनानुलिप्याथ नान्धाद्यैः पूजयेत्तथा। अल्पायासन स्तुतिभि स्तुता देवास्तु सर्वदा
After anointing with sandalwood, one should worship with offerings such as nāndī, and always praise the gods with hymns that require little effort.
अतीतानागतज्ञानमन्त्रधीभुक्तिमुक्तिदाः। गृहीत्वा प्रश्नसूक्ष्मार्णे हृते द्वाभ्यां शुभाशुभं
They grant knowledge of past and future, insight into mantras, intelligence, enjoyment, and liberation; by taking up subtle questions, auspicious or inauspicious results are determined by two means.
त्रिभिर्जीवो मूलधातुश्चतुर्भिब्राह्मणादिधीः। पञ्चादौ भूततत्त्वादि शेष चैवं जपादिकं
With three, there is the living soul and the root element; with four, the intellect of Brahmins and others; with five at the beginning, the elements and principles, and the rest is recitation and related acts.
एकत्रिकातित्रिकान्ते पदे द्विपमकान्तके। अशुभं मध्यमं मध्येष्विन्द्रश्त्रिषु नृपः शुभः
At the end of a single, triple, or triple group, and at the end of a pair, inauspiciousness is in the middle, middling in the middle positions, and among three, Indra is auspicious, O King.
सङ्खयावृन्दे जीविताब्दं यमोऽब्ददराहा ध्रुवं। सूर्य्येभास्येशदुर्गाश्रीविष्णुमन्त्रैर्ल्लिखेत् कजे
In the group of numbers, the span of life is determined by Yama, the year, the lunar day, and the pole star; with mantras for the Sun, Moon, Īśa, Durgā, Śrī, and Viṣṇu, one should inscribe on birch bark.
कठिन्या जप्तया स्प्टष्टे गोमूत्राकृतिरेखया। आरभ्यैकं त्रिकं यावत्त्रिचतुष्कावसानकं
By the firmness of recitation, by a clear line resembling cow urine, beginning from one, then three, up to the end of three and fourfold groups.
मरुद् व्योम मरुद्वीजैश्चतुः षष्टिपदे तथा। अक्षाणां पतनात् स्पर्शाद्विषमादौ शुभादिकं
With Maruts, space, and Marut-borns, in sixty-four steps likewise; from the fall or touch of dice, at the beginning of odd numbers, auspiciousness and the like are determined.
एकत्रिकादिमारभ्य अन्ते चाष्टत्रिकं तथा। ध्वजाद्यायाः समा हीना विषमाः शोभनादिदाः
Beginning from a single or triple group, and at the end with eight and three likewise; for banners and the like, the deficient are inauspicious, the uneven give auspiciousness and so on.
आइपल्लवितैः काद्यैः षोडशस्वरपूर्व्वगैः। आद्यैस्तैः सस्वरैः काद्यैस्त्रिपुरानाममन्त्रकाः
With ā, i, pa, lla, vi, and others, and with the sixteen preceding vowel sounds; with those initial sounds and their vowels, the mantras of the three cities are formed.
ह्रीं वीजाः प्रणवाद्याः स्युर्न्नमोऽन्ता यत्र पूजने। मन्त्रा विंशतिसाहस्राः शतं षष्ठ्यदिकं ततः
The seed syllable hrīṃ and those beginning with praṇava, ending with namas in worship; the mantras number twenty thousand, then one hundred and sixty more.
आं ह्रीं मन्त्राः सरस्वत्याश्चण्डिकायास्तथैव च। तथा गौर्य्याश्च दुर्गाया आं श्रीं मन्त्राः श्रियस्तथा
The mantras āṃ and hrīṃ are for Sarasvatī and Caṇḍikā likewise; so also for Gaurī and Durgā, and the mantras āṃ and śrīṃ are for Śrī.
तथा क्षौं कौं मन्त्राः सूर्य्यस्य आं हौं मन्त्राः शिवस्य च। आं गं मन्त्रा गणेशस्य आं मन्त्राश्च तथा हरेः
Likewise, the mantras kṣauṃ and kauṃ are for Sūrya; āṃ and hauṃ are for Śiva; āṃ and gaṃ are for Gaṇeśa; and āṃ mantras are also for Hari.
शतार्द्धैकाधिकैः काद्यैस्तथा षोडशभिः स्वरैः। काद्यैस्तैः सस्वरैराद्यैः कान्तैर्म्मन्त्रास्तथाखिलाः
With one hundred and fifty-one initial sounds, and likewise with sixteen vowels; with those initial sounds and vowels, all mantras are thus formed.
रवीशदेवीविष्णूनां खब्धिदेवेन्द्रवर्त्तनात्। शतत्रयं षष्ट्यधिकं प्रत्येकं मण्डलं क्रमात्। अभिषिक्तो जपेद् ध्यायेच्छिष्यादीन् दीक्षयेद्गुरुः
For the Sun, Īśa, the Goddess, and Viṣṇu, by the movement of the letters, Indra, and others, three hundred and sixty for each circle in order; the teacher, having been consecrated, should recite, meditate, and initiate disciples.
