अभूत् पूर्म्मथुरा काचिद् रामोक्तो भरतोऽवधीत्। कोटित्रयञ्च शैलूषपुत्राणां निशितैः शरैः
Once there was a city called Mathura, which Bharata, at Rama's command, destroyed; and with sharp arrows he slew three crores of the sons of the actors.
शैलूषं दुप्टगन्धर्वं सिन्धुतीरनिवासिनम्। तक्षञ्च पुष्करं पुत्रं स्थापयित्वाथ देशयोः
The actor, a wicked Gandharva dwelling on the banks of the Sindhu, and his sons Taksha and Pushkara, he left behind in those lands.
भरतोगात्सशत्रुघ्नो राघवं पूजयन् स्थितः। रामो दुष्टान्निहत्याजौ शिष्टान् सम्पाल्य मानवः
Bharata, together with Shatrughna, went forth, honoring Raghava who remained; Rama, having slain the wicked in battle, protected the remaining people as a just man.
पुत्रौ कुशल्वौ जातौ वाल्मीकेराश्रमे वरौ। लोकापवादात्त्यक्तायां ज्ञातौ सुचरितश्रवात्
His two excellent sons, Kusha and Lava, were born in Valmiki's hermitage; though Sita was abandoned due to public reproach, their noble conduct became known.
राज्येभिषिच्य ब्रह्माहमस्मीति ध्यानतत्परः। दशवर्षसहस्त्राणि दशवर्षसतानि च
Having installed his sons in the kingdom, he devoted himself to meditation on Brahman, thinking 'I am He'; for ten thousand and ten hundred years.
अग्निरुवाच हरिवंशम्प्रवक्षयामि विष्णुनाभ्यम्बुजादजः । ब्रह्मणोत्रिस्ततः सोमः सोमाज्जातः पुरूरवाः
Agni said: I shall now recount the lineage of Hari, born from the lotus-navel of Vishnu: from Brahma came Atri, then Soma, and from Soma was born Pururavas.
तस्मादायुरभूत्तस्मान्नहुषोऽतो ययातिकः। यदुञ्च तुर्वसुन्तस्माद्देवयानी व्यजायत
From him came Ayu, then Nahusha, and then Yayati; from him came Yadu and Turvasu, and from them Devayani was born.
द्रुह्यञ्चानुञ्च पूरुञ्च शर्म्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी। यदोः कुले यादवाश्च वसुदेवस्तदुत्तमः
Druhyu, Anu, and Puru were born, and Sharmishtha, daughter of Vrishaparvan; among the descendants of Yadu were the Yadavas, and Vasudeva was the foremost.
भूवो भारावतारार्थं देवक्यां वसुदेवतः। हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्राः षड्गर्भा योगनिद्रया
For the removal of the earth's burden, from Vasudeva and Devaki were born the six sons, children of Hiranyakashipu, brought by Yogamaya.
विष्णुप्रयुक्तया नीता देवकीजठरं पुरा । अभूच्च सप्तमो गर्भो देवक्या जठराद् बलः
By the power of Vishnu, they were led long ago into Devaki's womb; and the seventh embryo from Devaki's womb became Balarama.
सङ्क्रामितोऽभूद्रोहिण्यां रौहिणेयस्ततो इरिः । कृष्णाष्टम्याञ्च नभसि अर्द्धरात्रे चतुर्भुजः
Transferred into Rohini, he became known as Rauhineya; and on the eighth day of the dark fortnight, at midnight, the four-armed one was born.
देवक्या वसुदेवेन स्तुतो बालो द्विबाहुकः । वसुदेवः कंसभयाद्यसोदाशयनेऽनयत्
The child with two arms was praised by Devaki and Vasudeva; Vasudeva, out of fear of Kamsa, carried him to Yashoda's bed.
यशोदावालिकां गृह्य देवकीशयनेऽनयत् । कंसो बालध्वनिं श्रुत्वा ताञ्चिक्षएप शिलातले
Taking Yashoda's daughter, he placed her on Devaki's bed; Kamsa, hearing the cry of the child, dashed her upon a stone.
वारीतोपि स देवक्या मृत्युर्गर्भोष्टमो मम। श्रुत्वाऽशरीणीं वाचं मत्तो गर्भास्तु मारिताः
Even so, she, the eighth embryo of Devaki, was my death in the form of a child; hearing my bodiless voice, Kamsa killed the embryos.
समर्पितास्तु देवक्या विवाहसमयेरिताः। सा क्षिप्ता बालिका कंसमाकशस्थाब्रवीदिदम्
Those given to Devaki at the time of her marriage were destroyed; but the girl, when hurled, spoke these words to Kamsa from the sky.
किं मया क्षिप्ताया कंस जातो यस्त्वां वधिष्यति। सर्वस्वभूतो देवानां भूभारहरणाय सः
'Why do you cast me down, Kamsa? The one who is born to slay you has already come; he who is the very essence of the gods, come to relieve the burden of the earth.'
इत्युक्त्वा सा च सुम्भादीन् हत्वेन्द्रेण च संस्तुता। आर्या दुर्गा वेदगर्भा अम्बिका भद्रकाल्यपि
Having spoken thus, she, praised by Indra after slaying Sumbha and others, is Arya, Durga, the womb of the Vedas, Ambika, and also Bhadrakali.
भद्रा क्षोम्या क्षेमकरी नैकबाहुर्नमामि ताम्। त्रिसन्ध्यं यः पठेन्नाम सर्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात्
She is Bhadra, Kshomya, Kshema-kari, of many arms—I bow to her; whoever recites her name at the three junctions of the day attains all desires.
कंसोपि पूतनादींश्च प्रैषयद् बालनाशने। यशोदापतिनन्दाय वसुदेवेन चार्पितौ
Kamsa also sent Putana and others to kill the child; Yashoda and Nanda, entrusted by Vasudeva, cared for him.
रक्षणाय च संसादेर्भीतेनैव हि गोकुले। रामकृष्णौ चेरतुस्तौ गोभिर्गोपालकैः सह
For their protection, out of fear, Rama and Krishna dwelled in Gokula, moving about with the cows and cowherd boys.
सर्वस्य जगतः पालौ गोपालौ तौ बभूवतुः। कृष्णश्चोलूखले बद्धो दाम्ना व्यग्रयशोदया
Those two, the protectors of the whole world, became cowherds; Krishna was bound to the mortar by Yashoda with a rope, as she was busy.
यमलार्जुनमध्येऽगाद् भग्नौ च यमलार्जुनौ। परिवृत्तश्च शकटः पादक्षेपात् स्तनार्थिना
He went between the twin Arjuna trees, and the trees were broken; the cart was overturned by the foot of the child seeking his mother's breast.
पूतना स्तनपानेन सा हता हन्तुमुद्यता। वृन्दावनगतः कृष्णः कालियं यमुनाह्रदात्
Putana, who came to kill, was slain as she nursed him; Krishna, having gone to Vrindavana, subdued Kaliya in the Yamuna lake.
जित्वा निः सार्य चाब्धिस्थञ्चकार बलसंस्तुतः। क्षेमं तालवनं चक्रे हत्वा धेनुकगर्द्दभम्
Having defeated and driven out Kaliya from the water, praised for his strength, he made Talavana safe by killing Dhenuka, the ass-demon.
अरिष्टवृषभं हत्वा केशिनं हयरूपिणम्। शक्रोत्सवं परित्यज्य कारितो गोत्रयज्ञकः
After slaying Arishta the bull-demon and Keshi in horse form, he abandoned the Indra festival and caused the cowherds' sacrifice to be performed.
पर्वतं घारयित्वा च शक्राद् वृप्टिर्निवारिता। नमस्कृतो महेन्द्रेण गोविन्दोऽथार्जुनोर्पितः
By lifting the mountain, he stopped the rain sent by Indra; Govinda was then worshipped by Mahendra and offered to Arjuna.
इन्द्रोत्सवस्तु तुष्टेन भूयः कृष्णेन कारितः। रथस्थो मथुराञ्चागात् कंसोक्ताक्रूरसंस्तुतः
Then, pleased, Krishna caused the Indra festival to be performed again; riding in a chariot, he went to Mathura, praised by Akrura as instructed by Kamsa.
गोपीभिरनुरक्ताबिः क्रीडिताभिर्निरीक्षितः। रजकं चाप्रयच्छन्तं इत्वा वस्त्राणि चाग्रहीत्
He was gazed upon by the loving Gopis, who played with him; he defeated the washerman who refused him and took the garments.
सह रामेण मालाभृन्मालाकारे वरन्ददौ। दत्तानुलेपनां कुब्जामृजुं चक्रेऽहनद् गजम्
With Rama, he wore a garland and granted a boon to the garland-maker; he straightened the hunchbacked woman who had anointed him, and killed the elephant.
मत्तं कुवलयापीडं द्वारि रङ्गं प्रविश्य च। कंसादीनां पश्यतां च मञ्चस्थानां नियुद्धकम्
He entered the arena, confronting the intoxicated Kuvalayapida at the gate; in the presence of Kamsa and others seated on the platform, he engaged in wrestling.
