पूजिते पुष्पधूपाद्यैर्द्दत्वा सिद्धान्तपुस्तके। गुरोः पादान्तिकं गत्वा भक्त्या दद्यात् पवित्रकम्
After worshipping with flowers, incense, and the like, having placed the sacred thread on the treatise, one should approach the teacher’s feet and, with devotion, offer the pavitraka.
निर्गत्य वहिराचम्य गोमये मण्डलत्रये। पञ्चगव्यञ्चरुन्दन्तधावनञ्च क्रमाद यजेत् ।.
Having gone out and performed purification outside, in three circles made of cow dung, one should worship in order with pañcagavya, curd, and cleansing.
आचान्तो मन्त्रसम्बद्धः कृतसङ्गीतजागरः। स्वपेदन्तः स्मरन्नीशं बुभुक्षुर्दर्भसंस्तरे
Having purified oneself, connected to mantra, having performed singing and vigil, one should sleep within, remembering the Lord, desiring food, on a bed of darbha grass.
अनेनैव प्रकारेण मुमुक्षुरपि संविशेत्। केवलम्भस्मशय्यायां सोपवासः समाहितः
In this very manner, even one seeking liberation should lie down, with fasting and concentration, on a bed made only of ashes.
ईश्वर उवाच अथ प्रातः समुत्थाय कृतस्नानः समाहितः। कृतसन्ध्यार्चनो मन्त्री प्रवीस्य मखमण्डपम्
The Lord said: Then, rising in the morning, having bathed and composed oneself, having performed the sandhyā worship, the officiant should enter the sacrificial pavilion.
समादाय पवित्राणि अविसर्जितदैवतः। ऐशान्यां भाजने शुद्धे स्थापयेत् कृतमण्डले
Taking the pavitras, without dismissing the deities, one should place them in a clean vessel in the northeast, on the prepared altar.
ततो विसर्ज्य देवेशं निर्म्माल्यमपनीय च। पूर्ववद् भूतले शुद्धे कृत्वाह्नि कमथ द्वयम्
Then, dismissing the Lord of the gods and removing the used offerings, as before, one should place two kamathas on the clean ground for the day.
आदित्यद्वारदिक्पालकुम्भेशानौ शिवेऽनले । नैमित्तिकीं सविस्तारां कुर्य्यात् पूजां विशेषतः
At the sun’s door, in the directions, at the guardians’ pots, at the Lord, at Śiva, and at the fire, one should perform the special, extensive ritual worship.
मन्त्राणां तर्पणं प्रायश्चित्तहोमं शरात्मना । अष्टोत्तरशतं कृत्वा दद्यात् पूर्णाहुतिं शनैः
One should offer libations for the mantras, perform expiatory oblations with the arrow-soul, and, having completed one hundred and eight, gently offer the full oblation.
पवित्रं भानवे दत्वा समाचम्य ददीत च। द्वारपालादिदिक्पालकुम्भवर्द्धनिकादिषु
Having given the pavitra to the sun, having purified oneself, one should also offer it to the doorkeepers, the guardians of the directions, and the pot-increasers.
सन्निधाने ततः शम्भोरुपविश्य निजासने। पवित्रमात्मने दद्याद् गणाय गुरुवह्नये
Then, seated in one’s own seat in the presence of Śambhu, one should offer the pavitra to oneself, to the gaṇa, to the teacher, and to the fire.
ओं कालात्मना त्वया देव यद्दिष्टं मामके विधौ । कृतं क्लिष्टं समुत्सृष्टं कृतं गुप्तञ्च यत् कृतं
Om. O Lord, by you, the soul of time, whatever has been desired in my rite—what has been done, what has been afflicted, what has been abandoned, what has been concealed, and what has been accomplished—
तदस्तु क्लिष्टमक्लिष्टं कृतं क्लिष्टमसंस्कृतम्(४)। सर्वात्मनाऽमुना शम्भो पवित्रेण त्वदिच्छया
Let it be afflicted or un-afflicted, done or not done, afflicted or unrefined; by this pavitra, O Śambhu, according to your wish, let it be purified in every respect.
ओं पूरयमखव्रतं नियमेश्वराय स्वाहा। आत्मतत्त्वे प्रकृत्यन्ते पालिते पद्मयोनिना
Om. Complete the sacrificial vow for the Lord of discipline, svāhā. At the essence of self, at the end of nature, protected by the lotus-born.
मूलं लयान्तमुच्चार्य्य पवित्रेणार्च्चयेच्छिवम्। विद्यातत्त्वे च विद्यान्ते विष्णुकारणपालिते
Reciting the root and dissolution, one should worship Śiva with the pavitra; at the essence of knowledge and at the end of knowledge, protected by the cause of Viṣṇu.
ईश्वरान्तं समुच्चार्य्य पवित्रमधिरोपयेत्। शिवान्ते शिवतत्त्वे च रुद्रकारणपालिते
Reciting the end of Īśvara, one should place the pavitra; at the end of Śiva, at the essence of Śiva, protected by the cause of Rudra.
शिवान्तं मन्त्रमुच्चार्य्य तस्मै देवं पवित्रकम्। सर्वकारणपालेषु शिवमुच्चर्य सुव्रत
Reciting the end of Śiva mantra, one should offer the pavitra to that god; among all the causes, reciting Śiva, O virtuous one.
मूलं लयान्तमुच्चार्य दद्याद् गङ्गावतारकम् । आत्मविद्याशिवैः प्रोक्तं मुमुक्षूणां पवित्रकम्
Reciting the root and dissolution, one should offer the Gaṅgā descent; the pavitra spoken by the knowers of self, knowledge, and Śiva, for those seeking liberation.
विनिर्दिष्टं बुभुक्षूणां शिवतत्त्वात्मभिः क्रमात्। स्वाहान्तं वा नमोऽन्तं वा मन्त्रमेषामुदीरयेत्
As prescribed for those desiring enjoyment, by those established in the essence of Shiva, one should recite their mantra, ending either with 'svāhā' or 'namah', in order.
ओं हां आत्मतत्त्वाधिपतये शिवाय स्वाहा। ओं हां विद्यातत्त्वाधिपतये शिवाय स्वाहा । ओं हौं शिवतत्त्वाधिपतये शिवाय स्वाहा। नत्वा गङ्गावतारन्तु प्रार्थयेत्तं कृताञ्जलिः। त्वङ्गतिः सर्व्वभूतानां संस्थितस्त्वञ्चराचरे
Om hām, to the Lord of the essence of the Self, to Shiva, svāhā; Om hām, to the Lord of the essence of knowledge, to Shiva, svāhā; Om haum, to the Lord of the essence of Shiva, to Shiva, svāhā.
अन्तश्चारेण भूताना द्रष्टा त्वं परमेश्वर। कर्मणा मनसा वाचा त्वत्तो नान्या गतिर्म्मम ।। मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं द्रव्यहीनञ्च यत् कृतम्। जपहोमार्च्चनैर्हीनं कृतं नित्यं मया तव
Through your inner presence, you are the witness of beings, O Supreme Lord; by action, mind, and speech, I have no other refuge but you. Whatever has been done lacking mantra, lacking ritual, lacking substance, whatever has been done lacking recitation, offering, or worship, has always been done by me for you.
अकृतं वाक्यहीनं च तत् पूरय महेश्वर । सपूतत्वं परेशान पवित्रं पापनाशनम्
Whatever has been left undone or lacking in words, O Great Lord, complete that; O Supreme Lord, grant purity, sanctity, and destruction of sin.
त्वया पवित्रितं सर्व जगत् स्थावरजङ्गमम्। खण्डितं यन्मया देव व्रतं वैकल्पयोगतः
By you, all the world, both stationary and moving, is purified; whatever vow has been broken by me, O Lord, through negligence or error,
एकीभवतु तत् सर्वं तवाज्ञासूत्रगुम्फितम्। जपं निवेद्य देवस्य भक्त्या स्तोत्रं विधाय च
Let all that become unified, woven together by your command; having offered recitation to the Lord and composed a hymn with devotion,
नत्वा तु गुरुणादिष्टं गृह्णीयान्नियमन्नरः। चतुर्म्मासं त्रिमासं वा त्र्यहमेकाहमेव च
Having bowed, one should accept the discipline as instructed by the guru; whether for four months, three months, three days, or even one day.
प्रणम्य क्षमयित्वेशं गत्वा कुण्डान्तिकं व्रती। पावलकस्थे शिवेऽप्येवं पवित्राणां चतुष्टयम्
Having bowed and sought forgiveness from the Lord, the vow-holder should go to the vicinity of the altar; even in the presence of Shiva established in the fire, thus are the four purifications.
समारोप्य समभ्यर्च्च्य पुष्पधूपाक्षतादिभिः। अन्तर्बलिं पवित्रञ्च रुद्रदिभ्यो निवेदयेत्
Having placed and worshipped with flowers, incense, rice, and so forth, one should offer the inner oblation and the purification to Rudra and others.
प्रविश्यान्तः शिवं स्तुत्वा सप्रणामं क्षमापयेत्। प्रायश्चित्तकृतं होमं कृत्वा हुत्वा च पायसं
Entering within, having praised Shiva with prostration, one should seek forgiveness; having performed the expiatory offering, and having offered rice pudding,
शनैः पूर्णाहुतिं दत्वा वह्निस्थं विसृजेच्छिवं। होमं व्याहृतिमिः कृत्वा रुन्ध्यान्निष्ठुरयाऽनलं
Gently giving the full oblation, one should release Shiva established in the fire; having performed the offering with the sacred utterances, one should extinguish the fire without harshness.
अग्न्यादिभ्यस्ततो दद्यादाहुतीनां चतुष्टयं। दिक्पतिभ्यस्ततो दद्यात् सपवित्रं बहिर्बलिं
Then, one should give four oblations to Agni and others; then, one should give the purification and the external offering to the guardians of the directions.
