पात्रं नीराजनार्थं च तथोद्वर्त्तनमानिले। गन्धुपुष्पान्वितं पात्रमैशान्यां पात्रके न्यसेत्
A vessel for waving lights and for anointing with fragrant substances should be placed in the northeast, filled with fragrance and flowers.
मुरामांसीं चामलकं सहदेवां निशादिकम्। षष्टिदीपान्न्यसेदष्टौ न्यसेन्नीराजनाय च
Murā, māṃsī, āmalaka, sahadevī, and niśādika, as well as sixty lamps, should be set out, and eight for waving lights.
शङ्खंहचक्रञ्च श्रीवत्सं कुलिशं पङ्कजादिकम्। हेमादिपात्रे कृत्वा तु नानावर्णादिपुष्पकम्
A conch, discus, Śrīvatsa, thunderbolt, lotus, and the like should be placed in a golden vessel, along with flowers of various colors and kinds.
भगवानुवाच एशान्यां जययेत् कुण्डं गुरुर्व्वह्निञ्च वैष्णवम्। गायत्र्याष्टशतं हुत्वा सम्पातविधिना घटान्
The Blessed Lord said: In the northeast, the teacher should establish the fire-pit and the Vaiṣṇava fire; after offering one hundred and eight oblations with the Gāyatrī, he should sprinkle the pots according to the prescribed method.
प्रोक्षयेत् कारुशालायां शिल्पिभिमुर्त्तिर्व्रजेत्। तुर्य्यशबदैः कौतुकञ्च बन्धयेद्दक्षिणे करे
He should sprinkle in the workshop, and the image-makers should proceed; with auspicious sounds, he should tie the protective thread on the right hand.
विष्णवे शिपिविष्टेति ऊर्णासूत्रेण सर्षपैः। पट्टवस्त्रेण कर्त्तव्यं देशिकस्यापि कौतुकम्
For Viṣṇu, reciting 'Śipiviṣṭa', with a thread of wool and mustard seeds, and with a silk cloth, the teacher should also prepare the protective thread.
मण्डपे प्रतिमां स्थाप्य सवस्त्रां पूजितां स्तुवन्। नमस्तेर्च्यें सुरेशानि प्रणीते विश्वकर्म्मण
Having placed the image in the pavilion, adorned with garments and worshipped, he should praise: 'O Lord of the gods, I bow to you, O one fashioned by Viśvakarman.'
प्रभाविताशेषजगद्धात्रि तुभ्यं नमो नमः। त्वयि सम्पूजयामीशे नारायणमनामयम्
'O sustainer of the universe, who empowers all, I bow to you again and again; in you, O Lord, I worship Nārāyaṇa, the flawless one.'
रहिता शिल्पिदोषैस्त्वमृद्धियुक्ता सदा भव। एवं विज्ञाप्य प्रतिमां नयेत्तां स्नानमण्डपम्
'May you always be free from faults in workmanship and endowed with prosperity.' Having thus addressed the image, he should lead it to the bathing pavilion.
शिल्पिनन्तोषयेद्द्रव्यैर्गुरवे गां प्रदापयेत्। चित्रं देवेति मन्त्रेण नेत्रे चोन्मीलयेत्ततः
He should satisfy the artisans with gifts and have a cow given to the teacher; with the mantra 'O Deva, O Beautiful One', he should then open the eyes.
अग्निर्ज्योतीति दृष्टिञ्च दद्याद्वै भद्रपीठके। ततः शक्लानि पुष्पाणि घृतं सिद्धार्थकं तथा
He should bestow the gaze, saying 'Agni is light', upon the auspicious seat; then offer white flowers, clarified butter, and white mustard seeds.
दूर्व्वां कुशाग्रं देवस्य दद्याच्छिरसि देशिकः। मधुवातेति मन्त्रेण नेत्रे चाभ्यञ्जयेद् गुरुः
The teacher should place dūrvā grass and the tip of kuśa grass on the deity's head; with the mantra 'Madhuvāta', the teacher should anoint the eyes.
हिरण्यगर्भमन्त्रेण इमं मेति च कीर्त्तयेत् घृतेनाभ्यञ्जयेत् पश्चात् पठन् घृतवतीं पुनः
With the Hiraṇyagarbha mantra, one should recite 'imaṃ me' and then anoint with ghee; afterwards, reciting, again anoint with ghee.
मसूरपिष्टेनोद्वर्त्य अतो देवेति कीर्त्तयन्। क्षालयेदुष्णतीर्थजैः स्नानं पावमानीति रत्नजैः
Having rubbed with flour of lentils, reciting 'ato deve', one should wash with warm water from sacred places; for bathing, recite 'pavamāni' with waters from gems.
द्रुपदादिवेत्यनुलिम्पेदापो हिष्ठेति सेचयेत्। नदीजैस्तीर्थजैः स्नानं पावमानीति रत्नजै
Anoint with 'drupadādi' and sprinkle with water reciting 'āpo hiṣṭha'; for bathing, use river or sacred waters, reciting 'pavamāni' with gem waters.
समुद्रं गच्छ चन्दनैस्तीर्थमृत्कलशेन च। शन्नो देवीः स्नापयेच्च गायत्र्याप्युष्णवारिणा
Go to the ocean with sandalwood and a pot of sacred earth; bathe with the Gayatri mantra and warm water, reciting 'śanno devīḥ'.
पञ्चमृद्भिर्हिरण्येति स्नापयेत्परमेश्वरम्। सिकताद्भिरिमं मेति वल्मीकोदघटेन च
Bathe the Supreme Lord with five kinds of earth, reciting 'hiraṇya'; with sand, reciting 'imaṃ me', and with an ant-hill or mound pot.
तद्धिष्णोरिति ओषध्यद्भिर्था ओषधीति मन्त्रतः। यझायज्ञेति काषायैः पञ्चभिर्गव्यकैस्ततः
Recite 'taddhiṣṇor' and bathe with medicinal herbs and water, reciting 'thā oṣadhi'; then, with five cow products, recite 'yajhāyajña'.
पयः पृथिव्यां मन्त्रेण याः फलिना फलाम्बुभिः। विश्वतश्चक्षुः सौम्येन पूर्वेण कलसेन च
With the mantra 'payaḥ pṛthivyāṃ', bathe with the waters of fruit-bearing plants; with the 'viśvataścakṣuḥ' mantra, use the eastern pot.
सोमं राजानमित्येवं विष्णो रराटं दक्षतः। हंसः शुचिः पश्चिमेन कुर्य्यादुद्वर्त्तनं हरेः
Reciting 'somaṃ rājānam', bathe Viṣṇu on the right; with 'haṃsaḥ śuciḥ', perform the anointing of Hari on the west.
मूर्द्धानन्दिवमन्त्रेण धात्रीं मांसी च के ददेत् । मानस्तोकेति मन्त्रेण गन्धद्वारेति गन्धकैः
With the 'mūrddhānandivam' mantra, offer dhātrī and māṃsī; with the 'mānastoka' mantra, offer fragrant substances, reciting 'gandhadvāre'.
इदमापेति च घटैरेकाशीतिपदस्थितैः। एह्येहि भगवन् विष्णो लोकानुग्रहकारक
Reciting 'idamāpeti', use pots with eighty-one verses; 'ehyehi bhagavan viṣṇo', O Viṣṇu, benefactor of the worlds.
यज्ञभागं गृहाणेमं वासुदेव नमोस्तु ते। अनेनावाह्य देवेशं कुर्यात् कौतुकमोचनम्
Receive this share of the sacrifice, O Vāsudeva, homage to you; having invoked the Lord with this, perform the removal of the auspicious thread.
मुञ्चामि त्वेति सूक्तेन देशिकस्यापि मोचयेत्। हिरण्मयेन पाद्यं दद्यादतो देवेति चार्घ्यकम्
Reciting 'muñcāmi tveti', release even the teacher; offer golden water for washing the feet, and then arghya, reciting 'ato deve'.
मधुवाता मधुपर्क्कं मयि गृह्मामि चाचमेत्। अक्षन्नमीमदन्तेति किरेद्दूर्वाक्षतं बुधः
Recite 'madhuvātā', offer madhuparka, and sip, saying 'mayi gṛhmāmi'; the wise one should offer dūrvā grass and rice, reciting 'akṣannamīmadanteti'.
काण्डान्निर्म्मञ्छनं कुर्य्याद्वन्धं गन्धवतीति च। उन्नयामीति माल्यञ्च इदं विष्णु पवित्रकम्
Prepare a seat with stalks, reciting 'gandhavatīti'; offer a garland, reciting 'unnayāmīti', and this sacred thread to Viṣṇu.
बृहस्पते वस्त्रयुग्मं वेदाहमित्युत्तरीयकम्। महाव्रतेन सकलीपुष्पं चौषधयः क्षिपेत्
Offer a pair of garments, reciting 'bṛhaspate'; for the upper cloth, recite 'vedāham'; with the 'mahāvrata' mantra, offer all flowers and herbs.
धूपं दद्याद्धूरसीति विभ्राट्सूक्तेन चाञ्चनम्। युञ्जन्तीति च तिलकं दीर्घायुष्ट्वे ति माल्यकम्
Offer incense, reciting 'dhūrasīti', and apply collyrium with the 'vibhrāṭ' hymn; for tilaka, recite 'yuñjantīti', and for a garland, 'dīrghāyuṣṭve'.
इन्द्रच्छत्रेति छत्रन्तु आदर्शन्तु विराजतः। चामरन्तु विकर्णेन भूषां रथन्तरेण च
Reciting 'indracchatra', offer an umbrella; for the mirror, recite 'virājataḥ'; for the fan, 'vikarṇena', and for ornaments, 'rathantara'.
व्यजनं वायुदैवत्यैर्मुञ्चामि त्वेति पुष्पकम्। वेदाद्यैः संस्तुतिं कुर्य्याद्धरेः पुरुषसूक्ततः
Offer a fan with the deities of wind, reciting 'muñcāmi tveti', and flowers; with Vedic hymns, perform the praise of Hari from the Puruṣa Sūkta.
