अङ्गुलीयप्रभृतिभिर्मूत्तिपान् वलयादिभिः। कुण्डे कुण्डे स्थापयेच्च मूर्त्तिपांस्तत्र पारगान्
With rings and the like, and bracelets and such, the image-bearers should be established in each enclosure, those who are accomplished therein.
चतुष्कोणे चार्द्धकोणे वर्तुले पद्मसन्निभेः। पूर्वादौ तोरणार्थन्तु पिप्पलोडुम्बरौ वटम्
In the square, in the half-square, in the circle, and in the lotus-shaped (enclosure); at the beginning in the east, for the gateway, use the pippala, udumbara, and vaṭa trees.
प्लक्षं सुशोभनं पूर्वं सुभद्रन्दक्षतोरणम्। सुकर्म च सुहोत्रञ्च आप्ये सौम्ये समुच्छयम्
The plakṣa tree, beautiful, should be placed first, and the subhadra and andaka trees for the gateway; sukarman and suhotra for the watery and gentle directions, and for the elevation.
पञ्चहस्तं तु संस्थाप्य स्योनापृथ्वीति पूजयेत्। तोरणस्तम्भमूले तु कलशान्मङ्गलाङ्कुशन्
Having established five hastas, one should worship Syonā and Pṛthivī; at the base of the gateway pillar, water pots with auspicious sprouts should be placed.
प्रदद्यादुपरिष्टाच्च कुर्य्याच्चक्रं सुदर्शनम्। पञ्चहस्तप्रमाणन्तु ध्वजं कुर्य्याद्विचक्षणः
One should offer them above, and also make a Sudarśana wheel; the banner should be made with a measure of five hastas by the wise.
वैपुल्यं चास्य कुर्वीत षोडशाङ्गुलसम्मितम्। सप्तहस्तोच्छितं वास्य कुर्य्यात् कुण्डं सुरोत्तम
Its breadth should be made sixteen aṅgulas; the best enclosure should be made seven hastas high.
अरुणोग्निनिभश्चैव कृष्णः शुक्लोथ पीतकः। रक्तवर्णस्तथा श्वेतः श्वेतवर्णादिकक्रमात्
Of the color of dawn-fire, black, white, or yellow; red in color, and also white, in order from white and so on.
कुमुदः कुमुदाक्षश्च पुण्डरीकोथ वामनः। शङ्कुकर्णः सर्व्वनेत्रः सुमुखः सुप्रतिष्ठितः
Kumuda, Kumudākṣa, Puṇḍarīka, and Vāmana; Śaṅkukarṇa, Sarvanetra, Sumukha, and Supratiṣṭhita.
पूज्या कोटिगुणैर्युक्ताः पूर्व्वाद्या ध्वजदेवताः। जलाढकसुपूरास्तु पक्कविम्बोपमा घटाः
The banner deities, beginning from the east, are to be worshipped with offerings a crore times greater; the water pots should be filled to the brim, round and resembling a ripe fruit.
अष्टविंशाधिकशतं कालमण्डनवर्जिताः। सहिरण्या वस्त्रकण्ठाः सोदकास्तोरणाद् बहिः
One hundred and twenty-eight pots, free from any decoration, adorned with gold and cloth around the neck, and filled with water, are to be placed outside the gateway.
घटाः स्थाप्याश्च पूर्वादौ वेदिकायाश्च कोणगान्। चतुरः स्थापयेत् कुम्भानाजिघ्ने ति चमन्त्रतः
The pots should be set at the corners of the altar, starting from the east; four pots are to be placed, consecrated with mantras and untouched by the hand.
कुम्भेष्वावाह्य शक्रादीन् पूर्वादौ पूजयेत् क्रमात्। इन्द्रागच्छ देवराज वज्रहस्त गजस्थिता
Having invoked Indra and the others into the pots, one should worship them in order from the east: 'Indra, come, O king of the gods, wielder of the thunderbolt, mounted on the elephant.'
पूर्वद्वारञ्च मे रक्ष देवैः सह नमोस्तु ते। त्रातारमिन्द्रमन्त्रेण अर्चयित्वा यजेद् बुधः
'Protect my eastern gate together with the gods; salutations to you.' Having worshipped Indra, the protector, with the appropriate mantra, the wise should offer sacrifice.
आगच्छाग्रे शक्तियुत छागस्थ बलसंयुत। रक्षाग्नेयीं दिशं देवैः पूजां गृह्ण नमोस्तु ते
'Come forth, armed with the spear, mounted on the goat, endowed with strength; accept this worship with the gods for the southeastern direction. Salutations to you.'
अग्निर्मूर्द्धेतिमन्त्रेण यजेद्वा अग्नये नमः। महिषस्थ यमागच्छ पण्डहस्त महाबल
One should worship Agni with the mantra 'Agni is the head,' or with 'Obeisance to Agni.' 'Yama, come, mounted on the buffalo, holding the staff, mighty in strength.'
रक्ष त्वं दक्षिणद्वारं वैवस्वत नमोस्तु ते। वैवस्वतं सङ्गमनभित्यनेन यजेद्यमम्
'Protect the southern gate, O Vaivasvata; salutations to you.' One should worship Yama, the gatherer, with this mantra.
नैर्ऋ तागच्छ खङ्गाढ्य बलवाहनसंयुत । इदमर्घ्यमिदं पाद्यं रक्ष त्वं नैर्ऋतीं दिशम्
'Nairṛta, come, bearing the sword, accompanied by a powerful vehicle; here is arghya, here is water for the feet; protect the southwestern direction.'
एष ते नैर्ऋते मन्त्रेण यजेदर्घ्यादिभिर्नरः। मकरारूढ वरुण पाशहस्त महाबल
With the mantra for Nairṛta, a man should worship with arghya and other offerings: 'Varuṇa, mounted on the makara, holding the noose, mighty in strength.'
आगच्छ पश्चिमं द्वारं रक्ष रक्ष नमोस्तु ते। उरुं हि राजा वरुणं यजेदर्घ्यादिभिर्गुरुः
'Come, protect the western gate, protect, protect; salutations to you.' The teacher should worship King Varuṇa with arghya and other offerings.
आग्च्छ वायो सबल ध्वजहस्त सवाहन। वायव्यं रक्ष देवैस्त्वं समरुद्भिर्नमोस्तु ते
'Come, O Vāyu, powerful, banner in hand, with your vehicle; protect the northwestern direction with the gods and the Maruts; salutations to you.'
वात इत्यादिभिश्चार्चेदोन्नमो वायवेपि वा। अगच्छ सोम सबल गदाहस्त सवाहन
He should worship with mantras beginning with 'Vāta,' or with 'Obeisance to Vāyu.' 'Soma, come, powerful, mace in hand, with your vehicle.'
रक्ष त्वमुत्तरद्वारं सकुवेर नमोस्तु ते। सोमं राजानमिति वा यजेत्सोमाय वै नमः
'Protect the northern gate, together with Kubera; salutations to you.' Or, worship Soma the king with the mantra 'Obeisance to Soma.'
आगच्छेशान सबल शूलहस्त वृषस्थित। यज्ञमण्डपस्यैशानीं दिशं रक्ष नमोस्तु ते
'Come, Īśāna, powerful, trident in hand, mounted on the bull; protect the northeastern direction of the sacrificial pavilion; salutations to you.'
ईशानमस्येति यजेदीशानाय नमोऽपि वा। ब्रह्मन्नागच्छ हंसस्य स्रुक्स्रुवव्यग्रहस्तक
He should worship Īśāna with the mantra 'Īśānamasya,' or with 'Obeisance to Īśāna.' 'Brahman, come, swan-mounted, holding the ladle and spoon.'
सलोकोद्र्ध्वां दिशं रक्ष यज्ञस्याज नमोस्तु ते। हिरण्यगर्भेति यजेन्नमस्ते ब्रह्मणेपि वा
'Protect the upward direction, along with your world; O unborn one of the sacrifice, salutations to you.' He should worship Hiraṇyagarbha with the mantra 'Hiraṇyagarbha,' or with 'Salutations to Brahman.'
अनन्तागच्छ चक्राढ्य कूर्म्मस्थाहिगणेश्वर। अधोदिशं रक्ष रक्ष अनन्तेश नमोस्तु ते
'Ananta, come, bearing the discus, lord of the serpents, mounted on the tortoise; protect the downward direction, protect, protect; O lord Ananta, salutations to you.'
नमोस्तु सर्पेति यजेदनन्ताय नमोपि वा
One should offer obeisance by saying 'Salutations to the serpent,' or perform a sacrifice to Ananta, or simply offer salutations.
भगवानुवाच भूमेः परिग्रहं कुर्य्यात् क्षिपेद् व्रीहींश्च सर्षपान्। नारसिंहेन रक्षोघ्नान् प्रोक्षयेत् पञ्चगव्यतः
The Blessed Lord said: One should demarcate the ground, scatter rice and mustard seeds, and sprinkle them with five products of the cow, reciting the Nārasiṃha mantra for protection from evil.
भूमिं घटे तु सम्पूज्य सरत्ने साङ्गकं हरिम्। अस्त्रमन्त्रेण करकं तत्र चाष्टशतं यजेत्
After duly honoring the ground with a pot, along with gems and the proper articles, and the color yellow, one should worship with the weapon-mantra and offer one hundred and eight oblations there.
अच्छिन्नधारया सिञ्चन् व्रीहीन् संस्कृत्य धारयेत्। प्रदक्षिणं परिभ्राम्य कलशं विकिरोपरि
With an unbroken stream, one should sprinkle the prepared rice and keep it; then, circling the pot to the right, scatter it over the area.
