एकैकलिङ्गमद्येषु त्रीणी च पादशः। लिङ्गानि घटयेद्धीमान् षटसु चाश्टोत्तरेषु च
Among the first, there is one liṅga each; in the feet, three each; the wise should arrange the liṅgas in six and also in one hundred and eight.
स्थिरदीर्घप्रमेयात्तु द्वारगर्भकरात्मिका। भागेशञ्चाप्यमीशञ्च देवेज्यन्तुल्यसंज्ञितम्
Of fixed, long, and measurable form, with the nature of door, womb, and hand; and with the portion of the lord and the lord himself, it is called equal to the deity to be worshipped.
चत्वारि लिङ्गरुपाणि विष्कम्बेण तु लक्षयेत्। दीर्घमायान्वितं कृत्वा लिङ्गं कुर्य्यात् त्रिरूपकम्
One should mark four forms of the liṅga by its diameter; making it endowed with length, the liṅga should be made threefold in form.
चतुरष्टाष्टवृत्तञ्च तत्तवत्रयगुणात्मकम् । लिङ्गानामीप्सितं दैर्ध्यं तेन कृत्वा ङ्गुलानि वै
With four, eight, and eight circles, possessing the qualities of the three tattvas; the desired length of the liṅgas is thus made in fingers.
ध्वजाद्यायैः सुरैर्भूतैः शिखिभिर्व्वा हरेत् कृतिम्। तान्यङ्गुलानि चच्छेषं लक्षयेच्च शुभाशुभम्
By the gods, beings, or peacocks, beginning with the banner, one should take the measure; those fingers remaining should be noted as auspicious or inauspicious.
ध्वजाद्या ध्वजसिंहेभवृषा श्रेष्ठाः परे शुभाः। खरेषु षड्जगान्धारपञ्चमाः शुभदायकाः
Among those beginning with the banner, the banner, lion, and bull are the best and auspicious; among the donkeys, the ṣaḍja, gāndhāra, and pañcama are givers of good fortune.
भूतेषु च शूबा भूः स्यादग्निष्वाहवनीयकः। उत्तायामस्य चार्द्धाशे नागांशैर्भाजिते क्रमात्
Among the elements, Bhū is auspicious, and among fires, the āhavanīya is so; in the half portion of the raised measure, divided successively by the nāga parts.
रसभूतां शषष्ठांशत्र्यंशाधिकशरैर्भवेत्। आढ्यानाध्यसुरेज्यार्कतुल्यानाञ्चतुरस्रता
With the portions of rasa and elements, and with arrows exceeding by sixty-three parts, among the wealthy, the inferior, the worshipped, and those equal to the sun, the four-sided form is found.
पञ्चमं वर्द्धमानाख्यं व्यासान्नाहप्रवृद्धितः। द्विधा भेदा बहून्यत्र वक्ष्यन्ते विश्वकर्म्मतः
The fifth is called increasing, due to the growth from the diameter and the day; the twofold divisions and many others will be explained here according to Viśvakarman.
आढ्यादीनां त्रिधा स्थौल्याद्यवधूतं तदष्यथ । त्रिधा हस्ताकज्जिनाख्यञ्च युक्तं सर्वसमेन च ।। २९ पञ्चविंशतिलिङ्गानि नाद्ये देवार्च्चिते तथा। पञ्चसप्तभिरेकत्वाज्जिनैर्भक्तैर्भवन्ति
Of the wealthy and others, the threefold thickness is thus established; the threefold hand, heel, and so on, joined with all equally. There are twenty-five liṅgas in the first, as worshipped by the gods; by fives and sevens, and by unity, they are made by the devoted.
चतुर्दशसहस्त्राणि चतुर्दशशतानि च। एवमष्टाङऱ्गुलविस्तारो नवैककरगर्भतः ।। ३१ तेषां कोणार्द्धकोणस्थैश्चिन्त्यात् कोणानि सूत्रकैः। विस्तारं मध्यतः कृत्वा स्थाप्यं वा मध्यतस्त्रयम्
Fourteen thousand and fourteen hundred; thus, with a width of eight fingers and a womb of nine single hands. Of these, with half and quarter corners, one should consider the corners with threads; making the width in the middle, one should also place three in the middle.
विभागादूद्र्ध्वमष्टास्रो द्व्यष्टास्रः स्याच्छिवांशकः। पादाज्जान्तको ब्रह्मा नाभ्यन्तो विष्णुरित्यतः
By division, above is eight-sided, and twice eight-sided is the portion of Śiva; from the foot to the end is Brahmā, and within the navel is Viṣṇu, thus.
मूद्र्ध्वान्तो भूतभागेशो व्यक्तेऽव्यक्ते च तद्वति। पञ्चलिङ्गव्यवस्थायां शिरो वर्त्तुलमुच्यते
The lord of beings, who is above darkness, is present in both the manifest and unmanifest; in the arrangement of the five marks, the head is said to be round.
छत्राभं कुक्कुटाभं वा बालेन्दुप्रतिमाकृतिः । एकैकस्य चतुर्भेदैः काम्यभेदात् फलं वदे
The head may resemble an umbrella or a rooster, or have the form of a crescent moon; each of these, having four variations, yields results according to their desired distinctions.
लिङ्गमस्तकविस्तारं वसुभक्तन्तु कारयेत्। आद्यभागं चतुर्द्धा तु विस्तारोच्छायतो भजेत्
The expanse of the head of the liṅga should be made with due portions; the foremost part should be divided into four, according to breadth and height.
चत्वारि तत्र सूत्राणि भागभागानुपातनात्। पुण्डरीकन्तु भागेन विशालाख्यं विलोपनात्
There, four threads are to be used, proportioned by their respective parts; by one part is the lotus, by omission the wide one is named.
त्रिशातनात्तु श्रीवत्सं शत्रुकृद्वेदलोपनात्। शिरः सर्वसमे श्रेष्ठं कुक्कुटाभं सुराह्वये
By three parts is the Śrīvatsa, by omission of the enemy's part is the split; among all, the head equal on every side is best, and the rooster-shaped is called divine.
चतुर्भागात्मके लिङ्गे त्रपुषं द्वयलोपनात्। अनाद्यस्य शिरः प्रोक्तमर्द्धचन्द्रं शिरः श्रृणु
In the liṅga of four parts, by omitting two, the head is said to be of tin; for the beginningless one, the head is called half-moon—listen about the head.
अंशात् प्रान्ते युगांशैश्च त्वेकहान्यामृताक्षकम् । पूर्णवालेन्दुकुमुदं द्वित्रिवेदक्षयात् क्रमात्
From a portion at the end, with pairs of portions, in one day is the immortal mark; the full-moon, crescent, and lotus arise in order by the loss of two or three parts.
चतुस्त्रिरेकवदनं सुखलिङ्गमतः श्रृणु। पूजाभागं प्रकर्त्तव्यं मर्त्त्यग्निपदकल्पितम्
Now hear about the auspicious liṅga with four, three, or one face; the portion for worship should be made as prescribed for mortals, fire, and the feet.
अर्क्काशंपूर्ववत् त्यक्त्वा षट स्थानानि विवर्त्तयेत्। शिरोन्नतिः प्रकर्त्तव्या ललाटं नासिका ततः
Having set aside the sun-like form as before, one should fashion six positions; the elevation of the head should be made, then the forehead and nose.
वदनं चिवुकं ग्रीवा युगभागैर्भुजाक्षिभिः। कराभ्यां मुकुलीकृत्य प्रतिमायाः प्रमाणतः
The face, chin, and neck are to be formed with portions for the arms and eyes; with the hands shaped like buds, according to the measure of the image.
मुखं प्रति समः कार्या विस्तारादष्टमांशतः। चतुर्मुखं मया प्रोक्तं त्रिमुखञ्चोच्यते श्रृणु
The face should be made equal, at one-eighth of the breadth; I have described the four-faced, now hear about the three-faced.
कर्णपादाधिकास्तस्य ललाटादीनि निर्दिशेत्। भुजौ चतुर्भिर्भागैम्तु कर्त्तव्यौ पञ्चिमोर्जितम्
For that one, the ears and feet are more prominent; the forehead and other features should be indicated, and the two arms made with four parts, the fifth being omitted.
विस्तरादष्टमांशेन मुखानां प्रतिनिर्गमः। एकवक्त्रं तथा कार्य्यं पूर्वस्यां सौम्यलोचनम्
The emergence of the faces is by one-eighth of the breadth; likewise, the single face should be made, with gentle eyes in the eastern direction.
ललाटनासिकावक्त्रग्नीवायाञ्च विवर्त्तयेत्। भुजाच्च पञ्चमांशेन भुजहीनं विवर्तयेत्
The forehead, nose, mouth, and neck should be fashioned; and the arms, by a fifth part, should be made, or omitted if without arms.
विस्तारस्य षडंशेन मुखैर्निर्गमनं हितम्। सर्वषां मुखलिङ्गानां त्रपुषं वाथ कुक्कुटम्
The emergence of the faces is proper by one-sixth of the breadth; for all liṅgas with faces, tin or rooster form is prescribed.
भगवानुवाच अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि प्रतिमानान्तु पिण्डिकाम्। दैर्घ्येण प्रतिमातुल्या तदर्द्धेन तु विस्तृता
The Blessed Lord said: Now I shall explain the pedestal of the images; its length should be equal to the image, and its breadth half of that.
उच्छितायामतोर्द्धेन सुविस्तारार्द्धभागतः। तृतीयेन तु वा तुल्यं तत्त्रिभागेण मेखला
Its height should be half of its length, or, if very broad, a third; the girdle should be by a third part.
खातं च तत्प्रमाणं तु किञ्चिदुत्तरतो नतम्। विस्तारस्य चतुर्थेन प्रणालस्य विनिर्गमः
The hollow should be measured accordingly, slightly inclined to the north; the outlet for the channel should be by a fourth of the breadth.
