धमनी तापनी चैव रागिणी विकृतानना। वायुवेगा बृहत्कुक्षिर्विकृता विश्वरूपिका
Dhamanī, Tāpanī, Rāgiṇī, Vikṛtānanā, Vāyuvegā, Bṛhatkukṣī, Vikṛtā, and Viśvarūpikā.
यमजिह्वा जयन्ती च दुर्जया च जयन्तिका। विडाली रेवती चैव पूतना विजयान्तिका
Yamajihvā, Jayantī, Durjayā, Jayantikā, Viḍālī, Revatī, Pūtanā, and Vijayāntikā.
अष्टहस्ताश्चतुर्हस्ता इच्छास्त्राः सर्वसिद्धिदाः। भैरवश्चार्कहस्तः स्यात् कूर्परास्यो जटेन्दुभृत्
Some have eight hands, some four; they wield weapons as they wish and grant all accomplishments. Bhairava holds the sun in his hand, has elbows for a mouth, and wears matted hair with the moon.
खड्गाङ्कुशकुठारेषुविश्वाभयभृदेकतः। चापत्रिशूलखट्वाङ्गपाशकार्द्धवरोद्यतः
They bear swords, goads, axes, and weapons that dispel all fear; some are armed with bows, tridents, clubs, nooses, and half-raised shields.
गजचर्मधरो द्वाभ्यां कृत्तिवासोहिभूषितः। प्रेताशनो मातृमध्ये पूज्यः पञ्चाननोथवा
Wearing elephant skin with two hands, adorned with serpent ornaments, consuming ghosts, honored among mothers, and sometimes five-faced.
अविलोमाग्निपर्यन्तं दीर्घाष्टकैकभेदितम्। तत्षडङ्गानि जात्यन्तैरन्वितं च क्रमाद् यजेत्
From Aviloma to Agni, divided into eight long forms; one should worship these, each with their six limbs, accompanied by their respective classes, in order.
मन्दिराग्निदलारुढं सुवर्णरसकान्वितम्। नादविन्द्विन्दुसंयुक्तंमातृनाथाङ्गदीपितम्
Mounted upon a temple firewood beam, adorned with golden essence, joined with sound, circle, and drop, and illumined by the mothers and the Lord.
वीरभद्रो वृषारूढो मात्रग्रे स चतुर्मुखः। गौरी तु द्विभुजा त्र्यक्षा शूलिनी दर्पणान्विता
Vīrabhadra, riding a bull, stands at the front of the mothers, four-faced; Gaurī is two-armed, three-eyed, bearing a trident and a mirror.
शूलं गलन्तिका* कुण्डी वरदा च चतुर्भुजा। अब्जस्था ललिता स्कन्दगणादर्शशलाकया
She holds a trident, a water pot, a pitcher, and grants boons, being four-armed; Lalitā stands on a lotus, with Skanda's attendants holding a mirror-rod.
चण्डिका दशहस्ता स्यात् खड्गशूलारिशक्तिधृक्। दक्षे वामे नागपाश चर्माङ्कुशकुठारकम्
Caṇḍikā is ten-handed, bearing sword, trident, enemy-slaying spear; on the left, a serpent-noose, hide, goad, and axe.
धनुः सिंहे च महिषः शूलेन प्रहतोग्रतः
A bow, a lion, and a buffalo are present, the buffalo struck in front by the trident.
लिङ्गमानादिकथनम् भगवानुवाच वक्ष्याम्यन्यप्रकारेण लिङ्गमानादिकं श्रृणु। वक्ष्ये लवणजं लिङ्गं घृतजं बुद्धिवर्द्धनम्
The Lord said: I shall explain in another way the account of the liṅga from the beginning; listen. I will describe the salt-made liṅga, and the ghee-made, which increases intelligence.
भूतये वस्त्रलिङ्गन्तु लिङ्गन्तात्कालिकं विदुः। पक्कापक्वं मृण्मयं स्यादपक्कात् पक्क्जं वरम्
For prosperity, the liṅga made of cloth is known as temporary; among cooked and uncooked, the clay one is best, and among uncooked, the cooked is preferable.
ततो दारुमयं पुण्यं दारुजात् शैलजं वरम्। शैलाद्वरं तु मुक्ताजं ततो लौहं सुवर्णजम्
Next, the wooden one is meritorious, and among woods, the stone one is best; better than stone is the pearl one, then the iron and the gold ones.
राजतं कीर्त्तितं ताम्रं पैत्तलं भुक्तिमुक्तिदम्। रङ्गजं रसलिङ्गञ्च भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं वरम्
The silver one is praised, the copper and bell-metal ones grant enjoyment and liberation; the painted and the mercury liṅga are also excellent for enjoyment and liberation.
रसजं रसलोहादिरत्नगर्भन्तु वर्धयेत्। मानादि नेष्टं सिद्धादि स्थापितेथ स्वयम्भुवि
The mercury one, and those made of amalgamated metals and gems, should be increased; the liṅga made by measure is not desired, nor the perfected one, but the self-manifested is to be established.
वामे च स्वेच्छया तेषां पीठप्रासादकल्पना। पूजयेत् सूर्य्यविम्बस्थं दर्पणे प्रतिविम्बितम्
On the left, as one wishes, the arrangement of pedestal and shrine is made; one should worship the liṅga reflected in a mirror, situated in the sun's disc.
पूज्यो हरस्तु सर्वत्र लिङ्गे पूर्णार्च्चनं भवेत्। हस्तोत्तरविधं शैलं दारुजं तद्वदेव हि
Hari is to be worshipped everywhere; full worship should be performed for the liṅga; the stone liṅga is measured by the hand, and the wooden one likewise.
चलमङ्गुलमानेन द्वारगर्भकरैः स्थितम् । अङ्गुलाद् गृहलिङ्गं स्याद्यावत् पञ्चदशाङ्गुलम्
The movable liṅga is measured by a finger and is placed in the doorway or inner chamber; the household liṅga is from one finger up to fifteen fingers.
द्वारमानात् त्रिसङ्ख्याकं नवधा गर्भमानतः। नवधा गर्भमानेन लिङ्गन्धाम्नि च पूजयेत्
From the doorway measurement, threefold; from the inner chamber, ninefold; with the ninefold inner measurement, one should worship the liṅga in the abode.
एवं लिङ्गानि षट्त्रिंशत् ज्ञेयानि ज्येष्ठमानतः। मध्यमानेन षट्त्रिंशत् षट्त्रिशदधमेन च
Thus, thirty-six liṅgas are to be known by the highest measure; by the middle measure, thirty-six; and by the lowest, thirty-six as well.
इत्थमैक्येन लिङ्गानां शतमष्टोत्तरं भवेत्। एकाङ्गुलादिपञ्चान्तं कन्यसञ्चलमुच्यते
Thus, in total, there are one hundred and eight liṅgas; from one finger up to five, the smallest movable is said.
षडादिदशपर्यन्तञ्चलं लिङ्गञ्च मध्यमम्। एकादशाङ्गुलादि स्यात् ज्येष्ठं पञ्चदशान्तकम्
From six up to ten fingers is the medium movable liṅga; from eleven fingers up to fifteen is the highest.
षडङ्गुलं महारत्नै रत्नैरन्यैर्न्नवाङ्गुलम्। रविभिर्हेमभारोत्थं लिङ्गं शेषैस्त्रिपञ्चभिः
The great gem liṅga is six fingers, with other gems it is nine fingers; the liṅga made of gold from the rays of the sun is with the remaining three and five.
षोडशांशे च वेदांशे युगं लुप्त्वोर्ध्वदेशतः। द्वात्रिंशत्षोडशांशांश्च कोणयोस्तु विलोपयेत्
In the sixteenth part and in the Vedic portion, having omitted a yuga from the upper region, one should remove thirty-two sixteenth parts at the corners.
चतुर्निवेशनात् कण्ठो विंशतिस्त्रियुगैस्तथा। पार्श्वाभ्यां तु विलुप्ताभ्यां चललिङ्गं भवेद्वरम्
From four placements, the neck measures twenty by three yugas; and with the two sides omitted, the moving liṅga is considered best.
धाम्नो युगर्त्तुनागांशैर्द्वारं हीनादितः क्रमात्। लिङ्गद्वारोच्छयादर्वाग् भवेत् पादोनतः क्रमात्
By the measures of yuga, ṛtu, and nāga of the abode, the door is successively reduced from the base; and with the height of the liṅga and the door, the lower part is made less by a foot, in order.
गर्भार्द्धेनाधम लिङ्गं भूतांशैः स्यात् त्रिभिर्वरम्। तयोर्मध्ये च सूत्राणि सप्त सम्पातयेत् समम्
The inferior liṅga is half the size of the garbha, and the best is three times the measure of the elements; between these two, seven threads should be placed equally.
एवं स्युर्नव सूत्राणि भूतसूत्रैश्च मध्यमम्। द्व्यन्तरो वामवामश्च लिङ्गनां दीर्घता नव
Thus there are nine threads, and with the threads of the elements, the middle one; with two intervals, left and leftmost, the length of the liṅga is nine.
हस्ताद्विवर्द्धते हस्तो यावत्स्युर्न्नव पाणयः। हीनमध्योत्तमं लिङ्गं त्रिविधं त्रिविधात्मकम्
From the hand, the hand increases as far as there are nine palms; the liṅga is of three kinds—inferior, middle, and superior—each with threefold nature.
