In the sacred instructions of the Agni Purāṇa, the process of installing divine energies upon the body is laid out in detail, guiding the devotee through each step with reverence and precision. The ritual begins with the mindful placement of mantras upon the various parts of the body: the heart, head, crest, armor, missile, eyes, belly, back, arms, thighs, knees, shanks, and feet—all are to be consecrated in a specific sequence. For each part, sacred syllables and mantras are assigned. The sounds "Kaṃ, ṭaṃ, paṃ, śaṃ" are offered to Vainateya; "khaṃ, ṭhaṃ, phaṃ, ṣaṃ" to Gadāmanu; "gaṃ, ḍaṃ, baṃ, saṃ" invoke the mantra of strength; and "ghaṃ, ḍhaṃ, bhaṃ, haṃ" are salutations to Śrī. Further, "vaṃ, śaṃ, maṃ, kṣaṃ" are dedicated to Pāñcajanya; "chaṃ, taṃ, paṃ" to Kaustubha; "jaṃ, khaṃ, vaṃ" to Sudarśana; and "saṃ, vaṃ, daṃ, caṃ, laṃ" to Śrīvatsa. The syllables "Oṃ, dhaṃ, vaṃ" are for Vanamālā, and salutations are offered to Mahānanta. When mantras lack seed-syllables, the limbs are sanctified using appropriate words. Names, when joined to their respective classes, are used to form the fivefold arrangement of heart and other parts. When combined with the praṇava (Oṃ), these too are established in fivefold form. Here, Oṃ is the heart, Parā is the head and crest, the devotee's own name forms the armor, and the missile is signified by the name at the end. The sequence continues: Oṃ, Parā, missile, and one's own name—ending in the fourth case and with "Namaḥ"—are recited, encompassing the single up to the tenfold vyūha, thus establishing one's own mantra. Worship is performed on the little finger and fingertips, honoring the nature of the body. Parā is recognized as the very soul of Puruṣa, inherently twofold in nature. The devotee meditates on Oṃ, invoking the supreme, Agni as the self, and also Vāyu and the Sun, who are of dual aspect. Agni, who is threefold and all-pervading, is placed upon the hand and body. Vāyu and the Sun are installed on the branches of the hands, both right and left. The divine form is established in the heart and body, arranged in triplicity and a fourth form. The Vedas themselves are invoked: the Ṛgveda, all-pervading, is placed on the hand; the Yajurveda on the fingers; the form of Atharva on both palms, as well as at the head, heart, and feet. The all-pervading ether is placed on the hand and body, as before, while Vāyu and others are placed on the fingers, and at the head, heart, secret part, and feet. The elements are arranged as a fivefold array: Vāyu, fire, water, earth, and ether. The sixfold array consists of mind, ear, skin, eye, tongue, and nose. The mind, all-pervading, is placed from the thumb onward, and at the head, mouth, heart, secret part, and feet, the compassionate one is invoked. The primal, all-pervading form is known as the living being, manifesting as the sevenfold divisions: Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Svaḥ, Mahar, Jana, Tapas, and Satya. These are placed on the hand and body, from the thumb onward, with the seventh at the base of the palm, representing the lord of the worlds within the body. Sacrificial rites are also installed within the body: Agniṣṭoma, Uktha, Ṣoḍaśī, and Vājapeya are placed at the head, forehead, mouth, heart, secret part, and feet. Atirātra and Aptoryāma, the essence of sacrifice, form the sevenfold array. The steadfast self, mind, sound, touch, form, taste, scent, and intellect—all-pervading—are placed in order on the hand and body, with the last two on the palms, forehead, mouth, and heart. At the navel, secret part, and feet, the eightfold array is remembered as the person: life, intellect, ego, mind, sound, quality, and air. Form and taste complete the ninefold self; life is placed in both thumbs, with the remainder assigned from the index finger up to the left ring finger. The tenfold self, Indra, is established at the head, forehead, mouth, heart, navel, secret part, knees, and feet, pervading all. Fire is placed in both thumbs; the index finger and others are consecrated in order, as are the head, forehead, mouth, heart, navel, secret part, and knees. In both feet, the elevenfold self is installed: mind, ear, skin, eye, tongue, nose, speech, hands, feet, and the organ of excretion. The generative organ and mind are all-pervading, the ear is in both thumbs, and from the index finger onward, eight principles are placed, with the remainder in both palms. The body is further sanctified: at the uppermost limb, forehead, mouth, heart, navel, secret part, thighs, shanks, ankles, and feet, the forms of Viṣṇu—Madhusūdana, Trivikrama, Vāmana, Śrīdhara, Hṛṣīkeśa, Padmanābha—are installed. Damodara, Keśava, Nārāyaṇa the Supreme, Madhava, and Govinda are invoked, thus establishing the all-pervading Viṣṇu. These divine forms are installed on the thumbs, palms, feet, knees, hips, head, crown, waist, knees, and feet, according to the prescribed sequence. The twelvefold self, the twenty-fifth, and the arrangement of the twenty-sixth are thus placed: the person, the steadfast, the sense of 'I', the mind, the intellect, and the principle of sound; likewise, touch, taste, form, smell; ear, skin, eye, tongue, nose, speech, hands, feet, and the organs of excretion; the organ of generation, earth, water, fire, air, and space. Having installed the all-pervading Person, the devotee places the ten principles beginning with the thumb, with the rest on the palms, head, forehead, mouth, heart, navel, groin, thighs, shanks, feet, and the two messengers of the senses. The feet, knees, thighs, heart, and head are sanctified in order, culminating in the Supreme, beginning with the Self of the Person, and the twenty-sixth, the highest. The wise, having meditated on the single circle, worship Prakriti. In the four directions—east, south, west, and north—the heart and other parts are worshipped. The missile (astra) is placed in the southeast and other corners, Garuda and the others are invoked as before, and the guardians of the directions are honored, with the triple array of fire in the center. The ritual is adorned with clarified butter and other offerings, in the abodes of the lords of the directions beginning with the east. In the pericarp and in the sky, the mental deity is established. The Universal Form is worshipped for the maintenance of all, and for the victory of the clarified butter sacrifice, united with all arrays and the five limbs. Garuda and others, with Indra and the rest, are invoked, granting all desires. Vishvaksena is worshipped by name, the seed established in the sky. At this point, Nārada speaks: "I shall describe the characteristics of the mudrās, their modes such as presence and so on. The first mudrā is Añjali, to be offered with the heart. With the thumbs raised, the left fist and the binding of the right thumb, the thumb of the left hand is said to be raised in this way." Thus, the sacred arrangement of mantras, deities, and mudrās upon the body is revealed, a map for the devotee to transform the body into a living temple of the Divine.
