From the union of Urjjā and the sage Vasiṣṭha, a lineage arose: King Gātrordhvabāhuka was born, along with Savana, Ālaghu, Śukra, Sutapā, and seven illustrious seers. Among their descendants were Pāvaka, Pavamāna, and Śuci; Svāhā gave birth to Agnija. The Agnisvāttas, Varhiṣads, Anagnis, and Sāgnis also came forth, each with their own significance. From the Pitṛs and Svadhā, and from Menā, the daughter of Vaidhāra, new beings were born. Hiṃsā, the wife of Adharma, gave birth to Tathā and Anṛta. These two, in turn, brought forth a daughter named Nikṛti, as well as Bhaya and Naraka. From them emerged Māyā and Vedanā, forming a pair. Māyā gave birth to Mṛtyu, the taker of all living beings, while Vedanā gave birth to Duḥkha, born from Raurava. From Mṛtyu came Disease, Old Age, Grief, Thirst, and Anger. When Brahmā wept, Rudra was born, named for his crying. The Grandfather addressed Bhava, Śarva, Īśāna, Paśupati, Bhīma, Ugra, and Mahādeva, each bearing a divine role. Due to Dakṣa’s anger, his wife Satī relinquished her body; she was reborn as the daughter of Himavat and again became Śambhu’s wife, restoring the sacred union. From the sages, beginning with Nārada, originated the rites of worship, which are preceded by bathing and other purifying acts. These rituals, practiced since the time of Svāyambhuva and others, grant both enjoyment and liberation, bestowed by Viṣṇu and the other deities. Nārada spoke: “I will now describe the general worship of Viṣṇu and others, together with all the mantras. One should worship Acyuta and his entire retinue, offering salutations with ‘namas.’ Honor is to be given to Dhātr, Vidhātr, Gaṅgā, Yamunā, and the treasures, as well as to the goddess of the doorway, the new site, Śakti, Kūrma, and Anantaka. Worship the Earth, Dharma, Knowledge, Dispassion, and Sovereignty; Adharma and others; and even the stalk, petals, filaments, and pericarp of the lotus. The Ṛgveda and other Vedas, the Kṛta and other ages, Sattva and the solar mandala, Vimalotkarṣiṇī, Knowledge, Action, and Yoga—all these are to be revered. Worship Prahvi, Satya, Īśāna, Anugraha, and Sanamūrti; Durgā, Girā, Aṅgaṇa, Kṣetra, Vāsudeva, and others. The heart, head, trident, armor, eyes, and weapons; the conch, discus, mace, lotus, Śrīvatsa, and Kaustubha—each should be honored. One should worship the forest garland, Śrī, Puṣṭi, Garuḍa, and the guru; Indra, Agni, Yama, the Rākṣasas, water, Vāyu, and the lord of wealth. Through worship and related rites, success is attained in the mandala for the Lord without end, the unborn, his weapons, his vehicle, the lotus, and Viṣvaksena. In the general worship of Śiva, one should first honor Nandin, then Mahākāla, Gaṅgā, Yamunā, and the groups of attendants. Speech, fortune, the teacher, the dwelling, Śakti and others, Dharma and the rest; also Vāmā, Jyeṣṭhā, Raudrī, Kālī, and Kalavikāriṇī are to be worshipped. Balavikariṇī and then Balapramathinī, Sarvabhūtadamanī, Madanonmādinī, and the seat of Śiva are to be honored. With the syllables hāṃ, huṃ, hāṃ, one worships Śiva in his form with limbs and faces; hauṃ for Śiva, hām and so on, and hām for Īśāna and the other faces. With hrīṃ for Gaurī, gaṃ for Gaṇa, and for Indra and others, Caṇḍī, Hṛdā and so on; in order, the mantras for worshipping the Sun, Daṇḍin, and Piṅgala are to be honored. Uccaiḥśravā, Āruṇa, Prabhūta, and Vimala are to be worshipped; in the middle, Skanda and the others, who are the essence and the highest happiness, are to be honored. Dīptā, Sūkṣmā, Jayā, Bhadrā, Vibhūti, Vimala, Amoghā, Vidyutā, and Sarvatomukhī are also to be worshipped. The seat of the Sun is haṃ, khaṃ, kha, so, ulkā and the forms; with hrāṃ, hrīṃ, sa, ‘Obeisance to Sūrya,’ āṃ, and ‘Obeisance to Hṛdaya.’ For the Sun, Śikha, and likewise Agni, Īśa, Asura, and Vāyu; with bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ, svaḥ, for the flaming one, Śikhā, huṃ is known as the armor. The eye is māṃ, the dwelling arkkāstra, the queen is Śakti, Niṣkubhā; Soma, Aṅgāraka, Budha, Jīva, Śukra, and Śani in order. Rāhu, Ketu, Tejas, Caṇḍa; in brief, the worship is as follows: the seat for the form, the root, Hṛdā and so on, and the attendants. The seat of Viṣṇu, the form of Viṣṇu, roṃ, śrīṃ, śrīṃ, Śrīdhara, Hari; hrīṃ, the mantra for all forms—thus he enchants the three worlds. Hrīṃ for Hṛṣīkeśa, klīṃ for Viṣṇu, with long vowels for Hṛdā and so on; with all, the fifth case, the worship, and in battle, Jayā and the rest. The discus, the mace, in order the conch, the pestle, the sword, the bow Śārṅga; the noose, the goad, Śrīvatsa, Kaustubha, and the garland of the forest. Likewise, gaṃ for Gaṇapati, hrīṃ for Gaurī, śrīṃ for Śrī; hrīṃ for Tvaritā, hrīṃ, sau for Tripurā, ending with the fourth case and om. The syllable at the beginning of the name, joined with a dot, or with Om, is considered as recited when worshipping with all mantras. Whoever recites the worship mantras during offerings with sesame, ghee, and the like, attains righteousness, desire, wealth, and liberation; having enjoyed pleasures, he goes to heaven. Nārada continued: “I will explain the bathing rite for ritual acts. One should take earth with the Nṛsiṃha mantra, divide it in two, and with one part, cleanse the mind. After immersing and sipping water, placing it down, and being protected by the Siṃha mantra, one should then perform the prescribed bath, preceded by breath control. Meditating in the heart on the knowledge of Hari with the eight-syllable mantra, one should, with earth in the hand, recite the Siṃha mantra three times for protection in all directions. With the Vāsudeva mantra, one should consecrate the water, then cleanse the body with Vedic and other mantras, worshipping the form.” Thus, the sacred origins, the rituals of worship, and the procedures for purification are revealed, guiding the devotee toward fulfillment, righteousness, and liberation.
