Among the many sacred rites and offerings described, all are to be regarded as powerful destroyers of sin and bringers of deep satisfaction. These holy items and rituals are never to be sold; but should such a transaction occur, the mantra 'Ghṛtavatīti' must be recited to purify the act. There are mantras of great potency for every difficulty. The recitation of 'Ayāno Deva Savitar' dispels the ill effects of bad dreams, and by offering ghee with the mantra 'Abodhyagnir' as prescribed, one invokes blessings, O Rāma. After sprinkling the remaining ghee, it is ordained that a girdle be tied—especially for women whose pregnancies are at risk, O best of the Bhṛgus. For a newborn child, a jewel should be tied immediately after birth; by this act, the king Soma is freed from all diseases. The Sarpasāman protects one from snake-bite, and by offering with the mantra 'Mādya tvā vādyate', the officiating priest receives great rewards—thousands in return. By tying the Satāvarī jewel, one is shielded from fear of weapons, and the offering with 'Dīrghatasasorka' ensures abundant food. Reciting 'Svamadhyāyanti' protects from death by thirst, while 'Tvamimā oṣadhī' is a safeguard against disease. The mantra 'Pathi Devavrata' frees one from all fears, and offerings with 'Yadindro Munaye' increase good fortune. For the health of the eyes, 'Bhago na citra hatyevaṃ' is beneficial, and 'Saubhāgyavardhana' is known to enhance one's good fortune without further question. Reciting 'Indreti' along with its group of mantras brings even greater prosperity. The mantras 'Pari priyā hi vaḥ kāriḥ'—when heard by a woman—instill in her a desire for the one who recites them, O Rāma; this is certain. The Rathantara and Vamadeva chants are renowned for increasing the brilliance and spiritual radiance of Brahman. For a young boy, daily administration of speech-powder mixed with ghee, accompanied by the Indramid Gathin chant, ensures that he will become one who remembers all he hears. By offering the Rathantara and reciting it, the blessing of a son is surely obtained. The mantra 'Mayi Shri' should be recited to increase prosperity. Those who regularly perform the eightfold rite for deformity are granted prosperity; performing the seven- or eightfold rite fulfills all desires. Whoever, with discipline, recites 'Gavyeṣuṇeti' daily at dawn and dusk and tends to the cows, will always have cows in his house. As long as there remains a drona of clarified butter, let the wind bring the healing medicine; properly offering this dispels all illusion. When a servant offers sesame seeds with the formula 'Abhi tvā pūrvapītaye' and the vaṣaṭ sound, Pradeva severs the bonds of karma. In battle, the offering of a thousand bundles of fuel secures victory. The wise should craft auspicious figures of elephants, horses, and men from flour. These figures are then well-cooked, cut into portions with a razor, and anointed with mustard oil before being offered with focused intent. The knower of mantras should recite these sacred words over the warrior, and, having performed this act, victory in battle is assured. The Garuda, Vamadeva, Rathantara, and Brihadratha chants are to be employed for this purpose. At this point, Pushkara speaks: “The procedures for the Samans have been described; now I will explain the Atharvan rites. By offering the Shantatiya group of mantras, one attains peace. The medicinal group removes all diseases, while the Trisaptiya group frees one from all sins. Sometimes, by offering the Abhayanga group, fear is banished, and, O Rāma, those who offer these are never defeated. The Ayushya group removes the threat of untimely death, and the Svastyana group brings well-being everywhere. Through these rites, one unites with excellence and finds protection in the group of spiritual armor. The Vāstoṣpatya group removes faults in the dwelling, and the Raudra group likewise eliminates all faults. With these tenfold rites, the homa is performed in the context of the eighteen Shantis. These Shantis are the Vaishnavi, Aindri, Brahmi, Raudri, Vayavi, Varuni, Kauveri, Bhargavi, prājāpatya, tvāṣṭrī, kaumārī, agni-deity, hosts of the Maruts, gāndhārī, śānti, nairṛtakī, āṅgirasī, yāmyā, pārthivī, and the fulfiller of all desires. Whoever recites the mantra 'You are death' destroys death itself. By offering oblation with the mantra 'suparṇam,' one is freed from the torment of serpents; this mantra, a gift from Indra, grants the fulfillment of all desires and destroys every affliction. The mantra 'these are the goddesses' brings supreme peace, while 'the gods, the Maruts' ensures the fulfillment of all desires. The phrase 'from the world of Yama' is especially effective for dispelling bad dreams. The mantra 'Indra and the five merchants' is supremely effective for acquiring merchandise, and 'May I have desire and strength,' when offered, increases the good fortune of women. The offering 'To you alone, O eater of offerings, may the oblation always be made' brings increased intellect, and 'O Agni, knower of cows,' promotes the growth of wisdom. The mantra 'Steadfast, with the steadfast,' when offered, brings attainment of position, while 'May I live as red as lac,' in the presence of a dog, brings success in agriculture. 'I have broken you' enhances good fortune, and 'These are my bonds' frees one from captivity. Reciting 'I have struck down the oath-breaker' in oblation destroys enemies, and 'You are the highest' increases both fame and intelligence. 'As the deer goes' improves the good fortune of women, and 'By which here and this' brings about the blessing of children. The mantra 'May Bṛhaspati protect us' brings safety on the path, and 'I release you,' as stated, averts untimely death. Thus, through the faithful observance of these rites and the recitation of these mantras, one secures health, prosperity, protection, and all auspiciousness in life.
