O Bhārgava, hear now of the wondrous power of the sacred Rudra homa and the mantras, which bestow blessings upon all beings—goats, horses, elephants, cows, men, kings, children, and even women. These rites are not only for individuals, but for villages, cities, and entire regions as well. For those stricken with affliction or disease, and especially when death draws near, or in the face of enemies and fear, the Rudra homa performed with milk-rice or ghee brings supreme peace. When ghee and gourds are offered into the fire, all sins are washed away. The best among men should then partake of barley gruel or food obtained by begging at night. By bathing outside for a month, one is freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin, and by reciting the mantra 'madhuvāta' during homa, all desires are fulfilled. If one offers oblations with the mantra 'dadhikrāvaṇ', sons are surely obtained; with 'ghṛtavatī' and ghee, longevity is secured. The mantra 'svasti na indra' dispels all afflictions, while 'may cows multiply here' brings prosperity. A thousand oblations of ghee destroy misfortune, and by offering apāmārga rice with the ladle, saying 'of the god', one is quickly freed from deformity and sorcery. Offering Rudra’s mantra with palāśa wood yields gold. At the first appearance of fire, rice should be offered with the mantra 'śivo bhava'; and with 'yāḥ senāḥ', fear of thieves is driven away. If anyone is hostile, offering black sesame into the fire frees one a thousand times from sorcery and deformity. By offering food with the mantra 'annena annam', food is obtained; while reciting 'haṃsaḥ śuciḥ sadā' removes sin in water. The mantra 'catvāri śṛṅgāḥ' cleanses all sins committed in water, and 'devā yajña' ensures honor in the world of Brahma. By offering ghee with the mantra 'vasanteti', one receives a boon from the sun, and 'suparṇosi' acts as a vyāhṛti for karma. Reciting 'namaḥ svāhā' three times grants release from bondage, and by turning thrice in water, all sins are washed away. The mantra 'may cows multiply here' increases intelligence, and the oblation should be of clarified butter, curds, milk, or milk-rice. With the mantra 'śataṃ ya' and offerings of leaves and fruits, health, prosperity, and long life are attained. During shaving or salting, recite 'oṣadhīḥ pratimodadhvaṃ' to gain wealth; 'tasmā' releases the bound; and 'yuvā suvāsā' brings excellent garments. By offering sesame and ghee, all destructive curses are lifted and the destruction of enemies is achieved. To honor all serpents, offer ghee and milk-rice and perform the 'pāja' rite—this destroys malevolent magic. By offering a thousand blades of dūrvā grass, reciting 'from stalk to stalk', one pacifies epidemics in a village or country. The diseased are freed from illness, the sorrowful from suffering, especially when using fuel from the sweet-fruited udumbara tree. With a thousand offerings, O Rāma, one gains wealth, great fortune, and victory in disputes. By offering with the mantra 'apāṃ garbham', rain is brought forth; offering curd, ghee, and honey with 'apaḥ pibe' achieves the same. The knower of dharma can bring about great rain immediately, and the mantra 'namaste rudra' removes all calamities. These acts bring peace and destroy great sins; 'adhyavocad' protects the sick. In battle, these mantras instill fear in enemies, and 'māno mahānta' brings peace to children. He who daily recites 'asau yastāmra' to the Sun with diligence, morning and evening, attains inexhaustible food and a long life. The mantra 'pramuñca dhanvan' is the sixfold weapon-mantra, bringing fear to foes and peace to children. With the sevenfold recitation of 'namo hiraṇyabāhave', one should offer mustard seeds smeared with pungent oil to destroy enemies. By reciting 'namo vaḥ kirikebhyaḥ' and making a hundred thousand offerings—especially with bilva fruits and gold—a man attains royal fortune. Offering sesame with 'imā rudrāya' brings wealth; dūrvā grass with another mantra frees one from all diseases. The mantra 'āśuḥ śiśāna' protects weapons and destroys enemies in battle. The learned should offer a thousand and five oblations of clarified butter with 'rājasāmeti' to be freed from eye diseases. The homa performed at home, O Lord of plants, brings peace and removes faults of the dwelling; by offering ghee to Agni, one incurs no enmity. By offering puffed rice with 'apāṃ pheneti', victory is gained; 'bhadrā iti' restores all senses to one who lacks them. The mantras 'Agni' and 'Earth' are supreme for subjugation, and 'adhvaneti' brings victory in legal disputes. 'Brahma' and 'Rājanya' mantras bring success at the start of rituals; offering a hundred thousand oblations with oil for a year frees one from disease. The mantra 'Ketuṃ kṛṇvan' increases victory in battle, while 'Indra', 'Agni', and 'Dharma' secure righteousness in war. Thus, O Bhārgava, the power of these sacred rites and mantras brings protection, prosperity, and peace to all who perform them with faith and devotion.
