O Rāma, listen closely to the wondrous powers of the sacred rites and mantras as revealed in the ancient lore. When the Triyambakaṃ mantra is offered in ritual, it brings about an increase in good fortune. If one utters the names of maidens, one gains the favor of maidens; and in times of fear, constant recitation of these names brings freedom from danger. By offering dhattūra flowers mixed with ghee, all desires are fulfilled; and by offering guggulu in the fire, one is granted a vision of Śaṅkara in a dream. The recitation of the 'yuñcate mano' Anuvāka bestows long life, while the 'viṣṇorarāṭam' mantra destroys every affliction. This mantra shields the devotee, brings fame, and grants victory. In times of battle, the 'ayanno agnir' mantra ensures triumph. As one bathes, invoking the waters with prayer, the waters carry away all sins. In a special rite, an iron needle ten fingers in length is used as an offering to Viśvakarman. This needle is buried at the maiden’s door to ensure she is not given to another, and by such an offering to god Savitṛ, food is obtained. For those desiring strength, an offering into the fire with 'svāhā' using sesame seeds, barley, and apāmārga rice is prescribed. A pigment empowered a thousand times, combined with cow’s gallstone, may be used to mark oneself before seeking the goodwill of others. The Rudra mantras, when recited, destroy all sins. Performing homa with these mantras accomplishes every action and brings peace everywhere—to goats, horses, elephants, cows, humans, kings, children, and women alike. This peace extends to villages, cities, and entire regions, bringing relief to the afflicted and diseased. Even when death approaches, or when enemies or fear arise, the Rudra homa performed with milk-rice or ghee grants the highest peace. By offering ghee with gourds in the fire, all sins are washed away. The best of men should then eat barley gruel or food obtained by begging at night. Bathing outside for a month frees one from the sin of killing a Brahmin, and by performing homa with the 'madhuvāta' mantra, all desired fruits are obtained. Oblations with the 'dadhikrāvaṇ' mantra ensure the birth of sons, and with 'ghṛtavatī', longevity is gained through offerings of ghee. The 'svasti na indra' mantra destroys all afflictions, while the invocation 'may cows multiply here' increases prosperity. A thousand oblations of ghee dispel misfortune, and offering apāmārga rice with the ladle while invoking the gods quickly frees one from deformity and sorcery. Offering Rudra’s mantra with palāśa wood brings gold. At the first appearance of fire, rice should be offered with the 'śivo bhava' mantra, and the 'yāḥ senāḥ' mantra dispels fear of thieves. If one faces hostility, offering black sesame in the fire frees one a thousand times over from sorcery and deformity. Offering food with the 'annena annam' mantra brings abundance, and reciting 'haṃsaḥ śuciḥ sadā' purifies water of all sin. The 'catvāri śṛṅgāḥ' mantra removes all sins in water, and 'devā yajña' brings honor in Brahma’s world. Offering ghee with the 'vasanteti' mantra brings a boon from the sun, and 'suparṇosi' serves as a sacred utterance for karma. By reciting 'namaḥ svāhā' three times, one is released from bondage; turning three times in water frees one from all sin. The 'may cows multiply here' mantra increases intelligence, and oblations should be made with clarified butter, curds, milk, or milk-rice. Offering with the 'śataṃ ya' mantra, along with leaves and fruits, brings health, prosperity, and longevity. During shaving or when salting food, the 'oṣadhīḥ pratimodadhvaṃ' mantra grants wealth; 'tasmā' releases the bound, and 'yuvā suvāsā' brings excellent garments. To remove all destructive curses, one should offer sesame and ghee, ensuring the destruction of enemies. Homage to all serpents is paid by offering ghee and milk-rice in the 'pāja' rite, which destroys malevolent magic. Offering a thousand blades of dūrvā grass while reciting 'from stalk to stalk' pacifies epidemics in a village or country. The diseased are freed from illness, the sorrowful from suffering, and the proper fuel for these rites is the sweet-fruited udumbara tree. By making a thousand offerings, wealth, great fortune, and victory in disputes are attained. To bring rain, one should offer with the 'apāṃ garbham' mantra, or with curd, ghee, and honey while reciting 'apaḥ pibe'. The wise knower of dharma can bring rain immediately with these rites, and the 'namaste rudra' mantra removes all calamity. These practices are declared to bring all peace and destroy the gravest of sins. The 'adhyavocad' mantra protects the sick, and in battle, it brings fear to enemies. The 'māno mahānta' mantra brings peace to children. He who recites daily the 'asau yastāmra' mantra to the Sun, approaching with devotion each morning and evening, is blessed with inexhaustible food and long life. The 'pramuñca dhanvan' mantra is the sixfold weapon, instilling fear in enemies in battle, while the 'māno mahānta' mantra, once more, brings peace and well-being to children. Thus, O Rāma, are the manifold powers of mantra and rite revealed for the welfare of all beings.
