O Bhārgava, hear now of the manifold ways by which one may fulfill desires and overcome obstacles through sacred offerings and mantras. If a man seeks the hand of a maiden, let him offer jasmine flowers in pairs, each anointed with ghee; if prosperity is desired for a village, sesame and rice grains should be sacrificed in the fire. For the purpose of subjugation, the woods of śākhoṭa and apāmārga are to be used, and if the destruction of disease is sought, kindling mixed with poison and blood is offered. Should anger arise and one seek the destruction of enemies, an effigy of the king, fashioned entirely from various kinds of rice, is to be offered with proper rites. This offering should be performed a thousand times; then, indeed, the king will come under one's control. For those who desire fine garments, flowers and dūrvā grass—known to dispel disease—are to be offered. If one wishes to attain the radiance of Brahman, a garment is prescribed as an offering. In the rites dedicated to Pratyangiras, the ashes of the tuṣakaṇṭaka plant are to be used. For the removal of enmity, offer the eyelashes of the crow and the kauśika bird, and, during a lunar eclipse, pour forth kapila ghee. To gain intelligence, bring the root of vacā at the time it falls and consume it after reciting a thousand mantras. To expel enemies, bury an iron stake of eleven fingers’ length, or one of khadira wood, in the enemy’s house while chanting the mantra for the destruction of foes. This act, as taught, is known as the expulsion of enemies. If someone has lost their sight, reciting the mantra 'cakṣuṣpā' restores vision. To become free from disease, recite the phrase 'upayuñjata' from the Anuvāka and 'tanūpāgne sad' while offering dūrvā grass. Offerings made with the Triyambakaṃ mantra increase good fortune. By reciting the names of maidens, one may obtain a maiden; in times of fear, constant recitation brings freedom from danger. If all desires are to be fulfilled, offer dhattūra flowers with ghee. To see Śaṅkara in a dream, offer guggulu in the sacred fire. Reciting the 'yuñcate mano' Anuvāka grants long life, while the 'viṣṇorarāṭam' mantra destroys all afflictions, bringing protection, fame, and victory. The mantra 'ayanno agnir' bestows triumph in battle. During bathing, invoke the waters to carry away all sins, and as an offering to Viśvakarman, bury a ten-finger-long iron needle. If the maiden is not to be given to another, the needle is buried at her door. With such an offering to Savitṛ, one obtains food. For strength, offer sesame, barley, and apāmārga rice into the fire with 'svāhā.' Prepare a pigment empowered a thousand times, mixed with cow's gallstone; mark yourself with it to win the favor of people. Recitation of the Rudra mantras, which destroy all sins, and the performance of homa, bring about all desired results and peace everywhere—for goats, horses, elephants, cows, humans, kings, children, and women alike. The same applies to villages, cities, and regions, and for those afflicted by disease. When death approaches, or when enemies or fear are near, the Rudra homa performed with milk-rice or ghee grants supreme peace. By offering ghee with gourds, all sins are removed. The best of men should eat barley gruel or food begged at night. Bathing outside for a month frees one from the sin of killing a Brahmin. By the mantra 'madhuvāta', all is attained through homa. Offering with the mantra 'dadhikrāvaṇ' grants sons; with 'ghṛtavatī', longevity is bestowed through ghee. The mantra 'svasti na indra' destroys all afflictions, while 'may cows multiply here' increases prosperity. A thousand oblations of ghee remove misfortune. Offering apāmārga rice with the ladle, saying 'of the god', frees one from deformity and sorcery. With Rudra’s mantra and palāśa wood, gold is obtained. At the appearance of fire, offer rice with the mantra 'śivo bhava'; with 'yāḥ senāḥ', fear of thieves is dispelled. If anyone is hostile, offer black sesame in the fire to be freed a thousandfold from sorcery and deformity. With the mantra 'annena annam', offering food grants more food; reciting 'haṃsaḥ śuciḥ sadā' destroys sin in water. The mantra 'catvāri śṛṅgāḥ' removes all water-borne sins, and 'devā yajña' brings honor in the world of Brahma. Offering ghee with 'vasanteti' attains a boon from the sun, while 'suparṇosi' acts as a karmic utterance. Reciting 'namaḥ svāhā' three times brings release from bondage; turning thrice in water removes all sin. 'May cows multiply here' increases intelligence; oblations should be made with clarified butter, curds, milk, or milk-rice. With the mantra 'śataṃ ya', leaves and fruits are offered for health, prosperity, and long life. During shaving or salting, the mantra 'oṣadhīḥ pratimodadhvaṃ' brings wealth; 'tasmā' releases the bound; 'yuvā suvāsā' grants excellent garments. To release all destructive curses, offer sesame and ghee, and thus destroy enemies. Offer ghee and milk-rice to all serpents, performing the 'pāja' rite, which destroys malevolent magic. Thus, by these sacred acts, mantras, and offerings, all desires are fulfilled, obstacles removed, and peace and prosperity bestowed upon the devotee.
