To guide seekers on the path of purity, auspiciousness, and the destruction of all sins, the sages have prescribed the recitation of sixty-seven sacred hymns, beginning with the invocation ‘svādiṣṭaye’. Beyond these, the Pavamanī hymns—one hundred and six in total—hold the power to conquer even the dreadful fear of death when recited and accompanied by offerings into the sacred fire. For those troubled by the fear of sin, it is taught that reciting the ‘āpohiṣṭha’ hymn near water brings purification. If wealth is desired, one should regularly recite ‘pradevanneti’ at the Marudhanva. In moments when life is threatened, swift relief is found through these hymns. At night, silently reciting the single verse ‘prāveyābhi’ brings protection, and at sunrise, when the sun has just risen, success in contests is achieved by its utterance. If confusion clouds the mind, reciting ‘mā pragāma’ restores clarity and reveals the true path. When concern arises for a beloved friend whose lifespan seems diminished, one should gently touch the friend’s head while reciting the ‘yakteyam’ hymn from the Ratnātā collection. If this is done a thousand times over five days, great longevity is bestowed. To further enhance vitality, the wise offer ghee with the hymn ‘idaṃ medhyam’ a thousand times. Those who desire cattle should recite the appropriate hymns within the cow-pen; those seeking wealth, at the crossroads. Reciting ‘vayaḥ suparṇa’ brings prosperity. The hymn ‘iviṣyantīyam’ frees one from all sins, destroys diseases, and increases the bodily fire, the vital energy within. For those wishing for rain, the recitation of ‘vṛhaspate atīti’ is employed, invoking the herbs that grant well-being and dispel all ailments. Among the hymns, ‘sarvatreti’ is known as the supreme peace hymn, as is ‘pratiratha’. For those desiring offspring, the ‘saṃkāśyapan’ hymn is especially praised. If eloquence is sought, reciting ‘ahaṃ sdreti’ grants it, and the wise who recite ‘ratīti’ at night are freed from the cycle of rebirth. The Ratri Sukta, recited at night, ensures safety through the darkness, and when performed with the ritual for destroying enemies, it brings lasting security. The great Dakshayana hymn, a source of long life and brilliance, should be recited by those steadfast in their vows. For the destruction of disease, the ‘Uta Deva’ hymn is recommended. In times of fear from fire, one should recite ‘Ayaptagne Janit’, and in the forests, ‘Aranyani’ removes all fear. Approaching the Brahmi plant, one recites two hymns and the Brahmi Shatavari verse separately, offering ghee; thus, intelligence and prosperity are gained. For victory in battle, the ‘Mama’ hymn destroys rivals, while the ‘Brahmanogni Samvidana’ hymn prevents miscarriage and death in the womb. To dispel bad dreams and suffering, the ‘Apaihi’ hymn is recited, and ‘Yenedam’ brings supreme concentration. The hymn ‘Mayo Bhur Vata’ is especially auspicious for cattle, and with the Shambhari hymn or Indrajala, one wards off illusion and magic. On journeys, reciting ‘Mahitrinam Avaras’ brings auspiciousness, and ‘Agnaye Bidvishan’ destroys enemies. Within the home, the Vastu-pati mantra is used to worship the household deities, following the prescribed method, especially when making offerings. At the conclusion of the homa, a gift should be given; this pacifies sin. The offering is completed with food, and by giving food and gold, the rite is fulfilled. The blessings of Brahmins are unfailing, and bathing in all sacred places is auspicious. Offerings of Siddharthaka seeds, barley, grains, milk, curd, and ghee are praised. Milk-bearing trees and fuel wood grant all desires, while nearby, thorny plants, mustard, blood, and poison are also used in certain rites. In counter-magic, stone, food, weapons, and paths are employed, along with curd, alms, fruit, and the prescribed method for animal sacrifice. At this point, Pushkara spoke, promising to explain the Yajurveda procedure, which grants both enjoyment and liberation. He emphasized the importance of the great Vyahritis, always preceded by Omkara, as essential for all rituals, for they destroy all sins and grant all desires. The wise, he said, should worship the gods with a thousand offerings of clarified butter. Whatever is sincerely desired in the mind, this ritual fulfills. For peace, barley is used; for the removal of sin, sesame seeds. With grains and Siddharthaka seeds, which fulfill all wishes, and udumbara wood as fuel, the ritual is performed for those desiring cattle. Curd is offered for those wishing for food, and the path is invoked for those seeking peace. Apamarga twigs as fuel are used by those wishing for gold. One desiring a maiden should offer, in pairs, jasmine flowers anointed with ghee. For prosperity of a village, sesame and rice grains are offered. For subjugation, the wood of śākhoṭa and apāmārga is used. To destroy disease, kindling mixed with poison and blood is offered. If anger and the destruction of enemies are sought, an effigy of the king, made entirely of various types of rice, is properly offered a thousand times, bringing the king under one’s control. For garments, flowers and dūrvā grass are offered, which also destroy disease. For Brahmic radiance, a garment is prescribed, and in the rites of Pratyangiras, the ashes of tuṣakaṇṭaka are offered. For enmity, the eyelashes of the crow and the kauśika bird are used, along with kapila ghee, especially during a lunar eclipse. By bringing the vacā root at the time of its fall and consuming it after a thousand recitations, intelligence is gained. An iron stake, eleven fingers long, or one of khadira wood, may be buried in the enemy’s house while reciting the mantra for the destruction of foes—this is known as the expulsion of enemies. By reciting ‘cakṣuṣpā,’ sight is restored to the blind. Applying the phrase ‘upayuñjata’ from the Anuvāka, and offering dūrvā grass with ‘tanūpāgne sad,’ one becomes free from disease. Thus, the sages have shown the manifold ways in which the sacred hymns and rituals, when performed with devotion and knowledge, bestow blessings, remove obstacles, and fulfill all desires upon the faithful.
