देवाश्च दानवाश्चैव दग्धाश्चैव विषेण ह। अपाक्रामंस्ततो भीता विषादमगमंस्तदा
The gods and Danavas, scorched by the poison, fled from there in fear and fell into despair.
ब्रह्माणमब्रुवन्देवाः समेत्य मुनिपुंगवैः। मथ्यमानेऽमृते जातं विषं कालानलप्रभम्
The gods, together with the foremost sages, approached Brahma and said: 'As we churned for ambrosia, a poison has arisen, blazing like the fire of destruction.'
तेनैव तापिता लोकास्तस्य प्रतिकुरुष्वह। एवमुक्तस्तदा ब्रह्मा दध्यौ लोकेश्वरं हरम्
'By this, the worlds are tormented; please counteract it.' Thus addressed, Brahma then meditated upon Hara, the lord of the worlds.
त्र्यक्षं त्रिशूलिनं रुद्रे देवदेवमुमापतिम्। तदाऽथ चिन्तितो देवस्तज्ज्ञात्वा द्रुतमाययौ
He thought of the three-eyed, trident-bearing Rudra, the god of gods, consort of Uma; knowing this, the god swiftly appeared.
तस्याथ देवस्तत्सर्वमाचचक्षे प्रजापतिः। तच्छ्रुत्वा दवेदेवेशो लोकस्यास्य हितेप्सया
Then the lord of creatures related everything to the god; hearing this, the lord of the gods, desiring the welfare of the world,
अपिबत्तद्विषं रुद्रः कालानलसमप्रभम्। कण्ठे स्थापितवान्देवो लोकानां हितकाम्यया
Rudra drank that poison, blazing like the fire of destruction, and held it in his throat, wishing for the good of all beings.
यस्मात्तु नीलता कण्ठे नीलकण्ठस्ततः स्मृतः। पीतमात्रे विषे तत्र रुद्रेणामिततेजसा
Because his throat became blue, he is remembered as 'the blue-throated one'; when Rudra of immeasurable energy drank the poison,
देवाः प्रीताः पुनर्जग्मुश्चक्रुर्वै कर्म तत्तथा। मथ्यमानेऽमृतस्यार्थे भूयो वै देवदानवैः
The gods, pleased, resumed their work and again the gods and Danavas churned for the sake of ambrosia.
वासुकेरथ नागस्य सहसा क्षिप्यतोऽसुरैः। सधूमाः सार्चिषो वाता निष्पेतुरसकृन्मुखात्
As the Asuras swiftly pulled Vasuki, the serpent, smoke and blazing flames issued repeatedly from his mouth.
ते धूमसङ्घाः संभूता मेघसङ्घाः सविद्युतः। अभ्यवर्षन्सुरगणाञ्श्रमसंतापकर्शितान्
Those masses of smoke became clouds filled with lightning, and they rained down upon the hosts of gods, who were exhausted and afflicted by toil.
तस्माच्च गिरिकूटाग्रात्प्रच्युताः पुष्पवृष्टयः। सुरासुरगणान्सर्वान्समन्तात्समवाकिरन्
From the summit of that mountain peak, showers of flowers fell, covering all the hosts of gods and asuras on every side.
बभूवात्र महान्नादो महामेघरवोपमः। उदधेर्मथ्यमानस्य मन्दरेण सुरासुरैः
There arose a great sound there, like the roar of a mighty cloud, as the ocean was churned by the gods and asuras with Mandara.
तत्र नानाजलचरा विनिष्पिष्टा महाद्रिणा। विलयं समुपाजग्मुः शतशो लवणाम्भसि
There, many aquatic creatures were crushed by the great mountain and perished by the hundreds in the salty water.
वारुणानि च भूतानि विविधानि महीधरः। पातालतलवासीनि विलयं समुपानयत्
The great mountain also brought destruction to various beings of Varuna, dwelling in the depths of the underworld.
तस्मिंश्च भ्राम्यमाणेऽद्रौ संघृष्यन्तः परस्परम्। न्यपतन्पतगोपेताः पर्वताग्रान्महाद्रुमाः
As that mountain was being whirled, great trees, clinging to the mountain peaks, collided with each other and fell down.
तेषां संघर्षजश्चाग्निरर्चिर्भिः प्रज्वलन्मुहुः। विद्युद्भिरिव नीलाभ्रमावृणोन्मन्दरं गिरिम्
From their collision, fire arose, blazing repeatedly with flames, covering Mount Mandara with tongues of fire like lightning covers a dark cloud.
ददाह कुञ्जरांस्तत्र सिंहांश्चैव विनिर्गतान्। विगतासूनि सर्वाणि सत्त्वानि विविधानि च
That fire burned the elephants there, and also the lions that had emerged, and all the various beings whose life had departed.
तमग्निममरश्रेष्ठः प्रदहन्तमितस्ततः। वारिणा मेघजेनेन्द्रः शमयामास सर्वशः
Then the best of the immortals, Indra, extinguished that fire, which was burning here and there, completely with water produced from clouds.
ततो नानाविधास्तत्र सुस्रुवुः सागराम्भसि। महाद्रुमाणां निर्यासा बहवश्चौषधीरसाः
Then, into the ocean, many different kinds of saps from the great trees and the juices of herbs flowed forth.
तेषाममृतवीर्याणां रसानां पयसैव च। अमरत्वं सुरा जग्मुः काञ्चनस्य च निःस्रवात्
From those juices, possessing the essence of immortality, and from the milk as well, the gods attained immortality, as also from the flow of gold.
ततस्तस्य समुद्रस्य तञ्जातमुदकं पयः। रसोत्तमैर्विमिश्रं च ततः क्षीरादभूद्धृतम्
Then, the water of that ocean, mixed with those excellent juices, became milk, and from that, clarified butter was produced.
ततो ब्रह्माणमासीनं देवा वरदमब्रुवन्। श्रान्ताः स्म सुभृशं ब्रह्मन्नोद्भवत्यमृतं च तत्
Then the gods, seated before Brahma, said: 'O Brahman, we are greatly exhausted, and yet the nectar has not arisen.'
ऋते नारायणं देवं सर्वेऽन्ये देवदानवाः। चिरारब्धमिदं चापि सागरस्यापि मन्थनम्
Without the god Narayana, neither the other gods nor the asuras, nor even this long-performed churning of the ocean, can succeed.
ग्लानिरस्मान्समाविष्टा न चात्रामृतमत्थितम्
Fatigue has overcome us, and the nectar has not appeared here.
ततो नारायणं देवं वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्। विधत्स्वैषां बलं विष्णो भवानत्र परायणम्
Then Brahma spoke these words to the god Narayana: 'Grant them strength, O Vishnu, for you are their refuge here.'
बलं ददामि सर्वेषां कर्मैतद्ये समास्थिताः। क्षोभ्यतां कलशः सर्वैमन्दरः परिवर्त्यताम्
'I give strength to all who are engaged in this task today. Let the churning stick be agitated, and let Mandara be turned once more.'
नारायणवचः श्रुत्वा बलिनस्ते महोदधेः। तत्पयः सहिता भूयश्चक्रिरे भृशमाकुलम्
Hearing Narayana's words, those powerful ones churned the ocean again with even greater effort, together with that milk.
तत्र पूर्वं विषं जातं तद्ब्रह्मवचनाच्छिवः। प्राग्रसल्लोकरक्षार्थं ततो ज्येष्ठा समुत्थिता। कृष्णरूपधरा देवी सर्वाभरणभूषिता
There, first, poison arose, and by Brahma's command, Shiva took it up for the protection of the worlds. Then Jyeshtha emerged, a dark-complexioned goddess adorned with all ornaments.
ततः शतसहस्रांशुर्मथ्यमानात्तु सागरात्। प्रसन्नात्मा समुत्पन्नः सोमः शीतांशुरुज्ज्वलः
Then, from the ocean being churned, the radiant Soma, the cool and shining moon, arose with a tranquil mind.
श्रीरनन्तरमुत्पन्ना घृतात्पाण्डुरवासिनी। सुरा देवी समुत्पन्ना तुरगः पाण्डुरस्तथा
Immediately after, Shri, dwelling in white, emerged from the clarified butter; the goddess Surā appeared, and likewise a white horse.
