अभीश्च मन्युमांश्चैव ततस्तमरिमर्दनम्। अभिमन्युरिति प्राहुरार्जुनिं पुरुषर्षभम्
Because of his fearlessness and wrath, they called that slayer of enemies, the son of Arjuna, by the name Abhimanyu.
स सात्वत्यामतिरथः संबभूव धनञ्जयात्। मखे निर्मथनेनेव शमीगर्भाद्धुताशनः
That great chariot-warrior was born to Dhanañjaya from Sātvati, just as the sacrificial fire is produced from the arani wood during a ritual.
यस्मिञ्जाते महातेजाः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। अयुतं गा द्विजातिभ्यः प्रादान्निष्कांश्च भारत
When the mighty Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, was born, he gave ten thousand cows to the twice-born, along with gold, O Bharata.
दयितो वासुदेवस्य बाल्यात्प्रभृति चाभवत्। पितॄणां चैव सर्वेषां प्रजानामिव चन्द्रमाः
From childhood, he became dear to Vasudeva, and to all his fathers, like the moon to all living beings.
जन्मप्रभृति कृष्णश्च चक्रे तस्य क्रियाः शुभाः। स चापि ववृधे बालः शुक्लपक्षे यथा शशी
From birth, Krishna performed auspicious rites for him; and the boy grew, like the waxing moon in the bright fortnight.
चतुष्पादं दशविधं धनुर्वेदमरिन्दमः। अर्जुनाद्वेद वेदज्ञः सकलं दिव्यमानुषम्
The subduer of foes, Arjuna, learned the fourfold and tenfold divisions of archery, mastering all celestial and human weapons from the knower of the Vedas.
विज्ञानेष्वपि चास्त्राणां सौष्ठवे च महाबलः। क्रियास्वपि च सर्वासु विशेषानभ्यशिक्षयत्
In the science of weapons, in skill, and in all practices, the mighty one received special instruction in every aspect.
आगमे च प्रयोगे च चक्रे तुल्यमिवात्मना। तुतोष पुत्रं सौभद्रं प्रेक्षमाणो धनञ्जयः
In theory and in application, he made himself equal; Dhananjaya was pleased, watching his son Saubhadra.
सर्वसंहननोपेतं सर्वलक्षणलक्षितम्। दुर्धर्षमृषभस्कन्धं व्यात्ताननमिवोरगम्
Endowed with all bodily proportions, marked by all auspicious signs, hard to overcome, with shoulders like a bull, and a face like an open-mouthed serpent.
सिंहदर्पं महेष्वासं मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमम्। मेघदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषं पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननम्
With the pride of a lion, a great archer, the stride of a maddened elephant, a voice like thunderclouds and drums, and a face shining like the full moon.
कृष्णस्य सदृशं शौर्ये वीर्ये रूपे तथाऽऽकृतौ। ददर्श पुत्रं बीभत्सुर्मघवानिव तं यथा
In courage, strength, appearance, and deeds, he was like Krishna; Bhībhatsu saw his son as Maghavan might see himself.
पाञ्चाल्यपि तु पञ्चभ्यः पतिभ्यः शुभलक्षणा। लेभे पञ्च सुतान्वीराञ्श्रेष्ठान्पञ्चाचलानिव
Panchali, possessed of auspicious marks, bore five heroic sons from her five husbands, like five great mountains.
युधिष्ठिरात्प्रतिविन्ध्यं सुतसोमं वृकोदरात्। अर्जुनाच्छ्रुतकर्माणं शतानीकं च नाकुलिम्
From Yudhishthira came Prativindhya, from Vrikodara Sutasoma, from Arjuna Shrutakarman, from Nakula Shatanika.
सहदेवाच्छ्रुतसेनमेतान्पञ्च महारथान्। पाञ्चाली सुषुवे वीरानादित्यानदितिर्यथा
From Sahadeva, Shrutasena; these five great chariot-warriors Panchali bore, like Aditi bore the Adityas.
शास्त्रतः प्रतिविन्ध्यन्तमूचुर्विप्रायुधिष्ठिरम्। परप्रहरणज्ञाने प्रतिविन्ध्यो भत्वयम्
According to the scriptures, the Brahmins told Yudhishthira: 'Prativindhya should be skilled in the knowledge of others' weapons.'
सुतेसोमसहस्रे तु सोमार्कसमतेजसम्। सुतसोमं महेष्वासं सुषुवे भीमसेनतः
In the thousandth part of Sutesoma, whose brilliance equaled the moon and sun, Bhimasena begot Sutasoma, the great archer.
श्रुतं कर्म महत्कृत्वा निवृत्तेन किरीटिना। जातः पुत्रस्तथेत्येवं श्रुतकर्मा ततोऽभवत्
Having performed great deeds, the crowned one withdrew; thus, his son was born and named Shrutakarman.
शतानीकस्य राजर्षेः कौरव्यस्य महात्मनः। चक्रे पुत्रं सनामानं नकुलः कीर्तिवर्धनम्
Nakula made Shatanika, the son of the royal sage Shatanika, the great-souled Kaurava, a bearer of fame.
ततस्त्वजीजनत्कृष्णा नक्षत्रे वह्निदैवते। सहदेवात्सुतं तस्माच्छ्रुतसेनेति तं विदुः
Then Krishna, under the constellation ruled by Agni, bore a son from Sahadeva, who was known as Shrutasena.
एकवर्षान्तरास्त्वेते द्रौपदेया यशस्विनः। अन्वजायन्त राजेन्द्र परस्परहितैषिणः
These illustrious sons of Draupadi were born at intervals of one year, O king, each seeking the welfare of the others.
जातकर्माण्यानुपूर्व्याच्चूडोपनयनानि च। चकार विधिवद्धौम्यस्तेषां भरतसत्तम
Then Dhaumya, in due order and according to the prescribed rites, performed the birth ceremonies, the tonsure, and the sacred thread investiture for them, O best of the Bharatas.
कृत्वा च वेदाध्ययनं ततः सुचरितव्रताः। जगृहुः सर्वमिष्वस्त्रमर्जुनाद्दिव्यमानुषम्
After completing their study of the Vedas, those of virtuous vows received from Arjuna all the divine and human weapons.
दिव्यगर्भोपमैः पुत्रैर्व्यूढोरस्कैर्महारथैः। अन्विता राजशार्दूल पाण्डवा मुदमाप्नुवन्
Endowed with sons whose chests were broad like those born of divine wombs, and who were great chariot-warriors, the Pandavas, O tiger among kings, attained joy.
इन्द्रप्रस्थे वसन्तस्ते जघ्रुरन्यान्नराधिपान्। शासनाद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य राज्ञः शान्तनवस्य च
Dwelling in Indraprastha, they received tribute from other kings, by the command of King Dhritarashtra and the son of Shantanu.
आश्रित्य धर्मराजानं सर्वलोकोऽवसत्सुखम्। पुण्यलक्षणकर्माणं स्वदेहमिव देहिनः
All people, taking refuge in King Yudhishthira—whose deeds were marked by virtue—lived happily, as embodied beings do in their own bodies.
स समं धर्मकामार्थान्सिषेवे भरतर्षभ। त्रीनिवात्मसमान्बन्धून्नीतिमानिव मानयन्
He, O bull among the Bharatas, honored his three brothers, who were like his own self, and wisely attended to righteousness, desire, and wealth together.
तेषां समविभक्तानां क्षितौ देहवतामिव। बभौ धर्मार्थकामानां चतुर्थ इव पार्थिवः
Among them, who shared equally on earth like embodied beings, the king shone forth as if he were the fourth among righteousness, wealth, and desire.
अध्येतारं परं वेदान्प्रयोक्तारं महाध्वरे। रक्षितारं शुभाँल्लोकाँल्लोभिरे तं जनाधिपम्
People longed for that ruler, who was the foremost student of the Vedas, the chief officiant at great sacrifices, and the protector of auspicious worlds.
अधिष्ठानवती लक्ष्मीः परायणवती मतिः। वर्धमानोऽखिलो धर्मस्तेनासीत्पृथिवीक्षिताम्
Prosperity, firmly established, and wisdom, steadfast in its goal, increased in every way through him; thus he watched over the earth.
भ्रातृभिः सहितौ राजा चतुर्भिरधिकं बभौ। प्रयुज्यमानैर्विततो वेदैरिव महाध्वरः
The king, together with his four brothers, shone even more, like a great sacrifice extended by the Vedas being recited in unison.
