शासनात्पुरुषेन्द्रस्य बलेन महता बली। गिरौ रैवतके नित्यं बभूव विपृथुश्रवाः
By the command of the best of men, and with great force, Vipṛthuśravā always remained on Mount Raivata.
प्रवासे वासुदेवस्य तस्मिन्हलधरोपमः। संबभूव तदा गोप्ता पुरस्य पुरवर्धनः
During Vāsudeva's absence, he, like the wielder of the plough, became the protector and enhancer of the city.
प्राप्य पाण्डवनिर्याणं निर्ययौ विपृथुश्रवाः। निशम्य पुरनिर्घोषं स्वमनीकमचोदयत्
Having learned of the departure of the Pāṇḍava, Vipṛthuśravā set out; hearing the city's tumult, he urged on his own troops.
सोऽभिपत्य तदाध्वानं ददर्श पुरुषर्षभम्। निःसृतं द्वारकाद्वारादंशुमन्तमिवाम्बिरात्
Advancing on that path, he saw the best of men, emerging from Dvārakā's gate, like the sun from the ocean.
सविद्युतमिवाम्भोदं प्रेक्षतां तं धनुर्धरम्। पार्थमानर्तयोधानां विस्मयः समपद्यत
Beholding that archer, like a rain-cloud with lightning, wonder arose among the warriors of the Anarta army.
उदीर्णरथनागाश्वमनीकमभिवीक्ष्य तत्। उवाच परमप्रीता सुभद्रा भद्रभाषिणी
Seeing that army with chariots, elephants, and horses in full array, Subhadrā, of auspicious speech, spoke with great delight.
संग्रहीतुमभिप्रायो दीर्घकालकृतो मम। युध्यमानस्य सङ्ग्रामे रथं तव नरर्षभ
My long-held desire is to gather the reins for you, O best of men, as you fight in battle, driving your chariot.
ओजस्तेजोद्युतिबलैरन्वितस्य महात्मनः। पार्थ ते सारथित्वेन भविता शिक्षितास्म्यहम्
Endowed with strength, energy, radiance, and might, O Pārtha, I have been trained to be your charioteer.
एवमुक्तः प्रियां प्रीतः प्रत्युवाच नरर्षभः। चोदयाश्वानसंसक्तान्विश्तु विपृथोर्बलम्
Thus addressed by his beloved, the best of men, pleased, replied: 'Urge on the untiring horses, let us enter Vipṛthu's forces.'
बहुभिर्युध्यमानस्य तावकान्विजिघांसतः। पश्य बाहुबलं भद्रे शरान्विक्षिपतो मम
See, O blessed one, as I fight many who seek to defeat your kin, the power of my arms as I release my arrows.
एवमुक्ता तदा भद्रा पार्थेन भरतर्षभ। चुचोद साश्वान्संहृष्टा ते ततो विविशुर्बलम्
Thus addressed by Pārtha, O bull among the Bharatas, Bhadrā joyfully urged on the horses, and they entered the army.
तदाहतमहावाद्यं समुदग्रध्वजायुतम्। अनीकं विपृथोर्हृष्टं पार्थमेवान्ववर्तत
Then the delighted division of Vipṛthu, with great banners and sounding mighty instruments, followed Pārtha.
रथैर्बहुविधाकारैः सदश्वैश्च महाजवैः। किरन्तः शरवर्षाणि परिवव्रुर्धनञ्जयम्
With chariots of many kinds, drawn by swift and noble steeds, they surrounded Dhananjaya, showering volleys of arrows.
तेषामस्त्राणि संवार्य दिव्यास्त्रेण महास्त्रवित्। आवृणोन्महदाकाशं शरैः परपुरञ्जयः
The conqueror of enemy cities, skilled in divine weapons, countered their missiles with a celestial weapon and filled the vast sky with his arrows.
तेषां बाणान्महाबाहुर्मुकुटान्यङ्गदानि च। चिच्छेद निशितैर्बाणैः शरांश्चैव धनूंषि च
The mighty-armed one cut down their arrows, crowns, and armlets, as well as their arrows and bows, with his sharp shafts.
युगानीषान्वरूथानि यन्त्राणि विविधानि च। अजिघांसन्परान्पार्थश्चिच्छेद निशितैः शरैः
Desiring to destroy his foes, Partha severed their yokes, axles, standards, and various machines with keen arrows.
विधनुष्कान्विकवचान्विरथांश्च महारथान्। कृत्वा पार्थः प्रियां प्रीतः प्रेक्ष्यतामित्यदर्शयत्
Having rendered the great chariot-warriors without bows, without armor, and without chariots, Partha, pleased, showed his beloved for all to see.
सा दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं सुभद्रा पार्थमब्रवीत्। अवाप्तार्थाऽस्मि भद्रं ते याहि पार्थ यथासुखम्
Seeing this great wonder, Subhadra said to Partha, 'I have attained my desire. Blessings to you—go as you please, Partha.'
स सक्तं पाण्डुपुत्रेण समीक्ष्य विपृथुर्बलम्। त्वरमाणोऽभिसंक्रम्य स्थीयतामित्यभाषत
Seeing his force held back by the son of Pandu, Viprithu hurried forward and said, 'Stand your ground!'
ततः सेनापतेर्वाक्यं नात्यवर्तन्त यादवाः। सागरे मारुतोद्धूता वेलामिव महोर्मयः
Then, at the command of their general, the Yadavas did not advance further, like great waves in the ocean held back by the shore, though driven by the wind.
ततो रथवरात्तूर्णमवरुह्य नरर्षभः। अभिगम्य नरव्याघ्रं प्रहृष्टः परिषस्वजे
Then, the best of men quickly descended from his excellent chariot, approached the tiger among men, and joyfully embraced him.
सोऽब्रवीत्पार्थमासाद्य दीर्घकालमिदं तव। निवासमभिजानामि शङ्खचक्रगदाधरात्
He said to Partha, 'Having come near you, I know well your long residence with the bearer of the conch, discus, and mace.'
न मेऽस्त्यविदितं किंचिद्यद्यदाचितं त्वया। सुभद्रार्थं प्रलोभेन प्रीतस्तव जनार्दनः
'Nothing you have done for Subhadra's sake is unknown to me; Janardana, pleased by your entreaty, aided you through persuasion.'
प्राप्तस्य यतिलिङ्गेन वासितस्य धनञ्जय। बन्धुमानसि रामेण महेन्द्रावरजेन च
'When you, Dhananjaya, stayed here in ascetic garb, you were befriended by Rama and the younger brother of Mahendra.'
मामेव च सदाकाङ्क्षी मन्त्रिणं मधुसूदनः। अन्तरेण सुभद्रां च त्वां च तात धनञ्जय
'Madhusudana always wished for me as his counselor, except in the matter of Subhadra and you, dear Dhananjaya.'
इमं रथवरं दिव्यं सर्वशस्त्रसमन्वितम्। इदमेवानुयात्रं च निर्दिश्य गदपूर्वजः
'This very divine chariot, equipped with all weapons, and this retinue, were assigned to you by the elder of the mace.'
अन्तर्द्वीपं तदा वीर गतो वृष्णिसुखावहः। दीर्घकालावरुद्धं त्वां संप्राप्तं प्रियया सह
'Then, the bringer of joy to the Vrishnis went to the inner island, and you, long held back, have now arrived with your beloved.'
पश्यन्तु भ्रातरः सर्वे वज्रपाणिमिवामराः। आयाते तु दशार्हाणामृषभे शार्ङ्गधन्वनि
'Let all the brothers behold you, like the gods seeing the wielder of the thunderbolt, as the bull among the Dasharhas, wielder of Sharnga, arrives.'
भद्रामनुगमिष्यन्ति रत्नानि च वसूनि च। अरिष्टं याहि पन्थानं सुखी भव धनञ्जय
'Good fortune and treasures will follow you; go by a safe path and be happy, Dhananjaya.'
नष्टशोकैर्विशोकस्य सुहृद्भिः संगमोऽस्तु ते
'May you, free from sorrow and with your grief dispelled, be united with your friends.'
