व्यत्ययित्वा तु तल्लिङ्गं यतिवेषं धनञ्जयः। आमुच्य कवचं वीरः समुच्छ्रितमहद्धनुः
Then Dhananjaya, changing his appearance and ascetic attire, the heroic one donned his armor and raised his great bow.
आरुरोह रथश्रेष्ठं शुक्लवासा धनञ्जयः। महेन्द्रदत्तं मुकुटं तथैवाभरणानि च
Dhananjaya, clad in white garments, mounted the excellent chariot, wearing the crown given by Mahendra and also the ornaments.
अलङ्कृत्य तु कौन्तेयः प्रयातुमुपचक्रमे। ततः कन्यापुरे घोषस्तुमुलः समपद्यत
Having adorned himself, the son of Kunti set out; then, in the city of maidens, a tumultuous sound arose.
दृष्ट्वा नववरं पार्थं बाणखड्गधनुर्धरम्। अभीशुहस्तां सुश्रोणीमर्जुनेन रथे स्थिताम्
Seeing Partha, the new bridegroom, armed with arrows, sword, and bow, and the beautiful-hipped one holding the reins, standing on the chariot with Arjuna,
ऊचुः कन्यास्तदा यान्तीं वासुदेवसहोदराम्। सर्वकामसमृद्धा त्वं सुभद्रे भद्रभाषिणि
The maidens then spoke to Subhadra, the sister of Vasudeva, as she departed: 'You are endowed with every desire, O Subhadra, speaker of auspicious words.'
वासुदेवप्रियं लब्ध्वा भर्तारं वीरमर्जुनम्। सर्वसीमन्तिनीनां त्वां श्रेष्ठां कृष्णसहोदरीम्
'Having obtained Arjuna, the heroic beloved of Vasudeva, as your husband, among all noble women you are the best, O sister of Krishna.'
मन्यामहे महाभागे सुभद्रे भद्रभाषिणि। यस्मात्सर्वमनुष्याणां श्रेष्ठो भर्ता तवार्जुनः
'We consider you most fortunate, O Subhadra, speaker of auspicious words, because Arjuna, the best of all men, is your husband.'
उपपन्नस्त्वया वीरः सर्वलोकमहारथः। हे प्रयाहि गृहान्भद्रे सुहृद्भिः संगमोऽस्तु ते
'You have obtained a hero, the great chariot-warrior of all the worlds; go, O blessed one, may you have union with friends in your home.'
एवमुक्ता प्रहृष्टाभिः सखीभिः प्रतिनन्दिता। भद्रा भद्रजवोपेतानश्वान्पुनरचोदयत्
Thus addressed and congratulated by her delighted companions, Bhadrā, endowed with auspicious speed, urged the horses again.
पार्श्वे चामरहस्ता सा सखी तस्याङ्गनाऽभवत्। ततः कन्यापुरद्वारात्सघोषादभिनिःसृतम्
At her side, a companion stood, holding a fan; then, with a resounding noise, they departed from the gate of the maiden's city.
ददृशुस्तं रथश्रेष्ठं जना जीमूतनिस्वनम्। सुभद्रासङ्गृहीतस्य रथस्य महतः स्वनम्
People saw that excellent chariot, with a sound like thunderclouds, the great chariot of Subhadra being carried away.
मेघस्वनमिवाकाशे शुश्रुवुः पुरवासिनः। सुभद्रया तु संपन्ने तिष्ठन्रथवरेऽर्जुनः
The city-dwellers heard the great sound of the chariot, like the roar of clouds in the sky; and Arjuna stood on the best of chariots with Subhadra accomplished.
प्रबभौ च तयोपेतः कैलास इव गङ्गया। पार्थः सुभद्रासहितो विरराज महारथः
He shone together with her like Kailasa with the Ganga; Partha, the great chariot-warrior, shone with Subhadra.
विराजते यथा शक्रो राजञ्शच्या समन्वितः। सुभद्रां प्रेक्ष्य पार्थेन ह्रियमाणां यशस्विनीम्
Just as Shakra shines with Shachi, O King, so did Partha; seeing Subhadra, famed, being carried away by Arjuna.
चक्रुः किलकिलाशब्दानासाद्य बहवो जनाः। दाशार्हाणां कुलस्य श्रीः सुभद्रा मद्रभाषिणी
Many people, having gathered, made clamorous sounds; for Subhadra, the glory of the Daśārha clan, spoke in the tongue of the Madras.
अभिकामा सकामेन पार्थेन सह गच्छति। अथापरे तु संक्रुद्धा गृह्णीत घ्नत माचिरम्
Desiring her, and with her own desire, she goes together with Pārtha; but others, enraged, said, 'Seize! Strike! Do not delay!'
इति संवार्य शस्त्राणि ववर्षुरभितो दिशम्। इति संभाषमाणानां स नादः सुमहानभूत्
Thus, after arming themselves, they showered weapons in every direction; and as they spoke thus, a great tumult arose.
स तेन जनघोषेण वीरो गज इवार्दितः। ववर्ष शरवर्षाणि न तु कंचन रोषयत्
That hero, like an elephant tormented by the noise of the crowd, rained showers of arrows, yet did not anger anyone.
मुमोच निशितान्बाणान्दीप्यमानान्स्वतेजसा। प्रासादवरसङ्घेषु हर्म्येषु भवनेषु च
He released sharp arrows, blazing with his own brilliance, upon the groups of towers, mansions, and palaces.
क्षोभयित्वा पुरश्रेष्ठं गरुत्मानिव सागरम्। प्रेक्षन्रैवकतद्वारं निर्ययौ भरतर्षभः
Having shaken the foremost city, like Garuḍa the ocean, he looked toward the Raivata gate and departed, bull among the Bharatas.
शासनात्पुरुषेन्द्रस्य बलेन महता बली। गिरौ रैवतके नित्यं बभूव विपृथुश्रवाः
By the command of the best of men, and with great force, Vipṛthuśravā always remained on Mount Raivata.
प्रवासे वासुदेवस्य तस्मिन्हलधरोपमः। संबभूव तदा गोप्ता पुरस्य पुरवर्धनः
During Vāsudeva's absence, he, like the wielder of the plough, became the protector and enhancer of the city.
प्राप्य पाण्डवनिर्याणं निर्ययौ विपृथुश्रवाः। निशम्य पुरनिर्घोषं स्वमनीकमचोदयत्
Having learned of the departure of the Pāṇḍava, Vipṛthuśravā set out; hearing the city's tumult, he urged on his own troops.
सोऽभिपत्य तदाध्वानं ददर्श पुरुषर्षभम्। निःसृतं द्वारकाद्वारादंशुमन्तमिवाम्बिरात्
Advancing on that path, he saw the best of men, emerging from Dvārakā's gate, like the sun from the ocean.
सविद्युतमिवाम्भोदं प्रेक्षतां तं धनुर्धरम्। पार्थमानर्तयोधानां विस्मयः समपद्यत
Beholding that archer, like a rain-cloud with lightning, wonder arose among the warriors of the Anarta army.
उदीर्णरथनागाश्वमनीकमभिवीक्ष्य तत्। उवाच परमप्रीता सुभद्रा भद्रभाषिणी
Seeing that army with chariots, elephants, and horses in full array, Subhadrā, of auspicious speech, spoke with great delight.
संग्रहीतुमभिप्रायो दीर्घकालकृतो मम। युध्यमानस्य सङ्ग्रामे रथं तव नरर्षभ
My long-held desire is to gather the reins for you, O best of men, as you fight in battle, driving your chariot.
ओजस्तेजोद्युतिबलैरन्वितस्य महात्मनः। पार्थ ते सारथित्वेन भविता शिक्षितास्म्यहम्
Endowed with strength, energy, radiance, and might, O Pārtha, I have been trained to be your charioteer.
एवमुक्तः प्रियां प्रीतः प्रत्युवाच नरर्षभः। चोदयाश्वानसंसक्तान्विश्तु विपृथोर्बलम्
Thus addressed by his beloved, the best of men, pleased, replied: 'Urge on the untiring horses, let us enter Vipṛthu's forces.'
बहुभिर्युध्यमानस्य तावकान्विजिघांसतः। पश्य बाहुबलं भद्रे शरान्विक्षिपतो मम
See, O blessed one, as I fight many who seek to defeat your kin, the power of my arms as I release my arrows.
