स प्रकृत्या श्रिया दीप्त्या संदिदीपे तयाऽधिकम्। उद्यत्सहस्रदीप्तांशुः शरदीव दिवाकरः
By her very nature, brilliance, and radiance, he shone even more, like the autumn sun with a thousand blazing rays.
सा तु तं मनुजव्याघ्रमनुरक्ता यशस्विनी। कन्यापुरगता भूत्वा तत्परा समपद्यत
That illustrious maiden, devoted to him, became absorbed in him, entering the city of maidens.
वृष्म्यन्धकपुरात्तस्मादपयातुं धनञ्जयः। विनिश्चित्य तया सार्धं सुभद्रामिदमब्रवीत्
Then Dhananjaya resolved to depart from Andhaka's city, and said this to Subhadra.
द्विजानां गुणमुख्यानां यथार्हं प्रतिपादय। भोज्यैर्भक्ष्यैश्च कामैश्च स्वपुरीं प्रतियास्यताम्
Give to the foremost virtuous Brahmins what is due, with food, delicacies, and gifts, as you return to your own city.
आत्मनश्च समुद्दिश्य महाव्रतसमापनम्। गच्छ भद्रे स्वयं तूर्णं महाराजनिवेशनम्
For the completion of your great vow, and on your own behalf, go swiftly, O blessed one, to the palace of the great king.
तेजोबलजवोपेतैः शुक्लैर्हयवरोत्तमैः। वाजिभिः शैव्यसुग्रीवमेघपुष्पबलाहकैः
With white, excellent horses endowed with energy, strength, and speed—Shaivya, Sugriva, Meghapushpa, and Balahaka.
युक्तं रथवरं तूर्णमिहानय सुसत्कृतम्। व्रतार्थमिति भाषित्वा सखीभिः सुभगे सह
Bring here quickly the splendidly adorned best chariot, yoked for the purpose of the vow, as spoken, together with your companions, O fortunate one.
क्षिप्रमादाय पर्येहि सह सर्वायुधेन च। अनुकर्षान्तपताकाश्च तूणीरांश्च धनूंषि च
Take up swiftly and come, together with all weapons; also bring the banners, quivers, and bows.
सर्वान्रथवरे स्थाप्य सोत्सेधाश्च महागदाः
Place all the best chariots, along with the mighty clubs, on the vehicles.
अर्जुनेनैवमुक्ता सा सुभद्रा भद्रभाषिणी। जगाम नृपतेर्वेश्म सखीभिः सहिता तदा
Thus addressed by Arjuna, Subhadra, who spoke auspiciously, went at that time to the king's residence, accompanied by her companions.
व्रतार्थमिति तत्रस्थान्रक्षिणो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। रथेनानेन यास्यामि महाव्रतसमापनम्
For the purpose of the vow, she spoke to the guards present there: 'I will go to complete the great vow with this chariot.'
शैब्यसुग्रीवयुक्तेन सायुधेनैव शार्ङ्गिणः। रथेन रमणीयेन प्रयास्यामि व्रतार्थिनी
With the chariot yoked by Shaivya and Sugriva, and equipped with weapons of the wielder of Sharnga, I will proceed, seeking the completion of the vow.
सुभध्रयैवमुक्ते तु जनाः प्राञ्जलयोऽभवन्। योजयित्वा रथवरं कल्याणैरभिभाष्य ताम्
When Subhadra spoke thus, the people stood with joined palms, and after preparing the splendid chariot, addressed her with blessings.
यथोक्तं सर्वमारोप्य आयुधानि च भामिनी। क्षिप्रमादाय कल्याणी सुभद्राऽर्जुनमब्रवीत्
Having placed everything as instructed, including the weapons, the radiant Subhadra swiftly took them and spoke to Arjuna.
रथोऽयं रथिनां श्रेष्ठ आनीतस्तव शासनात्। स त्वं याहि यथाकामं कुरून्कौरवनन्दन
This chariot, best among charioteers, has been brought at your command; so go as you wish, O joy of the Kurus.
निवेद्य तु रथं भर्तुः सुभद्रा भद्रसंमता। ब्राह्मणानां तदा हृष्टा ददौ सा विविधं वसु
Having presented the chariot to her husband, Subhadra, esteemed by the auspicious, joyfully gave various riches to the Brahmins.
स्नेहवन्ति च भोज्यानि प्रददावीप्सितानि च। यथाकामं यथाश्रद्धं वस्त्राणि विविधानि च
She gave food filled with affection and whatever was desired, as well as various kinds of garments, according to wish and faith.
तर्पिता विविधैर्भोज्यैस्तान्यवाप्य वसूनि च। ब्राह्मणाः स्वगृहं जग्मुः प्रयुज्य परमाशिषः
Satisfied with various foods and having received those riches, the Brahmanas returned to their homes, bestowing supreme blessings.
सुभद्रया तु विज्ञप्तः पूर्वमेव धनञ्जयः। अभीशुग्रहणे पार्थ न मेऽस्ति सदृशो भुवि
But Subhadra had already been informed by Dhananjaya: 'On earth, there is none equal to me in holding the reins.'
तस्मात्सा पूर्वमारुह्य रश्मीञ्जग्राह माधवी। सोदरा वासुदेवस्य कृतस्वस्त्ययना हयान्
Therefore, she first ascended and took the reins, the sister of Vasudeva, having performed auspicious rites for the horses.
व्यत्ययित्वा तु तल्लिङ्गं यतिवेषं धनञ्जयः। आमुच्य कवचं वीरः समुच्छ्रितमहद्धनुः
Then Dhananjaya, changing his appearance and ascetic attire, the heroic one donned his armor and raised his great bow.
आरुरोह रथश्रेष्ठं शुक्लवासा धनञ्जयः। महेन्द्रदत्तं मुकुटं तथैवाभरणानि च
Dhananjaya, clad in white garments, mounted the excellent chariot, wearing the crown given by Mahendra and also the ornaments.
अलङ्कृत्य तु कौन्तेयः प्रयातुमुपचक्रमे। ततः कन्यापुरे घोषस्तुमुलः समपद्यत
Having adorned himself, the son of Kunti set out; then, in the city of maidens, a tumultuous sound arose.
दृष्ट्वा नववरं पार्थं बाणखड्गधनुर्धरम्। अभीशुहस्तां सुश्रोणीमर्जुनेन रथे स्थिताम्
Seeing Partha, the new bridegroom, armed with arrows, sword, and bow, and the beautiful-hipped one holding the reins, standing on the chariot with Arjuna,
ऊचुः कन्यास्तदा यान्तीं वासुदेवसहोदराम्। सर्वकामसमृद्धा त्वं सुभद्रे भद्रभाषिणि
The maidens then spoke to Subhadra, the sister of Vasudeva, as she departed: 'You are endowed with every desire, O Subhadra, speaker of auspicious words.'
वासुदेवप्रियं लब्ध्वा भर्तारं वीरमर्जुनम्। सर्वसीमन्तिनीनां त्वां श्रेष्ठां कृष्णसहोदरीम्
'Having obtained Arjuna, the heroic beloved of Vasudeva, as your husband, among all noble women you are the best, O sister of Krishna.'
मन्यामहे महाभागे सुभद्रे भद्रभाषिणि। यस्मात्सर्वमनुष्याणां श्रेष्ठो भर्ता तवार्जुनः
'We consider you most fortunate, O Subhadra, speaker of auspicious words, because Arjuna, the best of all men, is your husband.'
उपपन्नस्त्वया वीरः सर्वलोकमहारथः। हे प्रयाहि गृहान्भद्रे सुहृद्भिः संगमोऽस्तु ते
'You have obtained a hero, the great chariot-warrior of all the worlds; go, O blessed one, may you have union with friends in your home.'
एवमुक्ता प्रहृष्टाभिः सखीभिः प्रतिनन्दिता। भद्रा भद्रजवोपेतानश्वान्पुनरचोदयत्
Thus addressed and congratulated by her delighted companions, Bhadrā, endowed with auspicious speed, urged the horses again.
पार्श्वे चामरहस्ता सा सखी तस्याङ्गनाऽभवत्। ततः कन्यापुरद्वारात्सघोषादभिनिःसृतम्
At her side, a companion stood, holding a fan; then, with a resounding noise, they departed from the gate of the maiden's city.
