समुद्रे पश्चिमे यानि तीर्थान्यायतनानि च। तानि सर्वाणि गत्वा स प्रभासमुपजग्मिवान्
He went to all the holy places and sacred sites by the western ocean, and after visiting them all, he arrived at Prabhasa.
चिन्तयामास रात्रौ तु गदेन कथितं पुरा। सुभद्रायाश्च माधुर्यरूपसंपद्गुणानि च
At night, he pondered what Gada had once told him, and the sweetness, beauty, and virtues of Subhadra.
प्राप्तुमं तां चिन्तयामास कोऽत्रोपायो भवेदिति। वेषवैकृत्यमापन्नः परिव्राजकरूपधृत्
He thought about how he might obtain her, considering what means could be found; adopting a disguise, he took on the form of a wandering ascetic.
कुकुरान्धकवृष्णीनामज्ञातो वेषधारणात्। भ्रममाणश्चरन्भैक्षं परिव्राजकवेषवान्
Unknown to the Kukuras, Andhakas, and Vrishnis due to his disguise, he wandered, begging alms, clad as a wandering ascetic.
येनकेनाप्युपायेन प्रविश्य च गृहं महत्। दृष्ट्वा सुभद्रां कृष्णस्य भगिनीमेकसुन्दरीम्
By some means or another, having entered the great house and having seen Subhadra, the uniquely beautiful sister of Krishna—
वासुदेवमतं ज्ञात्वा करिष्यामि हितं शुभम्। एवं विनिश्चयं कृत्वा दीक्षितो वै तदाऽभवत्
Knowing the intention of Vasudeva, I will act for her good and welfare; having made this resolve, he then undertook his vow.
त्रिदण्डी मुण्डितः कुण्डी अक्षमालाङ्गुलीयकः। योगभारं वहन्पार्थो वटवृक्षस्य कोटरम्
Carrying a triple staff, with shaven head, water-pot, rosary, and ring, bearing the marks of a mendicant, Partha entered the hollow of a banyan tree.
प्रविशंश्चैव बीभत्सुर्वृष्टिं वर्षति वासवे। चिन्तयामास देवेशं केशवं क्लेशनाशनम्
As Vibhatsu entered, Indra poured down rain; he contemplated the Lord of the gods, Kesava, the remover of distress.
केशवश्चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा दिव्यज्ञानेन दृष्टवान्। शयानः शयने दिव्ये सत्यभामासहायवान्
Kesava, knowing his thought through divine knowledge, saw him while reclining on a celestial bed, accompanied by Satyabhama.
केशवः सहसा राजञ्जहाय च ननन्द च। पुनः पुनः सत्यभामा चाब्रवीत्पुरुषोत्तमम्
O King, Kesava suddenly rose and rejoiced; again and again Satyabhama spoke to the Supreme Person.
भगवंश्चिन्तयाविष्टः शयने शयितः सुखम्। भवान्बहुप्रकारेण जहास च पुनः पुनः
O Lord, absorbed in thought, you lay happily on the bed, and in many ways you laughed again and again.
श्रोतव्यं यदि वा कृष्ण प्रसादो यदि ते मयि। वक्तुमर्हसि देवेश तच्छ्रोतुं कामयाम्यहम्
If there is anything to be heard, Krishna, if you have grace toward me, you should tell me, O Lord of the gods; I desire to hear it.
पितृष्वसुर्यः पुत्रो मे भीमसेनानुजोऽर्जुनः। तीर्थयात्रां गतः पार्थः कारणात्समयात्तदा
My cousin, Arjuna, the son of my father's sister and younger brother of Bhimasena, has gone on a pilgrimage, O Partha, for a certain reason at that time.
तीर्थयात्रासमाप्तौ तु निवृत्तो निशि भारतः। सुभध्रां चिन्तयामास रूपेणाप्रतिमां भुवि
When his pilgrimage was completed, Bharata's descendant returned at night and began to think of Subhadra, who is unmatched in beauty on earth.
चिन्तयेन्नेव तां भद्रां यतिरूपधरोऽर्जुनः। यतिरूपप्रतिच्छन्नो द्वारकां प्राप्य माधवीम्
While thinking of that blessed one, Arjuna, disguised as an ascetic, concealed in the guise of a mendicant, reached Dvaraka, the city of Madhava.
येनकेनाप्युपायेन दृष्ट्वा तु वरवर्णिनीम्। वासुदेवमतं ज्ञात्वा प्रयतिष्ये मनोरथम्
By some means or another, having seen the best-complexioned maiden, and knowing Vasudeva's intention, I will strive to fulfill my desire.
एवं व्यवसितः पार्थो यतिलिङ्गेन पाण्डवः। छायायां वटवृक्षस्य वृष्टिं वर्षति वासवे
Thus resolved, Partha, the Pandava, in the guise of an ascetic, sat in the shade of a banyan tree as Indra poured down rain.
योगभारं वहन्नेव मानसं दुःखमाप्तवान्। एतदर्थं विजानीहि हसन्तं मां मुदा प्रिये
While bearing the marks of a mendicant, he experienced mental distress; know this, dear one, as the reason for my joyful laughter.
भ्रातरं तव पश्येति सत्यभामां व्यसर्जयत्। तत उत्थाय शयनात्प्रस्थितो मधुसूदनः
He sent Satyabhama, saying, 'See your brother'; then Madhusudana rose from his bed and set out.
प्रभासदेशं संप्राप्तं बीभत्सुमपराजितम्। तीर्थान्यनुचरन्तं तं शुश्राव मधुसूदनः
Madhusudana heard that Vibhatsu, undefeated, had reached the region of Prabhasa and was visiting the holy places.
चाराणां चैव वचनादेकाकी स जनार्दनः। तत्राभ्यगच्छत्कौन्तेयं महात्मातं स माधवः
From the words of the spies, Janardana, alone, went there and approached the great-souled son of Kunti, O Madhava.
ददृशाते तदान्योन्यं प्रभासे कृष्णपाण्डवौ
Then, in Prabhasa, Krishna and the son of Pandu saw each other.
तावन्योन्यं समाश्लिष्य पृष्ट्वा च कुशलं वने। आस्तां प्रियसखायौ तौ नरनारायणावृषी
The two, embracing each other and inquiring about their well-being in the forest, remained together as dear friends, Nara and Narayana, the sages.
ततोऽर्जुनं वासुदेवस्तां चर्यां पर्यपृच्छत। किमर्थं पाण्डवैतानि तीर्थान्यनुचरस्युत
Then Vasudeva questioned Arjuna about his journey, saying: 'For what purpose, O Pandava, are you visiting these holy places?'
ततोऽर्जनो यथावृत्तं सर्वमाख्यातवांस्तदा। श्रुत्वोवाच च वार्ष्णेय एवमेतदिति प्रभुः
Thereupon Arjuna narrated everything as it had occurred; hearing this, the descendant of Vrishni replied, 'So it is,' thus affirming.
तौ विहृत्य यथाकामं प्रभासे कृष्णपाण्डवौ। महीधरं रैवतकं वासायैवाभिजग्मतुः
After enjoying themselves as they wished in Prabhasa, Krishna and the Pandava went to the mountain Raivataka to reside.
पूर्वमेव तु कृष्णस्य वचनात्तं महीधरम्। पुरुषा मण्डयाञ्चक्रुरुपजह्रश्च भोजनम्
By Krishna's instruction, men had already adorned that mountain and prepared food offerings.
प्रतिगृह्यार्जुनः सर्वमुपभुज्य च पाण्डवः। सहैव वासुदेवेन दृष्टवान्नटनर्तकान्
Arjuna accepted everything and, having eaten, together with Vasudeva, watched the dancers and performers.
अभ्यनुज्ञाय तान्सर्वानर्चयित्वा च पाण्डवः। सत्कृतं शनं दिव्यमभ्यगच्छन्महामतिः
Having taken leave of all and honored them, the wise Pandava, duly respected, gradually attained the divine.
ततस्तत्र महाबाहुः शयानः शयने शुभे। तीर्थानां पल्वलानां च पर्वतानां च दर्शनम्। आपगानां वनानां च कथयामास सात्वते
Then, the mighty-armed one, lying on a splendid bed, began to recount to the Sātvata the sights of holy places, lakes, mountains, rivers, and forests.
